This is quite untrue. I am happy in life and am at the same time proud of what I have achieved at the workplace. BUT toxic colleagues and lack of communication with the higher ups are making my daily job very difficult. I feel dread turning up to work every day.
Yes...both can be true. I know co-workers who are miserable at work and complain about EVERYTHING and do NOTHING to make things better at work (because they don't work at all). Then, when they share what's going on in their home life, then you see why they are the way they are at work. And yes...know all about the toxic work environment too. So both scenarios can be true...unfortunately, even at the same time. Be well and be at peace.
Literally just went through this had to walk out today after a conflict with a colleague who lied to my manager as well right in front of my face now I'm not sure what to do I've been working factory gigs for 10 years and just feel like I've had enough and don't know where to turn to not that I expected to be you know completely happy with working that's unrealistic I'd like to do something with my life.
Intention aside, this could be better interpreted as “happiness can be found in life and be supported by working a job where you find meaning, personal development, recognition, and the ability to help people your way”. Definitely difficult to find since most companies focus on maximizing profit. PTO? Insurance? Lunch breaks? No child labor? These “good” things, amongst many others, only exist bc it is less profitable to not have them. If it increases profit for them, they do it. If it doesn’t increase profit for them, they don’t do it, unless it is legally mandated.
It takes willpower to show up and choose to see the bright side when working w/ poor managers in a disorganized environment. It’s possible but willpower runs out. Willpower is limited, I don’t want to waste it at my job when I have more important things to do like cook healthy meals for my family even when I’m mentally tired, exercise for my health when I’m physically exhausted. These are more important than my job, yet some days I just flop onto the couch after work from pure frustration that I must return to the same unproductive and ineffective work environment tomorrow. I have good days at work, and bad days that make me want to quit. I would say, if you have more bad than good and you haven’t been able to be happy in your life outside of work, it’s probably time to find a new job. No place is perfect but many sacrifice decades just to realize they could have gotten a different job. A job you enjoy won’t make you completely happy on its own, but it should help you design a life that WILL. Or at the very least, not interfere with your ability to live better.
He thinks he knows what's going on, but he completely turned me off. It's easy for him to talk about this, but it's quite difficult for those people to take action. If he was in the same shoes as those people, then he will come to a complete understandable, therefore to complete understand what's going on.
Completely wrong. The amount of horrible jobs there are out there are bewildering. To say that people are just unhappy at life shows how oht of touch this person is. Needs to work in an Amazon "fulfillment centre" on a nightshift and then see if he is just unhappy in life.
I think he meant it the other way around - unhappiness in work creates unhappiness in life. And that unhappiness stems from not feeling like your output is meaningful or rewarded. Afterall we spend most of our time awake at work, it's nice to feel like it serves a purpose.
My job keeps cutting hours and piling more work on the remaining employees. Twice the workload, half the workers. Meanwhile, the ceos are making bank, and new stores are opening everywhere. I feel graped.
I agree many high ups who are out of touch with the working class. There are so many BAD jobs that get away with criminal labor laws. I work in human service the people I work with are more dysfunctional than the people who are our clients.
Working at Amazon is the most soul crushing job anyone can ever do they fired me and it was like a release from that hellish place I walked out a new man A FREE MAN DAMNIT
I work in the woodworking industry. Totally toxic management. Owner. Manager. Total chaos. Nothing I've done ever mattered. Showing up early. Cleaning, organizing, doing maintenance on machines. Drawback to showing up early is that I'm the first to get my ass chewed. Lots of screaming a few fist fights. Manager throwing things. Calling people stupid or incompetent. Boss always losing money. Yep. This is because I'm an unhappy person. I graciously invite you to work here. Please.
I’m curious if he’s speaking about specific types of work? This is such a sweeping generalization. I need more context because the holes in this argument are almost too obvious.
I worked in a factory that was managed by a vengeful bean counter. It was hilarious how many ways the people in that place found to get even with him. In the end new management above his level busted him down to graveyard shift floor foreman. All the people he f’d over got to see him humiliated. He finally accepted a payout and left. But by that time all the good people had moved on. Met some good men in that shop. Still hunt and fish with some of them years later.
Nope. I love myself, my life, my relationships and my talents. I hate my job because it doesn’t allow me the freedom to be true to myself. Because it limits my creativity and earning potential. We have been groomed that the only way to earn a decent living is go to college, get a degree or two (I got an undergrad and a grad degree) and work at a company and give 80 hours of your life to a company helping someone else get rich while your lucky if they give you a 3% raise every year which is peanuts while trying to pay off the student loans you had to take to pay for those degrees and take YEARS to pay off.We aren’t taught how to create a business, how to invest our money, how to become rich because we are taught to be workers, not thinkers! The new generation have the advantage, they have social media, IG, Tiktok, etc and were able to become multimillionaires under the age of 30.
Dude, I need to get paid. Fuck that whole earning my success bullshit. After what I had to put up with over these 4 years, I just need one thing. Pay. That’s it. Shut up. “Worker”. Shut up. I’m an intelligent person that doesn’t want to end up with student loan debt.
Actual #1: Happy workers get paid what they are worth. With all time high CEO payments and all time low worker payments, this is really a no-brainer. HBR, be honest with yourselves, this is not the take.
Yeah exactly my point I know my value i know my worth too for the first time I actually feel like I am needed and I am valuable special and important I hope one of coworkers stays because I have tried to keep her around time and time again
I'm unhappy at work because my coworkers are upset with me. Has anyone ever been to a hypnotist show before? I was in an honest trance and now my coworkers don't like me.
Im actually happy outside of work altho we all have life challenges. Your JOB can be something that you are unhappy doing , you spend 8+ doing this work and these tasks that make you wonder why you do it. Money? Yeah sure. But money isnt worth questioning your own worth or meaning in life. People tell me to think about the benefits and the salary. I say fuck a salary i rather have nothing and go day to day helping people than to have all the money in the world and be too tired to live my life.
That's the craziest thing I have ever heard ...happy before and and after work... crazy corporate rules and crazy managers that have there in set of rules they like to follow and your just a number and the company really doesn't care about you or qhat happens to you .. Alit to be haply about when your at work ... not...stupid crazy
WTF? Which F500 company paid you? No man...companies pretend that their service/product output is something that is going to make you happy, being part of that. Well...no, it doesn't. What really makes you happy is: Decent and reliable pay >=40h workweek Meritocracy Decent human beings Improving your surroundings That's all...if you are unhappy with your professor's job, you probably are unhappy with your life man, not us.
I don't even feel like it doing it anymore or being there anymore but I do it like I love it yeah exactly right I sure do feel that way well that's means my coworkers do actually need me and so does my bosses the higher ups are watching me I know it
I literally work the most useless job in the world lol. Even if I loved my job and was super passionate about it, I couldn't possibly feel like I was accomplishing anything. I'm actually surprised I get paid to be there lol (I don't hate it by the way. I would actually be extremely sad to lose it. I'm just saying I have no value)
I 100% agree about this, being recognized, and serving people. My problem with this is the often the corporate environment means handing over control of our future, and to stay in our lanes, in exchange for "safe money"? But people definitely have the ability to change their lives easily, be more, do better, and enjoy life more.
Yeah that's not true. I work 3 days at a job I don't like, but it's easy as heck and pays well. 36 hours a week and four days off is worth it. I enjoy life. Now pick up my extra hours and get to work.
Yes. Lack of communication ability and self compassion makes it almost impossible to solve simple problems.most people don't think they deserve it after a bad review, so they end up being harsh on themselves instead of asking how to make it better.
this doesn't work like this. this guy is a boss so he's trying to trick you. don't listen to this guy. if you are unhappy with the work apply for other jobs and come back to your current job and let them know how unhappy you are with toxic boss. then use the leverage. make sure you are still preforming at the current job so they can't lose you. after that ask for raise or tell them you found another job that pays more.
People who live comfortably on top are completely out of touch as to what the real world is like for most people. Believe me I would live extremely happy if I didn’t need to show up at my job. Im always happy when I’m on vacation,I have my hobbies and personal interests other than slaving away for poorly managed and unfair work life
This is quite untrue. I am happy in life and am at the same time proud of what I have achieved at the workplace. BUT toxic colleagues and lack of communication with the higher ups are making my daily job very difficult. I feel dread turning up to work every day.
I know exactly what what you mean unfortunately.
I was happy until 5 weeks ago when I got a new boss. I thought everything was great until recently. I agree with you.
Its always two sided
Yes...both can be true. I know co-workers who are miserable at work and complain about EVERYTHING and do NOTHING to make things better at work (because they don't work at all). Then, when they share what's going on in their home life, then you see why they are the way they are at work.

" if you hate your job it's your fault, now be happy and get back to work"
Intention aside, this could be better interpreted as “happiness can be found in life and be supported by working a job where you find meaning, personal development, recognition, and the ability to help people your way”.

( "If. )
Reminds me of the Dan & Shay song. Happiness isn't found in bigger houses or more money or greener grass next door.
That’s exactly what he said 😂

This is absolutely every single thing that I feel! Oh, my gosh! I thought I was the only one. THANK YOU!!!!

If one is privileged and Harvard educated, my assumption is his mindset is privileged

Did you even watch the video?

Harvard University. Totally clueless regarding our everyday struggles. Period.
This 👍

It comes down to feeling like I can make a living. if the job pays well enough and I'm not stressed at work on top of making ends meet
Say this to people that live in countries that are really hard to find another job and have to handle toxic workplaces to pay the bills.
Yeah. Especially in overpopulated countries like Brazil, Indonesia, Pakistan, China, and ultimately India.

Also, woodworking can be a great joy and therapy as a hobby, but rarely has that happened while working.
Happiest before and after work 🎉😢🎉

This is on point!!!!
I agree.
How it is in our hands ?
Very true. Thank you Arthur 🎉😊

What if the idea that I have to work my entire life (which is a waste of my only life I get) is the problem.
As long as you have enough money to buy what you need to live and make some kind of contribution to your own community, great.
Actual #1: Happy workers get paid what they are worth. With all time high CEO payments and all time low worker payments, this is really a no-brainer. HBR, be honest with yourselves, this is not the take.
What about terrible job companies who are paying below minimum to survive and want from employers to work on 300%
Yeah exactly my point I know my value i know my worth too for the first time I actually feel like I am needed and I am valuable special and important I hope one of coworkers stays because I have tried to keep her around time and time again
Very true
I'm unhappy at work because my coworkers are upset with me. Has anyone ever been to a hypnotist show before? I was in an honest trance and now my coworkers don't like me.
He's full of sh!t, employers hold all the cards. Indentured servitude is forced to entrap people with crappy pay , wage stagnation and more work.

These comments are golden... 😄

More happy at work keeps me away from toxic fam members
He’s “trying to get people to understand”. We understand you loud and clear. You are out of touch
I don't even feel like it doing it anymore or being there anymore but I do it like I love it yeah exactly right I sure do feel that way well that's means my coworkers do actually need me and so does my bosses the higher ups are watching me I know it
this guy worked at Goldman Sachs making $700,000 per year at 22 and ehhh didnt like it so he switched to Merrill Lynch making $900,000.
Much happier!
I’m unhappy because I have a bunch of Karen’s at work and micro manager
Thats ones of the most stupid ist statement ever. Its not at all a coincidence thats is coming from harvard.

Full of crap. A happy worker is one who feels valued and doesn't have to make excuses for bosses who should not hold leadership positions.
Bullshit. I just put my notice in. Making me work for free again and again and again.
Did you get a job?
Yes. Lack of communication ability and self compassion makes it almost impossible to solve simple problems.most people don't think they deserve it after a bad review, so they end up being harsh on themselves instead of asking how to make it better.
This guy must be getting paid to spread this bs
Bullshit!
Absolutely rubbish.
This dude doesn’t know what his talking about
Rubbish in my experience 😂
Yikes
Bs statement. I like my life and myself but find my job and work environment very toxic.
Bullshit.....i love my life but hate my work.

I love my job it's full of purpose meaning and fulfillment exactly I am serving people giving back one of those are my purpose I will figure it out
Until you find what it is God wants you to do. You'll never be happy...
Please pray for me. What do i do to get peace in my heart. Have not yet seemed to get it.
