He said that during a pre-preduction meeting and the director said he should say it in the movie. Snipes said it would sound stupid because it was indeed a dumb thing to say.
The matrix used so much of the film techniques from Blade. This movie was literally the first of its kind. Snipes ad libbed a lot of blades mannerisms, made the character his own. One of my favorite movies of all time!!!
Exactly! Every once in a while a cutting edge movie comes out that sets the trends for others.. The Matrix, Underworld and many others. I have to remember, some people were just born or were young and didn't see this Artistic phenomenon.
Marvel Comics were hurting so bad that they had to sell their own office furniture on the sidewalk in front of their building to barely stay operational until this movie brought new lifeblood.
Wesley Snipes is an extremely accomplished martial artist, so all those moves were really him. He even had to slow down because the camera couldn't keep up with his speed. Also, Blade II is inexplicably directed by Guillermo del Toro. It's one of the most insane sequels in the history of cinema and I can't wait for you two to react to it.
I dislike the mouths in blade 2, but like the enemy and comedy guy in 3rd.....also blade and deadpool have fought in the comics and they "meet" in third :P
Unfortunately, in the early 90s he overhyped his own skills. On Demolition Man Dennis Leary talks about how the movie basically went into overtime and over budget because Snipes INSISTED on doing the fights himself, only for him to massive mess up repeatedly, and they had to reshoot several of the scenes with a stunt double.
This is the movie that brought Marvel out of bankruptcy in the 90s, saved the company, and made it possible for all the comic book movies and shows that are made and being made today. Also, it came a year before the Matrix and did the black leather, sunglasses and slow motion bullets.
Respectfully it did not. Marvel only made 25k off the movie. The sold the rights while they were in dire straight. What turned them around was one the merger with Toy Biz..and their leadership and secondly film producer David Maisel who convinced them to create their own studio and finance their own films. That leadership was able to get them the Merrell Lynch loan. Who really made $$$ of this film was New Line Cinema/Time Warner who made the movie and ironically TW also owned DC comics.
no it didn't, xmen which came out the year after is what made them movie and of course spawned future xmen movies. Blade didn't do anything for Marvel.
Technically if there was no blade, there would be no X men, since it was x men that was the movie that made superhero movies blow up, blade was a test to see if superhero movies could draw money so they opted for a lower tier superhero in case it was a bust
@@syn420951 Indeed. Blade started it all, it's shameful that Snipes isn't recognized by Marvel these days. He's too old now to do action films (61 years old).
@@PenTheMighty He's most definitely not too old to do action movies. Just look at Liam Neeson and actors like him, hell Harrison Ford did Indiana Jones until his mid 70s right? Sean Connery did The Rock in his mid 60s or late 60s. And Wesley Snipes, for all intents and purposes because of his martial arts background, is probably in pretty good shape still. Maybe.
When you grew up watching Wesley Snipes as "Blade" and twenty years later they are telling everyone that "Black Panther" is the first black superhero. Excuse me, are you completely mental?
For Black Panther they had to add 'to have his own movie in the MCU'. This generation desperately wants to be special for doing what as already done before.
Technically, Blade is an Anti-Hero like The Punisher Deadpool and Ghost Rider. They kill bad guys. T'Challa didn't kill Zemo. All the Anti-Heros would've killed him. That's all sumed up in Dare Devil Season 2. We get a contrast between Frank and Matt.
The little bit of world building right at Blade's intro is perfect. "Is that him?" "It's Blade. It's the Daywalker." Five little words, and you instantly want to know more. Doesn't hurt that he's absolutely the coolest guy in the room by miles.
One of the greatest movies of the 90s. Pure badassery from Wesley Snipes! The club scene is Iconic, Blade's introduction is iconic... just everything about this film feels iconic at this point.
It's a Marvel superhero movie, starring Blade and Whistler, with Ip Man, Hellboy, Daryl Dixon and Cat from Red Dwarf, directed by Guillermo Del Toro. It's like an ultimate gift to fan geeks.
Everyone's talking about Marvel, but this movie also made vampires cool. Most movies before this (including Interview), still cast vampires as poofy-collar, lace-wearing, pompous metrosexuals. And the story was always about drama and romance. Blade made an action shooter where the vampires used guns and samurai swords.
First, yes, Wesley Snipes is a trained martial artist. Second the girl vampire in the first scene in the movie is one of the few 1980s porn stars, Traci Lords…. who successfully made the transition to legitimate television and movies. She is famous because they pulled all of her videos when it was revealed that she was under age when she made some of the most famous porn movies of that decade.
@@vtetrooo1312 Not if you know she was the one who wanted to do Porn badly and forged her official Documents. Then when she wanted to get mainstram after a view years she forced the companies to take ALL her movies down, cause she was a minor during SOME of her movies.
This is why I effin love their reactions! It's not just about how they react to the movie, but also to each other. Had me rollin' in tears during the Blade theme song. Top shelf!
One of my favorite superhero movies of all time. Some people prefer Blade 2, but for me the first is the best and it’s not close. A nearly perfect film!
True the only bum note In the whole film was the CGI even at the time it was a bit iffy now it makes the whole film look dated and goofy so people watching for the first time will never get what a great experience the film was unless they do a good digital remastered version some day.
@@ryanmcgrath4979the second is great. Guillermo del Toro brings a bit of his unique creativity as the director. The third isn't terrible but it isn't great either. Snipes was in a bad place in life and it shows in this performance.
I agree. This film keeps the CGI mostly to a minimum which has allowed it to age the most gracefully. Only using it for the ashing and the weird vampire skeletons at the end. In Blade 2 they start using fully CGI characters for stunt shots and it really looks ropey and like a video game. Plus I think the script here is much tighter. All the pieces tie together and do a great job of telling a cohesive story. You can end with the first one and honestly not miss anything. It's also a much harder edged movie. The violence feels palpable and real.
Going in to Blade (rated R 18+ introduction to Marvel's dark, stylish vampire hunter) with absolutely no knowledge was brave. And spectacular - best review ever. So good! Thanks for sharing guys! This was awesome.
actually true Wesley Snipes (Blade) began training in martial arts when he was 12 years old. He has a 5th degree black belt in Shotokan karate and a 2nd degree black belt in Hapkido. He has also trained in Capoeira in a number of other disciplines including Kung Fu, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and Kickboxing
Some Trivia. The director of the film, Stephen Norrington stated the cause of Pearl's obese size was the creature gaining a cannibalistic lust for infants and children as he loves to eat their hearts. The scene was supposed to have infant bodies around her. Which was too much to put in the movie.
You two may be interested in knowing, Wesley Snipes-the actor who portrayed Blade- is an actual black belt martial artist. He is his mother's only child, so she was concerned about him being hurt, when he asked for permission to play football. She wouldn't allow him to, but as an alternative, enrolled him in a martial arts program. You guys seem a little odd separately, but seem to be perfection as a couple...love you guys!
It's not just your opinion. This movie was HUGE when it came out. Opening weekend, I thought to myself, "Okay, I guess I'll just go see it," and I took ONE LOOK at that line and said, "...but not tonight, that's for damn sure."
Wesley Snipes was definitely in his best shape in this movie, he was badass as the half vampire/warrior Blade (1998)!! Truly a great actor, his performances like New Jack City, Jungle Fever, Sugar Hill, and Brooklyn's Finest were outstanding, but Blade is one of his best roles in his career🔥🔥🔥awesome reaction you two❤
The first Non-Porn role for Tracy Lords that I know of. She was well known back in the day. Wesley Snipes was fantastic as Blade. I can't picture anyone else as Blade.
Fun Fact: The little girl with the braids who was playing video games at Frost's place and fought Blade was trained by Snipes. There was this martial arts demo that was on TV back then where Snipes, that girl, and other martial artists who were stunt performers in the film showing out on that special.
Deacon Frost is the best villain here (worse than Dracula) and he makes Blade suffer, turned his mother, tortured Whistler, even left her colleague alive for Karen
In Deacon Frost we have one of the best villains, not simply in this film, not simply in vampire or Marvel films, but in all cinema. He's a self-assured sociopath with a Satanic sense of humor and a vile charm that you just can't look away from. He's a wiry cat who, if you're supremely unlucky enough to be his quarry, will taunt, torment and tantalize you and he'll know full well that _you'll_ know there's not thing-one you can do about it...and he positively, literally _thrives_ on it. The kind of villain, in other words, that *we* thrive on hating (and ache to see get what's coming). He is, in other words, a perfect vampire for the 21st century, a smirking Yankee Dracula who revels in the application of power without a single iota of taste. 😎 Did I say all cinema? Well... perhaps not your higher-browed varieties of cinema. 🧐
This is the movie that saved comic book movies. Comic book movies were failing and being seen as a losing investment. Then Blade came along. Most would say that the MCU wouldn’t exist without this movie
comic movies pretty much didnt exist yet back then but the only thing i can think of is batman and robin and as much as i loved it and as well as i thought it did it didnt do well enough wish we got superman lives with nic cage so bad tho
@@rhatikeo many comic movies came out before blade. Superman movies, Batman, Howard the duck, punisher, the phantom, the shadow, judge dredd, spawn, and many others. Comic movies were failing left and right and getting horrible reviews. Blade saved the genre.
This is the first comic book movie after the abomination that was Batman and Robin. After Batman and Robin people thought the genre was dead and had run its course. Then Blade came along and was a cultural phenomenon and instant cult classic. A couple of years later we got Spider-Man and X-Men and Hulk. But they don't happen without Blade. Though maybe a little too influential, Blade is also the reason the X-Men were in Black Leather.

Thank you, ash and Hannah! This is one of my favorite movies of all time, so I’m glad that you both liked it. I’m on my 15th watching of this reaction video. And it really does get better every time. She’s just said “a boomerang frisbee” and I have a huge smile on my face. Thank you, Hannah and Ash.
In 1998 this hit even harder than now in 2024. yes the intro is one of the best intros ever. the film was also notorious at the time for being 'ultra-violent' because all this amount of action was not usual for movies at the time. This is before the Bourne trilogy. Before of course most of Marvel.
Well I can't wait to see Ash lose his shit during Blade 2. So glad he's finally watching this. This movie walked so many others could run, keep in mind this is pre Matrix.
It's one of the best 5 to 10 minute opening scenes in a movie ever. I saw this in the theater, really had no idea what it was about, and I was immediately hooked. What a banger.
Blade is one of my favorite movies of all time. Wesley Snipes being a real martial artist makes the film. His movement is so natural. Can't wait for the Blade 2 and I hope you guys react to more martial arts movies. I would definitely recommend, Ong Bak starring Tony Jaa. Dude is a beast! Thank you for your reactions! Never a dull moment!
Great reaction - I think this movie was MADE for your channel - delirious to watch you realizing in that early club scene what kind of movie this was going to be - Christmas came early lol - what I liked about the villain is that they cast an actor who looks like he could be the hero, so it's like they're both competing to OWN this movie - Blade was a turning point in superhero movies - they took the 90s HK wire fu, plus the new CGI tech, plus this new serious tone, and created a new formula - X-Men would build on this, then Raimi's Spider-Man would cement this new template, and that's when the superhero movies really exploded - but IMO it started w Blade
I'm really glad you two enjoyed Blade. These movies have been mine & my parent's bonding films for years. We all LOVE Blade and regularly listen to the soundtracks from all 3. PLEASE watch the other 2, Blade 2 is by far my favourite of the trilogy & Ash will absolutely love it.

Snipes is one of the few actors that have actual black belts, he studied Taekwondo, aikido, jujutsu, a couple of styles of karate I don't remember... the guy is the real thing
black belts in any of those arts doesn’t necessarily mean you are a badass that can really fight. All of those arts have a issue with a lack of real pressure and resistance testing. Traditional jujitsu can be great but overall a black belt doesn’t mean as much as it does in Brazilian jiu jitsu because in BJJ it’s constant pressure testing and sparing. The only arts where a black belt is going to 100% translate to badassery is judo and Brazilian Jiu jitsu. For self defense Aikido is pretty much garbage, Karate and TKD can be good if it’s a good dojo that strongly prioritizes sparring and real pressure testing over striking the the air, kata and the theoretical but When it comes to striking people are better off going to a boxing, kickboxing or muay Thai gym.
@@6kembe4orba kyokushin is one of the better karate styles because it prioritizes sparring, it’s very tough and it has the best conditioning but the lack of head punches is a weakness. I understand why they don’t punch to the head so that they can train and spar hard barefisted but it’s a weakness of the style nonetheless. Nothing I said on that comment indicates a lack of knowledge when it comes to Martial arts. I stand by saying that outside of judo and BJJ a black belt doesn’t mean someone is necessarily a badass that can fight and when it comes to striking people are better off going to a boxing, kickboxing and mauy Thai gym rather than going to a karate, TKD, Kung fu school. I don’t see how anyone could argue with that. Again I’m not saying karate is bad, there’s a lot of badass karate guys out there but but people who train boxing, kickboxing and mauy Thai are typically going to be better in a real self defense situation for obvious reasons.
@@Jackholiday1025 headpunches are not allowed only in competition cause of number of near death cases in the past. Why do you insist that this is a "weakness of the style" when such strikes (to the head) are one of the basic strikes in kyokushin? The fact that is forbidden is exactly cause of the insane strength of the fighters that can cause death to the oppponent with 1 strike. You implying otherwise shows (again) your lack of knowledge. Any good kyokushin fighter will mop the floor with BJJ/judo. only mauy Thai can square up somewhat. MMA proved this numerous times. Cancel Reply

31:03 Yes this ,,Bullet-Time effect“ was in Blade(1998) one year before The Matrix(1999). Also the Big-jump in Hospital is like Trinity's jump in The Matrix.
In the comics Blade goes after Deadpool wife because she used to be with Dracula(or she was promised for Dracula and Deadpool sniped her), but she was a demon something, not a vampire, so Deadpool got Blade to back off, but yea Blade is a cool marvel character
Glad that you guys liked "Blade", it was a heck of an experience, back in 1998. In response to Nukey's question about which Wesley Snipes film should Ash see next.... For action: Blade 2, Demolition Man (maybe Blade Trinity, though many including me reckon it's not as good as the first two) For comedy: White Men Can't Jump, To Wong Fu (completely against type) For drama: New Jack City, Jungle Fever, Liberty Stands Still
I'm not going to lie. I couldn't stand Ash before Hannah haha. He was just on 11 all the time. She is a great balance for the channel in multiple ways.
1998. When the obsession with franchises, sequels, prequels and spin-offs didn't existed: nor Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter, Fast & Furious, Matrix, MCU-DCEU or anything else. Only a time when we thought that good movies were given for granted. 21st century sadly proven how wrong we were. Ashkan, Hannah, your reaction is priceless. It remembers me when we were on cinema discovering a truly wonderful movie. Fun fact: "Blade's Theme" turned into an instant classic and it ruled the dancefloors for years. Deservely.
A few things to note. Blade came out one year beforeThe Matric and almost certainly influenced some of its style. Deacon wasn't turning the cop vampire wannabe. Thar bite was pure murder. He was cutting him loose. This movie kept Marvel Studios in business.
Donal Logue, the actor who plays the vampire who got set on fire in the opening, has this issue with his jaw becoming easily dislocated. It's because of a motorcycle accident he'd had years earlier. Anyways, while they were shooting that scene where he' comes back to life his jaw went out again. He was in a great deal of pain and they called an ambulance for him and when the EMTs saw him they freaked out -- he was in his horrible burns makeup so they thought they had a soon-to-be-DOA on their hands.
Blade is half human half vampire . His mom was bitten by a vampire while she still pregnant with his . So he has all their strength and none of their weaknesses.
Wesley Snipes is low-key one of the best American martial artists that Hollywood has to offer. Check out Demolition Man, The Art of War OR , my personal favorite, Undisputed, if you want to see some of his finest work.
It’s a shame how relatively unknown ‘Blade’ is considering there are many people who incorrectly think ‘Black Panther’ is “the first black superhero movie.”
Love the line from Frost: "you spent your whole life looking for that vampire that bit youre mom... well here I am" 🤣so cold 🤣 And Frost has full control over Blades is mom because he was the one who turned her. That's vampire lore 101. And one more thing... Blade was released in August 1998, just eight months before The Matrix was set to hit theaters.

@@Belnick6666can you say it was great for the movie though? Cause I was scared asf as a kid, seeing that in the theater.

That wasn't Blade. That was all Wesley. 😂
This is the movie that brought Marvel out of bankruptcy in the 90s, saved the company, and made it possible for all the comic book movies and shows that are made and being made today. Also, it came a year before the Matrix and did the black leather, sunglasses and slow motion bullets.
I think Chris Reeve's Superman Movie made it possible for all the Comic Book Movies and Shows
Respectfully it did not.

One of THE best openings of a film ever and the best club scene in any film ever. The story behind the song choice is unreal too.
What's the story behind the song choice? I'm intrigued
The movie that rescued the Marvel franchise. No Iron Man without Blade. When movies were still bangers.
Technically if there was no blade, there would be no X men, since it was x men that was the movie that made superhero movies blow up, blade was a test to see if superhero movies could draw money so they opted for a lower tier superhero in case it was a bust
@@syn420951 but it was successful when it came out in 1998?
@@syn420951 Indeed. Blade started it all, it's shameful that Snipes isn't recognized by Marvel these days. He's too old now to do action films (61 years old).
@@PenTheMighty He's most definitely not too old to do action movies. Just look at Liam Neeson and actors like him, hell Harrison Ford did Indiana Jones until his mid 70s right? That is my favoritest line from this whole movie
"Is that him?"
"It's Blade. It's the Daywalker."
Five little words, and you instantly want to know more. Doesn't hurt that he's absolutely the coolest guy in the room by miles.
One of the greatest movies of the 90s. Pure badassery from Wesley Snipes! The club scene is Iconic, Blade's introduction is iconic... just everything about this film feels iconic at this point.
Ash is going to love Blade 2.
I was just saying that but he's going to be mad about what happened to Donnie yen.
Blade 2 is goated
It's a Marvel superhero movie, starring Blade and Whistler, with Ip Man, Hellboy, Daryl Dixon and Cat from Red Dwarf, directed by Guillermo Del Toro. It's like an ultimate gift to fan geeks.
Ash is going to love "The Raid: Redemption."
Hannah going to love Blade 3 ;)
Everyone's talking about Marvel, but this movie also made vampires cool. Most movies before this (including Interview), still cast vampires as poofy-collar, lace-wearing, pompous metrosexuals. And the story was always about drama and romance. Blade made an action shooter where the vampires used guns and samurai swords.
The chaotic energy between you two is always top tier.
Are they ALWAYS like this? consider myself subbed LMAO
@@OnceWasSomething Yes! This isn't even the most intense. 🤣❤
Hannah's expressions staring at Ash are 10/10 in this. 😂
First, yes, Wesley Snipes is a trained martial artist. Second the girl vampire in the first scene in the movie is one of the few 1980s porn stars, Traci Lords…. who successfully made the transition to legitimate television and movies. One of my favorite superhero movies of all time. Some people prefer Blade 2, but for me the first is the best and it’s not close. A nearly perfect film!
I’ve only seen the first Blade. The sequels, no.
It's definitely close, Blade 2 is fucking awesome.

Without this movie there wouldn't be no Marvel films today in my opinion 👊
It's not just your opinion. This movie was HUGE when it came out. Opening weekend, I thought to myself, "Okay, I guess I'll just go see it," and I took ONE LOOK at that line and said, "...but not tonight, that's for damn sure."
Wesley Snipes was definitely in his best shape in this movie, he was badass as the half vampire/warrior Blade (1998)!!

In 1998 this hit even harder than now in 2024. yes the intro is one of the best intros ever. the film was also notorious at the time for being 'ultra-violent' because all this amount of action was not usual for movies at the time. This is before the Bourne trilogy. Before of course most of Marvel.

Its hapkido.
@@Jackholiday1025 making such wild claims and ignoring kyokushin shows your lack of knowledge on the subject.

Ash thinking that blood kiss was sexy tells me he earned his wings already.
Donal Logue, the actor who plays the vampire who got set on fire in the opening, has this issue with his jaw becoming easily dislocated. It's because of a motorcycle accident he'd had years earlier.
