There's a verbal typo in this video where Misha says Iran instead of Iraq. Our notes even said Iraq, so just a slip of the tongue. Thanks to the many people who pointed this out. Also, please keep the comments polite and civil.
My understanding from research I have done on my K98 was that the Haganah was obtaining stuff pre WWII to use in defence of various communities. My one appears to be a Polish made one which was part of a secret shipment to the Haganah at the same time they were providing arms secretly in the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939)
Thank you for watching, and yes there were definitely a good number of all kinds of firearms in the region before the nation of Israel came to be. Its all an interesting (and at times very tradgic) story.
Many thanks for your informative video. I have a beech stocked Czech K98 in 7.62 that must be a late model version, without the enlarged trigger guard. So many different variations!
Love your work on this and other rifles. Question. Is the "finger grooves" on the K98 an Israeli thing? I have a Czech K98 dot 1945 in 8mm with the grooves so am wondering if I have a Israeli 8mm? Any poster feel free to reply.
Excellent content. Any issues with me taking your research and video as a jumping-off point for doing something similar in German? Because I recently bought an IDF-Converted 1940 Sauer & Sohn, and it really irks me that nothing on this topic is available in German (of all languages!).
Interesting, I don't know why, but I always thought that Israel adopted an autoloader for their first rifle, probably the FAL. It makes complete sense though with the Jewish State being formed right after World War II that there would be a bunch of 98s Edit: Fun fact. the original Israeli Air Force fighters planes were AV 199s, a copy of German Luftwaffes BF 109, made in Czechoslovakia.
Yep, they used pretty much anything and everything they could get their hands on during the first decade or so. The Uzi came out in 1953 and the IDF adopted the FAL around 1955.
G'day, Were the Gew98's modified by Israel to K98k specs during the conversion process to 7.62 NATO or would these likely to have been sent as long rifles or German conversions as surplus from the Czechs in the first shipments? I have seen a few with 1916-1917 marked Gewehr 98 receivers and bolts. Love your videos, Mitch.
The vast majority were original Kar.98k length. That said, anything is possible and receivers were recycled and 1946-1949, the Israelis took any guns they could get their hands on, period. They used a bit from sweden too.
Yeah! Very good question! I actually own such a rifle whose receiver, bolt and magazine-box is from a 1917 original Mauser/Oberndorf produced Gewehr 98 (of course now converted to the new specs and in .308 cal.) and all the time I wondered about the history of this special example. I asked myself if the Gewehr 98 was converted into some kind of K98k by the Germans between the wars or if it went through WWII in its original configuration (and length) in some depot, was captured by the Czechs and than later exported to Israel. Would be intersting to learn more about this special rifle as it seem to be some kind of "rarity within the rarities"... :-) Anyway, after watching this informative and interesting video of Misha, at least I can assume that my rifle came to Israel with the first small batch from Czechoslovakia. Thank you for this video!
Is the magazine capacity 4 or 5 rounds? I just pick one of the rifles up, and I can only load (4) 7.62x51 rounds into the magazine. Am I missing something, or is it 4 not 5 for capacity?
I believe you meant to say Iraq rather than Iran since Iran is not an arab nation and they were close allies of Israel until the Islamic Revolution in 1979.
You going to cover Yugo K98 rifles? Also German captured M24 Yugo guns that were re-captured. Do you know the details on how the Yugoslavs got their hands on GEW 98 long guns? Yugo variants in general are a pretty in depth discussion.
Yep. FYI, there actually is a Japanese cartoon about guns having personalities based on their traits. The L85, for example, is super shy and has crippling anxiety and various health problems that hinder her performance, while the M16 is basically a raging caricature of American stereotypes from the east. The show is called "Upotte!" It is weird, but then again, most anime is. The show takes place at the "western" school of arms development, while the rival school is the "eastern" one. Basically, NATO versus Combloc, but the schools are literally high schools, where rifles study and practice, hoping that they will be adopted by different countries. The M1 Garand is their drill instructor, and he is like an animated version of R.Lee Ermy.
Have one on its way made in 1943 I really cant wait! Thanks for the history you really know your stuff, Take care. Edit would my rifle have the original wood if its 43? If not were would the stock be from and is it good wood? Thanks again!
My first deer rifle was a brno vz24. 1937 all numbers matching. I got it in 1989 for my 14th birthday. It was immediately tore apart and sported for hunting. If I knew then.... But anyway That rifle is my go to rifle for deer season. Check it out on my channel, you wont believe how it looks now. love your videos keep them coming.
His cats are the best. In one of the Springfield 03A3 videos they are in another room moaning. Then you hear a loud scream from one of them and you see it run across the hall 😂 Classic ‼️
Hey mishaco I personally own a single very rare 30-06 Israeli mauser. Not sure why Israel never rechambered the fn Mauser to 30-06 like they did with their other Mausers. Also the receiver can't even fit 30-06 rounds other than a single round. My rifle is way up in 1958 so I guess they must have forgotten this one. The receiver is large enough to take 8mm but not 30-06. Yet the chamber is 30-06 and is marked so
Time and money would be my guess... Already had to buy new and used rifles in the late 40s / early 50s to add to ones they already had and then NATO adopted 7.62 in the mid 50s so they did the same. I don't remember seeing anything about Israeli Mauser in 30-06 (that was usually the Browning MGs)
They made both. Originally when they were occupied, it was the VZ-24 but then around 1942, the Germans forced them to switch all production over to the Kar.98k. So by the later half of WWII, they were making a German spec. K98k.
That storage story sounds like something a bunch of USMC grunts would do in ears past, no offense intended. I suspect the Marines treat their weapons better now.
It is it truly parkerized then some bubba did that. Are you aure ita parkerized though? Could just be that it looks similiar to parkerization, which the rearsenal finish does look like
Yes, i misspoke, intending to say "iraq'. Another commenter politely pointed out my slip soon after this video went up. Hey, you try speaking for 20+ minutes and not slip up once or twice lol. Unfortunately unlike with print articles, with videos you really don't get to have a first and second draft to correct mistakes.
Ozark Bear Arms Thanks for the answer.. I did not want to be impolite and I am not, just this subject is so sensitive and I personally think that people who does not have any idea about Iran ,and also have been brain washed by media ,can misjudge and talk about Iran in a wrong way...and this is frustrating..more and more becomes like an obsession...I apologize if my previous comment made you feel that i am insulting... thanks for all your videos and i am big fan of your chanel...best
Nope, not insulting at all. When i go back and listen to the recordings after we make them, i often hear little slips and mistakes and stumbles. I wish there was a good way to easily and neatly clean them up like there is with a typed article, but really there is not short of dubbing over and re-recording. In short, it is just going to happen. It annoys me too when i realise I said something wrong *shrug*.

I appreciate your handling of keeping the video non political
Thank you. I did not know this story’s details. Very interesting

how do you know all this? O.o (thats almost unbelievable...Oo)
A lot of digging in k98 forum and other web sites.
That was very interesting, thank you. Incredible pace you're making videos lately.
Thanks much for watching.
Gun porn along with a history lesson - youtube videos don't get any better...thanks Misha!
Thanks much for watching, cheers.
Guess im late for the party D: my grandfather acually fought with an MG42 and a Kar98k in israel, 1967 and 1973
Very interesting history, thanks mate
Many thanks for your informative video. I have a beech stocked Czech K98 in 7.62 that must be a late model version, without the enlarged trigger guard. So many different variations!
This was a very informative presentation Good job.
Great review! Thanks! Haganah=meaning "Defense", the pre-state of Israel main (para)military organization, which then became the IDF in 1948.
Love your work on this and other rifles. Question. Is the "finger grooves" on the K98 an Israeli thing? I have a Czech K98 dot 1945 in 8mm with the grooves so am wondering if I have a Israeli 8mm? Any poster feel free to reply.

Great video and lost of historical info, thank you. Do you ever sell items out of your collection?

You're more than welcome & thanks for watching.
Very interesting look into the post WWII history of the German Mauser design.

If I could find one of the rifles ruffley what would the price be about?
I believe you meant to say Iraq rather than Iran since Iran is not an arab nation and they were close allies of Israel until the Islamic Revolution in 1979.
You are correct, this was a verbal typo - happens sometimes on these long videos.
Where can I get one?
Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge. came across one, wondering whether to take the plunge....

Sure, we'll get into some of the Yugo Mausers eventually.
If guns had personalities instead of being inanimate objects, this gun would have to be the most schizophrenic one.
lol exactly

If no takedown lug then not from 43
I heard the 7.62 Mauser has barrels made by colt.
My first deer rifle was a brno vz24. 1937 all numbers matching. I got it in 1989 for my 14th birthday. It was immediately tore apart and sported for hunting. If I knew then.... I have an FN made Israeli Mauser chambered in 7.62. Has IDF crest.
your cats are brilliant photobombers :-)

Nice video
Hey Misiak, are YOU Polish back home ???anything to do with that ???
another great vid
thank you,
Trigger guard enlarged?
Nice video!
Joseph Stalin sent USSR-captured mausers to Israel, also ordered Czechoslovakia to send their small arms and licensed Messerschmitts to

Paul f-ing Mauser
Why illegally? Israel had no rights to defend itself?
Again, not arguing morality or 'right'. Just stating the historical fact that international law and the U.N. at the time viewed it as illegal.
At the time it was still under control of the British a d refused to let jews arm or defend themselves
Just like the Socialist People's Republic states treat their Citizens.
Mine is parkarized, is that something someone likely did in there garage or is it something isreal did?
It is it truly parkerized then some bubba did that. Are you aure ita parkerized though? Could just be that it looks similiar to parkerization, which the rearsenal finish does look like
Brno not Bruno...lol
PRONOUNCED HA- GAH-NAH
hey mishaco.
Iran NEVER EVER attacked israel, indeed Iran was helping Israel by sending oil during the war (yom Kippur)
