That gathering technique is awesome! The skirt is beautiful too. And this video was posted on my birthday. So all signs are pointing me to make this skirt. It's just meant to be!
I rarely use these terms because they are annoying but they are much needed for this tutorial... O M G!! That gather method with the twine is "everything" "Yassssssss Hunty" I'm an intermediate "sewist" and cannot understand why it is that I have not seen this method until now. That made my life so much easier thank you, thank you. You are also a great teacher everyone that does a tutorial is not a great teacher and so they're methods and lessons get lost or jumbled. Great job.
I love your method to gather fabric! And I completely agree with ironing, especially seams - it certainly makes for a far more professional look. I'm loving your videos. Subscribed!
Wanted to get into sewing. Went online to find something I liked the idea of buying and wanted to make it myself. Saw this tutorial and it's exactly what I wanted.
Hi, I just stumbled across your channel a few days ago and noticed that in the video's I've watched, you are eyeballing all of your tutorials. I love it. I have a hard time following patterns and have yet to make a piece of clothing that fits. I get frustrated and push it aside- so thank you for this.!!! will try asap, so excited
Great video. Still watching after 4 years. My question is if my waist size is 33*3/4 should be giving me 25. Would it not be too small? What was your front panel measurements
Just came across your channel! You're amazing and giving me so much inspiration! I subscribed after your first video. Thank you for going into so much detail!
**RE: FINAL PICS** In the video, it's mentioned several times that the link to the pictures is in the info box. It's the first link in the info box. It's always been there. At the time I made the video, I did not know how to add pics to the videos, I simply wanted to share. CHECK THE INFO BOX, YO! lol
Good afternoon I am lost , when you say your waist multiply by 3 and divide by four , did you fold the material into two because I know it is for just one side of the skirt either front or back, so when cutting out the material do i fold into two
Yes, I folded the fabric. When I say "cut on the fold", I'm saying my fabric is folded in half. So when you do your measurement and cut on the fold, you will cut a very wide panel. Hope that helps!
I love this video, thank you ma'am for sharing your knowledge But I got lost somehow during the waist measurement (waist *3/4)...if I were to measure mine because my waist is 28, I'd get 21"(inches) after dividing... and that measurement won't be as wide as the one you showed; meaning the gathers won't be full how do I measure to get a fuller gather thanks once again as I await your reply
Trust your math. I made the skirt in my measurements which is larger than yours, so don't compare your size to mine. It will be a full gather. If you prefer, make a practice skirt first.
Hi! love your channel. on this particular video i'm confused by th front panel needing to be the waist in inches X 3 divided by 4 . Or is this for the entire thing? I'm trying to decide how much fabric I need.
How do I calculate the waist without gathering it? I just want a straight a line with the split. Do I just not multiply by 3 to eliminate the gathering?
I have a question; i saw you gather the front piece only and then you jumped to attaching the back piece on one side to the front. Is the back piece not gathered as well or did you manually gather it when you were attaching the waistband?
Hi! I love this video, but I’m a touch confused. My waist is 48 inches, so I end up with 36 after doing the math. So does that mean a) from seam to seam it should be 36 when I unfold it? Or b) is that 36 in from fold to seam (72 inches when unfolded)? Sorry I went through all of the comments, but I’m still confused on that part. Thanks in advance for your help!
Love the skirt! I have a similar skirt like this, except it's a little shorter to about the knees, that's beside the point however. It kinda has those pleats yours has too. I want it to have a split like yours. Can I just cut a split in it and then hem it and have it look good or is that not possible?
Hi! I love this tutorial. I went to joann fabric store and got 3 yards and if I cut on the fold on the fabric I do not have enough for two panels. Is this because their yard measurements are not accurate or am I doing something wrong?
Hello Erin! I really like your tutorial and I have a question: I prefer the drape of the half-circle skirt. What would be your advice to add a split on such a skirt?
Thanks for this great tutorial! I gather exactly the same way, I can't stand those delicate basting double lines... the only difference: I use elastic thread instead of your wire and stretch it evenly with my right hand while sewing. That way, the gathers are evenly distributed from the start. I do that because I can never gather evenly when I have to distribute, I just don't have a good eye for that. Thankfully, the elastic saves me that step. Also, I don't need to secure it with a straight stitch since I just pin it to the waistband and I can stretch the elastic to match.
does the width of the fabric matter for this project? Also I know you addressed the folded fabric countless times...thank you! But is the fabric folded in half lengthwise or width? thank you again for your time.
The fabric is folded selvedge to selvedge, lengthwise. The width depends on your measurements, but it's best to go with a 50-60inch wide fabric to be safe.
That gathering technique is awesome. Do I do zigzag stitch’s on the wire? Also, can I still follow the method if I don’t want to do the split? Thank you. This is great!
Hi! It's called interfacing. It's a stabilizer for your fabric if the fabric you're using is too flowy for (in this case) a waistband. There are different types for different reasons.
I watch your video often for reference...I love it. I want to ask to a question. I, again, want to use your video for reference in making a gown, but I want the skirt to flair at the sides like an A-line skirt. Do you think it would be feasible to angle the yard stick from the waist to the bottom when connecting so the skirt can flair?
Hey! No, actually changing at the side seam will give you this weird angular situation that's not going to give you the look you want. What you can do it cut and spread from the hem to the point where you want it to flair. Spread the pattern open at that point (or points depending on how flared you want it), then redrawn the hem at the new width/sweep.
Hey, quick question. for the first and second panels, is the fabric folded prior to cutting? Did you use 2 separate 1 yard panels? I guess im trying to figure out if when you say lay the 1st panel on the fold of the 2nd panel, is the second panel folded in half? I hope that makes sense lol. thank you :)
got it, you mentioned you used 2.5 yards, so is each piece 2.5 yards? or did you cut that in half then fold for the 2 panels? I'm sorry, I'm a semi-beginner, and I think this is where I go wrong with either not having enough fabric or cutting something wrong. Thank you for your reply.
+Ahlon Black 2.5 yards is for the entire skirt. I think when you work through it, it will make more sense to you. Do the skirt on practice fabric that you won't mind messing up. Don't be afraid to try!
+Style Sew Me I tried :( maybe in doing something wrong lol. I have my 2.5 yrds. folded in half and I cut what I needed for the first panel, However, there is nothing left to cut the 2nd panel out of (in which you laid another piece of fabric and laid your 1st panel on top of to trace). Am I not supposed to have the 2.5 yards in half when I cut my first panel? My First Panel was def. not as along as yours when you cut the split piece lol. I'll keep trying. Thanks again.
that's exactly what I'm trying to figure out, I want to assume she used a very very very long piece of fabric to cut the 2 panels out. I'm not sure how else you can cut two long panels that are both on fold on one piece of fabric
Hi, I am new to sewing and your tutorials helped me make my first pleated skirt. A question is there a way to make a tutorial for a midi pencil skirt that is non stretch fabric? I have an idea for a two piece out fit but can't find anyone who has a tutorial for it. If not is there somewhere you can point me to? Thank you!!!!
hi hi, I'm charity from south Africa and I love ur work and I've tried make few of ur skirt. can u also help me on same few dress that I love learn sewing them

Oh my! The gathering tip alone was worth the entire video.... Thank you for sharing
I rarely use these terms because they are annoying but they are much needed for this tutorial... O M G!! Finally a great tutorial without the fanfare!!! It was clear and precise. New subscriber 😃👍🏽
I had the hardest time finding that butcher's twine. So guess what I tried? YARN! And it works!!!
Great switch!
You make great tutorials. I made the pleated skirt and now making this one... I am not really a sewer but following the steps are easy
Yay! I love to hear that! Keep sticking with me and I'll make you into a sewer! :)
That's it, I'm calling it chicken wire from here on out. I could not stop laughing. Thanks for posting, easy to follow and understand!
Hahahahhahaha! Thanks for watching!
Chicken wire refers to wire mesh that is used for chicken pens.
Great tutorial. You made it look sew easy. Keep them coming.
New Sub here. Your vids are easy to listen to. No unnecessary music or props. Hope to get a channel going soon. Thanks for the inspiration.

Love this tutorial! You are so detailed, thank you so much!
Great video. Still watching after 4 years. My question is if my waist size is 33*3/4 should be giving me 25. Would it not be too small? What was your front panel measurements
I thought it was just called string, coming from a common Londoner lol ....., I'm in love- I really have to try this out
I FOUND THIS VIDEO TO BE THE BEST DETAILED ONE BY FAR ... THANK ...

Did you cut both pieces on fold?
Very Beautifully done. Thank you for sharing.
You're a good teacher
Thank you, Phoebe!
That looks so much easier. I love it. Oh and by the way I think the product you're using is called butcher's twine.
+Theressa Walden Girl, THANK YOU! I was like...what the crap is this called! LOL!
I love her skills. thankful
This is so lovely

Good afternoon I am lost , when you say your waist multiply by 3 and divide by four , did you fold the material into two because I know it is for just one side of the skirt either front or back, so when cutting out the material do i fold into two
Yes, I folded the fabric. When I say "cut on the fold", I'm saying my fabric is folded in half. So when you do your measurement and cut on the fold, you will cut a very wide panel. Hope that helps!
So....the back is fold?
Zyska Herbert yes, the part of the skirt closest to her body is where it's folded.
So if ur answer is 27 after dividing. it means when u fold u measure 13.5?
EXCELLENT! Thank you! You instruct VERY well!!
Thank you!
You're welcome 😊
I love this video, thank you ma'am for sharing your knowledge
But I got lost somehow during the waist measurement (waist *3/4)...if I were to measure mine because my waist is 28, I'd get 21"(inches) after dividing... and that measurement won't be as wide as the one you showed; meaning the gathers won't be full
how do I measure to get a fuller gather
thanks once again as I await your reply
Trust your math. I made the skirt in my measurements which is larger than yours, so don't compare your size to mine. It will be a full gather. If you prefer, make a practice skirt first.
Beautiful skirt, thanks for sharing
You are so welcome!
Hi! love your channel. on this particular video i'm confused by th front panel needing to be the waist in inches X 3 divided by 4 . Or is this for the entire thing? I'm trying to decide how much fabric I need.
This is for the front and back of the skirt. So you're cutting two of those. Give yourself a little extra for the waistband and pockets.
Thanks for this video. I'm gonna give it a try
The string is called "butcher's twine".
I need a split over the left leg, can I use this tutorial for that and just adjust what side I'm folding into thirds?
love this tutorial
How do I calculate the waist without gathering it? I just want a straight a line with the split. Do I just not multiply by 3 to eliminate the gathering?
great video I am Glad I Stumbled across it
I have a question; i saw you gather the front piece only and then you jumped to attaching the back piece on one side to the front. Is the back piece not gathered as well or did you manually gather it when you were attaching the waistband?
The front and back pieces were sewing together before I began gathering. So all pieces were gathered at the same time before attaching the waistband.
Hi! I love this video, but I’m a touch confused.
My waist is 48 inches, so I end up with 36 after doing the math. So does that mean
a) from seam to seam it should be 36 when I unfold it?
Or
b) is that 36 in from fold to seam (72 inches when unfolded)?
Sorry I went through all of the comments, but I’m still confused on that part. Thanks in advance for your help!
It will be 72 inches when unfolded since you cut 36 on the fold. Then you will gather that fabric to fit your waistband.
Style Sew Me thanks so much!! I really appreciate the help!
When you say to zigzag the edges, is to make sure the fabric don't unwind? Also are you doing that all around both of the rectangular? Thanks!😊
Yes to both of those question!
Love the skirt! I have a similar skirt like this, except it's a little shorter to about the knees, that's beside the point however. It kinda has those pleats yours has too. I want it to have a split like yours. Can I just cut a split in it and then hem it and have it look good or is that not possible?
Thanks....great tutorial
Hi! I love this tutorial. I went to joann fabric store and got 3 yards and if I cut on the fold on the fabric I do not have enough for two panels. Is this because their yard measurements are not accurate or am I doing something wrong?
Did you do the measurement calculations I explained in the video?
Is 3 yards enough based on the calculations?
Are you folding your fabric properly?
Style Sew Me thanks for such a quick response. I did not do my math correctly. I caught my mistake. Back to the fabric store i go lol.
Ah, been there done that! Glad you got it figured out!
That was great! thanks
Hello Erin! I really like your tutorial and I have a question: I prefer the drape of the half-circle skirt. What would be your advice to add a split on such a skirt?
Can you show what the inside of the waistband is supposed to look like when you're finished and how thick did you cut your waist band ?
Joti Hayre I'm wondering the same thing... how wide should the wasteband be when you cut it
Hi! Love the video -can you be more specific on the type of fabric you used... Is it like a quilting cotton?
I believe I mentioned it in the video. It was a polyester, not cotton. The fabric didn't have a name, all I know is what I shared.
Thank you for this!
Hi what type of wire do you use and where can get it please
love it! Great tutorial! ❤

+ColorBloX Great tip, thanks for sharing!
gret tip thanks
thanks for the tip!
Thanks so much!!

Very nice tutorial!!!
That gathering technique is awesome. Do I do zigzag stitch’s on the wire?
Also, can I still follow the method if I don’t want to do the split? Thank you. This is great!
You zig zag over the thread so you can pull it through. It the zig zag catches the thread, the pull won't work. Hope that helps!
If I were to put a long tie instead of a waist band, do you think this would work as a sarong, tying wrap skirt of sorts?
Sure! I'd do it in a knit so that it hugs the body securely and no boobage is showing!
Wow! So easy. You're a good teacher. Please what's the name of this rope for the gather again?
Thanks, it's called kitchen twine or cooking twine!
Can I used chiffon materials for this
What are you using to cut the fabric? What is it called
Rotary cutter
Thank you!
Thank you ma'am
Love it
That is smart 🤔about to do that 😁 thank for that technique.
Hi, question, what is the inner facing? Is I optional And what is it for? (Not sure if I’m saying that right) sorry I’m super new at sewing
Hi! It's called interfacing. It's a stabilizer for your fabric if the fabric you're using is too flowy for (in this case) a waistband. There are different types for different reasons.

Hi thank you for this tutorial it is amazing. What type of fabric did you use for this project?
+donna patterson It's 100% polyester. I'm glad you enjoyed. You can use any opaque, non stretch fabric you'd like.
Do you do custom orders? I love your work, but I can't sew lol
No, I don't. Thanks for thinking of me.
Can I accomplish the same type of gathering with a gathering foot?
Yes.
Its a fab tutorial! What fabric did you use? It looks to flow nicely. Thanks
Thanks! It's just a light/medium polyester fabric.
what kind of fabric did you use??
Hey, quick question. for the first and second panels, is the fabric folded prior to cutting? Did you use 2 separate 1 yard panels? I guess im trying to figure out if when you say lay the 1st panel on the fold of the 2nd panel, is the second panel folded in half? I hope that makes sense lol. thank you :)
+Ahlon Black Both panels are folded. You are copying the 1st panel to make the second one.
got it, you mentioned you used 2.5 yards, so is each piece 2.5 yards? or did you cut that in half then fold for the 2 panels? I'm sorry, I'm a semi-beginner, and I think this is where I go wrong with either not having enough fabric or cutting something wrong. Thank you for your reply.

+craziez2011 Yes, I am doing a pencil skirt tutorial this month for non-stretch fabric. I got you!
+Style Sew Me yeah 😩you replied!!!! I'm excited and can't wait!!!!!!😁😁
Do you mind if i ask for your measurements ?? you look around the same size/height as me!
What kind of fabric do you recommend for this project
A light to medium woven fabric.
hi hi, I'm charity from south Africa and I love ur work and I've tried make few of ur skirt. can u also help me on same few dress that I love learn sewing them
Hi, love your video. Question ... is it straight forward to add pockets to this skirt?
Thanks! Yes, it is! You can add them at the side seam. I'd place them about 6 inches down from the top of the skirt.
@@Stylesewme thanks.
Love it!!
