im also self-taught designer and got my first design job after 8 months. i didn't have a portfolio but what helped me landed the job and more projects was CONNECTIONS. even now i still dont have a portfolio lol. the lesson here is, put yourself out there and start networking.
Hello Aliena, I don’t know if you’ll even see this but in case you do, I want to say thank you very much. I have been feeling very scared and intimidated by creating a portfolio and you have just wiped all that worry away. Thank you for being a great teacher and for sharing your knowledge. Thank you, thank you.
This highly demanded video takes you through how to design your first UX design portfolio. This video focuses on how to design and build the portfolio home page.
I'm currently in the final stretch of finishing the Google UX Design course and am still finding things a bit nerve wracking. Thank you for making this video! I was incredibly nervous about making a portfolio.
Hi :) From my experience, creating a portfolio will never become 100% easy, maybe just easier. Even when I am building a portfolio, I am stressing, and sending that portfolio by clicking the 'send' button on the job application feels every time like the first time. So, that is definitely an experience that everyone has. One thing I can recommend (if you're interested in a recommendation) is to go through your portfolio with a mentor on ADPList. It's free and can help you prepare your portfolio and not be so nervous about 'Could I have made it better?' and all those thoughts that usually go through your head when a recruiter doesn't answer :) Hope that helps :)
I'm actually 1.5 years into learning how to be a full stack developer on my own. It feels like chasing my own tail when trying to learn on my own but even watching your videos regarding UX design helps me structure my project goals. Currently working on my second web portfolio from scratch ( for practice of course ) and I am currently struggling with designing it just as much as coding it. So thank you for this awesome content Aliena!
I am currently learning about UX Design and I must say you are truely a gem , you share things which other people dont even talk about. Thank you and please keep posting about UX stuff. :)
A millions THANKS for making me find building a Porfolio bit easy for me unlike before. I have spent day, week searching for how to build a porfolio for myself. You are a real Mentor!
Thank you so so much for letting me know that my content is valuable. I spent years struggling with portfolio building. Still need to improve myself. Will share my learning in this channel!
I love your videos because you share things that people don’t talk about. I’ve been struggling to present my portfolio well and these tutorials are really helpful.
This video was so good!! Thank you! I’m slowly pivoting into ux designing! I am currently a technical recruiter you definitely just eased my anxiety. I’m excited to get started and begin studying!
this is very helpful. I must say as a UX master student in my last semester I am disappointed they taught us NOTHING related to building a portfolio. I sent feedback to the school so they will hopefully incorporate this for future students.
I’m so glad that you find this helpful! I have a few more videos on portfolio too, don’t forget to go to my channel and check them out. And yes, most master programs can’t keep up with the speed of the industry. Glad you are searching for resource outside of school and investing in yourself.
Thank you so much for this video! very helpful and one of the best on here for a beginner who just learnt the basics of UXD. all others tell you the importance of portfolio, case studies, do's and don'ts but leave you blank on how to basically go about with the steps on how to get started on creating one.
Hey Aliena! Currently I teach Business English to mainly Russian IT guys, many of whom are pursuing UX/UI as a future career. Also, I'm planning to do the Google UX course myself next year! Like you, I plan to be totally self-taught. I love your approach and I'm looking forward to learning more from someone who has been through the journey! I'll definitely see you more next year! Thanks!
Hi, the Google course is a very good start and probably the best when it comes to the money/value ratio. I would 100% recommend it. The one small thing I would also recommend is not to stop at that course; find another course as well. The one problem with the Google course is that it teaches how to be a UX Designer at Google, focusing on their processes and approaches. That is not how 99% of companies work. So, definitely start with that course and then consider finding another course (many of them are free on UA-cam) or perhaps a course with a reputable certificate. Hope that help you :)
No worries at all! Next episode coming soon! (Soon in the sense of one to two weeks because it takes forever to make a video hahahah) hope everything is going well on your side 🥰🔥
I liked your way of keeping your personal identity and data away from the public, such as your LinkedIn account. I hope you will produce a video soon about what we should show and what not, from your point of view and experience. I will wait for this from you🚀❤
Glad it helped! I edited out 80% of the time where I clicked the wrong buttons, wait for the site to load, etc. Don't worry if it doesn't look easy for you. I still got lost all the time I just cut it out so that you guys don't need to see it 😂
Your videos are so helpful. Thank you so much for all the work you do. ♥️ Oh and I love your branding style of always rockin the red hoodie! You’re a genius.
This is quite helpful. Thank you. I'm building my portfolio from scratch using Webflow. It's such a pain. Hopefully I'm not wasting my time when I could be using a template. But I want to prove that I can design a website without a template
Glad it was helpful! It's a great skill to know Webflow as a designer. I've used it too and the learning curve was not easy at first. But the design of webflow resemble more of what front engineers actually need to work with. I think it's going to benefit you in the long run and keep it up!
Hi, Aliena. Just wanted to say thank you for your jokes and humor you bring into the videos every time (besides a very well prepared content you share with us here).!)
Thanks for the video, I would not have chosen to delete the templates already provided by squarespace, I find it easier and faster to put the front images, but why not.
Hi! Thank you for doing this video 😭 I was so lost about how to build my portfolio and the only platform I knew was Behance but I think Squarespace can fit better in me. Sorry if I made some mistakes writing this but English isn't my first language, hehe.
This was sooo helpful! Thank you for all the gems. I just have one feedback.. the background music is kind of distracting. Please reduce the volume in your future videos.
Thanks for the video 🙏🙏 Please can you do a practice UX project, from research to testing so that beginner UX designers can follow and have an idea of how to do their first project. Thanks 👍

I also worked as an analyst at a company and had to pause in ux, and now that i left the company, iwanted to continue my journey in UX, I love your content! I hope i can also finally break into design industry. Its been a long journey.
