I’ll never forget watching that CBJ-TBL series. I had a playoff bracket pool with a bunch of my friends, and because I love a good underdog story, I was the only one who picked the Jackets. I won that bracket on that series alone.
Now the 2022-23 Boston Bruins would be on here. They broke regular season records set by the 2018-19 Tampa Bay Lightning en route to a Presidents Trophy, had a 3-1 series lead over a Panthers team who took big steps back from the previous season (starting with the Huberdeau and Weegar for Tkachuk trade with Calgary during the 2022 off-season), and they choked. Starting a goalie that was in pain and dealing with an injury instead of a healthier goalie. Worst part was that it ended up being Bergeron and Krejci's final season before retirement.
Worst part of that own goal was that it was on Steve Smith's 23rd birthday. Talk about passing up a birthday present, or throwing it away in his case. I bet whenever he meets people who just turned 23 themselves they would ask him what he did on his 23rd birthday. "Well, I scored the eventual game and series winning goal in the Battle of Alberta back in 1986." (Except, it was the series winning goal that counted for our opponents, which prevented us from continuing our dynasty that year.) Cheer up, Smith. At least the Oilers weren't the last team to be denied from winning 3 straight cups after having it happen again in 1989. Happened to Pittsburgh twice in a 25 year span, and Tampa Bay just last post-season.
The 2005-2006 Red Wings lost in the first round (conference quarterfinals) to Edmonton, not the conference finals. Also, other posters are right, you should have picked the 95-96 Wings.
Oilers played the Mighty Ducks (their last season before the name was shortened to Ducks) in the Conference Finals, so I agree with you. First time since 1998 the Oil didn't have to play Dallas in the first round.
The 2009-2010 Caps team should have been in the list over the other Caps teams that lost to the Pens. Halak stole that series against the best offensive team the Caps ever had. They had Ovi, Semin, Backstrom and Green at their peaks.
The Washington capitals in 2015 - 2018 were magical. Those two losses to the penguins were devastating, but their run in 2018 was unbelievable. Winning against the penguins was almost as good as winning the cup. That whole year was surreal for hockey.
@assman3487 1 is better than none and pen fans like you are nothing but arrogant and classless while caps fans are actually loyal but also classy and respect others
@94cupchamps You got rigth the thing is, why i pick that choice is because i remember Scotty Bowman said my Detroit team in 95-96 was better than my Mtl 1976-1977. Mtl lose with the playoffs 10 games, and won the cup, not the wings.
So is winning the 1st 3 games, NOT “starting off hot”? And that 8 seed was a chicago blackhawks team that was coming off their 1st cup out of 3 in a 5 year span… not exactly an easy out… but hey go off dr know nothing 🤡🤡🤡
I’m going to say choosing Vancouver and saying they flopped because they lost in the Stanley cup finals… like yeah they didn’t win the cup but saying it’s a flop isn’t quite right.
About those 85-86 Oilers, they had about 15 minutes after that own goal by Smith, which in part was forced by Lanny McDonald swooping in on him. So the highly touted Oilers’ offense (some of which are named in the video) couldn’t overcome a one point deficit in more than half a period. You can’t blame Smith for that. For all their firepower they failed to tie up the game.
Even though it is true that the Oilers had a good part of the third period to score another goal, Flames forward Perry Berezan chucked the puck deep into the Oilers zone and went for a line change. It was with NO pressure on Steve Smith when he collected the puck and went to make an outlet pass. Anywa, the funniest thing about this victory is that even when Calgary won, it took an Oiler to score the series clinching goal. ;)
you forgot the 1970-71 Boston Bruins and 1981-82 Edmonton Oilers. The 71 bruins set a record at the time for most regular season points (121 in only a 78 game schedule, and overtime didn't exist back then, so they would have had at least 130 points in an 82 game schedule and with OT shootouts). Also record for most goals in a regular season at the time. They lost to the Canadiens in the opening round, the biggest upset in history at the time. The 81-82 Oilers finished 2nd overall but lost to an LA Kings team 48 points weaker in the standings in the opening round. That still IS the biggest flop in NHL history bar none. I would not count the 2010-11 Vancouver Canucks as a flop, since they did at least get to the finals.
I wouldn’t she’d too many tears for Steve Smith as he ended up winning 3 Stanley cups with the Oilers after that season. He also played for the flames near the end of his career.
To be fair, the 96 Red Wings did lose to a very powerful Colorodo team with multiple HOFers in their lineup. And probably the hottest goalie in the world at the time.
''By the 85-86 season, the Edmonton oilers was the most dominant team the nhl has ever seen at that point''. My friend, you must have forgot about the Richard brother's era. That 5 stanley cups run! It was the most selfless, dominant team to ever play. They played with heart!
Bros forgetting the 2015-2016 cup run for the red wings with although finishing as one of the top teams in the league they got dealt with by the Tampa Bay lightning in round 1. The next season the red wings finished dead last in the standings also having Datsuyk retiring that season and zetterberg retiring just a year later and finished bottom 5 6 consecutive seasons before making a jump in the 22-23 season
Lol. I moved out of Vancouver right before the riots. Like JUST before. Used to live with these guys who each had a favourite team. I was the Habs fan. Because someone had to be.
The title is kinda miss leading. A few of these teams ended up winning the cup right after with the same core players. Now Vancouver and maybe Florida makes sense since they hadn't won it yet. I would have put the 2005-06 and 2006-2007 Sabres but that's just me being a Sabres fan.
The Tampa Bay Lightning have a Stanley Cup and these years accordingly the 20003/2004 STANLEY CUP THE 2019/2020 STANLEY CUP THE 2020/2021 STAN LEY CUP They were back-to back
Yet they don't talk much about Chris Phillips scoring on his own goalie in a Cup Finals game (which was the goal that eventually won the Ducks the 2007 Cup title).
"to never win the Stanley Cup..." I do think the title is a bit misleading, since to me "best to never win..." implies franchises, teams who throughout their entire history have never won the championship, not just great line-ups in a specific playoff year failing to achieve victory and raise the cup. Other than that, good vid. For specific line-ups in particular play-off years... the Detroit Red Wings could have been on your list at least 5 or 6 times - they had a lot of damn good years in the regular season where they still missed winning the cup afterwards. ps: there are 11 NHL teams currently playing that have never won the Stanley Cup.
How could you not include the Bruins meltdown this season on this list? I mean wasn't it enough that they broke all records in the regular season and were then eliminated in the first round by the Panthers who barely made the playoffs? (lowest ranked team to make the playoffs this year)?? How could that not be the BIGGEST playoff flop in NHL history???
A lot of these lists just seem like recency bias. Where is the 1996 Red Wings the greatest team to not win? The 2010 Capitals were even better than the 16 and 17 Capitals. The 1993 Penguins more stacked than the 91 or 92 Pens? The 1976 Flyers? The 1971 Bruins? The 1989 Canadians who were even more stacked than the 86 or 93 Canadians.
A poor list. If you’re going to say the list is “in NHL history” you need to know something about NHL history. Bigger flops than any of these were the 1971 Boston Bruins who completely dominated the season, but were beaten in the first round by Montreal. Or the 1945 Montreal Canadiens who at the time were considered the best team of all time. But were upset by Toronto. Do your homework.
I’ll never forget watching that CBJ-TBL series. I had a playoff bracket pool with a bunch of my friends, and because I love a good underdog story, I was the only one who picked the Jackets. I won that bracket on that series alone.
Now you can officially add the 2022-23 boston bruins to this list
