You can tell in his mind failure has more finality to it like it means over or end. In his mind failure is when you give up or you're not capable of doing something anymore.

  • @tzzimy

Failure in Greek is called "αποτυχία" which means literally "out of luck". In American mentality, first is everything and second is nothing. In Greek mentality, the strength of the second defines the scale of first's victory. Every loss, every victory, even a championship title is never the end of the road. It's a milestone set to be achieved not only with hard work but importantly with luck. If you do not reach it, you adapt your goals. Simple as that.

    • @georgemarco11
      @georgemarco11 Рік тому +3

my friend i think you confuse the word (α-τυχια) with the word (απο-τυχια). in greek "αποτυχια" doesn't mean out of luck, the "απο" in frond suggests "target-στοχος" and the the "lack of it" (and it's an action you participate- you miss your target), so it means out of target- failure. (ατυχια means out of luck, and especially an act where you don't participate-you're unlucky). and victory is a greek word too, and everywhere in the world the winner is celebrated, the second is still the looser. yes of course the second defines the scale but i don't think that's only a greek thing. what i think is americans see the nba like we see the world champion for ex. and even more (esp. in bball which is their thing) so i think they overreact at times (even if the stakes and the money are high), yes sometimes you'll lose and because you raised their expectations they can tear you apart... they dont put it in context, they react. it's the country of opportunity.... you react fast. we, we're kind of the philosophers in this whole thing, haha. esp this kid giannis (though he's not born greek) , brings a point of view that mast be weird for the average young american. (so the ancients, who used to say every non greek is a barbarian and at the same time, whoever has the greek education is a greek, maybe they knew something...)

This was the best, most intellectual answer ever by an athlete and if taken in the right context it answers many problems with how public figures are treated. Basketball is Giannis profession, winning a title is the intent but you will never win every season. A Dr loses patients, sometimes misdiagnosis, does that make the dr a failure. Lawyers lose cases, are they failures. Accountants mess up sometimes, does that make them failures. Reporters screw up all the time, inaccurate information, missed deadlines, does that make them failures. The point is there are objectives in doing a job, but winning is more about the journey than the result, otherwise all 31 teams that don’t win are they all losers. Giannis gained my absolute respect from this interview by putting life in its proper perspective. The only failure is never trying in life, but there is disappointment. Let’s go Heat 🔥🔥🔥🔥

The most lovable and blessed player in the league. A man who lived his childhood hard and gained enormous experience going through hunger and poverty. A humble man because he started from scratch and reached the top with the Grace of God and the right guidance from his immigrant parents. A person who knows how to appreciate and respect the values of life and not the garbage that surrounds us. The best role model for children all over the world who play sports and want to become better people. He is absolutely right in what he says, but unfortunately the half-educated crowd cannot understand him. The one and only face of the NBA for the next ten years at least. unique and special in this miserable time....

It is a failure as a team who won the 2021 NBA Championship, that was #1 in the NBA this 2022-23 season, was the #1 seed in the playoffs, was favored to be in the Finals, and lost to a play-in team. I don't care if Giannis was hurt because it's the coaches job to make adjustments. The Heat are small compared to the Bucks. Where was Milton at in this series? Giannis is talking like MJ and the Bulls had gaps during their championship runs.

Failure & disappointment are literally synonyms. Or disappointment can be the emotion that comes from failure (aka not succeeding, he literally said THE TEAM didn't succeed THIS SEASON 😆).
If failure doesn't exist neither does success & vice versa. If that's the case why play? Bc winning is the goal....not reaching the goal is failing, which Giannis says isn't a thing

When you have the best record in the league and lose 4-1 in the first round to the 8th seed it is a failure.

The question was about THIS SEASON, not his life, his family, his long term goals. THIS SEASON AS A TEAM. He gave a long winded (very thoughtful😅) answer that ended up including the definition of fail & success. But failure doesn't exist so neither does success? So nobody in the NBA is failing/losing or successful/winning why keep score then? Why play? Why do ppl watch or root for a team?

Kobe really started this with his public declaration that if he didn't win a ring he viewed the season as a failure. I'm not blaming Kobe but i remember this whole failure success question started around 2008 when he said that after losing to Celtics i think. They asked Durant that one year and he said he don't care how Kobe or what Kobe said. It takes some stones to say that and publicly set a bar that high but I love the cerebral manor in which Giannis handed this.

The reporter didnt ask if Giannis was a failure. Clearly in the big scheme of basketball or life he is not, nor would anyone call him that. Rather he asked if "the season was a failure". Failure = "a situation in which someone does not do something they should do or are expected to do" Webster Dictionary. If you have the best record in the league and get bounced in the first round, then you clearly did not accomplish what you or others expected you to do. However, with that being said, I do love Giannis outlook on life and perhaps this is the mindset that all hyper-successful have. It would be a fascinating study

  • @joetigo2928

the thing is it is a failure if your ambition is to win a ring, it is not if you are happy to just make it to the playoff. It is a perspective. Accepting failure is not a bad thing either. It is part of success. call spade a spade, failure a failure. no need to sugarcoat.

Yay to you it's a failure but to him it's not it's all subjective. But using Gainnis mindset of what count as failure I think Dan's point is Lebron's career is closing and for what he wants (to be the goat) it's win or nothing while Gainnis still has years to learn. But in general I'll have to disagree with Dan on the Lebron point because of things like longevity being impressive even if there's no ring.

So I guess having the first ceed ..if you don't go all the way it's a failure...in all the years in sports who have a similar system of regular season and playoffs...how many teams reached the end...its certainly not 100% I bet its not even 50%...so that means all regular season no1 teams who didn't win a chip are failures...what about second ceed..or 3rd ceed...what about an athlete who compete in the Olympics and finishes 4th or 8th or 12 in a Olympic run..he must be a failure...and what about other sports...like tennis..only one gets to win the tournament..so the rest of 63 or 127...that compete are failures...there is a different word the journalist could have used..a disappointment.. or an upset....but he deliberately chose the word failure....which has gravity...In greek failure..literally is translated to run out of luck...apotychia...so maybe yes bucks years didn't end like many hoped or believed it would end cause they were no 1 ceeds..but it wasn't a total failure...if you like movies watch. I think players should not be asked questions about what happened in the game or how they feel about the result of a game, etc. particularly players of the losing team because there is more emotional, personal and sensitivity factor that goes with the context of every question. The team's objective was not accomplished. Was there any more upsetting, disappointing and disheartening feeling than that?
Players get emotional and irritated especially if they are asked stupid and senseless questions and we all understand that players are humans, too. They are not machines that at a push of a button will respond mechanically.
Most times, during this post-game interviews, the emotional state and sensitivity of players are completely forgotten and disrespected when they are made to face reporters with their annoying, irritating and humiliating questions. The NBA should stop this practice.
A better arrangement would be, reporters will only interview the coaching staff of the losing team. They are the ones in-charge of the plan and operation of the team, hence, they should be capable to dissect the result of the game. The players, for obvious reasons, don't have to go to the process of reliving the upsetting events that just happened. Nobody wants to go back in the just concluded disappointment and refresh the hurt that it caused. A little respect will go a long way.
The current practice of interviewing the coaching staff and players on the winning team can continue.

The thing is, Michael's Bulls were NOT the favorites in the first years when he lost. For example, He was drafted in 1984. The Bulls were a lottery team. He dragged that lottery team to the playoffs IN HIS FIRST SEASON, and then lost in the 1st round. That's a success. Bulls sucked still, but MJ was great. Then MJ goes up against the 1986 Celtics. The Celtics were FAVORED, and historically one of the greatest defenses of all time. MJ torches their defense, puts up still record 63 pts in a playoff game. Bulls lose. Why? Because the Celtics were expected to win, the Bulls still sucked. But MJ still did great. Meanwhile, the Bucks were the #1 SEED!!!! They had the best record IN THE ENTIRE NBA. MJ wasn't out here losing as a 1 seed to an 8 seed in first rounds!!!!!!!! It's completely different. When MJ was favored, he DOMINATED, 6-0, TWO 3-peats. Giannis is coping.
