Those damn things had to be about as close to perfection in a single engine, propeller-driven fighter as was ever produced. They're just incredible to see, hear, and just plain look at. Where I live in Salem, OR, there is a fellow who owns a P-51D and the last time they ever had an airshow in Salem, that fellow was one of the highlights of the day.
Build and designed in such a short time a complete credit to American know how . Just one beautiful thorough bred . Number one in my book. PS not forgetting Rolls Royce Merlin .
The thrumming roar of those "Merlin" engines in the Mustangs gives me goosebumps listening to them. Starting off the video with the vocal music from "Empire Of The Sun" was a grand stroke. Brought back to mind the scene in the film as the lad watches Mustangs bomb and strafe the camp where he is located. All he can do is yell "Cadillac of the Skies! ....Horsepower!!"
5:47 "Those big stripes are very very important, so that...allied ground troops wouldn't shoot Allied aircraft..." That didn't work out too well for George Preddy...

Then Ray Hanna did a low, slow fly-by, waving to the boy.
