A whole season of Dexter being on the run with a manhunt full of his old friends from miami metro and other characters we know would have been so insane I cannot comprehend why they didn't decide to go down that route.
Because that's a risky choice that would have taken good writers to pull off and they didn't have that. So for all later seasons they went a conservative route with a shitty story that doesn't commit to anything and that's why they were trash.
I appreciate your dedication. These reviews are amazing. I am STILL upset about the ending. I hope anyone involved in the production of New Blood finds your channel.
These popular TV shows should always get a few hardcore fans to be in the writers room. They always tend to come up with better and more coherent storylines. Seriously Showtime shouldve just picked a few UA-camrs like Cody, Sean chandler and Jeremy jahns to help the writers out. A good example is Cobra Kai which is a show that is actually written by a few hardcore fans.
The scene in the bar with Dexter & Issac in season seven is the single greatest explanation of the character ever. It perfectly describes who he is and what his motivation is.
This might be an unpopular opinion but I think Season 5 is very underrated. I love the idea of Dexter saving someone and helping them get their revenge.
Dexter has one of his monologue "thinking" moments and then Doakes says "Stop grining like a f**ing psycho and get back to work!" was one of my favorite scenes with Doakes.
I love the first episode of S6, when Dexter goes to his high school reunion just to kill one of his classmates. Dark humor very reminiscent of the first season. And they should've had Brother Sam in the show for at least the entire season.
I respected that with New Blood they tried a different style and tone, but they didn’t replace it with anything equally compelling. The original run had such a unique flavor to it with the quirky humor, iconic musical score, consistent narration, little bouts of surrealism. Then New Blood just kinda looks and feels like any other “prestige” cable show nowadays. It made Dexter not feel special anymore.
I was thinking the same as well. They brought Dexter back for a revival and completely changed everything. Got rid of all the core elements of the OG show we loved and replaced it with Dexter being an idiot, Harrison and Dexter arguing all the time and pointless high school/teenager bullsh't. Seriously the original run never had any teenage filler and New Blood had so much of it was really frustrating. Even all the side characters were sh't no one measures up to Deb, Batista, Masuka, Doakes, Matthews heck even Quinn and Laguerta lol. The small town was really boring and should not have been the setting of the show. I get it they can't do it in Miami but I reckon LA would've been a good setting for the revival. That city has so many people that no one notices so its easy to hide and make a new identity there whilst doing his Dexter thing.
A lot of sub-plots in OG Dexter also weren't particularly compelling. I mean, did people REALLY care about that guy Deb dated in Season 3, for example? Or Batista and LaGuerta's romance drama?
@@ThePreciseClimber yea but it was such a small plot going on in the show nobody cared especially when dexter would be hunting down the big bad for the season you would honestly forget about the small details as for new blood that was it’s plot that stupid boring pointless filler bullshit that nobody wanted to watch with the teenage drama and all that like wtf are we watching.
@@nn-hx8oe ikr I don’t understand how anyone can say season 5 is a great season to me season 5 is where it dropped the ball for dexter they had this 4 great seasons all intense and interesting to watch and setup a crazy ending for season 4 with Rita being killed it was so suspicious it should have been what got Miami metro to start looking in on dexter and instead of it being a dragged out 8season show it could have been just 6 with season 5 being what happens after Rita died and why trinity would choose her when she wasn’t his normal ritual victim(kills in 4s) and everybody starts wondering where the hell dexter goes when he says he’s “working late” and they finally realize he’s the bay harbor butcher and season 6 is the full manhunt trying to track him down and eventually kill him with the electric chair. That would put it up there with breaking bad as one of the best shows ever.
Michael is a phenomenal actor, but he was clearly physically & mentally tired of Dexter’s character. The character is so emotionally, physically & psychologically charged, that I completely understand why he wanted to just get rid of him.
Well this aged extremely poorly now didn’t it? 😂 guess it’s actually kinda hard to pretend you know exactly what other people are thinking! He did a variety interview talking about he would LOVE to continue playing dexter for the foreseeable future and now it’s been confirmed he will be back in the next spin-off. Lesson of the day is to stop just pretending you know how someone feels through a screen! ❤
Season 5 is very underrated imo and personally is my favorite season. I always liked Lumen, Dexter hooking up with Lumen makes more sense than whatever that supposed to be with Hannah in S7..... Lumen and Dexter had a chemistry, a bond and a connection. And Julia Stiles did a such a great job with the role.
@@JohnDonovan1968 I felt like the connection between Hannah and Dexter was so forced and manufactured. I agree that Lumen and Dexter had real chemistry. I felt like she was the only one who really accepted him for who he was. They did a real diservice to the character and Dexter with that idiotic Season 5 ending.
Joey agreed with Dexter doing it, angel understood. The scene where they confront him you can tell that because he killed Deb they wanted the guy to die, and because Dexter did make it look like self defense they supported him doing it
I love Cody’s passion for this show it really is one of the best! This has been one of my favorite videos he’s made since I started watching the channel! Awesome review Cody I totally agree on the list 💯🤘🏼
@@ARBLACKx if only new blood was a cobra Kai type revival with true fans as the writers we could’ve gotten something better guess we may never know.... I still bet they try to set Harrison up as a killer in a spin-off with dexter in his head guiding him which sounds interesting but would have to be done properly!
@@nosidam1989 yeah exactly. Theres literally no divisiveness with Cobra Kai because the hardcore fans are behind that show and they know exactly what the audience wants. Definitely not the case with Dexter which seems like its made by people who just want to piss everyone off. IMO A harrison spin-off shouldve been done after 3 seasons of New Blood. He needed way more character development and time with Dexter so that the fans can get on board with him before warranting his own spin-off. In an ideal world season 2 of New Blood has Dexter and Harrison in LA as a dark vigilante duo killing people and then season 3 is the manhunt one where Dexter gets caught and is put on trial. And then they couldve done the Harrison spin-off.
While I agree that adding the ''Deb in love with Dexter'' storyline in season 6 was unnecessary, actually it made sense. For me at least. I always suspected that there was something more behind their relationship other than regular brother-sister love. Jennifer Carpenter, revealed to Red Carpet News TV she always knew Deb was in love with Dexter on some level, so she played it like that from the start. I noticed the signs. Just a few examples that came to mind now: In season 2 Deb described to Dexter how loud she could be during sex while Dexter was embarrassed by the subject; In season 3 after Deb got a new hairstyle and Dexter praised it, telling her it was ''beautiful'' Deb suddenly became all shy if not blushed, BUT the most hilarious scene was when in season 2 Deb walked into the room where Dexter lay naked on the bed after he just had sex with Lila and had to cover himself quickly, because Deb stood there and talked - Dexter even asked: ''Deb, did knocking occur to you?'' :D
I was completely surprised and shocked when it happened. I scoffed when the psychiatrist insinuated it, only for it to be true. It wasn't a deal breaker for me, but on the first watch that storyline bugged me. I initially believed and I still do, that they added it to justify Deb not turning Dexter in, which bugs me because it wasn't necessary. I don't believe for a second that this was the intention all along, but as a hypothetical lets say that it was... I guarantee that the reasoning behind it was... how she could justify not turning him in after finding out who he was. It serves no other purpose besides that and that purpose wasn't necessary. She even let the surviving barrel girl and her vigilante partner go, which is essentially the same principle. On rewatched that storyline doesn't detract from the show.
@@dinglbarry1275 people blow that story line up like it was an entire season long. It was literally about 25 minutes of plot that motivated Dep to track dexter down at the church and led to her discovering his killing.
@@bjt-lz1jl - I’m not against Deb being in love with Dexter, if it was necessary to drive a particular storyline forward, but it’s perplexing given that the future storyline would be the same either way. Deb already proved that she wouldn’t turn Dexter in the moment she let the two unbeknownst to her vigilante killers go at the end of season 5. Then finding out that her father was aware of it and helped create it is just one more reason. In all actuality the notion of Deb even contemplating turning Dexter in seems far fetched. In general people tend to rationalize things when it comes to themselves and the people they care about. A true dilemma for her would be if she found out that Dexter was merely a serial killer killing random people, but killing bad people would be easy for her to rationalize given everything. And sure it only consumed a very small portion of the story, which once again is baffling since the idea of having your lead and second lead character of s TV series pronounce their love for the other after 6 seasons (siblings or not). That’s a cornerstone moment of any show, regardless of how it’s utilized beyond that. As I said this doesn’t negatively impact the overall show for me… I consider it a miner misstep that I overlook and even now accept as I watch the series a gazillion times around.
9. New Blood- Good season but the final episode ruined it for me. 8. Season 6- I was spoiled to the big reveal that Colin Hanks's character had already killed his professor and was pretending to be him after I watched episode 2. So it tainted the season for me but I still enjoyed it. 7. Season 8- Didn't like what they did with Harry's code but Charlotte Rampling was a good addition for the most part. 6. Season 7- Great season with a great main plot as well as a awesome side story for Quinn. 5. Season 3- Miguel was a solid villain and friend for Dexter. Love Dexter's daydream when he realizes Miguel used him and he destroys his office. Very funny. 4. Season 1- Perfect start to the show. Brian Moser was a unique character among Dexter's enemies. The way he planted clues only Dexter would see. 3. Season 5- I love season 5 I think it's a perfect follow up to season 4 with Dexter trying to find a reason to keep going after Rita's tragic death. He thinks about leaving Miami and becoming a full time killer in another city but finds reasons to stay. 2. Season 4- Just an awesome season start to finish. 1. Season 2- Perfect season for me. Doakes may have been the good guy in their rivalry but I think he is Dexter's biggest enemy. Every other villain for the most part Dexter has had a friendly relationship with them at some point Trinity, Miguel. But Doakes has always disliked and suspected Dexter, they've never gotten along. Which just makes Dexter's victory over him even better.
Regarding season 6, even if you got spoiled, I doubt you experienced the season any different from most viewers. That was so obvious and most people figured that part out right away.
My Ranking: 9: Season 8 - 7/10 8: Season 6 - 8/10 7: Season 5 - 8.5/10 6: Dexter: New Blood - 8.5/10 5: Season 3 - 9.5/10 4: Season 7 - 9.5/10 3: Season 1 - 10/10 2: Season 4 - 10/10 1: Season 2 - 10/10 The pacing of dexter new blood was like 1-------2-------3------4-----5-----678910AHHHHHH
My brother got me into Dexter 2 months ago and I finished the first 8 seasons right when New Blood wrapped up. I’m loving all of the Dexter content your putting out and I pretty much agree with your feelings on the seasons
Honestly what really irritated me on the ending was the writers saying that no one would guess it and Clyde Phillips saying "It would blow minds". That just brought my expectations through the roof which made Dexter: New Blood's ending worse than S8 in my opinion.
He really should never have said that. By saying something like that you turn the most unexpected ending into the most expected ending. When you say something like that, people will automatically rule out the obvious endings and start expecting some twist shock value and in this case, it was super obvious. The biggest problem though is not the ending itself but how we got there and how disconnected it felt.
Something nobody seems to talk about season 8 is how dour all the characters are. Dexter's act as a generic happy go lucky guy whose just nice and helpful doesn't really fit the serious demeanor of the people closest to him. Everyone in the first 7 series had quite bright and colourful personalities, all very unique people (which makes Dexter's generic personality more fitting.)
the ending of 9...so upsetting that my brain decided to dream another extra episode that ended the show in a better way. and my dream was better written than that last episode LMAO
Kinda bold of you to put SE05 above SE03 but i can understand. S3 had too many boring subplots and the main killer was lame, as to S5 there were some really great episodes, too bad the last one ended in such a dumb way
My list is pretty much the same as yours, except I have New Blood ahead of Season 6. The Doomsday stuff was just too much for me, I was not surprised that the professor was already dead, and the whole Deb/Dexter "relationship" thing just put me off. As for New Blood, I actually didn't mind the very end -- not that it was awesome, but I understood why it had to end that way. Also, the next to last episode, The Family Business, was one of the best Dexter episodes in the entire series. Overall that's enough for me to put NB ahead of S6.
To me Dexter was really at its best in its first two seasons. The first season is just so intriguing that it’s hard to turn away from. Season two ramps up the tension and has a lot of moments where you wonder how he’s going to get away with things. After that I still enjoy the show, but I think especially in hindsight knowing how things play out I enjoy the seasons less. Season three is fun because of Miguel, but overall is a bit of a dip in quality. As much as I like season four it kind of is really the beginning of the end. Trinity is great, but this is really kind of the point with the show where looking at the remaining seasons you realize how much of a nosedive the show takes. The remaining seasons aren’t the best. Season five has its moments. I agree if Deb had found out about Dexter this season it would have made it better. Season six onwards I don’t care much about. I still will watch those seasons of the show if it’s on, but the show lost itself at the end and just was never able to reach its heights again. Every time I thought it might redeem itself it found a way to fuck something up continually.
I was only disappointed with season 5 because it’s as if Dexter went and moved on from Rita’s death in the very first episode. I felt that this should have been the season that his anger and regret of not killing Trinity sooner gets the best of him and he starts becoming a much less neat monster. His ritual starts becoming more hasty, he’s not cleaning up after himself like he used too (sort of like new blood), cracks of the Bay Harbor Butcher are starting to seep through that Miami metro starts catching wind. And this would eventually lead to Deb at the end of the season, finding out who he is.
I think thats what the show was implying if he didn't find lumen to help. I mean u saw where he murdered A random dude in a bathroom because of the grief over rita. Lumen was his light so to speak, hell her name is reference to light.
@@joshwhite557 yea I understand that and your right. I just wanted a different scenario where he is on his own and to not have another girlfriend so soon to solve his problems.
I consider the first 5 seasons really good. Most say the first 4 seasons but I didn't really feel a drop in quality until S6. I got into the show just as S4 ended. New Blood should have had more urgency and not treated like another season of Dexter focusing on the big bad. Maybe the story line of season 2 with the focus of S7. I dunno anymore... My ranking is 9) S8 8) S6 7) S7 6) New Blood (hated the direction at the end) 5) S5 (basically tied with S3) 4) S3 3) S2 2) S1 1) S4
When Rita’s like I hope they catch the bay harbor butcher today I hope they hurt him have a good day. Dexters inner dialogue was like make up your mind
My full listing from best to worst: 1 - SE02 (it escalates the conflicts of season one in a brilliant way, and Doakes is a legend) 2 - SE04 (close second, mainly because of Trinity, Lithgow's performance was just fantastic and the twist at the end was devastating) 3 - SE01 (it sets up the show in the best way possible, carefully indroducing each character, Dexter relationship with Brian was very compelling) 4 - SE03 (kind of a downgrade from SE02, but still entretained the hell out me with the whole "Dexter gets a friend" storyline) 5 - SE05 (a season that had alot to live up to after what many people would consider the most shocking main character death on a TV show, but they pulled it off nicely, giving a satisfying resolution to the whole drama of Rita's death, and indroducing a great new character, Lumen) 6 - SE07 (really can't understand why people think this season is so good, dispite having some nice moments, it just felt like a bad fan fic) 7 - SE09 (New Blood) (it felt even more superflous than the last 3 seasons of the show's original run, and an even dumber ending, i wont put it bellow seasons 6 and 8 because the first 3 episodes had some really nice moments) 8 - SE06 (don't know what the hell they were thinking LOL, only good ep. was the one with Brian) 9 - SE08 (absolute dogshit, every single episode, it made me wish they had cancelled the show after season 5)
Love your reviews/analyses of Dexter! I pretty much agree with your rankings. I think the first four episodes are fantastic. There's nothing like season one with Dexter cruising in his car in Miami and the way his whole backstory unfolded along with the ice truck killer. I love origin stories, and Dexter's is so compelling. It's a bummer that New Blood didn't deliver...
I love every season, there are some I don’t like as much as others but for me, no season is bad. This is one of my all time favorite shows that I’ve consumed over a dozen times. I love new blood too, I watched it 3 times in a row and thought the ending was chill. My favorite seasons are #1 trinity and #2 Miguel Prado season
Why did Angela connect Dexter to the bay harbor butcher when Miami metro never discovered that he used drugs? Why did Angela say “ketamine used by the bay harbor butcher” when Dexter used M99? Why did Dexter kill Logan when it was obvious that they had no evidence and he had a perfect cover story thanks to Kurt being stupid (he saw Kurt kill Matt, investigated as a forensics guy and Harrison was threatened so he couldn’t share)? Why did Harrison get offended by coach logans death when he knew him for 2 weeks and hardly interacted with him? Why was that enough to kill his father?
You're the first person I've seen talk about how season 5 should have ended and I actually love that idea! That would have been so interesting and could have led to some different but interesting storylines
6:35 Dexter not killing for a decade and being sloppy because of it, Kurt's storyline, exploring Harrison's urges was good until they went from "He's like Dexter" to "Oh no he's normal and is just angry at his dad for abandoning him" despite framing Ethan for a school shooting as an excuse to attack him, breaking the wrestling team bully's arm and going after him and his friends with a razor proving otherwise. I liked episode 9 with Dexter teaching Harrison the Code with the flashback to an unseen Miami kill of Dexter's and the like but imaginary Deb, Harrison spending most of his screentime being whiny and defensive whenever Dexter tried to talk to him, Angela seemingly having 2 personalities where one was a great cop who solved the Bay Harbour Butcher case and the other being an idiot who couldn't solve a murder case she'd been obsessed with for 25 years that her best friend was the first victim of and when she finally had Kurt, the killer himself dead to rights she believed a sob story he told and let him go, Audrey just existing to be Harrison's girlfriend and nothing else and the ending sucked.
New Blood below season 6 is wild to me. 6 is filled with plotholes and is just garbage overall. I really liked the fresh feel of new blood, liked the main killer, liked how they incorporated a real world thing (indigenous women going missing along that highway in canada) into the new setting of Alaska. Imo, new blood is one of the stronger seasons overall, tho admittedly the ending did feel a bit flubbed.
There isn't a single season of this show that I flat out dislike, but there are certainly flawed seasons and there are certain seasons that I don't enjoy as much as others. 9. New Blood- Although I was very pleased to see Dexter come back, I'm very mixed on this season overall. Some good things, but also some bad things, and as someone who defends certain elements of season 8, I was one of the very few who didn't see a reason for this season to exist. If you aren't going to improve upon what came before, which in my opinion, the ending of this season didn't feel like an improvement at all, it makes this season feel more disposable and possibly the most disposable of the entire series. Also, I missed the classic Dexter elements from the original show that this new reboot just didn't have nearly enough of. 8. Season 8- a very disappointing season overall, but still not one that I necessarily dislike. I think The Brain Surgeon is a decent villain that I don't think people give credit for. It feels a lot like a season 7 in the way that it has multiple story threads going throughout, but it's just executed not as good as it was in the previous season. Deb's death should have been written much better, I will agree with everyone on that point. But Dexter ending up in self exile feels like a more fitting end for his character in my opinion. It had a bit more ambiguity to it than just definitively killing him or capturing him. Despite New Blood having some good qualities and despite how flawed this season is, I'm more prone to rewatch season 8 more and be more satisfied with the ending. 7. Season 5- this is a decent season about Dexter overcoming his grief and trying to redeem himself after not saving Rita. But I'm not really a fan of Jordan Chase as a villain, he's one of the more forgettable adversaries if you ask me. Also, there are certain story elements that just feel like they're resolved by the end and carry no weight into the later seasons. But it's still solid enough. 6. Season 6- a weird, yet oddly interesting season. I think the doomsday killer is more interesting than Chase, the kills are very bizarre, the ending of Deb finding out Dex's secret is a great way to wrap everything up. Deb supposedly being in love with Dexter is just wrong and completely unnecessary. It drops this season down several spots just for that reason alone. But it seems I like this season more than most. 5. Season 7- despite being a bit scatterbrained and having several different story threads, it somehow still works. I love this season despite it's few flaws. Deb coming to terms with Dexter I've always thought was fantastic, Hannah was a nice addition, Ray Stevenson's character I really enjoyed as this villain who eventually turns into a friend of sorts for Dexter. Laguerta finally discovering the true Bay Harbor Butcher was intense and very heartbreaking, especially for Deb. All in all, very good. 4. Season 3- Miguel Prado is one of my favorite characters on this show. His friendship then his rivalry with Dexter was awesome. The Skinner was a bit of a dud, but the whole story revolving around Dex and Miguel was such a great experience that it's easy to overlook it. Love this one. 3. Season 2- this should have been the final season, but nonetheless, this season was really great. The whole investigation into the Bay Harbor Butcher was gripping from start to finish. I can confirm Lundy is most definitely a god (love that character). Lyla is a great addition and very charming, but yet very deadly. The confrontation with Doakes is intense and very engaging. Nothing really negative to say about this one. 2. Season 4- I know this is a lot of people's favorite season, but it's not quite mine, it's very close though. The Trinity Killer is definitely the best villain on the show. John Lithgow gives one of the best performances I've ever seen. Seeing Dexter in a new element as a husband and a father is very interesting and has a lot of great moments throughout. The ending is absolutely gut wrenching and tragic for sure. It's an awesome season, no doubt. I'm just a bit more partial to the season that started it all. 1. Season 1- I absolutely love this introduction to one of my favorite characters. It's darkly comedic tone is so refreshing and I think the tone is nailed perfectly here . All the characters are so entertaining and so well fleshed out here. The Ice Truck Killer toying with Dexter and finally being revealed as his long lost brother was genius. This is the most emotional season for me personally, with Dex being forced to kill his own brother is heartbreaking and Michael C. Hall in that scene is mesmerising. God, I love this first season so much, I've rewatched it numerous times, more than any other. It's on the my top 10 favorite TV seasons of all time and it's easily my number 1.
Man, why do all the creators on the internet simply have no opinion of their own and simply always reproduce what the critics say???? This obsession that the first 4 are good and the last 4 are horrible has simply stuck in people's heads as if it were the absolute truth and they don't even reflect on it. For example, Season 7 is better than Season 1 and MUCH BETTER than Season 3, which is the worst Season ever, apart from New Blood, which was even made by the beloved director who managed to make an ending worse than the Lumberjack
31:44-The face to face we got with Trinity in whatever episode it was in was so good. I felt the same way about that face to face as i did with the face-to-face we got after 20 years with Michael Myers and Lauri Strode at the door with through the glass!
Great review! I personally loved S7 first, because it was so intense back in 2013 or when it was released. After rewatch, I realized it's really bad season :D It feels very rushed, like Debra finding out Dexter killed Travis in one episode, that he's BHB in the next episode and then accepted it's ok, because he killed Spiltzer in the next... like what... you can't do such a story parkour :D And the season also changed what Dexter's Dark Passanger is... it was some sort of hobby before, but suddenly it's heroin-like addiction and when he stops, he suddenly have fantasies about murdering people... what..? Since when it does work like that. I wouldn't mind if there was a season when he would decide to stop killing and realize it's an addiction, but it has to be his decision, not Debra telling him to do so. Hannah didn't work for me neither, because I think he had much better chemistry with Lumen. S6 - I hated the religious things... I wouldn't mind if we have a season where Dexter explores religion and his own beliefs, but it has to be one of the first ones... Not after his wife was murdeded and such... It felt unrealistic he would even try to understand religion after all that bad things that happened to him. S2 - not bad season, but it should have happened so much later that Dexter is exposed S5 - is great IMO. They got rid of the previous storylines quickly (children, Rita's dead) and focused on the Barrel gang... it felt too quick, but overall it was great. I love how he found the one barrel and then raised the flashlight to reveal there is a whole collection of them in the pond. It always gives me chills... and the chemistry with Lumen was very natural. Great season... people hate it, but I love it. S1 - is the best... I think it's even better than S4 in my opinion... The story is very complex, each episode is like a little storyline, like it's own small story and Dexter learns something new in each episode. The fact it looks like boring criminal investigation in the first episode, but then boom.. it's personal, the killer knows about Dexter!... and then how he threw the human head on his car... ha ha. Each plot-twist is delivered in a very smart way... side stories are interesting too for most parts and eventually connects the mains story dots... for example the psychologist plot is a side story but eventually it helps Dexter to remember what happened to him in the container. I also love it's based on the first book, but they made great changes, when they cut bad ideas from the book and used their own, better ones. Also the first book was full of strange dreams that Dexter had about his brother and I like they cut it for the show. S1 is simply 10/10
I rank season 1 above season 2 just because of how impactful Brian's death scene is (and of course the rest of the season that set it up). Saddest moment in the show by far. I'll be damned if I don't hope every time that Dexter would agree with Brian and kill Deb. I think that would be way less sad. Also rewatching season 2 right now and Lila has way too much screen time. She's just yuck and makes me want to fast forward every since she's in except when she's nude.
I just finished new blood and agree the ending is terrible if not worse than the original but imagine if they make a 2nd season starting with dexter waking up in a prison hospital bed in Miami.
Honestly from worst to best I’d rank them 8, 9, 6, 3, 1, 5, 2, 7, 4 I found season 7 to be more intense than the Lundy investigation on the cop side, very interesting with the dynamic between Deb and Dexter, Isaak Sirko honestly rivaling Trinity in terms of how interesting he was as an antagonist albeit with less of a dynamic with Dexter. If the Romance between Dexter and Hannah was a bit more organic I’d rank it number 1 but i found it weirdly forced initially. I was absolutely shocked he would let her go as i didn’t see any chemistry between them beforehand apart from the 1 scene leading up to it. A bigger twist than Doomsday tbh.
Sirko was awesome though I really loved Lundy too. Apples and oranges to me really. But yeah couldn't agree more about Hannah and the lack of chemistry btwn them but I feel like it's more coming from her end b/c I think Michael C Hall had pretty solid chemistry with the rest of his leading ladies (w/ the exception of Angela maybe). Hannah just had all the charisma of a wet sponge IMO 🧽 😒
Can we please discuss how Harrison in New Blood didn’t look AT ALL like he did as a kid?? The kid was blonde, but the teen had brown hair that you could tell was natural and not dyed. I could never really see him as Harrison!
Yeah and i think it did not made sense Dexter 's son with Rita being so pale, blonde and bright blue eyed like those baby twin actors that played Harrison. Sure Rita was blonde but her eyes were not bright blue and Dexter also did not had blue eyes and blonde hair 😅
To me: Season 4: Jon Lithgow Season 1: Overall coherent and well paced Season 6: Love the themes and the creativity Season 2: Well executed and thought provoking Season 9: Loved the relationships Season 3: Liked the Family themes but was uninterested in the bad guys Season 7: All over the place Season 5: Disliked both the relationships and the bad guys Season 8: Incoherent and washy motives
Seasons 6, 8 and New Blood ARE the only objectively BAD seasons in the show, season 5 had some really great episodes and season 7 was pretty watchable thanks to Isaac.
I pretty much agree 100% with your list. The only thing I'd probably change is I'd put new blood above season 6. Loved New blood as I was watching it but with the ending and sitting back and thinking about it I've lost alot of that love for it already. Sucks that we got let down by an ending of such a good show twice!
22:08 Dexter and Miguel was the only good "Dexter teaches someone the Code" storyline. Season 8's Zach Hamilton was a waste of time since the Brain Surgeon killed him about 1 episode later and Harrison went from wanting to learn it to suddenly wanting to kill Dexter for his out of character killing of Logan.
This is my ranking now sorry it's different to everyone else. 9. Season 8 8. Season 6 7. Season 5 6. Season 7 5. Season 3 4. New blood 3. Season 2 2. Season 1 1. Season 4
Season 7 was easily the most underrated/surprising season. Other than season 4, it's easily my favourite. The whole dynamic between Dexter and Deb once she finds out his secret and how she comes to help him out, the dilemma between doing the right thing and helping out Dexter who she loves. Epic 👏
I agree... I loved that season just because of them. How they navigated that relationship now that Deb was aware of who Dexter really was... And how that changed everything for her... I thought it was great writing overall.. Not everything was perfect about it, but for the most part... I loved that season...
Man that is almost my exact order. Maybe new blood and season 5 swapped. Also maybe 6 and 7 swapped but we are talking specs of a point. If someone made me pick an order on here yours is closest. I loved lumen in season 5. Doakes was one of the most impactful characters with such a limited presence. The BHB storyline carried throughout the whole series. Trinity was the best villain followed closely by Kurt Caldwell. My least two favorites were 8 and 3
I actually didn’t think Dexter started going downhill to after the “RUN” episode in season 7 episode 4. After that, Hannah McKay’s existence caused me to like the show way less
Season 7 is very VERY underrated. The Spelzer scenes were exciting, and his death scene was probably my favorite of all time for humor reasons (my most rewatched scene in Dexter series, beside Masuka's Season 5 crime scene analysis of storage container double murder scene). Sirko was absolutely mesmerizing and bad-ass at the same time, and that cat & mouse game between him and Dexter was brilliant from both ends. And Hanna was my favorite of all the women in Dexter's life- the most calm and centered, most understanding, most intelligent, and least whiny/annoying.
I agree for the most part... A couple things I will say, #1 I agree that the last 5 minutes of New Blood were really bad... It might be a worse ending than season 8.… But, the rest of the season was pretty entertaining... I personally rank it above season 6,7 and 8... But I understand where you are coming from #2 Season 5 might actually be my favorite... I know I am probably alone here... But the thing I absolutely love about Dexter is that he's basically Batman that kills people in this sick serial killer ritual... And season 5 is really the only one where you can 100% say "Dexter is the hero"... Maybe you can claim that about season 1 and Deb being the "damsel in destress"... But it is because of Dexter... I don't know... Season 5 is just as good in my eyes as 1-4, it may even be a little better than the rest 🤷 #3 your top 2 seasons are probably most people's choices as top 2 also... I don't hate them, but I don't entirely agree either... Lila is annoying (not because she kills Doakes either)... And as far as Season 4 goes, Arthur Mitchell is annoying... And season 4 is where I actually had to take a break the first time through... First of all, I think I found Arthur Mitchell to be extremely creepy (and also annoying)... The whole getting into the bathtub with them, and that scene with the woman on the roof, were extremely disturbing... And I think I was going through a bad break up at the time and was heart broken and it didn't seem like the best show for me to be watching at the time 😝
I re-watched all seasons before New Blood and I was surprised how much my perspective changed from the first time I watched them. I'll probably be in the minority with my list but here it goes : 9- New Blood. I could write a whole essay on that shitty season. Boring characters, too many conveniences, awful ending, Dexter's an idiot and the story was predictable all way through. I really really hated New Blood. I'll probably never watch it again. I lost 10 hours of my life with this season. It was appalling. 8- Season 5 (I know...8 is not in 8th place lol). When re-watched it again, I found myself really bored with this season. I like Julia Stiles, but I didn't like her acting in the season and Dexter trusted her like too quickly. Didn't like the villains too. It made me realized how much I didn't connect with this season at all. Yawn. 7- Season 8. While it's a still a bad season, as a second watch, I kind of appreciated the overall idea of Dr Vogel. The execution wasn't great, but I respect what they were trying to do. I still hated that Deb just died because she deserved so much better, but like the first time around, I still liked the ending of Dexter exiling himself. It made me think of The Godfather part 3 ending. Since we know Dexter has feelings, I always thought that yes, he tried to kill himself but failed, so he decided to live far away with his remorse and regrets alone. If he wasn't to get caught or killed, I thought it was a great ending for the character. It's the execution overall of the season and finale that wasn't great at all. 6- Season 6. Pretty much what Cody said I agree so I won't repeat it basically haha They went overboard with the religious theme with Dexter and I thought they killed Brother Sam way too soon because their relationship was awesome. I found it really stupid that they brought the character of Louis, built him up as a villain to basically do really nothing with him afterward. I hated the Nebraska episode with Brian...Dexter did some stupid shit that were way out of characters and I though they blew Brian's cameo in my opinion. 5- Season 3. I still liked the relationship between Miguel and Dexter (Jimmy Smith is a great actor) but like the first time I watched it, I found a lot of episodes to be boring. Too many dinner scenes with them talking without much happening. Don't get me wrong, the season was still solid, but I didn't care at all for The skinner (don't even remember why he killed people lol) and Anton. Deb's relationship with Lundy was so great in Season 2 that this time around I didn't find her chemistry with Anton to be believable. 4- Season 7. I enjoyed this season so much this time around it's crazy lol It wasn't perfect, but man that I was on the edge of my seat all season. I was happy with the choice of not having a serial killer for a change and Isaak Sirko is my third favourite villain (Trinity is #1, Brian is #2) of all seasons. He was compelling, charming, ruthless, you understood his motivations, etc He was a great and fleshed out character. Their conversation at the bar is one my favourite of all seasons. I loved the fact that back then, they decided to show that Isaak was gay as a reveal, but in an organic way. Let's face it : There weren't many gay villains at that time that weren't stereotyped and Ray Stevenson did a magnificent job. I loved that LaGuerta, little by little, was able to connect Dexter as being the BHB because it was believable and made sense that she would try to clear Doakes name. Apart from the fact that Dexter is never, never home and Jamie seems to have no life whatsoever, season 7 is really underrated in my opinion. 3- Season 2. Loved the season overall. Not much to say at this point part that I loved Lila as a villain and the last episodes were tense. 2- Season 1. Great first season. It's another that I agree with what Cody said overall. Great introduction of characters, loved the reveal that Brian was Dexter's brother. Loved the scene where he decides to kill him instead of Deb...it was a dark, twisted but sad scene too. 1- Season 4. Everything has been said haha It was pretty much perfect. The ONLY thing that always bothered me is the reveal that Christine Hill was Trinity' daughter...like from which marriage? Where's her mother? What's the story here. I thought they didn't explain very well her backstory. Since Arthur was a family man and she wasn't that much older than his son, I kind of never pictured him as someone who would've just had a one night or something. I don't know...lol Like I said, it's pretty much the only thing. Oh, I hated that Lundy died too, but it was effective lol
As flawed as season 8 is, the difference in quality between that and New Blood is substantial. Pretty much every storyline in New Blood is forced... nothing comes together well. It manages to move painfully slow while barely building any of the characters. The pacing and story was perfect for the first two episodes, but it not only never picks up, but the Dexter/Harrison storyline remains identical for 5 episodes. Dexter knows Harrison has his darkness after the stabbing incident, but for writing purposes won't reveal his. The reveal should have happened at the end of the 4th or maybe 5th episode, which was necessary to build towards the finale, rather than cramming it in 1 episode, that ends up not making much sense. Anyways the biggest piece of evidence (to myself that is) that the 8th season is astronomically better than the 9th is, season 9 has no rewatchability. Watching the 9th season a second time around was not fun, whereas I've watched all the other seasons several times around and I still get enjoyment out of season 8 on rewatches. There is so little story going on in season 9, that the rewatch is painfully boring and I'm not even mentioning that it has more flaws than all of the other seasons combined.
Ok, worst to first. New blood: Everything about Dexter was thrown out. Being rusty is not the same as being sloppy. Dexter would not have been sloppy. He misses a drop of blood perhaps, or a hair follicle gets left behind. Then they expect us to believe that he is nothing more than a evil murderer desperately afraid of death. So he kills Logan to avoid potentially being put to death and he just likes killing, but he doesn't kill Harrison and instead tells him to kill me. Season 8: Just bad from start to finish. The best part was Dexter becoming a lumberjack. Season 6: There were some good things about it but it was overall subpar. Season 7: Good overall season. There were logical leaps, but mainly just nitpicks ony part. Season 5: This is a good season that suffers from having to follow up season 4. It was a drop in quality but how could it not be? Season 4 might be the best series season ever made. Season 3: Excellent season. Nothing bad to say about it that isn't looking deep to find flaws. Season 1: Fantastic season. I can't think of anything bad to say about it. Season 2: Just an all around amazing season. I agree, this really should have been the season finale. Season 4: What's there to say? Probably the best season series ever made.
Is it bad I prefer eighth season to new blood? Like you said.. everything about that finale ruined a lot of new blood. It would have been above eight season if not for the last bit of the finale of new blood 💀
The New Blood ending is way better on paper, but was the ONLY season that NEEDED 12 episodes, if they spread it out more, paced the final moments better, not wasting Angel and added more context to Harrisons decision then it would've been ok.
It's way better, idk why anyone says differently. The original ending was horrible. Of course, new blood isn't the ending now either, but still, much better.
A whole season of Dexter being on the run with a manhunt full of his old friends from miami metro and other characters we know would have been so insane I cannot comprehend why they didn't decide to go down that route.
Maybe they couldn't get the old cast to commit.
This is what season 8 of the original run shouldve been with Deb leading the manhunt. A Deb v Dexter final season would've been so good and emotional.
Why do that when you can have 10 episodes of Harrison and eskimo drama? Can't believe he came back for this script
Because that's a risky choice that would have taken good writers to pull off and they didn't have that. So for all later seasons they went a conservative route with a shitty story that doesn't commit to anything and that's why they were trash.
@@ARBLACKx it’s so obvious that they should’ve did this it’s frustrating
I appreciate your dedication. These reviews are amazing. I am STILL upset about the ending. I hope anyone involved in the production of New Blood finds your channel.
These popular TV shows should always get a few hardcore fans to be in the writers room. They always tend to come up with better and more coherent storylines. Seriously Showtime shouldve just picked a few UA-camrs like Cody, Sean chandler and Jeremy jahns to help the writers out. A good example is Cobra Kai which is a show that is actually written by a few hardcore fans.
😂😂😂 I hope so too
The scene in the bar with Dexter & Issac in season seven is the single greatest explanation of the character ever. It perfectly describes who he is and what his motivation is.
This might be an unpopular opinion but I think Season 5 is very underrated. I love the idea of Dexter saving someone and helping them get their revenge.
Yes except the first 5 episodes are so slow, they could have covered everything in 2 episodes that they covered in the first 5
I love season 5. It's my next favorite after 4 and 2
Love lumen I name my doggie after her
Yes, that is an unpopular opinion all right. Season 5 would be the worst season if it weren't for Season 8 and New Blood.
@@JakeKoenigSeason 5 is better than season 6 imo
Dexter has one of his monologue "thinking" moments and then Doakes says "Stop grining like a f**ing psycho and get back to work!" was one of my favorite scenes with Doakes.
Quinn will never ever be like doakes 😭
I love the first episode of S6, when Dexter goes to his high school reunion just to kill one of his classmates. Dark humor very reminiscent of the first season.
And they should've had Brother Sam in the show for at least the entire season.
Sorry , its hammer time 🤣

@@ajax3748 Michael C. Hall had some good moves in Six Feet Under, too. I think it’s impossible for him to pretend to be a bad dancer.
It still was better than season 5 dude, if you haven’t watched season 5 since the first time u did please do
@@nn-hx8oe ikr I don’t understand how anyone can say season 5 is a great season to me season 5 is where it dropped the ball for dexter they had this 4 great seasons all intense and interesting to watch and setup a crazy ending for season 4 with Rita being killed it was so suspicious it should have been what got Miami metro to start looking in on dexter and instead of it being a dragged out 8season show it could have been just 6 with season 5 being what happens after Rita died and why trinity would choose her when she wasn’t his normal ritual victim(kills in 4s) and everybody starts wondering where the hell dexter goes when he says he’s “working late” and they finally realize he’s the bay harbor butcher and season 6 is the full manhunt trying to track him down and eventually kill him with the electric chair. That would put it up there with breaking bad as one of the best shows ever.
Michael is a phenomenal actor, but he was clearly physically & mentally tired of Dexter’s character. The character is so emotionally, physically & psychologically charged, that I completely understand why he wanted to just get rid of him.
Not as tired as we thought apparently 😬
Well this aged extremely poorly now didn’t it? 😂 guess it’s actually kinda hard to pretend you know exactly what other people are thinking!
I love Season 5 as well. I wish they had kept Lumen as Dexter's love interest.
@@94Trish Yeah. She was such a good character
Lumen shouldve been kept on as Dexter's main love interest for the rest of the series. She shouldve become Harrison's stepmum.
I always felt bad for S5 whenever people say it should have ended after 4, 5 wasn't the best but I thought it was really good.
Yeah, Dexter stabbed Vogel's son very non-chalantly and Joey and Angel of the police department say "ok."
Joey agreed with Dexter doing it, angel understood. The scene where they confront him you can tell that because he killed Deb they wanted the guy to die, and because Dexter did make it look like self defense they supported him doing it
Loved your Dexter videos, your breakdowns have been the best out of anybody else I’ve seen.

@@nosidam1989 they did a bad job of making Harrison relatable and interesting
Deb hated Lila from the very beginning (of Dexter and Lila).
It's still awkward has hell knowing that the Storyline was placed on a real life divorced couple.

My brother got me into Dexter 2 months ago and I finished the first 8 seasons right when New Blood wrapped up. I’m loving all of the Dexter content your putting out and I pretty much agree with your feelings on the seasons
Season 4 is by far the best, Season 8 has to be the worst of the original series, but New Blood was worse than anything else.
They had the guts to kill Rita... shoulda done the same with Harrison.

I completely agree with your list, but I'd put season 1 before season 2.
I loved New Blood till the last episode ruined it.
That New Blood ending was one of the worst things I have ever seen in my life.
The dynamic changed after Rita's death. You can clearly see Dexter was in shock, and Harrison was still a baby. He actually looked human in season 5.
My ranking is

4 - SE03 (kind of a downgrade from SE02, but still entretained the hell out me with the whole "Dexter gets a friend" storyline)
5 - SE05 (a season that had alot to live up to after what many people would consider the most shocking main character death on a TV show, but they pulled it off nicely, giving a satisfying resolution to the whole drama of Rita's death, and indroducing a great new character, Lumen)
6 - SE07 (really can't understand why people think this season is so good, dispite having some nice moments, it just felt like a bad fan fic)
7 - SE09 (New Blood) (it felt even more superflous than the last 3 seasons of the show's original run, and an even dumber ending, i wont put it bellow seasons 6 and 8 because the first 3 episodes had some really nice moments)
8 - SE06 (don't know what the hell they were thinking LOL, only good ep. was the one with Brian)
9 - SE08 (absolute dogshit, every single episode, it made me wish they had cancelled the show after season 5)
You’d be crazy to think that pile of crap new blood was better than season 8 ☠️
@@derek5608As a season is better
Season 2 and 4 will always be my favorite
As bad as season eight of Dexter was…it wasn’t anywhere near as horrible as season eight of Game of Thrones.
I liked episode 9 with Dexter teaching Harrison the Code with the flashback to an unseen Miami kill of Dexter's and the like but imaginary Deb, Harrison spending most of his screentime being whiny and defensive whenever Dexter tried to talk to him, Angela seemingly having 2 personalities where one was a great cop who solved the Bay Harbour Butcher case and the other being an idiot who couldn't solve a murder case she'd been obsessed with for 25 years that her best friend was the first victim of and when she finally had Kurt, the killer himself dead to rights she believed a sob story he told and let him go, Audrey just existing to be Harrison's girlfriend and nothing else and the ending sucked.
glad to see season 5 get some love, probably would have put it above 3 if i kept your other entries below it the same.
Yep, season 5 is way better than season 3
Season 2: Lila "Pardon my tits". Drove his sister insane!
Season 7 is half absolutely outstanding, and half utter dogshit.
When Isaac leaves it goes downhill and only the flashback/finale is any good.
The only seasons I don't like are 6 and 8 , new blood was good at first but shitty ending , the rest were great seasons of Television

Putting New Blood below season 6 is just comically incorrect.
With that ending New Blood should be bellow season 8. Just horrible.
Now I regret watching New Blood, it's hard to enjoy the old episodes knowing Dexter's pathetic end/death.
New Blood is a better season than season eight, but I feel like the new series finale is worse than the original one.
Yeah, Jimmy Smits was terrific as Miguel Prado. Season 3 is one of my favorites, too.
8 is underrated imo 11/12 episodes were good for my standards
Man, why do all the creators on the internet simply have no opinion of their own and simply always reproduce what the critics say???? This obsession that the first 4 are good and the last 4 are horrible has simply stuck in people's heads as if it were the absolute truth and they don't even reflect on it. For example, Season 7 is better than Season 1 and MUCH BETTER than Season 3, which is the worst Season ever, apart from New Blood, which was even made by the beloved director who managed to make an ending worse than the Lumberjack
For me seasons 1 and 2 are effectively two parts of a single season and I have them ranked #1 edging out season 4
Broadly similar. My top 5 go as follows
Top. Season 2
2. Season 1
3. Season 3
4. Season 7
5. Season 4
Wait what? You put season 3 and 7 before season 4 with Trinity killer?
S2 - not bad season, but it should have happened so much later that Dexter is exposed
S5 - is great IMO.
Great analysis. However, Deb was in love with dexter, so her not bringing him down in season 8 wasn't overly surprising or the wrong script direction.
That “in love with Dexter” thing was so stupid😂😂and out of nowhere I’m still confused she was “in love with Dexter” she just had a terrible therapist
The video we have all been waiting for
Two of my favorite film critics!!
Season 8 wasn’t that bad, besides deb dying, what else is actually bad about it?
imagine if Harrison shot Dexter in the leg instead of killing him so Angela could capture him alive
The best scene in the whole series for me was when dexter head butted doakes.
Season 2 is my favorite, followed by season 1. Doakes and Musaka are the best too.
New blood is awful. I lived in Miami, hated all of it.
Your Dexter content is amazing
You must be a Patron. Only way to get a comment acknowledged
There is no fucking world in which New Blood is worse than season 6. NO FUCKING WORLD. It just dragged on and fucking on... Tableau this tableau that.
I think season 8 F tier, 6 and new blood tied in D tier, 7 C tier, 5 and 3 B tier, 2 A tier, 1 and 4 S tier
He also had cancer so he was just tired of playing any character at all
Honestly from worst to best I’d rank them 8, 9, 6, 3, 1, 5, 2, 7, 4
I found season 7 to be more intense than the Lundy investigation on the cop side, very interesting with the dynamic between Deb and Dexter, Isaak Sirko honestly rivaling Trinity in terms of how interesting he was as an antagonist albeit with less of a dynamic with Dexter.
New blood sucks. Ending was so unearned
I'm in the minority here but I have season 2 over 4
Can we please discuss how Harrison in New Blood didn’t look AT ALL like he did as a kid?? The kid was blonde, but the teen had brown hair that you could tell was natural and not dyed. I could never really see him as Harrison!
None of it had any continuity 😂
Yeah and i think it did not made sense Dexter 's son with Rita being so pale, blonde and bright blue eyed like those baby twin actors that played Harrison. Sure Rita was blonde but her eyes were not bright blue and Dexter also did not had blue eyes and blonde hair 😅
I'd replace 4 for 1, can't beat the og dexter
To me:
Season 4: Jon Lithgow
Season 1: Overall coherent and well paced
Season 6: Love the themes and the creativity
Season 2: Well executed and thought provoking
Season 9: Loved the relationships
Season 3: Liked the Family themes but was uninterested in the bad guys
Season 7: All over the place
Season 5: Disliked both the relationships and the bad guys
Season 8: Incoherent and washy motives
Why season 6 so high? Season 2 stomps it easy
@@grahamhill676 I really enjoy season 6. Its my most rewatched season.
New Blood is objectively terrible.
Seasons 6, 8 and New Blood ARE the only objectively BAD seasons in the show, season 5 had some really great episodes and season 7 was pretty watchable thanks to Isaac.
S6 was ass exept the last episode
I pretty much agree 100% with your list. The only thing I'd probably change is I'd put new blood above season 6. Loved New blood as I was watching it but with the ending and sitting back and thinking about it I've lost alot of that love for it already. Sucks that we got let down by an ending of such a good show twice!
Same for me

22:08 Dexter and Miguel was the only good "Dexter teaches someone the Code" storyline. Season 8's Zach Hamilton was a waste of time since the Brain Surgeon killed him about 1 episode later and Harrison went from wanting to learn it to suddenly wanting to kill Dexter for his out of character killing of Logan.

Hannah McKay should have been a real bad seductress rather than a love interest.

I know what scene you’re talking about with Masuka. I couldn’t stop laughing watching his hip thrusts and face shots 😂
New Bloods ending was a bit rushed but it wasnt all that bad. At least with him dying the show is DONE
I agree for the most part... A couple things I will say,
#1 I agree that the last 5 minutes of New Blood were really bad... It might be a worse ending than season 8.… But, the rest of the season was pretty entertaining... I personally rank it above season 6,7 and 8... But I understand where you are coming from
#2 Season 5 might actually be my favorite... Season 5 is just as good in my eyes as 1-4, it may even be a little better than the rest 🤷
#3 your top 2 seasons are probably most people's choices as top 2 also... And I think I was going through a bad break up at the time and was heart broken and it didn't seem like the best show for me to be watching at the time 😝
Dexter new blood sucks
I re-watched all seasons before New Blood and I was surprised how much my perspective changed from the first time I watched them. I'll probably be in the minority with my list but here it goes :
9- New Blood.
You really hate this new ending damn lol.
Probably the best season series ever made.
bro you are SPOT on ...
I actually the like season 7 but I hate season 8 and season 6
Is it bad I prefer eighth season to new blood? Like you said.. everything about that finale ruined a lot of new blood. It would have been above eight season if not for the last bit of the finale of new blood 💀
The New Blood ending is way better on paper, but was the ONLY season that NEEDED 12 episodes, if they spread it out more, paced the final moments better, not wasting Angel and added more context to Harrisons decision then it would've been ok.
Totally agree with everything He said about season 9. The biggest, the greatest character ever made to die in such a miserable way, Unforgivable.
My name is Dexter and I love this show so much
season 7 is actually great
The 'term' Deb used for Lila: "...gross, English, titty, vampire..." the funniest exchange between Deb and Dex.
After letting the new ending sit for a min I still enjoy this ending better than the original
It's way better, idk why anyone says differently. The original ending was horrible. Of course, new blood isn't the ending now either, but still, much better.
