  • Today I welcome @TheSmokinApe onto the channel to talk to us about the TinySA, available from R&L Electronics, and how to test for clean/dirty signals from specific radios. We will test a Baofeng radio and also one of my Yaesu Radios - maybe more.

    Thanks for doing this Jason; I've needed this step by step instruction on how to use the Tiny SA. I'll finally get mine out of the box and give it a go.

    Tiny SA is such an underrated device, they can do more than my old full size SA from a few decades ago. 🤣

    When you were first testing the FT5D for harmonics, it looked like you had the output from the radio connected to the output of the attenuator. I thought I read somewhere that that particular attenuator is unidirectional, with the input being on the side of the male SMA connector. Am I misunderstanding this? 73.

    Is the attenuator backwards? The one I have the SMA male is the input side.

      Yes, it is and that can damage the attenuator… On minute 20:04, @TheSmokinApe said correctly: the male SMA should be facing radio

    Would a ferrite ring help reduce spurious emissions if you put it on a Baofang HT antenna?

    So here’s my dilemma. I will be purchasing my first HF radio a 991a. I am currently studying for my General. Why do I “need” a tinysa? How will this serve me? The radio I have selected has a built in Antenna tuner. I am planning on an inverted V antenna. Is this a nice to have or a need to have. If a need to have why?

      An SA is a Spectrum Analyzer, not an Antenna Analyzer, although you can probably use it for that also. I haven't tried. But if you ever want to use another antenna, an Analyzer is good to have

    Is there a way to test cell phones for spurious emissions? I'd be willing to bet that phones would be at least as bad as Baofengs. Somebody prove me wrong.

      Cell phones are actually submitted to the FCC and tested BY THE FCC for compliance. Unlike your typical Chinese h/t, which has no certifications. (There are a few FCC approved models for specific purposes, but if you unlock them, all bets are off.)

      The mfg (eg Apple) have a test lab to do the tests. FCC doesn’t do them directly. The reports are sent to the FCC for them to issue the equipment authorization. They also do expensive SAR testing for RF exposure. Apple for example got dinged for the iPhone 12 in the EU, which allegedly exceeded their limits for RF exposure. They issued a firmware update which corrected it.
