Do you own a Podenco? What do you like the most about them?

I can trust the independance of my podenco rescue. As long as there is no danger in the form of traffic, she'll be fine. She is smart enough and her attitute (curious, friendly, brave but cautious) and lacking interest in strangers (excluding dogs and little children) make her a good companion for my life including my work.
She was born deaf, so i can even visit smaller outdoor concerts while she does her thing, which is hunting rats for the most part. Worst case scenarios so far were two angry but healthy rats that she brought me and some hours of searching your deaf podenco in his freshly dug up hole somewhere near.

I have a Podenco Oreto x hunter rescue he is also a tripod so he's a pod pod :) he is a wonderful character and been with us for four years, loving, gentle, playful, confident and funny, and his recall has improved a lot, lol. I'm still very aware of where we are when he's of the lead as he will chase and on one occasion caught a squirrel (it was to late for the squirrel :( it was departed swiftly) even with just the 3 legs, I but him back on the lead, told him although it was very clever we didn't eat squirrel, stuck it back up in a tree out of reach and continued on our walk, he hasn't done it again.
I'm expecting another Pod in a couple of weeks, we will be her foster family until she finds her forever home, sadly another x hunters dog. Thank you for sharing the plight of the Podenco, it's estimated at 60000 to 80000 are disposed of each year, this must stop ☹

We got a Podenco puppy from Spain. Her mom was a rescue dog and was a purebred Podenco Andaluz, that was abused for breeding purposes. At the time of rescue, she was pregnant with a litter and we were lucky to get her out of there. We brought her into a home of 3 cats and where afraid, that she wouldn't fit into here. Ironically two of our cats stood up to the rowdy puppy and she turned submissive and protective towards our 3 cats specifically, though other cats were never welcome. She's thickheaded, food-driven and squeaks like a true podenco a lot. She's starting to age no, making it towards her 14th year with us. She's calm inside, active outside. Essentially, we were lucky to find the perfect dog for this German family in the most Spanish dog in existence.

I have a small wirehaired podengo. We adopted her from a shelter and was told she was a terrier. She is the funnest, most playful and loving dog we have had. So full of energy and life. She has helped our other rescue who was abused come out of her shell. The two of them play all day and have bonded as sisters. I highly recommend this dog IF you are willing to support thier energy level and keep them engaged.

I got to know a podenco who lived where I rented my first room when coming to Spain. He was the most wonderful, kind-hearted dog I ever met in my life. And they are so beautiful. I can't understand why they are not valued more here in Spain..?!?
I am looking for a dog now and of course I will find a podenco from a shelter. It might not change the world but for that dog it will change his or her life.. I can't wait until I find my forever companion.

It's missing there the Portuguese insular Podengo, the "Podengo de Porto Santo", and the related Portuguese breed "Cão do Barrocal Algarvio".
Podengo is not proven to be a Spanish word since it's origins might be Portuguese. Some scholars defend that "Podengo" comes from the vulgar latin "Pota" (paw) + the Germanic sufix "-engo", forming Podengo/Podenco in Portugal and Spain, being found in archaic Portuguese one of the first uses of the word regarding the name of a particular dog breed, the "Podengo-de-água".
Podengo was also what, at least in Portugal, was called to every breed of hunting dogs. The Portuguese Pointer (Perdigueiro Português) was once called "Podengo-de-mostra" and the current "Portuguese Podengo" was once designated "Sabujo" (hound). Nowadays, "Sabujo Português" is still an alternative name to "Podengo Português".

She looks exactly like the short wire-haired dog you showed. She is very affectionate and wants to be with me always. She is super smart and easy to train. And she can run like the wind! They are fiercely protective. They get along with kids and other dogs, but once they sense danger or harm from others, they will guard and protect. We have a Podengo mix (maybe Belgian shepherd) which we found as a pup in Portugal, she is now about 3 years old.
She loves us and always wants to be with us, we trained her and she listens 9 out of 10 times, but towards strangers she is difficult. She will always bark at any stranger that comes to our place and if we are alone for awhile in a public places a strangers will also get barked at. Plus she sometimes goes to the stranger and gets behind them while backing, understandable, a lot of people find this intimidating.
Any tips to make her easier for strangers are welcome.

These dogs have natural tendencies to run and chase things, it is normal for them. Did he ran away on your walk or did he ran away from your yard? I would use long leash until you make sure he will understand the recall command perfectly. Podencos have natural tendencies to chase things and it is pretty hard to teach them the recall when they start the chase. Many people only let them off leash in fenced areas and they use very long leash on the rest of the walk.

I have a cirneco dell etna and love her dearly. I live in Spain. She is a rescue dog. She’s scared of people and loud noises. It’s difficult taking her out even to relieve herself. She trembles with anxiety. Once she is out she settles down. I use a small dog stroller to take her to the beach where there are fewer people. I’ve had her for almost 3 months. I hope she can get over this fear. She finds it hard to feel safe. Here in my apartment she is happy. Has anyone else this problem and what can I do for her?

    • @Rocadog
      @Rocadog  2 роки тому +2

You are great for rescuing! It is hard to help about the fear of strangers and loud noises, as we do not know the cause of these problems. I guess it must be something from her past, she was either not socialized at all or she had some very bad experience with people.
A dog's fear of strangers should be managed very carefully. If she is not agressive towards strangers, you can try to "push" her to interact with your friends for example. When i say push, i dont mean to literally push her, keep it friendly and relaxed. Just take her to see some of your friend and let her to meet them at her own pace. When she will see there is no danger from your friend, she should became friendly with him/her.. When she will overcome the fear with one person, try another. I do not know how big the fear is, but you can also try to go to some area with more people. You dont need to walk with her, just sit there and let her observe the people. When she will be ready to walk, than walk. Do not force your fearful dog to meet people or accept them, but give them opportunity to do it and give them opportunity to see, that other people are not a reason to be afraid.

    • @lynnalexander9674
