      yes i watched brower power in melb aust..he was one of a kind of real tough men...his daughters commented on yt that outside the ring,he was a gently compassionate man..he really enjoyed his wrestling status...back in those day aust wresting was tops..they brought in only the very best wrestlers including mark lewin who stayed a long time in the wrestling scene down under

      We loved this growing up in the 70s. It was hilarious when Mario Milano would have a few words in Italian for the Australian Italian community. Same with Spiros Orion for the Greek community. Jack Little, Ted Whitten commentators. Great on Saturday and Sundays at midday.

    These were the good old days back then, the whole family went on Sundays to church, came home to a roast, then watched the Wrestling on TV and then off to the footy.
    Love and miss those days.

      That is exactly what happened in hour home. Dad insisted on chatting at church so we kids raced home from Heathmont along the railway track to Bayswater in order to see as much of the show as possible. Then came the Sunday roast which had been cooking in the Sunbeam cooker while we all were at church.

    One of the greatest villains to come into a territory, work his way though all the jobbers, then destroy the mid carders. Then he would take on the champion of the territory and after several matches leave and return a year or two later. This was a much better and believable way of managing a wrestling territory.

      Only Milano was a major star in Australia. For some reason owner jim barnett allowed brower to no sell at a level he was never allowed to do in the u.s .
      In Australia whenever killer karl kox got someone in rhe brain buster that was it , easy pin and the guy needed 2 guys to help him out of the ring . When kox got brower in the brain buster he no sold it almost as bad as hogan no Selling vaders power bomb ,and got up and beat the crap out of kox . Yet the announcers ,trying to build up kox ,would always say there was an " upcoming meeting of the nwa board " to vote on " banning the brain buster " because it was so deadly! Yet they let brower no sell it and beat up kox after he gets up from it .
      In my opinon ,brower made king curtis ,mark lewin , arion , and kox all look weak . You dont make your heroes look weak . Milano was the hero of all Italian Australians and yet hes made to look like a jobber in this match

      @@iang8169 That seemed to be Barnett's method, make the heels look invincible and beat down the babyfaces. Apparently he was paranoid about letting any wrestler become too popular lest they get too much power and take the territory over, as had happened to him previously. Hence why no Australians got a real push from Barnett, just lots of jobbing. Seems the attitude extended to crowd favourites like Cox and Milano
      There is another Milano v Brouwer on UA-cam, post Barnett for comparison, by the way
      I started watching the wrestling pretty much straight after Barnett left, when I look at videos of the Barnett era it is very theatrical, swarms of villians in black tights stomping the good guys, some good wrestling in there sometimes but too often just hysterical pantomime, not all of which ages well

    • @iang8169

      @@openmodalguitar61yeah I saw that Match in the early 70s , in color and Brower had a Fro . Years after Barnett sold out to koloni . And Brower still won in a clean finish but Milano got a lot of offence where under Barnett, Milano looked like a scrub jobber against Brower. And Australia has a huge , huge , Italian population

    • @openmodalguitar61
      @openmodalguitar61 17 днів тому

      @@iang8169 From what I have gleaned from some forums Barnett ran the promotion in a very particular way. He had good (perhaps the best) contacts in the US, and he had a local underworld financier so could bankroll a lot of talent at top wages. He operated out of Kings Cross in the 60s and 70s, that sort of business environment. Once upon a time back in the US a wrestler got very popular and somehow took the territory from Barnett. Thereafter he was paranoid and in Australia kept potential local stars as mid-carders and jobbers and let them get squashed by the new heel in town direct from the US. This meant that he did not make money like he should have from guys like Ron Miller who always had what it took or Mario Milano who became a resident in Australia and had a huge following in the Italian community
      Barnett would have been aware of this, but he was paranoid about local talent getting too big that he couldn't control and anyway was rolling in money from his Kings Cross connections. The promotion would seem to have been financially very successful ... however when Whitlam and the ALP came to power in 1972 the taxman was unleashed on some who had been protected until then. You could always get away with quite a lot in NSW but tax is Federal. Barnett sold up and got out, and managed to avoid extradition, who knows what the accounts were actually like. This is from forums claiming sources from the industry at that time, make of it what you will. It explains the difference in the two BB v MM bouts, in the first Milan is treated like a disposable jobber, in the second he looks like a strong mid-carder/fringe headliner getting some good moves in on the top heel before selling the beating building up to the main event. All very professional. You can imagine Milano doing a run in during the main event and getting some revenge in front of his many fans
      Kolony and then Miller and O'Dea seem to have run the promotion really well after that, especially not having the money behind them that Barnett had. It's not just nostalgia, watching the 1974-78 stuff it is almost always really good and sometimes great, like Miller v Brannigan. If it wasn't for Kerry Packer's breakaway cricket competition taking the TV slot it would have kept going strong for some time, although perhaps best it went out still in top form and running well, no decline or decay
      Ron Miller and Larry O'Dea had to go to the US in 1972 to get the push they couldn't get in Australia. They were the Florida tag team champions, then came home coinciding with Barnett's departure. There would be some interesting tales from that era I am sure
