I’m a Kiwi so I gravitated to this one instantly. I’m a big fan of the channel, this one is right up there with some of the grittiest, compelling and insightful of a life far from ordinary being lived by a fellow kiwi. Thanks for sharing Barrie, keep smashing the great content Dodge! Ngā mihi 💪🙏
Brilliant interview! Barrie is a legend. Please interview Willie Apiata VC, NZ-SAS . As a corporal in the NZ SAS he became a recipient of the Victoria Cross for New Zealand for bravery under fire during the War in Afghanistan in 2004, in which he carried a gravely wounded comrade across a battlefield, under fire, to safety.
Why is it the Navy Medic who ran and tended the wounded under extreme fire couldn't get it because she was a she? Carrying full pack and her not higher than a grasshopper.
She got the Military Cross. Katie Nesbit aged 18 at the time.
willie served in the same troop as my uncle dave
From a Detective working in Hamilton for over 30 years nice to hear someone tell the truth about NZ and the culture for once.
Bring back the BenSmart & Olivia case. Watch the 3 part series from Maritime Research.

It's kinda crazy that David Seymour is pushing Meth made products back on the shelves.
i was born in iraq, i left to new zealand when i was 3. proud kiwi ..... i love youre podcast this one hits different, much respect to you Barrie Rice, thank you for another good one Woodall
Glad you enjoyed Martin 💎
Thank you and so glad you are in NZ now
So pleased you are here in New Zealand my fellow Kiwi and you have been given a chance at a better life, it’s sad that a better life could not have been possible in Iraq. But you are safe and happy and I am so happy for you x
As Churchill said...
"We sleep safely at night because rough men stand ready to visit violence on those who would harm us."
Sadly Churchill was a coward , a racist and said disabled ppl should be left to die so personally I think it’s an insult that he gets even mentioned alongside brave men like this guy.
Churchill lied to Australia and New Zealand, we were attacked and had no back up to what Winston promised us , we had to bring our troops home even though Churchill was furious, we both then leaned on the US and they leaned on us for a defense of the Pacific.
George Orwell (not Churchill)
@anderssongibbs9013 yes, but used by Churchill I believe. Anyway I think its a poignant phrase whatever the case
Hi Barrie.
Like to help you survive the next 15 year. ( I'm from a mil family also, age 77).
Absolute quality that was. Honest, humble, and hard as nails. All the best to the pair of you. ❤
I was in Iraq as a PSD operator the same time as Barrie. We met up in Basrah Air Station when I was with Cochise and he was with Blackwater, back in 2005. Nice bloke.
Shark team?
we might be swimming in the same pool bro
Proud Kiwi here...thankyou Barrie for your service to our great country!
Barrie Rice . Please come back to NZ and run for Prime Minister . I’m a 5th generation pakeha , and I would vote for you in a heartbeat . Power to you brother . God bless
wuld b gr8 on the nz1st card
Bazza, Integrity.
Not the Pakeha 😂 all love though
Jabcinda made a mess be hard to do worse ❤
I wanna see Barrie come back to Treasure Island. 😊
You got the very best out of Baz Dodge …a very tough man with so many layers of life which we were lucky to get a small insight into ..
The world needs men like Baz ..
Wow that was an amazing interview. , I had a few tears in my eyes on his brutal raw honesty. Nice work to both of you!!
Glad you enjoyed it Jeff 💪🏼
This was brilliant but also sad. We really don’t know how blessed we are do we. This fits honest was so touching. A true hero imo. As always dodge , you just seem to be so in tune with your guests and know when to ask and when to just let them talk .
This one really was emotional . Something has to happen world over to help veterans it’s ridiculous how badly they get treated
Many of us would love to meet up with you again, Baz. You gave us powerful insights we have never forgotten. A Brilliant man, and definitely someone you never forget.
Great interview. Pulled at the heart strings a couple of times listening to Baz talk about his life. We get to live the lives that we do in the west because of men like this.
Another 🥝 Kiwi. A true respect for this man, it’s very courageous to be so honest vulnerable in telling his story - this is Mana ❤ respect.
Thank you Barrie for shining the light on the problems back home in Aotearoa ❤
One of the best podcast episodes I've seen, especially with a military guest. As an Aussie I love seeing and learning more about our NZ neighbours.
The ANZAC spirit my brother Aussie. Best to you from Auckland, NZ
The Judicial system is what it is bro, all governments follow it. We don't have industry in Aotearoa bro, when I grew up in a small kiwi town, everyone had a trade, boilermakers, train drivers, cloth cutters etc etc ... and then our National government (later followed by the other party) got into the Globalization buzz and sent all our industry overseas, and then governments privatized everything and got rid of apprenticeships. All we need is industry, manufacturing and trained by the likes of Hoki and Cabbage or apprenticeships, give our people pride and dignity in themselves and the work they do. Good one Barry
Everything Barrie about says about NZ is correct. Great podcast
Bullcrap
@@michaelmarama-de4gx oh ok Cindy 🙄

Great interview Dodge. Kiwi SAS very highly rated by the British and Aussie military.
Hes talking about the new Zealand he left 30 years ago... He'd be disgusted at the state of our country now....😊
Great show...... been to New Zealand and this guy is a real Kiwi, a very honest interview..... and you can see that he lives and breathes the regiment and his comrades, the Uk and his own country are very lucky that these men are on our side, the way he explains the mis-trust of government for the war in Iraq, I believe we were all sold down the river, and Blair and Bush should be held to account..... shameful!
It's still going on right now. Ukraine, Middle East, etc etc.
They lied, they said there were weapons of mass destruction and there wasnt, they lied........
Donald J Trump
What a podcast Dodge smashed it again. Barrie your a legend mate
What an awesome interview. Would be a great mentor for youth in NZ, tell them how it is. Thanks Barrie for your honesty.
Your doing a great job with these podcasts lately dodge... I love the mix between the military and business side you put out. Weirdly, I don't even really care about the military or running a business but find the podcasts fascinating. I listen to every one.
Glad you’re enjoying Blake ⭐️
I am very much appreciative for this interview. This is what I needed so thank you thank you and thank you ❤ much love and respect ❤❤❤
Amazing Interview with Barrie, one of our best Kiwi's.
I'm a kiwi and I loved this interview. I have read a lot of books and watched a lot of these interviews. What an amazing humble good guy it seems. Run for PM of NZ :)
Great interview with someone whos not afraid to speak the truth. Good on you Baz
Thank you
Met a few SAS when i was in the nz army. Beast men in the country and very humble
Brothers in arms,,
What a very interesting show with Baz. I was glued to the tv listening and have gone out and brought his book. Awesome!
Staunch with dignity, good honest talk.
Been decades since I heard Geoff Todds name, what a blast from the past.
G'day from a former 1R
Remember Baz from Treasure Island and the Doco Shadow Company, in his black Kevlar helmet behind a GPMG whilst working for Blackwater.
Another fascinating interview, thank you both.
I cant say how much i enjoyed listening to a good kiwi man who speaks the truth and i can respect! This is the rolemodel our young people need and how i like to think of New Zealand men should aim to be! Respect! Especially to our Maori country men in the armed forces. Enjoyed litening to this interview more than anything i have watched in this mad woke country in a long time.
100% Many of our Maori men pretty much are unsung heroes and I mean those who work on the roads, forests, truckers, power lines, freezing workers, military, as well as in white collar jobs also - you name it. Hard working men. It's the gang guys that sadly give Maori a bad rap. I am part Maori and I always have much respect for my brothers.
Fascinating journey...so refreshing to hear the honesty. Thank you
That's a great guest. Interesting career and life story
I found this very insightful. Having known and met some of these kiwi guys, never really understanding the full story of what they have seen and been through. Tough and humble for sure
Barrie, I served in NZ defence like you and worked along side some of your fellow team members in Bosnia (you would know who those characters were). What an emotional interview mate. Thank you so much for sharing. My close mates also ex NZ defence almost ended up on the same circuit you did in Iraq….glad they didn’t end up going. I have heard of some others who did and as you describe, they didint cope to well on returning. It was the lire of the money and I get that. Looking forward to reading about your experiences. Chur bro
Thank you bro
What a powerful episode. Dodge you are a superb interviewer allowing your subject the space, yet still guiding the narrative. I've just ordered Baz's book. Best Podcasts around mate.
Thanks Norman 🙏
Dodge is one of the best for sure
A huge mark of the calibre of these two guys when they take the time to read and comment. Respect...
Been hanging out for a Nzsas guest to be on. Awesome. See if you can get willie Apiata on aswel dodge
Leave with me mate 🇳🇿💪🏼
@@DodgeWoodall Sir Willie Apiata VC btw Dodge... Great show thanks, kia kaha.
@@DodgeWoodall Highly doubt you would get Willie & if he did he would not speak one word about the SAS ,,he was gutted devastated he was outed .Very very usually for any kiwi sas ex sas to ever speak one word about it ,i used to work with one he was a best mate,, RIP Andy,, my drinking buddy i hooked him up with woman he was like a brother & could never get one word from him apart from all i can tell you is i used to jump out of aeroplanes very different from the British sas .That guy loves money he said the word 20 times he has wrote a book for cash he has sold out .Honestly i doubt Willie would even give that guy the time of day .If you have seen the doco on Willie you would how they roll here the sas had to force Willie to speak he was refusing to & everytime he was asked a question he looked at his commander who was sitting next to him & the commander answered it .Willie don't talk sas & don't talk on one thing he has done with them or in conflict only thing Willie is going to tell you is your mother dresses you funny & to lay off the sun bed bro you are gonna get skin cancer .
@@jonsmith6982 Youre speaking out of your arse. How many of these ex special forces have written books or is it just this guy youve got a problem with.Another Maori Ex SAS Joe Hotai,go and blast his podcast. If youve been alive for awhile youd realize its pretty well out in the open now, their training and tours of duty.I didnt see this guy spouting about who he killed or anything like that or hiding the fact that in his line of work he chose he got paid.Theres an article by an ex navy seal on members trying to pulldown the likes of Jocko and Goggins,he said guys theres a life other than in the army, make the most of your skills in the outside world.
@@jonsmith6982you do realise Willie Apiata has a book as well don’t you?
Also if you actually listen to what Barry says here, there is very little said about the SAS outside of the training, and when speaking about Iraq etc, he is speaking from a private citizen’s point of view as he was there working for a private company.
Amazing story, thanks for the honesty. So much great advice.
Like hitting the throat, yep for sure... Very good podcast.
Top episode, great to see a Kiwi perspective on your show Dodge. Baz, well done, I will definitely be getting my hands on your book.
Drink had me on a slippery path, not quite to the same extent as Barrie, but it certainly had it's grip on me. It took a jarring incident to release me from it's grip and change my life course. That was nearly 11 years ago now and am truly grateful alcohol is no longer a part of my life. What he said really resonated. Another fantastic conversation.....another book to add to the list 😅
So glad you tackled it and came out on top. Enjoy the book 👍
Humility personified.
Barrie is one the most humble humans I’ve ever met 💎
I enjoyed watching this. Brutually honest account from a warrior talking about every facet of life.
Total Bad Ass but as most Kiwi's I've had the absolute privilege of working with over the years very very understated, looks & sounds like a History Teacher 😂
Seems like a true "Pilgrim" though :0]
"We are the Pilgrims, master: we shall go Always a little further: it may be beyond that last blue mountain barred with snow, across that angry or that glimmering sea
Cheers brother WDW
Another fantastic interview Dodge.total respect to him and his family I wish him all the best he's a legend 💗 x
Very open. Very revealing. Thanks for this!
I worked with Barrie a few times, he’s an absolutely top bloke!
Im a Kiwi watching Barrie and yourself Dodge. My background is from the UK military and I have lived my life away from NZ which I dearly love, but compared to where I currently live with a certain Arch enemy just over the fence the thought of going back to such a shit state in my own country leaves me thinking that it better overseas
You live in Westminster and you’re talking about the city of London or Buckingham palace ?
Another great podcast Dodge, I loved his honesty with regards the politicians & Iraq.
Dodge, Barrie nailed it team, well done.. Nails hit squarely. Barrie ya book is a good read bud.
Cheers mate
Another great interview from another candid yet truly amazing guy. Keep up the good work ;0)

Kia kaha bro
I remember Barry from Treasure Island!! Legend, great book too “we were black water”.
All the best Baz!
Thank you, so humbling with the insight. What governments who love having people killed regardless. Of excuses that are used. And we sit on our armchair judging with our so-called know it all. New Zealand Aotearoa.
Amazing work geezer!! Always great content, makes me kinda proud of being a brit haha
Another great interview Dodge your channel gets better every week 👏
Much appreciated Rich 💎
Thank you for sharing your story, chur KIWI Bloke, New Zealand
man, cheers for sharing your story, that was awesome,
Speaking as a professional goat culler magnetic bearings are always less than grid bearings around 23 degrees.
This was amazing. Makes me wonder if a mandatory military service is required for NZ. Where all Men, and women, from the age of 18 - 30 must do 2 years. Teach em discipline, respect and work ethic. Food for thought #GodDefendNZ 🇳🇿
Smashing it dodge old mate 👌 👍
anther great podcast, outstanding. revealing untold stories too quickly forgotten
Great episode Dodge!
This guy has a brain in his head and it’s good to see in New Zealands current political climate.
I remember calling in to his place for a coffee at the Viaduct in Auckland with my mate who had been on one of his CQB courses. He was there with another bloke who was ex SAS and they were getting ready to piss off overseas for work. Was a bloody interesting fulla to talk to that's for sure.
The other guys name was Jonathan
Thank you gent’s
Really enjoyed this one
Great interview 🔥
The NZ SAS are top class
Amazing - thank you 💜💜
We used to get the selection course from being face down in the back of a Unimog blindfold them and stress positions them for 24 hrs
Fantastic bloke, and grateful he was willing to share the inner demons working in these environments and also the struggle with alcohol abuse. Great podcast, mate.
Take a shot every time the host asks "what were your movements?" 😂
Kiwi humour doesn’t dull with age 😂 jokes come out of left field so often 😂 Salute Matua 🫡
