  • What started out as an ordinary pregnancy and whelping event for Sweet Sage Stone the Airedale (of Fort Erie, Canada) turned seriously wrong. But thanks to the skills of Dr. Fav and vet tech assistant Carol of Dunnville Veterinary Hospital, Sage came through fine with an emergency c-section resulting in eight healthy pups (six boys, two girls).
AireMother Ferris Beck-Stone of Fairstone Kennels was calm and efficient throughout the assessment process, working hand in hand with the online reproductive service WhelpWise out of Colorado.
    Love you, Sage!

Excuse me, please, what are the indications for the operation?

What is not seen was the dialogue between my wife and the online service in Colorado which was monitoring Sage (we live in Canada). They detected that at least one of the puppies had a heart rate that was dropping - and dropping fast. That put not only the individual pup in danger, but all the others as well - and mother Sage too. They recommended going immediately to a vet for emergency surgery. We did so - and it was the 100% correct decision. If we had gotten there even a short time later the outcome would have been far different. The placenta was separating from the pup early and Sage's uterus was starting to rupture from the excessive labouring/contractions.
