In Russian fairytales, where you can see three brothers, the youngest one is always a fool and probably lazy. Its like a basic characteristic of a main protagonist. Sooo i think "young foolish boy" is the right translation. (Sorry for my english?)
Regarding the glowing feather: It's supposed to bring bad luck and the humpbacked horse is kinda angry that Ivan takes it. I guess it's a common storytelling device in Russian fairy tales that the hero vainly takes a fire bird's feather, ignoring that it's a sacrilege to do so, bringing them bad luck and bringing the conflict that drives the story.
Coming from the perspective of someone who has and rides horses these horse animations are brilliant! I applaud them for recreating and exaggerating the beauty and grace of horses!
The Humpbacked Horse was one of my favorite movies when I was a kid. I still cannot believe American reviewers would make an analysis of it. Thank you for making me relive my childhood. I actually teared up a little.
I'm so glad you guys got to watch the original! This poor movie got entirely RE-ANIMATED at one point due to the original footage being in bad shape and them not having the tech to remaster it at the time.
It's nice you guys were able to review a good movie this time. But I still love your little characters disgusted expressions for when you look at bad ones.😝
I LOVE the humpbacked horse! It was one of the movies I grew up with! However one thing I noticed is that the animation is different from the movie version that I have. The one I own has a tad better animation and is a couple of minutes longer, so I wonder that they might have reanimated the whole movie. @-@ The characters, story and scenes are the same just another animation. I think I will try to do some research if they redid the movie and why.
Apparently the film was redone (and slightly extended) by someone named Ivan Ivanov-Vano in 1975, because the original film was damaged and the technology that would restore it did not exist then. That must be the version you watched.
This studio us so good. And the adaptarion if my favoty story "The snow queen is a master piece 😍...not like that thing they call frozen 😧. I have a lot of favorites of this studio
Aww I'm so happy that you guys made an episode about a Russian film! I grew up on those movies, and loved your ideas/interpretations of the movie. Smiled throughout the entire video. :D
I remember as a kid having a copy of “the magic pony” (the 1977 version) haven’t seen it in eons but then randomly remember, manage to find the version I watched, then fell down the rabbit hole of learning about the “original” from 1947... awesome find! Thank you!
Fun fact: Osamu Tezuka took inspiration from this movie twice. One time for his manga series The Phoenix; the other time for his anime series Aoi Blink. Tezuka from what I remember reading loved the movie due to its themes? I don't remember exactly.
I watched these as a kid in the 1950s in LA. This and other fairy tales like Baba Yaga and the Tiny Oxen. They were serialized in short episodes and were narrated but I remember seeing the scenes, like the pretty horses, the Tsar being boiled alive, etc. I had the story book, too, with beautiful Russian illustrations. It is a traditional story. The boy is known as Little Fool Ivan.
I've been searching for this movie for years!! I used to watch it all the time at my grandpa's house when I was little, but years later I couldn't remember the name of it or enough details to find it online.
The 70s version is one of my all time childhood favorites but I never told my friends because I couldn't let anyone know that I like a movie called The Magic Pony. ( It was the late 80s. It was a different time.)
This movie was a big part of my childhood. I have no idea how that came to happen lol well I had the American version in with all these other stories on the movie
Funnily enough I saw this as a wee one from a Blockbuster and had no idea what it was later and wanted to find it. Finally did this year but man if I hadn't this would've been a great shock xD
If someone doesn't know the story of dumbo and they just here the title. That would be very confusing. Who knows what dumbo's called in other countries.
This was an enjoyable movie. It has its flaws, and the animation isn't quite as impressive as "The Lost Letter", but in the end, I'd say I like it a little more than the other Russian movie so far.

Your English is better then some people who speak English as a first language
Ok but did he ever take the blanket off to check if or not that was just a cool saddle?
THAT’S WHAT I WONDERED TOO. But the saddle blanket does come off for a scene and you do actually see the horses humps.
...
Hmmm phrasing...
Yes. Yes he did

It's an abomination, but it's a _cute_ abomination
Loved this, by the way! Thanks for doing this; it's really interesting! :)

You can watch it here on youtube
Another very cool film! Thanks again for all the hard work you guys are putting into this

Haha the subtitles were correct but in the film they really called the young boy more of an "idiot" rather than a "fool"

Yes! This is correct! It was actually redo by the same director you mentioned there!

Wasn't there another inspiration by Tezuka. I think it was an adaptation of "Faust," but the devil turns into a big-ear dog.
Austin Voelker I think that was an unfinished manga Of his called neo Faust but I think he did a previous adaptation of Faust but I can’t remember.
@@Raggedyfink Yes, that other one is the one I'm talking about. The earlier one from the 50's.
I was gonna say, those peacocks looked very familiar to his The Phoenix design, this makes sense.

I feel like such a nerd but every time y'all review a Russian animation, I get all giddy.
Dude, we are loving the Russian films so far, so I’m glad you’re enjoying it too!
I’m quite sure that the princess is german yes, and my memory might fail me, but I seem to recall that she sings in german.

Amelia Anderson Or Tangled. Try explaining Tangled to a country where Rapunzel isn't a well-known fairy tale.
I lost it at "It's a Donkey Camel Pony" anyone else lost it at that part?
Yay! So cool i love Animation Pilgrimage!
Super
i fucking loved this film as a child ^^
I like the 1977 version the most.
It's a donkey camel pony
How does one acquire a copy?
Watch Ice Queen (USSR) if ya can. Please. It's amazing, it's worth a shot
