- Outtakes from the Documentary "Vladimir Horowitz: The Last Romantic" by the Maysles brothers.
Vladimir Horowitz plays:
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart: Piano Sonata No. 11, K. 331 (Alla Turca: Allegretto "Turkish Rondo")
Sergei Rachmaninoff: Polka de W. R.
Bizet-Horowitz: Carmen Variations
Frederic Chopin: Etude Op. 10. No. 5 "Black Key Etude"
Moritz Moszkowski: Etude in F Major
Franz Liszt: Années de Pélerinage (Au Bord d'une Source)
Horowitz: "Listen, you want the Moskowsky maybe?"
Wanda: "No"
Director: "No"
Horowitz: *plays it anyways* .... :)
Cracked me up lol
Jajaaa
They meant yes by that
@@primusjulianbugar262 cracked me up so hard as well. i love his somewhat childish behavior
Old my beer... XD
His smile at the end touches me even more than the wonderful piece of Liszt. This is the happy and at the same time melancholic smile of a wise man who knows that he is close to the end of a long, fulfilling journey... I feel very touched. And I deeply admire this man.
Yes this is wonderful and you are so right
@@jfpary7336 Thank you very much, Jf Pary. I am happy to see that someone shares my sentiment.
So true. He was “the only one”.
his playing is superb! I didn't realize he suffered bouts of Depression, off and on took time off from performing and recording, underwent Psych for his Sexual Orientation so very sad... Who really cares...I feel bad if he was Gay, and never got to live his Truth. He gave so much to us through his performances
@@timothyj1966 As far as I know (read), he got "to live his truth" partially. If you listen at his st. torn playing you hear that he had to go through some "dark hours" in his life.
The child in this old Horowitz is very inspiring!
Yes!! No doubt! The depth of his playing was mature- extraordinary. A keeper video for ever.
The way Horowitz plays those last runs in the Moszkowski etude very softly and fast is just astounding!!
Controlled emotions and virtuosity at all times. This is what made Horowitz one of the world's greatest pianist!
my favorite pianist ever
Me too^^
ME too....
Man, I wish I had a steinway in my living room.
You have one now?
Do you have one now?
Yeah would be interesting to know. A lot can change in 9 years.
Me too
I wish I had a horowitz in my living room.
The cellist Gregor Piatigorsky, who worked a lot with Horowitz, once said, that the highlights of their joint concerts always came when Horowitz could play the extra tasks. Then the concert really got going with these many small, technically brillant miniatures, and the audience demanded more and more encores, which Horowitz played happily. It was like the box of pralines after a sumptuous feast, where nobody could and would stop.
It's not Gregor, it's Григорий
What a delightful smile at the end of "Au Bord d'une Source" by Liszt!
+mstalcup yes...one of the most beautiful happy smiles ever...his hypnotic loving music sends him to heaven...there he was in the good company of muses...i wished he played more pieces like that...and just to himself for his own pleasure...cause his genius was then even greater....he loves liszt...me too...and him...muse and angel
+mstalcup I have always loved that shot. So glad they captured it. It was really Horowitz's inner soul.
The amount of music that this virtuoso had committed to memory was phenomenal.
Such a touching ending, you can tell how much he loves and identifies with the music he plays! I find range of tonal colour that Horowitz achieves astonishing - every single note has clearly been carefully considered and it results in a real sense of communication in every single phrase. Magical playing...
Yes! In an interview, he was asked how he was able to do what he does. He replied, "I love every single note."
Several pianists & I went to a live concert he gave in Philly in the late '70's and we were all absolutely shocked at how he made each piece sound like it was being played on a different piano. We could have sworn they had swapped the piano out for each piece if we hadn't been right there looking at him.
Sometimes I got the impression he would play some of the little "ditties" to annoy Wanda a little. She seemed to want him to be more serious at least in front of the camera. Just my impression😁
She’s constantly embarrassed by him
She's a miserable old bag
I think he needed her to keep him in check - as I’ve said elsewhere, he was like a very old naughty child.
Brilliant Chopin, Moszkowski, etc. Interesting how his pinky-finger curls up and hides away when not in use. Great film.
Oh, people used to say his pinky is curled up like a snake ready to strike!!!!
Oh my... his technique seems so effortless, it looks so easy for him, as if he is playing Twinkle Little Stars.
seeing this old man's face light up while playing his piano just made my day
He's ageless.
Find somebody who looks at you the way Horowitz looks at the camera at 9:47
The position and form of Horowitz hand's are perfect!
One is at a loss for superlatives when listening to and watching this genius.
Many great pianists...only one HOROWITZ
the second he started speaking i couldn't stop smiling. he's such an inspiration
I always want to cry at the end. This is magic caught on film.
Decades ago I almost cried when I heard about the deaths of two great 20th century pianist : Gould and Horowitz.
Gould e Horowitz possedevano una tecnica atipica riuscendo a dare un 'impronta personale a quello che suonavano
Greatest pianist that ever lived. Nobody else evens comes close.
what about me?
He may not be perfect to everyone’s liking but he will be special forever.
Sviatoslav Richter overcame him. Period.
Liszt is the father of Extreme pianism. Nobody is better than liszt.
@@linuseike6041 oh alright, and have you heard him?
the ending made me tear up
:'-(
Rest in great peace Horowitz.
This is highly entertaining, never mind impressing. Those fingers playing Chopin and the Moszkowski piece are nearly 82 years old. Thank you very much for posting this. May any old legend be available for online viewing on UA-cam. I like to think that Horowitz would not mind me watching him for free here today.
I love Horowitz, the amount of adoration and respect he has for music is beautiful.
such people like horowitz deserve so much more.. I'm one of many many people he touched with his sensitive feeling and personality.. RIP maestro, you have give us so much..
Every time I watch this video I am more and more overwhelmed by the artistic scope and the magnitude of the musical virtuosity and genius of this great pianist. Unlike many of the other greats, HOROWTIZ seems to be much more in direct, almost organic connection with the instrument in the sense that it does not seem to matter what key he is playing in, how many sharps or flats or complicated fingering and phrasing...it all just goes a s smoothly and as naturally as if they were an extension of each other.
Even more impressive to me is the size of his repertoire and the pieces he has memorized and which he can play at will, jumping in at any point of the composition. He really does know them all, as he says " the UPS AND DOWNS "...
Finally, and not least important is the sheer PHYSICAL dimension of these performances.
Here is a man who is so frail and weak looking and who can barley speak, let alone walk and yet when he sits down and plays these incredibly difficult compositions for hours and hours without getting exhausted and he seems to be as powerful as any young pianist and his ENDURANCE is incredible....IT'S ALL HARD TO UNDERSTAND
I've watched this so many times, when looking for inspiration in my playing. I don't find it here as I know I will never be able to play a bar like he does. In reality, he's probably the greatest pianist that ever lived, and his best friend; the greatest composer.
C'est un privilège que d'écouter jouer cet homme !
Un avant-goût de Paradis.
I absolutely loved the "Au Bord d'une Source"! Shimmering, effortless beauty. I was at a recital of Radu Lupu and Murray Perahia in 1986. At intermission as I made my way up the aisle to the lobby, I looked down and there sat Wanda Toscanini Horowitz in a prime aisle seat. Their playing was magical and so was the brief eye contact with Mrs. Horowitz. I had to wonder where the maestro was, but his spirit was there for me.
to play that piece that way you need his mastery coupled with his musical maturity.. It's a fantastic recording
Personal Timestamps:
3:38 Moszkowski maybe?
5:07 after dinner mint
9:45 end of Au Bord d'une Source
A great man. That smile at the end, he was happy.
What a treat to see him here! Even at his age, his fingers danced on the piano like an absolute god of music! Wonderful! Thank you for sharing this!
no words can describe.. heart touching performance of au bord d´une source..
It’s true, dear friend! no words can describe
Just . . . beautiful! One cannot but pause and remember the life's work of dedication, love of music, and the billions of lives music touch through an individual as Vladimir Horowitz. Our mist appears for each one of us for a moment in time . . . and then is gone. This is an example about life, that should teach all us to make the most of the resources with which we have been blessed -- then give from ourselves the very best we have to offer, before there is no more time left to give, and our stay on earth is gone . . . .
HAHAHAHHA loved the Moszkowski bit
He, more than any other pianist, somehow reaches your innermost soul and captivates it while he plays
Horowitz had everything a musician needs: courage
There are just no superlatives which are adequate to describe HOROWITZ, the greatest pianist of all time
I have listened to and compared the performances of all the " great " pianists for whom there are recordings or videos and they are all wonderful because anyone who can get to the level of performing these piano busters has to be a phenomenal virtuoso but none has the COMPLETE package that HOROWITZ has.
My favorite pianist and interpreter in all classical music. That smile at the end ❤
I miss him, and I miss those days. I miss the virtuosos of that era, and I miss their free interpretation and brilliant creativity. Like this, I sometimes miss the same times when I was not born.
Horowitz’s kindness and humor are terribly heartfelt . His human quality and genius create something “ je ne sais pas quoi,” in his interpretations.
Yuja Wang is like no other.
His dexterity at that age was astounding.
The clarity but richness of the Mozart is absolutely incredible
No matter how old he gets, he's still the best.
Can you imagine living as his neighbour ? .......... I will do anything just to be there
I had the same dream.
I actually know an excellent classical concert level pianist (I mean not saying he's as good as this guy) but his neighbours HATE him practicing
@@GingerJoberton They should try living next to a beginner trumpet player or wannabe violinist.
oh what a character! i love him haha. but when he smiles at the end of the beautiful liszt... you know that he is truly in love with music.
Senza tante parole è il più BRAVO!!
È Stato!
E lo sarà sempre!
master of bring colour to a piece the end is amazing hes such a cute wee man!
Gracias por tu arte Vladimir Horowitz Dios te guarde y tenga en su gloria por siempre
Absolute genius I never get bored of listening to the master he was the shred master!
I have heard a lot of his Scarlatti and Chopin and a lot of Liszt and wonder why his 'Au Bord d'une Source' performance here has not received as much acclaim.
It is the most haunting performance ever.
Maravilha, pianista da maior envergadura artistica que ja existiu, que bom que passou por aqui, 16-12-2018-Domingo, as 13:49hs.-Laspiano
lisztian impressionism...sublimely played
This is the most wholesome thing on yt
incredible pianist, magic and a real poet!Thank You Maestro for the hours I spend with Your records…a real joy🙏
You brilliant, brilliant man!!!
What a beautiful man...
Mints... After dinner mints...
Oh, you can tell he really loved Au bord d'une source by his smile at the end. I have his recording from 1947 when he could really play it. I highly recommend it. I am glad to see this. Thank you!
The Liszt Etude was extraordinary. You have just seen an up and personal look at the great man. How great is that?
Imagine seeing Beethoven, Chopin, Liszt, etc.? Alive in video. Fabulous!
It’s not an Etude by Liszt. It’s from his Years of pilgrimage
@@charliegold3227 Of course, you are right.
Quel joli sourire pour terminer . La beauté d'un génie pour l'éternité.
So touching especially the end shoot thank you your music
we are in an "unknown world" with this music ,composers, and its performers,...wishing to stay with them forever ...
Horowitz Piano-Stil ist einmalig, er bringt das Klavier, ein Hammer-Instrument, zum Singen.
Amazing!
There is no age to begin piano
this man is not too bad!
@EasyListeningLounge humor, dude.
he was so sweet oml
So wonderful, so magical.
This is so perfect in every way
Exquisite! A hint of the Carmen Variations can be heard at min.1.34 .
He was a genius..not just a technician he had a god given feel for music which transcends mere mortal ability
I like his clean play. So little accents come through so strong. Not like Lang Lang who almost falls from the chair to put emotions in his music.
hahahahahahaha
I love the way he bangs out the incredibly difficult octaves in the final bars of the black key etude like it's nothing...nobody comes close to his proficiency at octaves
@carlobraze "Rondo all turca" it's the 3rd movement of a Mozart Piano Sonata, the exact number eludes me right now.
Arguably the greatest pianist who ever lived.
Not arguably
Brilliant short piano performances……nuance and touch…..like Argerich stated in an interview, “ Horowitz was the best lover a piano could have…..” Such an evocative sentiment from another inimitable Artist, who exuded ‘heart & soul’ Music.
Imposible tocar mejor.Dulzura y perfección.💛
Look at those finger movements and listen to the muscial emotions. The instrument is a part of his body. He was a Good.
Classic Horowitz. What a joy he was. Slightly crazy but a joy. Such a beautiful heart and soul.
At 0:45 Mr. Horowitz is playing an excerpt from Rachmaninoff's POLKA de W.R.
In addition to the perfection in execution and the gorgeous music, I am amazed at how much music he has inside his mind. How in God’s name can one remember all that.
They always called Liszt the greatest pianist of all time. My vote is Horowitz.
I think he's the best.
Music, especially Chopin, comes alive with Horowitz. To me it's phenomenal, he's the only pianist I like, and I think he's out of this world!
Phantastic!
He is so delightful
Horowitz - the greatest piano musician - magician.
I would have to invent a new language with even greater superlatives to adequately describe this once in a lifetime, once in the history of mankind talent
He is a gift to us
Какая притягательная, какая счастливая, почти детская улыбка в конце исполнения! Блистательно.
Bravissimo Fenomenal 💛 My Good 😲 !Stupend (Brasil) very much !!!!!!!!!!
How many keys are there on a piano? Horowitz: I don't know, I never counted them. I guess he would fail his entry audition into today's academia.
It's so nice to hear him talk, listening to his voice, smile, and interact with people. Makes me realize that he was more than just a piano virtuoso.
wonderful
He has the most amazing fingers ever, ever, ever.
El mejor para mi en el minuto 5 me dejo sin palabras
Le piano est un instrument merveilleux.
ugggh. the end makes me want to cry. every time...lol
Show me one other pianist at any age who performs those last few octaves in the black note etude any better or cleaner...I have listened to dozens of others and there is NOBODY better.
HOROWITZ did not die...he just went back to his home planet because there is no way this guy was an ordinary human being
Rubinstein, for one. Many others.
I am sorry...but RUBENSTEIN was terribly OVER-RATED in my not so humble opinion. He was famous for making many mistakes and even a non expert can detect those mistakes in many of his performances because they are so flagrant.
Besides there being no comparison in general to HOROWITZ in the issues of overall technical virtuosity or interpretation, neither RUBENSTEIN nor any of the great pianists could play OCTAVES like HOROWITZ...it is so obvious even in Chopin's BLACK NOTE etude that it is not even open to debate...it is and has always been an overwhelming consensus in the musical community.
@@leonmaliniak - Actually, Byron Janis' reading of those octaves is possibly even "better" (whatever that means)... in any case, this isn't a competition... If you never experienced a Rubinstein recital in person, then you can't really comment... he was wonderful... that said, the most overwhelming pianist I ever heard live was, naturally, Horowitz...
Who voted on it ? You and the other members of the " BRAIN DEAD SOCIETY " ?
It is so sad that the Internet is infected with foul mouthed, malicious TROLLS like you who insult people they do not know when all we are trying to do is have a civilized conversation with people from all over the world...without getting into pissing matches.
You think someone else played octaves as well as HOROWITZ...then post a link to one of them and give us PROOF instead of just mouthing off without any evidence.
@Marius Walther You're spot on my friend.
Como amaba horowitz tocar el piano
Simpático e magnífico!!!
