Remembering 'Bloody Sunday' with its youngest participants

  • On March 7, 1965 8-year old Sheyann Webb-Christburg and 11-year old Joanne Bland joined hundreds of others in a civil rights march that was ultimately met with violence, in what came to be known as “Bloody Sunday.” The event shocked the national conscience and contributed to the passage of the Voting Rights Act of 1965. Now, 58 years later, Webb-Christburg and Bland reflect on that period and the continued struggle for justice.“Talking about this history and talking about my experience has been therapeutic,” says Bland. At the time, she says, “no one came to talk to us. No counselors, no physiatrists…So we internalized a lot, and all of it wasn’t good.” The experience turned Webb-Christburg and Bland into activists for life. “If you want to see change, you must be a part of change,” Webb-Christburg tells the students she now inspires.

“Bloody Sunday” became consciously ingrained into my mind when one of my older cousins from Selma came to visit us in Mississippi in 1971. He had a large scar on cut his arm that naturally drew my young inquisitive mind to it. I asked him straightforwardly how he got it. He looked at my grandmother and she nodded her head for him to tell me. I sat spellbound as he recounted the events of Easter Sunday 1965 - it was riveting!!! I never forgot that moment and as long as got older, l began looking up as much information on that event that l could find. When l met John Lewis in 2002, l remembered he was the first to fall in that light colored trench coat! What a moment!!!

These admirable ladies are icons of one of the most epic struggles for human rights. As a young girl I remember seeing the six o'clock news where activists were beaten mercilessly then taken to jail for the audacity of claiming the right to be treated as humans. Every day the news would report another protest met with institutional violence, rabid dogs, beatings and merciless treatment by the authorities. I was young and didn't understand much. But in my young mind I knew that what was happening was wrong. I saw it all on our black and white TV and it was wrong. Nobody had to explain much. It was all there for everyone to see.
