  • Deep in the jungle of Cambodia lies a jewel from the Khmer Empire: the temple of Banteay Chhmar. Half devoured by plants and long forgotten by most people, the 800-year-old complex is being rediscovered, slowly.
The village community of Banteay Chhmar is taking charge. Far from the well-trodden tourist trails, the rice farmers of this small village are trying an experiment unknown in Cambodia: with almost no outside help, they are fighting to preserve and restore their temple using nothing but their own strength. The filmmakers meet a young couple, Sreymom and Sopeng, who are enthusiastically involved in the village’s project. For them, the temple is a sacred place, and they teach their two young daughters to respect Buddha. Sreymom does not want to confine herself to the role of housewife and mother: she has professional ambitions, and applies for a job as teacher at the village school. Her husband, Sopeng, is a rice farmer and works part-time as a temple guide for the few travelers who visit the village. There is a lot to discover, including ornate Khmer reliefs documenting daily life in the ancient civilization, eerie temple tunnels and larger-than-life faces carved into towers that rivall those at the world-famous Angkor Thom. The village’s annual cultural highlight is Bon Om Tuk, the water festival, traditionally held on the water surrounding the temple.

I got stuck in Cambodia during COVID for over a year. I visited countless temples and of course the Angkor Wat and I consider my self to be a lucky one.
I had all the time in the world to explore these ancient gems without tourists, like the time was frozen.
I do not think I will ever have the chance to be that lucky again in my life. Thank you Khmer people for the amazing hospitality, I am forever grateful

I visited Angkor Watt in September 2018, the end of the raining season for 5 days. It's actually very affordable for me because I stayed in a hostel with many international travelers from around the world. The cleaning crew constantly sweep, dusting the property throughout the day. There were free short khemer lessons, street food everywhere. Clothes shopping was great

This makes me want to visit Cambodia now. It seems like restoring the temples is the best decision for their longevity, but you can't argue they're getting a lot of mileage out of it without all that work. I'd rather see people praying and using the temples like in India rather than thousands of people walking through taking selfies. I guess it makes sense in terms of what the temple is meant to be used for.

What a fascinating redeveloping and restoration by Cambodian people of a temple with deep religious and culture significance that has laid to ruin for many decades to welcome people to share in their rich history.

It is a very magical and beautiful temple. I went there before with my family and relatives before the pandemic. It's quite unique that it is located among the busy streets and many houses unlike Angkor Wat and other temples in Siem Reap
