In this video physiology of olfaction is discussed under the following
1. Olfactory receptor
2. Olfactory bulb.
3. Olfactory pathway.
Olfactory receptor is a bipolar neuron present in olfactory membrane which inturn is situated in roof of nasal cavity.
The dendrites of this bipolar neuron form olfactory cilia or olfactory hair which are embeded in mucus.
The cilia adhere to odorants and get activated via GPCR.
The axons of these bipolar neurons form olfactory nerves which pierce the cribriform plate of ethmoidal bone and terminate in olfactory bulb over two cells, the mitral cells and tufted or tuft cells.
The axons of mitral and tuft cells form olfactory tract which terminates in olfactory cortex.
