This video is phenomenal & summarizes practically every aspect of the glorious fangame that is SMBX! I've played this game since the early 2010s and aspired to create an entire 9-World Mario game inspired heavily off of the NSMB series. This project spanned the entire decade & allowed me to dip my toes into the various aspects of game creation as you've mentioned here! I literally cried tears of joy when it was completed, so I speak from experience when I say that this is a phenomenal game! I was brainstorming making a comparison video between the two games, as I do have both, but I think this video just solved this answer for me! I commend you for your service in making a well-thought-out video in SMBX complete w/ voice commentary and passion. We need a whole lot more of that in this community! Again, amazing job! :D
@@SylkaChan If by "try this out" you mean the actual game itself & not my episode, then yes. Every single level you play is essentially custom content, as even the "official levels" are built using the same editor, meaning that every creator has access to the same tools. As for mods, I'm not in that scene but there are definitely a lot of them out there, but I'm not sure where we can download them from. Hope this helps. :)
This is the best alternative to Mario Maker 2, Mari0 or even Mario Multiverse, not actual replacement, I mean, Mario Maker 2 has easy to learn editor and has the most people in of course (took me a while to learn the SMBX Editor), Mari0 having a unique weapon the Portal Gun and Cheats to change the game, and Mario Multiverse for having a lot of gamestyles, you can enable and disable abilities and Online so you don't need to go to a community or internet to search levels, but overall still the best alternatives to any Mario Maker Game/Fangame Edit: After SMM:WE's 3.0.0 Update, it's definitely up there with SMBX
SMBX2 is so underrated... But at the same time, if it got overrated, I'd fear Nintendo ninjas would beat it while it's still down. I love this game, it was my childhood.
By the way the version you are covering is SMBX 2.0, itself an unofficial mod of earlier versions. Here's a rundown: SMBX 1.3-: The original, made by the man himself, Redigit. Yes the same one who made Terraria. Has no scripting aside from events, limited graphic and world map custom assets and less stuff overall. Has Mario, Luigi, and later Toad, Peach, and Link. SMBX 1.4.x (SMBX-38A): An unofficial recreation made by a person shortly called 38A. Has stuff like new powerups, TeaScript (custom language) programming and some other new assets. Also has some different built-in episodes and an updated editor UI. Same roster as 1.3. SMBX 2.0 (SMBX2): An unoffficial mod made by completely different developers from the two other main versions. The one you covered. Lua scripting via LunaLua, accessible dummy items, tons of characters, a wholly new editor, and more. Honorable mention: TheXTech: An open source rewrite of SMBX in 1.3 made in C++ by the people who made SMBX2 from the released source code (which was made in Visual Basic). Contains some small improvements from 2.0 like sound.ini support and PNG graphics, but otherwise is 100% compatible with SMBX 1.3 episodes and is faithful. Although it contains no editor. For that you can use SMBX 1.3 or the PGE Editor (bundled with SMBX2, SMBX 1.3 config pack). That was a long one. Yes I like to sometimes write walls of insight like this.
I like doing custom levels and am really interested in this! Looks so much more fun than Mario Maker is, which I dont like very much since it feels too limited for me.
Mario Maker being limited in objects is a good thing, because to make a fun and enjoyable level you will have to get creative with your limited choices. It trains you in level design
@@xboy9384 Really? My levels in Mario Maker were trash, I tried making traditional ones. The levels I got to build in Reggie level editor, the serious non-joke ones, look so much better and are more fun since I didn't have the same limitations and I guess was more encouraged to actually design something decent. This is level editing for New Super Mario Bros. Wii, if you don't already know, which is similar to NSMBU style but preferred by me. It's really fun choosing whatever music goes with whatever combination of backgrounds and tilesets, putting water and lava wherever I want, etc. I have the volcano and lava themes, beach theme, mountain theme, ice cave, desert cave, ghost forest, water or lava in caves and a lot more options and enemies to work with, and I can adjust nearly anything to how I want it. An example are the Boo circles I put in a ghost house level - I can literally change the settings so one Boo is just floating in place, or have a faster circle with many more in it. Or I can make a roller coaster level with that bone coaster thing from NSMBW. I already designed quite a few levels that would not have happened in Mario Maker's restrictions. Of course it still has it's own limits to what it can do since Mario Maker has its own physics and different programming for enemies and objects, but as I just like designing traditional levels that's normally not a problem for me.
No you’re right. Whatever this guy is saying is almost objectively false. Having a limited palette does not train you in level design. If you are designing levels in a real-world scenario you literally make your own palette. Additionally, because of the scripting capabilities of SMBX, you can literally make any type of level, not just traditional. Heck, even with zero scripting and zero custom assets, plenty of level types can be created (puzzle, speedrun, kaizo, etc.). There is nothing wrong with preferring Mario Maker at all, I won’t argue with that, but the reasons they are claiming makes it better aren’t even true.
@@Chipss Yes it does. It makes you have to work with the limited pallet to make a good level. The point of Mario maker is not to have unlimited choices on what you want to place down, it’s to use what you’re limited to and be able to get creative with it. I understand that it’s not for everyone, but when people say SMBX is better in every way, it pisses me off a lot.
look we all just gotta accept people have differing opinions. SMBX offers so much more in terms of features and customization over SMM2 (which doesn't even let you disable the night-time exclusive effects like the wind for christs sake) but SMM2 is way more user friendly and gets the job done well enough. I personally prefer SMBX (and super mario construct, and literally any ROM level editor like lunar magic) but some people just prefer SMM2's user-friendliness and tidiness which is entirely valid.
@@Kosin-gf7io I mean, they've got a point. Just as in Roblox, you can create pretty much anything, except that the limit no longer is your imagination, but also your money. Unlike SMBX, which usage is COMPLETELY free.
In my opinion, this fangame is certainly better than many other ''Mario Maker-like'' out there. The most surprising thing was that the ''original SMBX'' was made by the creator of Terraria himself, before Terraria itself had even been created! Yes, I saw gameplays of this fangame and I can say that it is one of the most customizable there is, and the number of incredible levels in it are countless, there are some that even look like things you would see in an official Nintendo game! I just didn't start creating levels in this game due to the fact that the editor was very confusing (in my opinion, of course, said by a person who made a lot of levels in Super Mario Construct). But seeing people's opinions, I can confirm that yes, if you want a good Mario Maker-like fangame that hasn't been closed to beta for what seems like ETERNITIES (I'm talking about YOU, Mario Multiverse) and for those who don't have the money to play original Mario Maker, or for those who like to modify, customize but the Mario Maker editor is very limited, this is the best option. Well, that's really the only criticism I have about this game (very confusing editor, which takes a while to get used to), otherwise, play it and you won't regret it. I remember hearing people loose their shit when mario maker was just released. "OMG I CAN MAKE MY OWN MARIO LEVELS???" and I never understood the hype because before that I played tons of super mario bros x and mario flash, both level editors and the campaign.
Wow, this looks much more easier to use than Lunar Magic. This definitely gives more variety and feel to the game. I wish I had known about this a lot, lot sooner!
It is definitely easier to use than lunar magic, and probably has more utility. Then again, it’s unfair to compare a rom hacking tool to a fan game editor.
@@Chipss That's fair. But, it's still pretty cool to have something there that just looks like it would work well (I didn't try the editing tool yet). There are some pretty cool things that are done with Lunar Magic, and it can be quite difficult with the editing. Idk. I guess I still need to try it out more and see how I feel about it. So far, the super mario bros x is pretty alright.
You forgot to mention that there's the original and the SMBX 2 version. The latter having Rockman, Zelda, Wario, Bowser, Ninja Bomberman, Solid Snake, and more.
This is an amazing video, your voice commentary manages to give your video a soul and allows us, the viewers to focus more on the visuals presented on screen without having us read through a bunch of text. It is impressive how you potrayed the difference between MM2 and SMBX and how SMBX has proven to be better because of the extra customization options which gives each user a lot of freedom. SMBX is not better in my opinion, because while it is better for traditional levels, it lacks in puzzle, speedrun, and contraption-based levels. The whole point of Mario Maker is using the limited pallete you have and getting creative with it, using an easy to learn interface makes it so that anybody, literally anybody can make levels. With SMBX, it's less accessible and is better for making standard levels, worlds, and bosses. But since you can get so creative with Mario Maker, in my opinion, it is overall better. Also another thing about Mario Maker, it is much easier to get access to other people's levels.
THE HUB WORLD 😭 that’s so sick. I wish Nintendo understood the possibilities with SMM2. Seems like they hate it. I love SMBX but Mario Maker is something I’ll stick to because of how easy the interphase is.
oh by the way i hate that no one talks about ultimate rinka that one really underappreciated playable character that you can't even switch to in the world map menu funny how they made assets for a level for ultimate rinka for the smbx2 demo stages yet there is no level for them
why does smm2 have so many fucking limits. While SMBX is great, I'm sticking to Mario Maker. SMBX will never be able to achieve the simplicity and fun that is Mario Maker 2's lever editor. With Mario Maker 2, literally anyone can dip their toes into course design. Not only the simplicity, but also different types of levels. Physics work very differently in MM2 (MM2 being Mario Maker 2). SMBX is mainly used for traditional courses, worlds, and bossfights. However, MM2 brings that to a whole new level, allowing you to make different types of contraptions, puzzles, speedrun levels, and more, the best part being that you are limited to a pallet of objects. This may seem what makes the game bad, but it actually makes the game great, because you have to work with this pallet and get creative with it to make a good level. I'm not saying SMBX is bad, it is amazing and far better than mario maker for making any sort of traditional level. I just feel you can get much, MUCH more creative with Mario Maker 2, being limited to a pallet, making contraptions and special mechanics, being very easy and accessible, and most of all, having fun.
Valid points but I've never been a fan of limited content to increase creativity. It seems lazy more than anything. That's like a musician being limited to only a few tones or one octave to compose. The creativity comes from having access to everything, not being limited. I guess it works both ways but I'm disappointed with SMM2's content quantity.

The original smbx was dmcad (Didn't really effect the game at all it's still available) but I am not sure about this one tho? Nintendo is probably unaware or just doesn't care at the moment
@@Fatih_M177 They most likely don't care. The game was only DMCAd to begin with because the domain it used was literally Supermariobros which is kinda stepping on their shoes a bit. I can see why they took action against it but nowadays they don't really care.
Have they improved world map pathways in SMBX? I always thought the path system was really limiting. Compared to Super Mario World, the angles and directions of movement are quite limited.
@@k-leb4671 The base engine hasn’t really seen any changes to paths, but there are several libraries that can be loaded that change aspects of the map system, and another library called smwMap that completely recreates the map system inside level files, allowing for a lot more freedom in map creation.
Hi, I have a question: how exactly do you import custom tiles and stuff for the world map? Yesterday I came back to SMBX2 after a year or so, but I only remember about how to import custom graphics for blocks, items and BGOs, and I can't really find anywhere about how to import them for the world map
Actually been binging a TON of mario maker 2 stuff recently and been interested in making levels / learning the actual mechanics of complex mechanics for levels like kazio
Personally my main gripe with SMBX is that it's tile based, which means there isn't a one-size-fits-all ground block that automatically changes its texture based on where it is
I grew up watching Super Mario Bros X videos and I've always wanted to play it for myself. And I did briefly, but I never fully got into it for whatever reason. I guess I just didn't have much confidence when it came to making levels. However, I might just fully get into it.

The version of SMBX I played as a kid is *nothing* compared to what it can do these days, it seems. I'd always wanted features like custom world map GFX and music, and Samus as a playable character.
Updates come out sporadically, but the next one is planned to take the game out of beta and into full release. I agree smbx is definitely superior and once it is out of beta that is the real deal. Mario maker 2 i enjoy using when I cannot access my PC (handheld switch) But I'm a traditional level maker and mario maker 2 is not optimal at all for my level styles (levels are too small) (no stories) Also if you are on smbx 1.4 come over to 2.0 I've been using 1.4 until this month when i realised I could so much more with 2.0 (which has a much better and easier programming language of lua) Also for those out off by the editor just know you can become decent real quickly) it's all about baby steps my first level made in 1.4 was a simple flat level and now in 2.0 I'm making large ambitious levels

Wait, how does the level designer and local multiplayer in SMBX2 compare, then? because this is just SMBX1? Are smbx and smbx2 parallel games in development as of right now?
SMBX2 is built on top of SMBX. SMBX2 has a brand new editor with tons of improvements and additions. The local multiplayer functionally remains the same. The original SMBX ceased development a long time ago.

@@GreySunGaming Because of the way SMBX2 was built on top of the original SMBX, many antivirus softwares flag it as a virus on accident. However, the game does not contain any viruses. You’ll have to go into your Windows Defender and allow the installer so that you can run it.

Just as an FYI, SMBX also has quite a few cheat codes that can modify the game.
And SMBX is pretty accessible too, unlike say Multiverse or Maker 2.

I'm working on a Mario level editor for Super Mario 64! It's not nearly as advanced as SMBX of course, but you can definitely do a lot with it.

No you’re right. Whatever this guy is saying is almost objectively false. Having a limited palette does not train you in level design. If you are designing levels in a real-world scenario you literally make your own palette. Additionally, because of the scripting capabilities of SMBX, you can literally make any type of level, not just traditional. Heck, even with zero scripting and zero custom assets, plenty of level types can be created (puzzle, speedrun, kaizo, etc.). There is nothing wrong with preferring Mario Maker at all, I won’t argue with that, but the reasons they are claiming makes it better aren’t even true.
@@Chipss Yes it does. It makes you have to work with the limited pallet to make a good level. The point of Mario maker is not to have unlimited choices on what you want to place down, it’s to use what you’re limited to and be able to get creative with it. I understand that it’s not for everyone, but when people say SMBX is better in every way, it pisses me off a lot.
I have a really old version of smbx from 2014 that I installed during quarantine and it is still better than smm2

look we all just gotta accept people have differing opinions. SMBX offers so much more in terms of features and customization over SMM2 (which doesn't even let you disable the night-time exclusive effects like the wind for christs sake) but SMM2 is way more user friendly and gets the job done well enough. I personally prefer SMBX (and super mario construct, and literally any ROM level editor like lunar magic) but some people just prefer SMM2's user-friendliness and tidiness which is entirely valid.
If you don't like SMM2's editor, .4.5 (38A) works well. It's based upon 1.3.0 but has more features and UI improvements.

In my opinion, this fangame is certainly better than many other ''Mario Maker-like'' out there.
The most surprising thing was that the ''original SMBX'' was made by the creator of Terraria himself, before Terraria itself had even been created!
Yes, I saw gameplays of this fangame and I can say that it is one of the most customizable there is, and the number of incredible levels in it are countless, there are some that even look like things you would see in an official Nintendo game!
I just didn't start creating levels in this game due to the fact that the editor was very confusing (in my opinion, of course, said by a person who made a lot of levels in Super Mario Construct).
But seeing people's opinions, I can confirm that yes, if you want a good Mario Maker-like fangame that hasn't been closed to beta for what seems like ETERNITIES (I'm talking about YOU, Mario Multiverse) and for those who don't have the money to play original Mario Maker, or for those who like to modify, customize but the Mario Maker editor is very limited, this is the best option.
Well, that's really the only criticism I have about this game (very confusing editor, which takes a while to get used to), otherwise, play it and you won't regret it.
(finally a Mario Maker-like fangame that allows you to place custom enemies and tilesets, it took a while for this to exist...)

I remember hearing people loose their shit when mario maker was just released. "OMG I CAN MAKE MY OWN MARIO LEVELS???" and I never understood the hype because before that I played tons of super mario bros x and mario flash, both level editors and the campaign.

It is definitely easier to use than lunar magic, and probably has more utility. Then again, it’s unfair to compare a rom hacking tool to a fan game editor.
@@Chipss That's fair. But, it's still pretty cool to have something there that just looks like it would work well (I didn't try the editing tool yet). There are some pretty cool things that are done with Lunar Magic, and it can be quite difficult with the editing. Idk. I guess I still need to try it out more and see how I feel about it. So far, the super mario bros x is pretty alright.
You forgot to mention that there's the original and the SMBX 2 version. The latter having Rockman, Zelda, Wario, Bowser, Ninja Bomberman, Solid Snake, and more.

It is impressive how you potrayed the difference between MM2 and SMBX and how SMBX has proven to be better because of the extra customization options which gives each user a lot of freedom. SMBX is not better in my opinion, because while it is better for traditional levels, it lacks in puzzle, speedrun, and contraption-based levels. The whole point of Mario Maker is using the limited pallete you have and getting creative with it, using an easy to learn interface makes it so that anybody, literally anybody can make levels. With SMBX, it's less accessible and is better for making standard levels, worlds, and bosses. But since you can get so creative with Mario Maker, in my opinion, it is overall better. Also another thing about Mario Maker, it is much easier to get access to other people's levels.

While SMBX is great, I'm sticking to Mario Maker. SMBX will never be able to achieve the simplicity and fun that is Mario Maker 2's lever editor. With Mario Maker 2, literally anyone can dip their toes into course design. Not only the simplicity, but also different types of levels. Physics work very differently in MM2 (MM2 being Mario Maker 2). SMBX is mainly used for traditional courses, worlds, and bossfights. However, MM2 brings that to a whole new level, allowing you to make different types of contraptions, puzzles, speedrun levels, and more, the best part being that you are limited to a pallet of objects. This may seem what makes the game bad, but it actually makes the game great, because you have to work with this pallet and get creative with it to make a good level. I'm not saying SMBX is bad, it is amazing and far better than mario maker for making any sort of traditional level. I just feel you can get much, MUCH more creative with Mario Maker 2, being limited to a pallet, making contraptions and special mechanics, being very easy and accessible, and most of all, having fun.
Valid points but I've never been a fan of limited content to increase creativity. It seems lazy more than anything. That's like a musician being limited to only a few tones or one octave to compose. The creativity comes from having access to everything, not being limited. I guess it works both ways but I'm disappointed with SMM2's content quantity.

@@Fatih_M177 They most likely don't care. The game was only DMCAd to begin with because the domain it used was literally Supermariobros which is kinda stepping on their shoes a bit. I can see why they took action against it but nowadays they don't really care.
Have they improved world map pathways in SMBX? I always thought the path system was really limiting. Compared to Super Mario World, the angles and directions of movement are quite limited.
@@k-leb4671 The base engine hasn’t really seen any changes to paths, but there are several libraries that can be loaded that change aspects of the map system, and another library called smwMap that completely recreates the map system inside level files, allowing for a lot more freedom in map creation.

Hi, I have a question: how exactly do you import custom tiles and stuff for the world map? Yesterday I came back to SMBX2 after a year or so, but I only remember about how to import custom graphics for blocks, items and BGOs, and I can't really find anywhere about how to import them for the world map
Actually been binging a TON of mario maker 2 stuff recently and been interested in making levels / learning the actual mechanics of complex mechanics for levels like kazio

Personally my main gripe with SMBX is that it's tile based, which means there isn't a one-size-fits-all ground block that automatically changes its texture based on where it is
That’s known as autotile, which is possible in SMBX, but is only used by a few blocks (i.e. Yoshi’s Island diggable sand)

The version of SMBX I played as a kid is *nothing* compared to what it can do these days, it seems. I'd always wanted features like custom world map GFX and music, and Samus as a playable character.

Updates come out sporadically, but the next one is planned to take the game out of beta and into full release. There is no set release date but there is a roadmap of what they need to get done here:

Mario maker 2 i enjoy using when I cannot access my PC (handheld switch)
But I'm a traditional level maker and mario maker 2 is not optimal at all for my level styles (levels are too small) (no stories)
Also if you are on smbx 1.4 come over to 2.0 I've been using 1.4 until this month when i realised I could so much more with 2.0 (which has a much better and easier programming language of lua)
Also for those out off by the editor just know you can become decent real quickly) it's all about baby steps my first level made in 1.4 was a simple flat level and now in 2.0 I'm making large ambitious levels

SMBX2 is built on top of SMBX. SMBX2 has a brand new editor with tons of improvements and additions. The local multiplayer functionally remains the same. The original SMBX ceased development a long time ago.

@@AnotherCoyote There have been some experiments done with more than 2 players, but nothing considered complete. Battle mode is currently not working as of the most recent version, but it is planned to be included in the full release.

All graphics are able to be used at all times. There are no distinct game styles. Whatever graphics you want to use, you can use all at once.

@@GreySunGaming Because of the way SMBX2 was built on top of the original SMBX, many antivirus softwares flag it as a virus on accident. However, the game does not contain any viruses. You’ll have to go into your Windows Defender and allow the installer so that you can run it.
