    Quarantined in Rishikesh today. Watching Ma Ganga flow from a window ledge. In the morning light the emerald green mixes with the pink sun, twirling in vortexes. Thanks for the great video. Lets all make mental offerings to her, not put plastic floating candles into her.

      you can see the river in documentary in your country and why you come to watch the river in physical form.
      offering is to make some changes in personal life and give satisfaction. Ganga can give life to people and it will never die (as the author refers many times) I feel very bad when they use those words.

You are great and I really enjoyed this documentary. Wonderful video. It is worth remembering that the Ganga river has also been - mainly through agriculture and trade - one of the key reasons that India has been among the materially wealthiest countries in the world over the past 3000 years. Patna (Pataliputra) was the capital of the glorious Mauryan and Gupta empires that wowed the ancient Greeks. Later, Bengal became the wealthiest region in the world during the Mughal times (as noted by the historian William Dalrymple). All thanks to the resources of Ganga.

    Great and truthful presentation. First we Indians should have courage to accept the fact. He is not defying Hindu religion nor India. Whatever he mentioned is a hard hitting truth. He mentioned cricket as a national game in the context that it is being played widely in the country. All Indians kindly accept the fact and try to contribute cleaning the river in some way. I think preventing water resources is more sacred and important than preventing religion. I think without religion human can live (we did during ancient times) but not without water and ecosystem👍👍

    Very nice video, well researched well photographed and created....every Indian must watch this.
    I am indian, grown in North India and can see things of Video everyday close to Ganga.
    River Yamuna, a tributary of Ganga, is just used to drain the waste of factory and city in its bank, could be Delhi or Agra, it is a same story.
    PM Modi is working towards cleaning it, not sure how much he can succeed, as Hindu beliefs are major factor in Ganga's pollution.
    Note: Video is about Ganga, don't worry if fact about Cricket is wrong. You should appreciate the research of presenter/Nat Geo of Hindu believes. His effort to collect video and photographs form Kanpur leather factory or Agra or remote part of Himalaya.

Sort of making a Bang Lasi of the holly river. I am one of those people who found great adventure in India and do love the place but pollution is pollution and the river is a mess below Rishikesh. With the ever increasing population outstripping everything and replacing it with garbage, nothing is actually going to get better. Great job Nat Geo.. Very well made, some clarifications that i'll like to make since western mind thinks differently than eastern:
    1) God in east doesn't refer to a physical form.. God is more closer to energy rather than western god
    2) That story about river originating from Shiva's hair is more dialectical.. please dont take it literally. Most Indian history is in form of such stories since stories are said to be keep listeners engrossed than facts
    3) You don't just take a dip and clesr all your sins. To attain moshka is a long process, taking the dip helps you but is not a cheat to heaven..
    I have a long list to go, but then this comment will be few pages long..

    Our ancestors, the ancient vedic Hindus worshipped rivers, because we believed that God is omnipresent, he is present in his creation & river, a source of water, life, agriculture for the ancient man is sacred, it is a manifestation of God in form of nature. Our rituals have developed through ages to honor the existence of these rivers, pay homage to them and respect them, however the modern & medieval man shifted from the real rituals to polluting these rivers by throwing their waste in these rivers, our rituals & prayers go in vain if we do not respect the very existence of Ganga & keep polluting it. The Government should declare our rivers as national natural heritage and levy heavy fine for polluting these rivers. We need to save them before the last of these water sources die off due to human waste.

    Not a bad documentary, but it will always be difficult to explain to Western audiences the subtleties of India. The contrasts between cultures are highlighted by the different approach to death. In the US death is hidden, sanitised and feared. In India death is a far more visible and integral part of daily life. Something unavoidable, not something to be denied and escaped.

    There is a big problem that I see already at minute 14 in this documentary. The host mentions the Ganges in front of Agra (Taj Mahal), and although I have never been to India, I atleast know that in front of Agra you have teh Yamuna river, NOT the Ganges. True the Yamuna is a tributarie of the Ganges, but treating one as the other is to me a lack of professionalism. Not to mention all of his data might be "contaminated" (laugh and pund intendes), since he speaks about the river restoring itself, yet ofcourse it can restore itself if we consider the point of entry into the Ganges, NO???

    The speaker mentioned that NITRATE is blown in from China.
    This is incorrect:
    The air current is blowing from South over the Himalaya to China's Tibet year round, there is no industrial center within thousands of miles from Indian border.

    this guy is saying some things that are utter bullsh!t. People are not polluting coz it's sacred and can't be polluted, it's being polluted coz of population growth, urbanization and industrialization. This river has been sacred for 5000 years, it didn't get polluted for last 5000 but last 60 years or so

    • @RyanSlays
      @RyanSlays 8 років тому +24

      +nikhilkay1 Your logic has failed you.
      The MAIN reason that the river is polluted is the religious beliefs that the people of India hold.
      The ridiculous increase in population only magnifies the issue.
      What do you know.... religion is yet again ruining another thing on this planet!

    • @nikhilkay1
      @nikhilkay1 8 років тому +21

      +RyanSlays you are such a idiot. This river is sacred for last 10000 years 8000 years before christ. This wasn't polluted for last 10000 of it's known history. Something changed in last 60 years, and what is pretty clear is urbanization and industrialization. Nothing to do with religion ! Hindu religion cares about nature than any other religion. Science has failed here!!!

    • @RyanSlays
      @RyanSlays 8 років тому +17

      nikhilkay1 There haven't been over 1 BILLION PEOPLE in India EVER until the last 20 years.
      The sheer number of people MAGNIFIES the damage that was already done.
      You are a fucking idiot.. This is a very simple concept that is 100% correct

    • @nikhilkay1
      @nikhilkay1 8 років тому +12

      +RyanSlays so how can you blame the religion here you idiot? Or are you some kind of liberal who believes anything that is against religion

    • @RyanSlays
      @RyanSlays 8 років тому +13

      nikhilkay1 Oh my god, you really are an idiot. I can't believe I have to explain this SIMPLE LOGIC to you
      1. There are over 1 BILLION fucking people in India
      2. 5,000 fucking years ago there were probably less than 5 Million people in India
      3. If 5 Million people do the same thing as the 1 BILLION people do today, obviously there is significantly less of an impact on the river
      4. Since there are over 200 times more people in INDIA TODAY (Probably more than 200x) , then the impact of what the same 5 Million people from 5000 years ago were doing, is MAGNIFIED and causes the river to essentially die
      The religion allows people to pollute the river in the first place. If the stupid ass religious view didn't exist, the river would not be remotely as bad as it is today.
      How do you not get that the sheer AMOUNT OF PEOPLE polluting the river is the reason why it is dead.
      Honestly,. how old are you? I feel as if I'm talking to a child.

    Zinc in Chinese websites and in life has been considered a MUST for growth. There hasn't been solid finding about toxic effect of Zinc, especially from zinc intensive water. But Zinc in body can be replaced by other heavy metals like lead. There was cases of blood cancer burst in Shanghai decades ago. The conclusion is lead pollution in water, not Zinc. Not sure what other chemical effects could turn zinc into lead.

    Nat Geo should also make a documentary on the amount of C02 emissions by the US, Oil spills in the Gulf of Mexico and plastic dumping into the ocean and then you will know what toxic really means.

It's a very relaxing country which you can see from the animals on the street. Human and nature are very close. Thanks for all the efforts. Science can only provide evidence that can be detected, but not evidence that can not be detected.
