I'm recently getting back into tying after a 20 year hiatus. I'm impressed with the UA-cam flytying community! Everyone's very helpful in the comments. No trolls and arguing either. It really is a nicer side of youtube I've never seen before. Man, I sure wish I'd have had access to stuff like this when I learned 25 years ago. Would have made learning so much easier.
I know exactly what you mean, JG! Welcome back to tying, and you'll soon realize a lot has changed over those last 25 years...but in a good way. Don't hesitate to reach out with any questions: tcammisa@gmail.com Thanks! Tim www.troutandfeather.com
Thanks for the comment, Sean, and it's great to hear from you. Have you been out fly fishing yet? Also, are there any updates with your wife? Thanks again, Tim
I tie them with purple and blue hot spots and they work when nymph fishing....But hey! We have bugs hatching who wants to nymph....Thanks Again Tim...Hope all is well
Great suggestion with the hot spots, Ken, and I have yet to use purple (YET!). I know what you mean with the bugs hatching now, though I've used this one as a dropper and it works well with the right dry fly. Thanks for the comments, and I hope all is well. Tim
Once again Tim. Fantastic video. That Perdigon nymph you tied is a winner. I do like that style with the CDL tail. I will send you a picture of one of my Perdigon nymphs to see what you think. Great work my friend. Regards Danny Jett
Thanks for the kind words, and great to hear from you, Danny. This is definitely a keeper and one that works well for me. I'd love to see your own style for this one! Thanks again, and I hope the fishing is good for you. Tim
Thanks for sharing your version, Danny, as they looked really nice! Keep 'em coming, as it's great to see the creativity by you and so many others out there. Tim
Tim, I've been trying to do this fly and had a thought!!! If we using a JIG hook the fly is upside down. Shouldn't the wing case be on the point side of the hook?
Awesome, Tony, and hope some of my other patterns work for you, too! I appreciate you taking the time to comment, and hope all is well in NZ. Tim www.troutandfeather.com
you can keep the slot of the bead on the bottom eliminating the several coats of nail polish to fill in the slot..i dont bother with the wing case anymore buy i always found a new black sharpie was quicker ,neater and no smell..
Great suggestions for this pattern! I prefer to tie it "traditionally" when sharing with others, though there are many variations from this one. Like you, I've eliminated steps and still had success (i.e. no hot spot), thus this is a keeper fly for now. Thanks again for taking the time to comment and sharing your shortcuts. Tim
They are both incredible hooks, Ryan! I prefer the H 400 BL model in smaller hook sizes, especially when I know there is a chance for larger fish. Wide gap hooks by Hanak are excellent, though I prefer their standard gap in smaller sizes to prevent a fish bending them out. Thanks for checking. Tim www.troutandfeather.com
Hey Tim, why not just build up and shape/remove the indentation over the bead with resin, freeze it with the torch, then just put a final dab of black polish over the resin for the wing case as a finishing touch (then let the finished fly dry)? I'm interested to see if I'm doing mine out of sequence. Thoughts?
Hi Dave, and there's no "right sequence" that always works. In this case, I prefer the black polish under at least one coast of the resin to prevent it from chipping away, since it will be bouncing the bottom pretty significantly. If it's applied on top of the resin, it will be gone in no time. Make sense? Thanks for checking! Tim www.troutandfeather.com
Hey Don, thanks for the question. There are a lot of variables, like the water you're fishing, style, price range, etc. Shoot me an email and we can talk specifics: tcammisa@gmail.com In the meantime, here are two videos sharing some of my current rod choices: ua-cam.com/video/q68FBkuzfzc/v-deo.html & ua-cam.com/video/d1oJxrr5L4U/v-deo.html Thanks again! Tim
Hi HB, and that's a good question. Because a jig hook with a slotted bead is intended to ride hook point up, that wing case will be on the "bottom" more often. However, with moving currents, it will be seen and help to show the contrast with the hot spot underneath. If you'd prefer to tie the wing case on the inside of the bead, that will work fine, too. Thanks for checking! Tim www.troutandfeather.com
The fog really depends on the brand of UV resin you're using. For Solarez, it stays clear for me for the season. For other brands, sometimes you first have to wipe them with alcohol, then coat with head cement. I would contact the manufacturer of yours to see what method works best...or get Solarez! ;-) Tim www.troutandfeather.com
That's exactly it, and thanks for checking. Nymphs on jig hooks tend to ride hook point up, but not all of the time. ;-) If fish start truly selecting based on how a nymph is riding in the water column, we're all in big trouble! Tim www.troutandfeather.com
Hi Steve, and this is the correct tying method for the Perdigon. I briefly talked about the location of the wing case in the video, and Devin Olsen also discusses it on his video around the 30-minute mark (ua-cam.com/video/tYaVWOahZFk/v-deo.html). There are many factors to take into consideration, but the two I'll point out: 1. Not all types of nymphs stay on "their feet". 2. Even though the jig hook is encouraged to ride hook point up, it doesn't always due to water currents. Thanks for checking...though I think your fly will fish fine wherever you place the wing case. ;-) Tim
Tim I'm sorry for this Question I got a phone call during the video and must have missed that part .. I love everything you tie and how you explain things Keep up the great work !!! Steve-stabgnid
No worries, as I only briefly mentioned it because I knew that Devin discussed it more in his video. I should have been a little more thorough in my own explanation. Thanks again! Tim
Thank you for the wonderful demonstration as always Tim. I've only tied and fished a few Perdigons but you're right, they are deadly. I have a few friends in Competition fly fishing that swear by them. I'm going to check out Devin Olsen, thank you.
Hi Russell, and I don't have the original package of Krystal Flash with the label. Basically, I prefer a lighter blue, which will help it "pop" in the water. Tim www.troutandfeather.com

excellent tie and great narrative. thanks and all the best.
Nice tie! I Do put the wing case on the other side. I am very happy to see you tying yourself. Thanks Tim, All the best, Sean

Nice pattern Tim great video and love them hooks
Thanks, Patrick...and the Hanak hooks are super nice! Tim
Nice perdigón Tim!
Great video Tim. Loved it. I guess everyone has ther own version of what they look like. I tye mine with Holoshimmer by Sulky. Will send you a pic.😁😁
Thanks for sharing your version, Danny, as they looked really nice! Keep 'em coming, as it's great to see the creativity by you and so many others out there. Tim
Brilliant work! Keep it up!
Thanks!
Great video as always.
Thanks, Russell; I appreciate the kind words! This is a great pattern for me, and there are so many ways to vary it. Tim www.troutandfeather.com

just used this patten in NZ 8 days..... hot as....👍👍👍

Will Have to track down those hooks and beads. Thanks, nice video.
You're welcome, Donal, and thank you for the kind words. Tim

nice Tim

Hi Tim when do you decide to use the Hanak 400 vs the 450?
They are both incredible hooks, Ryan! I prefer the H 400 BL model in smaller hook sizes, especially when I know there is a chance for larger fish. Wide gap hooks by Hanak are excellent, though I prefer their standard gap in smaller sizes to prevent a fish bending them out. Thanks for checking. Tim www.troutandfeather.com

Didn't think of that. Makes perfect sense.
Tim really love your videos!!! May I ask what rod do you recommend???
Hey Don, thanks for the question. Am I mistaken, or is the wing case on the bottom of the fly as it would be oriented when fished?
Hi HB, and that's a good question. Because a jig hook with a slotted bead is intended to ride hook point up, that wing case will be on the "bottom" more often. However, with moving currents, it will be seen and help to show the contrast with the hot spot underneath. If you'd prefer to tie the wing case on the inside of the bead, that will work fine, too. Great video as usual Tim..keep it up remember to post to the Cheech page as well.
Kull.
Thanks, Kull, and I'll be sure to do that. I appreciate you taking a moment to check this one out. Tim
The Hard as Nails coat prevents UV foggy-ness? im getting the fog you were talking about.
The fog really depends on the brand of UV resin you're using. For Solarez, it stays clear for me for the season. For other brands, sometimes you first have to wipe them with alcohol, then coat with head cement. what kind of vice is that again
Stonfo Transformer is the vise...
Nice fly! Do you not glue the bead on the wire wrapped hook?
Thanks, Al, and I don't glue it until the UV resin is applied at the end. Tim
yep, these ride upside down from how they are usually tied...right? probably the fish don't care since they are used to seeing tumbling nymphs?
for those pondering "inversion" , lol " www.tacticalflyfisher.com/blog/wingcases-shellbacks-and-wings-to-invert-or-not-to-invert-that-is-the-question/

Tim jigs ride hook up .. so did you tie this backwards ?? Should the shell back be on the other side ???

Qie resina usas
I believe you may be asking about resins? If so, I prefer Solarez Bone Dry. Thanks! Tim www.troutandfeather.com
Hay Tim hello from Colorado. What color blue did you use when you tied it a couple weeks ago?
Hi Russell, and I don't have the original package of Krystal Flash with the label. Basically, I prefer a lighter blue, which will help it "pop" in the water. Tim www.troutandfeather.com
👍😎
Thanks!
Love your videos but this one seems to hoity toity for me.
Sorry to hear that, DJ, though fortunately, it's a fly that the trout like. ;-)
