I've been gardening 35 years, since my italian grandpop started having me help him. However, a refresher on the basics never hurts, and Nate... He breaks it down the best. Einstein is quoted with saying “If you can't explain it to a six-year-old, then you don't understand it yourself”. Now, although Einstein never actually said this, it doesn't matter. Some brilliant person did, and it's so fundamental that any teacher understand this... Nate gets this. #LookToNatureHomestead
I think it's the first time for a lot of us my friend. Lots of us have relocated into completely different environments and lives altogether. Tis, do or die - learn or perish, for a lot of us. Your video came at just the right time spiritually. That 'slave to the system' mentality is easy to fall back into when one is panicked. We are calmer now.
I agree with another commenter... Best video on beginner gardening!!!! I've been gardening for only a few years now however I appreciate learning new things on review. I'm building new vegetable garden for my daughter, son in law and grands so...I'm beginning again. Thanks for teaching me to GARDEN LIKE A VIKING!!!!!❤

Food for the soul brother. Far more than a gardening channel. This is a life channel. Your intensity is captivating. One of my favorite Viking episodes. Cheers for sharing your wisdom
1000% agree with everything in this video. One thing I'd add, weeds are your friends. They can go down even deeper to draw up nutrients. Leave them alone, when they flower they attract pollinators and just as the flower heads are dying and before they set seed, chop them back and leave on the ground to rot.
Great video! I have been growing this way for years! We have enough property and mature trees to make about 3-1/2yds of leaf mold each year. Mixed with compost, it truly is one of nature's finest materials to grow with. Love your passion to work with nature!
I made a beautiful hugel once and had never even heard of them. Hunks of clay from digging to make gardens, limbs and branches, leaves, throwing any extra soil on from dig-ups. Had beautiful flowers growing there. Love the way you describe the life process. Blows my mind that the technocrats want to do away with it and replace with synthetic
Technocrats know this but just want to make money for themselves. Çreating a problem so as to benefit from it, they came and told rural farmers to leave their traditional ways of farming in so doing made the earth barren and now they can sell more poisons and misinformation and benefit from it. It's pure evil
So many good concepts in here. I see it happen real time too! I have wild wineberry bushes that come up every year on their own. They were there before I owned the land and I don’t do anything, not even water. They come up strong every year with tons of free wineberries.
Thank you SOOOOO much for that!!!!!!!!! I never wanted to use chemicals (and don't use fertilizers) but I had such a massive aphid problem, I've actually stopped growing anything. Have had my chooks in there for a couple of mo ths or more. One big problem I have made is not having any mulch....keeping the garden all nice and tidy 😮😢 I will now load it up with mulch and let that all do what it does and then start growing again in a couple of months....hopefully 😅

Lots of really great information ! I use as much natural stuff as I can . I have a hard time making enough compost and natural fertilizer for all I got to cover. We bagged up like a couple of acres of leaves and grass clippings this Fall that we have been using for compost even though it's not 100 % broken down yet . We planted a couple of rows of potatoes today by just laying the potatoes on the ground and covering them up with that half done compost . Thanks for sharing and I hope you have a great evening !
thats a really effective way to grow potatoes!... you'll have a great harvest I'm sure of it... especially if you soak them with some of the natural liquid fertilizers they'll go crazy and the taste is beyond compare!

Hi thank you so much for your video! From your content, I know you are the only person in gardening I can trust now. Lots of gardening youtubers out there don't have your knowledge and passion for our nature! I'm living in an apartment with no balcony. I've been trying to grow some food but got stock with fertilizer issue. At first I wanted to grow hydroponically but then found out the compost I made from food scrap couldn't be used hydroponically! So I switched to grow in potting mix and use store-bought organic fertilizer. My question is: can I use the compost made from food scrap for indoor gardening? If not, what is your recommendation? There are little information out there regarding indoor gardening. Do you have a video for it? Or Can you please make one if you can?

Hi ! I love your videos I would suggest you to write a book which can teach us to learn and apply the knowledge step by step, you can also produce videos for each common crop ( For example wheat rice pulses and beans) separately like you have produce for onion. Your videos are excellent. Great work
I have been gardening pretty serious for a number of years. Some years are better than others. In spite of doing most of the things right I .have been almost defeated this year. A real bummer. I have two fences around my garden One electric. In the spring the electric fence failed and deer got in the garden and ate most of my strawberry plants. Voles ate my potatoes and the high temperatures, scorching sun and lack of rain reeked habit on my pole beans and tomatoes. Finally we are getting a good rain and temps are below 100. I am hoping for a better fall garden. I am trying your fertilizers and learning a lot .
Exactly, the fertilizer doesn't feed the plants roots, the soil microbiology eats the fertilizer and then breaks it down and secrets the stuff that the plants roots need. This is one of the big reasons I stopped watching so many gardening channels, before I even really started. They would make a seedling mix of cococore and a few things to help with water retention and drainage, but then turn right around and poor fertilizer into this lifeless mixture, after claiming to be experienced and teaching us something lol. This is why, when I make my seedling soil mixture at the start of each gardening season, I add some natural soil and leaf mold to the mix. My neighbors plant some of the same stuff as me, yet every year my seedling are so much bigger and healthier and my plants in the garden do twice as good as theirs and they keep scratching their heads lol.
Just subscribe to your channel, I’m very excited to garden with you and your beautiful reasoning are simple ideas that I can understand and am so happy to sharing with my children and grandchildren too! From HAWAII 💞🌺🫶🏼💯🫶🏼🙏🌺
I absolutely love all your videos. It contains valuable information given to us in a very simple way. You teach me a lot. I have already started making my own JLF as well as extracts and I can see the difference in my garden.Keep the videos going! Regards from South Africa 🇿🇦
aww thank you my friend and yes I have been told that before about the voice but I don't know how to do ASMR... do I just get a good mic and speak softly into it like I'm whispering into a lovers ear?
Love your work mate and think this is your best vid yet! Beautiful intro and summation of the core concepts of a lot of really lovely methods: KNF, JADAM, Organics, Permaculture, Agro-Ecology etc :D
"creatures" "and other creatures". Thank you for acknowledging all these were Created; because it is impossible anything popped itself into existence; gravity, quarks, centrifugal force, light, carbon, water and all. It is impossible those began their own existence, and close enough in time and space to cooperate in modifying themselves to higher states, and without consciousness.
Thank you Nate for taking the time to put these videos together. The timing of my discovery of your content is profound. We are a family of 5 in Minnesota. I'm feeling great guilt for not flexing these skills and being independent of the machine. You speak in such a palatable way and every detail is easily chewable. So again, thanks dude. I have a few questions to get started. 1. Lots of native rabbits in my yard and there is poo all over. Would this poo make great in compost or an addive to one of your brewing fertilizers? 2. I have a larfe pine tree in my yard not sure what kind. A solid blanket of pine needles surrounding it. Could I find quality "mold" similar to the "leaf mold" underneath all the needles? Thanks much for your time. Getting some taters going asap! Peace!
thank you for that inspiring feedback my friend!!!... #1. Yes rabbit dung is very beneficial and is one of the most mild and balanced of the dung fertilizers... add it directly to the hole when planting or spread it around the plant and lightly mix into the soil with hands... also a tea is good... I'll soon make a video on this topic.... #2. Mould from an old hardwood forest is best but yes if the pine is what's in your area then use that... go to the base of the tree and dig down just an inch or two and get the crumbly black stuff that looks like soil and preferably has some white fungi strands already in it...
Just a tip: when a plant is in shade, it tries to grow larger leaves to catch the sun. In general, we want to have larger leaves on our greens. (I learned this through a mistake I made, and had fabulous greens. But also, keep a more vigilant eye out for mold/rot in shade). Just a tip, hopefully the master Gardener can respond with additional wisdom
I'm happy you are here my friend!!... I'll do a video on shade tolerant plants but Granny is right the leafy greens can produce well in the shade... such as mustard greens, Swiss chard, spinach... collard greens... lettuce... the plants won't typically be as large as if grown in the full sun but they'll still produce... go for it!
I know leaf mould isn't complicated, but for some reason I'd love to see a video on making the perfect leaf mould as every bag I do is different so I still havnt used any as my crop is a cash crop litterly my only income to support my family so hesitant to do any thing that could harm it...
Thank you very much for all of the information that you are providing! I have a question. What are your thoughts on using a large dog food bag instead of the black plastic contractor bags because this is what I have on hand.
Hi! I live in a wood area where your water supply is very limited, do you have any tips on how to maintain a big garden with an efficient way to use your water supply Thanks again I love your channel 🙂
yes I do and I'll make a video on this topic soon... the short answer is lots of mulch!...keep every inch of the soil covered with 3-6 inches of organic matter like leaf mould, grass clippings, leaves, straw, etc and that will dramatically slow evaporation...
Many thanks for sharing your wisdom with us, your an absolute delight to learn from because it is your passion & I seem to be soaking up all this great info easier knowing it's all natural as the thought of having to use various chemical concoctions never sat well with me & put me off starting, so you kind sir are a breath of fresh air. Thank you 🕊️💞🌱
Hi I'm a brand new gardener I guess put my first plants out in Arizona 3 weeks ago I took put some seeds in store-bought soil, I have tiny little plants popping through the soil. Will they continue to grow or was I just lucky?
I am in the middle of the learning curve when it comes to starting my own seeds… In the past I have not made it a priority to learn and just end up buying my plants, but I want to get this. It’s an important skill and so far I have failed twice. I have rewatched your videos and taken notes so once more I’m going to start all over and see if I can finally get some nice healthy plants. Thank you for your videos! I do have a question about what to start the seeds in. There are so many options.. does it matter if it’s a plug tray a four pack or a soil block? So far I have tried the larger plug trays and then the itty bitty ones. This time I will use a four pack and see if it works better. But maybe give us newbies a video going over the million and one options of containers. I mean I remember in grade school starting plants in our milk carton lol but when to upsize and all that would be helpful. Thank you again I am learning lots!!
hello karen I suggest starting with the setup in this video and using the red solo cups I show ua-cam.com/video/LwzcfvpCNfc/v-deo.html... .keep it simple and you will have success this year!!
How do we dispose of any chemical fertilizer that we may have without further poisoning the soil? I also have some straw bales for mulch I haven't spread yet but now concerned about herbicides and or insecticides on that straw...not even sure I find out if it does or doesn't...I would guess they will have been sprayed.
thats a tricky one and you have to ask the farmer if he sprayed the wheat or not... then try a small amount around some really sensitive plants like tomatoes and see if it effects them
I do believe nature tills or turns just a little bit. Not in the way we like to till but all the animals that come through hell disturb the soil some. Lots of diggers come through bug hunting and hoofed animals like deer come through in heard and can really till up some dirt. Well, I like to think of it as tilling! Every now and then I'll plop over a hunk of dirt on top of something I'm composting on poor hard soil or take the prong fork and just poke some holes. Areas where there hasn't been much of any life at all, from tiny to big, I try to re-enact what the different critters might do.
Can some root and fruiting plants work with partial shade in the event that its in a subtropical environment? For example, I live in an apartment where my patio gets almost all of the a.m. sun but none of the afternoon sun. My area in FL also happens to have sunny weather in the mornings with the majority of our summer rains happening in the afternoon or evening.
I have successfully grown a pineapple but that is of course one of the easiest plants to grow that only pure neglection can kill. I am now attempting to grow tomatoes, Egyptian spinach, Kentucky wonder pole beans, strawberries, and hopefully blueberries. I also have green onions that have been going strong for over a year. I hope I did not make a mistake by attempting tomatoes 😕
I think you will have success with mostly anything you try... most plants love that kind of weather of morning sun and afternoon rain... definitely any of the leafy greens will work great for you
@@gardenlikeaviking That's good to know. As long as I get something I'll be happy. Wish my balcony was not enclosed on the ceiling for the rains to come in.
only the fertilizers and the microbial solution yes you can spray before rain because the rain will help carry it deeper into the soil!!... but the natural pesticides we do not want the rain to wash them off
This is out of context but I need to know. Can the weed formula be used in place of the grass formula? At this point I have weeds available. I need to source the grass.
Having a compost or buying good compost is very important and a massive money saver, I bury dead animals i find in my compost, and theres never anything left by the time I use it
My main drive for wanting to grow a garden is rather different. Over this past winter I worked a lot on my genealogy. In doing so it finally dawned on me. That other than my father and I, all of my grandfathers were farmers, one way or another. Now here I am present day reading and watching all these videos saying to add this or add that to the soil costing hundreds of dollars that I simply do not have. And I just sit here thinking. Well when my 6th or 7th great grandfathers broke first ground in either Kentucky, Illinois, or Iowa, and this was all Pre Revolutionary war, they didn't have all this crap and they survived. So why should I need all this crap. I want to do it how they did it for the most part. I now finally own my own land and am able to do something. I've spent the first summer of ownership clearing trees and stumps. The second summer setting up a mobile home to live in. putting in septic, electric and a well. now I want to build the garden on virgin ground. However I am in Alaska, And I am real close to an area of permafrost. I love the way you conduct your videos and how you are able to relay your personal knowledge. I am so happy that I found your videos today. I love them.
thats an inspiring story my friend thank you for sharing!!... you are absolutely right they didn't use so many of the things we currently think are "necessary" for farming!!!... everything you need can be made yourself from things found near you... thats the entire basis of this channel!!
Me taking gardening like a viking too heart when i heard death creates life! - Gf: what you doing?!?! Me: right well then lets pop this dead monk under my carrots be a shame to waste! To the cycle he goes !
Put synthetic fertilizer into a 5 gallon bucket filled with rain water to dissolve. Draw off some of that water and keep diluting it until it gets down to 250 ppm of total dissolved solids. Making it equal to mineral rich well water. Not burning or killing microbes
This is actually one of the best videos I have seen on UA-cam on this subject. Good job explaining for beginners. 👏👏 Came for the fertilizer videos, but staying for all the other content. ❤️

I am trying your fertilizers and learning a lot .
stay strong my friend the earth wants to grow food for you just need to figure out how to adjust your system a bit
Ok, well i dont think im really a beginner anymore.. 🤔 but as u said, even a veteran might learn something about this video, so lets listen 🙏🙏🙏
Love the analogy Thank you
🙏thank you!
Binge watching today. Great channel!
I absolutely love all your videos. It contains valuable information given to us in a very simple way. You teach me a lot. I have already started making my own JLF as well as extracts and I can see the difference in my garden.Keep the videos going! Regards from South Africa 🇿🇦
thank you for the positive energy and feedback my friend!
Very interesting. Thanks for sharing your experience!
I wish I had learnt all this years ago, Ive now reached my 75th year but not to old to learn.
its NEVER too late my friend!! now is the perfect time to learn
Brilliantly simple. Thanks
love your channel! you should also consider ASMR gardening vids with your lovely velvet voice.
aww thank you my friend and yes I have been told that before about the voice but I don't know how to do ASMR... do I just get a good mic and speak softly into it like I'm whispering into a lovers ear?
Thank you
❤❤❤❤❤
Love your work mate and think this is your best vid yet! Beautiful intro and summation of the core concepts of a lot of really lovely methods: KNF, JADAM, Organics, Permaculture, Agro-Ecology etc :D
It's like hearing something, and knowing it's Truth. Fundamental and primary to "methods" is Great Mother smiling through the bs
I am happy you see the essential truth underlying all those methods... thank you my friend..
"creatures" "and other creatures". Thank you for acknowledging all these were Created;
because it is impossible anything popped itself into existence; gravity, quarks, centrifugal force, light, carbon, water and all.
It is impossible those began their own existence, and close enough in time and space to cooperate in modifying themselves to higher states,
and without consciousness.
I've seen your similar comments on several videos my friend thank you!... please can you clarify what exactly are you saying here?
Your videos are great, keep going!
So intense! Can you make me a video explaining the refrigeration cycle and superheat and subcooling?
Will likely be watching them more then once
Thank you..👏❤
Your principles are also for us, not just plants.
Excellent video! In my experience everything homemade better
Sweet.
Love it Man, keep it up.
Great information as always. ❤️
Would love to know which plants are best for shaded areas. Thanks for this video. Pleased that I subscribed to your channel.
I'll do a video on shade tolerant plants but Granny is right the leafy greens can produce well in the shade... such as mustard greens, Swiss chard, spinach... collard greens... lettuce... the plants won't typically be as large as if grown in the full sun but they'll still produce... go for it!

Thanks for your reply.

Thanks for this info. Have a shady area that needs to be used to grow food. Cannot eat grass.
I will learn from you
I like your video and also your look.
thank you my friend
💪👍🙋
Hi! I live in a wood area where your water supply is very limited, do you have any tips on how to maintain a big garden with an efficient way to use your water supply
Thanks again I love your channel 🙂
yes I do and I'll make a video on this topic soon... the short answer is lots of mulch!...keep every inch of the soil covered with 3-6 inches of organic matter like leaf mould, grass clippings, leaves, straw, etc and that will dramatically slow evaporation...
Thank you 🕊️💞🌱
I'm very happy you are here Anna... let me know if you have any video idea suggestions
I think you will have success with mostly anything you try... most plants love that kind of weather of morning sun and afternoon rain... definitely any of the leafy greens will work great for you
your tomatos will work they'll just be smaller than full sun tomatoes
@@gardenlikeaviking That's good to know. As long as I get something I'll be happy. Wish my balcony was not enclosed on the ceiling for the rains to come in.
Can you burn the plants from going to a stronger ratio?
VERY GOOD VIDEO. THANKS FOR THIS INFORMATION
Any video on soil ???
Can I use pine needles as a mulch layer?
yes they work great
Brother can i spray my garden before rain ☔ i have ten acres of land i need ur advice
only the fertilizers and the microbial solution yes you can spray before rain because the rain will help carry it deeper into the soil!!... but the natural pesticides we do not want the rain to wash them off
This is out of context but I need to know. Can the weed formula be used in place of the grass formula? At this point I have weeds available. I need to source the grass.
yes they can... the weeds fertilizer is a really good one!
Having a compost or buying good compost is very important and a massive money saver, I bury dead animals i find in my compost, and theres never anything left by the time I use it
Yep. It my pet cemetery
absolutely correct and I have been composting in place for years with great results!!...
The secret is in the mycelium.
I'm afraid of the plastic chemicals from the contractor bags leaching out into the dirt, so I use plain cardboard boxes wrapped in chicken wire.
How to make and use non fermented urine.
simply capture urine and dilute with water 1:10..... it will still work but this method is far more effective and concentrated IME
Me taking gardening like a viking too heart when i heard death creates life! -
Gf: what you doing?!?!
