    I have a 1928 Case Radio and that section in front you have with the tuning and knobs is a metal plate with that was painted and a sticker was placed over top of if its the same as mine. Its great that the missing compressed carvings are still inside the radio those would be hard to duplicate otherwise. That will be a great project Buddy thanks for sharing.

    Nice video Buddy… You have a lot of work ahead… regarding the panel needed for the back of the radio I would use a piece of cabinet grade ply that is veneered with oak on one side. Don’t waste your time trying to find a solid piece of oak like that. Besides, the cabinet grade ply is far more stable than a solid piece of wood. There’s a place by me on Long Island called Roberts Plywood…. It’s the size of a Home Depot but all they sell is wood. I’m certain there’s a place like that near you. And the electronic restore looks to be just as involved… Keep us posted… 73

    • @TheRadioShop
      @TheRadioShop  3 роки тому

      Thanks Mark. I did find out the cabinet is now walnut, just stained to look that way. so about anything I can find can be stained to imitate. We do not have any just wood stores here anymore. Just Lowes and Home Builders. Not even a cabinet shop left here. I do not think the electronics will be too bad but still a lot of work.

    The two 81/281/381 rectifiers don't need to be matched. 50 tubes are very rare and sought after; definitely treat them with care. There is an adapter to use a 6L6 in its place if it's necessary.

    What a nice project radio you got there Buddy. I'm not surprised there was an old penny in the fuse holder! Looks like something Glasslinger would work on.
    As for the cabinet the best photo I have seen is at radiolaguy.com/images/consoles/Sparton_301.jpg Quick note on the tubes. The two 50 's are worth their weight
    in gold! Could use 2A3 tubes in their place I think. Don't use 27 tubes because they draw excessive current. Use 56 tubes for the 484/485 tubes.
    Best to check with all that at Antique Radios Forum.There are people who have posted there that know more than I! Don't let it become just another wine cabinet!🤞

    I think you'll find that the wood isn't actual walnut, but poplar stained and manipulated to resemble walnut. Spartan and Atwater Kent were extremely cost conscious in their choice of materials, and would very rarely use "the real thing" if they could get away with using a good imitation. An excellent case in point being the molded dough imitation carving used on the front of this set in place of actual carved wood. They knew that the average Joe on the street couldn't tell real walnut and expensive and time consuming carving from fake, which is why they used the celluloid imitation burl walnut on the front insert of this radio instead of real walnut veneer. I'm with you, though, I would replace the imitation insert with real walnut burl veneer. It's not that expensive and relatively easy to apply. I am really looking forward to watching you tackle this fine old radio. I know you'll do your usual excellent job!

    • @TheRadioShop
      @TheRadioShop  3 роки тому

      You are correct on the wood. A friend came over and verified it is poplar. I will say they did an excellent job of making it look like walnut. And yes, a nice piece of walnut veneer behind those knobs will look really nice! Thanks for the comment.

    You have to wonder Buddy why somebody would buy something like that and then put into such adverse storage conditions for so long. That's a big project for sure. I hope all the iron is good. You also have to be suspect as to why old Abe was in the fuse holder. Good luck with it. Stay well. ATB Doug.

    • @TheRadioShop
      @TheRadioShop  3 роки тому

      Agree Doug. Some folks either do not care or do not know what they have. Being the penny was 1925 makes you wonder how long it has been in there. The radio has not been played since the early 70's.

    add mechanical vibration to the filter/separator, so that it rattles the filter and cyclone separator unit. probably best in varying speeds VFD drive or old school rheostat ;)
    that should help keep the blasting ash knocked free, in combination with the cyclone swirl effect. it will still collect up regardless!

  • @gr2238
    @gr2238 3 роки тому +1

    There are still a few woodturners still out here, don't give up too soon. That foot should be easy to make. The veneers are likely held on with hide glue you may be able to reactivate that with a heat gun and clamp it back together. You just need to find someone that knows wood like you know radios to help. Just wish I was closer.

    • @TheRadioShop
      @TheRadioShop  3 роки тому

      Thanks, wish you were closer also!. But I must admit, I been in wood working just about as long as I have been in electronics, just not on this level. I did check the glue to see if it would re-stick but no go. Biggest challenge is finding some small pieces of walnut to finish out the broken off parts. Not many wood working shops around here anymore. Most have passed on years ago.

    • @gr2238
      @gr2238 3 роки тому

      @@TheRadioShop Too bad about the glue, time has likely dried it beyond hope. Most walnut these days won't match well anyway, you'll have to stain it to match. Sadly I've had too part with most of my tools, still have a lathe and drill press but have sold most. Bad knees and back limit how much I can do. I'm up north in Canada but I do believe there is some walnut still in the basement. If all else fails get in touch. PS I've been at both a long time as well my dad VE1XP also taught wood working so I grew up around both.
