    “With programmed drums, can you use the same EQ principles that you’ve gone over or has this already been done in the programming stage?”
    As you probably know a couple of weeks ago I talked about the fact that I’m going to be releasing my own drum samples in a way that you can really get into velocities and all that kind of stuff. I did record them the way that I like to hear them.
    However, like Al Schmitt, I don’t EQ a lot on the way in. I do it mainly on the mix- there will be a little bit of EQ applied to the drums to give them the sound that I want.
    ➡️Questions Covered in this weeks FAQ Friday:
    • What monitors control are you using to switch between the three sets of speakers? (0:45)
    • How do you set up your split console for mixing? Do you have several analog mix templates that you return to depending on the artist material you’re working with? (1:32)
    • With program drums, can you use the same EQ principles that you’ve gone over or has this already been done in the programming stage? (5:59)
    • I also EQ before reverb, is there ever a reason to EQ afterwards? (8:45)
    • What books are standing on the back of the mixer and why do you keep them there? (10:00)
    • When you mention “Glue” on parts like drum kit, how can we define that without being subjective? Is it standard distortion similar to EQ or compression? Or all of the above? What creates that effect in your experience? (14:41)

    Thanks for a very good year of valuable information Warren and Team.
    When I first found your youtube channel (tail end of 2017), I literally knew nothing, about recording, mixing or producing music.
    I was interested, but didn't know if that interest would grow or fade over time.
    I'm a Tortoise, not a Hare, I like to take my time, do some simple research, explore as many options as possible, before taking a leap.
    I've spent this year, trying out different DAW's, sifting through Free plugins, watching videos, Cobbling together bits and pieces of equipment, instruments (which I need to learn to play) etc, preferably without splashing cash on something, that I may or may not stick at.
    Feeling my way into this vast subject, which music is.
    Now, after a year, the interest has not faded at all, in fact (thanks mainly to this channel and community), it has grown !
    Quick shout out to Rick Beato, and New Jazz channels, they've helped keep my interest going and growing too.
    2019, will be spent trying to put into practice, all that I have "gleaned" for free so far.
    So Thank you Warren and team for the encouragement, the enthusiasm, the sense of fun, and the sharing of knowledge.
    The COMMUNITY you have generated is absolutely first class, they are all helpful, even to those like me who are subscribers but not members of PLAP Academy (yet).
    Thank you ALL, (you've made it a fun year for me), have a wonderful Holiday season, take care, have fun, make the best music you can (then improve it), and as I look forward to next year, I wish you ALL success in your endeavors, whether Pro, semi-Pro, or like me struggling to learn the basics ;0)

    I've been having a lot of fun running programmed drums through the pres on an old reel to reel (TEAC 4010S) - it imparts a beautiful sort of wooly sound that really works nicely for some of the tracks I'm producing lately. If you put them on to tape at approx 2X the speed you're after and play them back at 1/2 speed that's another wonderfuul lo-fi universe to explore.

    I've tried pretty much all of the top drum plugins and while I've landed on EzDrummer2, I completely agree that the drums are extremely compressed and EQ'd, so it does make it both easy to achieve great sounds from the gate, but difficult to EQ in the mix process. What I will typically do is add additional trigger samples, reverbs, delays and saturation, to dial in the sound that best serves the song.

    Love the video, as always! Always pull something new with every FAQ Friday. Got a question on your comment regarding measuring from the snare though: I've recently gotten into the habit of eyeballing my overheads (and/or rooms, where applicable), after seeing a video of Glyn Johns demonstrating his drum technique. Does it really make that much of a difference if you've got than about an inch and a half difference, or do I just have stupid ears?

    • @Producelikeapro

      Hi Herr Nox, yes, it does seem that each Drum Plug In has it's own issues and you have to treat them all differently!

    • @Producelikeapro
      @Producelikeapro  5 років тому +1

      Hi MorbidManMusic, it seems from. some of the comments here that each Drum Software has varying degrees of processing applied and a couple of people have said that some are also uneven, meaning the kicks and snare might be heavily processed and then the other elements are not. So, yes it does seem there is no standard answer! Haha

    • @HerrNox
      @HerrNox 5 років тому

      @@Producelikeapro I usually try to work with the driest sound possible with my drum plugins whenever possible (no reverb, no effects). So it sounds pretty close to a "real drum" situation - a perfect situation I should say, without bleed or unwanted noise. It gives me a bit more space to create a unique drum sound.

    Great video! But I have one question: Does it make a difference if you EQ before or after reverb? Of course, the reverb may change the spectrum of the audio so you may have to EQ the audio differently before and after the reverb. But is there a real difference between EQing before and after the reverb or is it mainly convenient?
    Oh, and this is the very first time someone explained "glue" in a helpful way. Than you ever so much!

    • @Producelikeapro
      @Producelikeapro  5 років тому +1

      Thanks ever so much Jürgen! I really appreciate your marvellous question! Yes, it does make a difference where the EQ isn placed. Before the reverb won't 100% control it, it will just shape it, after the reverb it controls it much greater! I usually start with using EQ before! Then If I';m still hearing too much high air low end then I will eq afterwards! I hope that helps?

    Hey Warren, small correction: All Superior Drummer sounds (that I know of) are raw. SDX libraries often come with mixer presets and such that will apply the effects of whoever made/was involved with the library (Rock Foundry SDX by Bob Rock for example), but you can always change those things and you always start with a raw sound.

    At what sample rates do you set your interface for tracking? 44.1, 48, 96, etc.

      Hi Tim, marvellous question! If I"m mixing, I mix at the sample rate the artist or Producer provided. Otherwise I'm often at 48k, however I work at higher rates as required. I hope that helps?

    • @royleenelsontx
      @royleenelsontx 5 років тому

      Eric Serafin "Mixerman" has written at length about this on his site, Facebook group, and in his books. Sample rate isn't as important as the material at hand (do you have a great song, played greatly by great musicians?). I've recorded for years at 44.1, and 48. I mostly used 44.1 while hard drive space was at a premium. Now it can be had so cheaply, that 48k is what I use most often. I see no real pressing need to go to 96k - not that it doesn't have its uses. Like Mixerman, I'd much rather hear a great song by a great artist at 44.1, than utter crap at 96 (or even 192) any day. That said, use what makes sense to you. :)

    Question: if one is using just a VST drumkit based on samples is there a way to bus it to a track and have that track imitate the overheads some way? Probably a dumb question but just wondering.

    • @michi9955

      Some (most?) drum plugins also have seperate room and overhead mics

    • @theaviary238
      @theaviary238 5 років тому

      That is true. However, the reason I ask is because I use Ableton drum racks to build my kits and that functionality is not on it. It is akin to loading drum samples into an MPC or something of that nature so I would like a way to parallel route the drums to a track and treat that track as to imitate overheads to make the kit more alive. Thanks.

    FAQ question.
    I’m considering purchasing a FET compressor/limiter. I would really love to get the Universal Audio 1176LN, but I can’t wrap my head around the price. For about $2000.00, I could get quite a bit of other gear. My question is: Can a $500.00 “Warm Audio WA76” or $400.00 “Klark Teknik 1176-KT” perform just as well. They all have similar components and class-A transformers. Would there be any noticeable differences in sound quality? Is the high price tag on the UA just for the name and cult status?

    For some reason, find EQing drum samples way harder than drums I recorded. I can only think that it's from all the processing that went on behind the scenes.

    How to compress a vocal that is too dynamic? Normal voice / scream / normal voice/ whisper.

      Have you looked into vocal rider or manual volume automation?

    • @Ggggpr
      @Ggggpr 5 років тому

      @@michi9955 I did, but sometimes the "scream" loses presence when I even the signal, for example, if the normal voice is at -6db, the scream has to be at - 2db to sound in a similar aparent volume to normal voice. I wonder if this is normal because it hapens to me all the time, specially with amateur singers.

    Hey Warren, great tips, as usual. In particular I appreciate another reminder about “randomness” in drums; you know, like a living, breathing, expressive drummer. I hear perpetual bitching about the “machine feel” of a lot of today’s music, and it never fails it’s from imbeciles who slave their work to a stinking grid and over-compressed drums lacking any semblance of dynamics or randomness. There! I’ve exposed my archaic mindset on the recording/mixing process and informed why my heroes are the likes of Messers Schmitt, Johns, Scott and of all Emerick whom I really miss.
