    I watched all kinda videos but your video is the best because you put it simple and dont explain with complicated mechanic words. Perfect. Barrel is the way to go with this...screws literally did nothing but limit. Others were moving shifters with screws which is totally not important for solving this issue

    Every other instructor begins with H&L screws (Park Tools included). You've solved a problem that seems incredibly problematic with unparalleled ease. I was working with a new bike so that should be taken into consideration by comment readers. The repair may be significantly more involved. Thank you for your help!

      I agree. Every time it happened, I kept disconnecting the cable and going through the HL adjustments again - and still I couldn't eliminate all chain rub. When you think about it logically, cable tension is an obvious factor!

    Very informative, again. Much better than that Park Tool guy!!
    My GT Aggressor’s chain is barely rubbing the cage when the big front gear, and when the small two on the cassette are engaged. When in the #2 front, and all gears on the cassette , it’s quiet.

      Thanks, Jeff! Remember cross chaining, most bikes will get chain rub which is normal. That's the extreme like when the chain is in the biggest front ring and smallest cog on the cassette. Or vice-versa.

    Great tutorials brother. Got a question for you. I've experienced on a personal bike of when you back pedal the chain will not remain on the cog selected therefore it falls off onto lower ones making it difficult to continue pedaling cause it will go back up the the one previously selected. Any tutorial or comment on this issue? Keep up the good work and kudos!

    • @BikeTeacher
      @BikeTeacher 5 років тому +1

      Thanks, Reyes, In some cases that may be normal, usually in a repair stand when the rear derailleur is on gear 1, the largest cog. Or if you are cross chaining or in the biggest ring in the front and smallest in the rear (or vice versa) this may happen. Another reason may be the freewheel hub may be spinning backward too slowly. If so it would not be able to keep up with the chain. Check this by spinning the cranks, remove your feet or hands to see if you get ghost spinning. Lack of tension in the chain, check the b screw. Chain too long. This would be a good video for me to make. Thanks for the feedback.

  • @cheungarrie123
    @cheungarrie123 6 років тому

    Vert inspiring video indeed, and straight-forward too. However, my problem is when I fixed the issue of rubbing on the outside of the cage (riding small gears in the back), rubbing occurs on the inside of the cage (riding large gears in the back). Does that mean the limit positions of the cage was set in a rather conservative way by my LBS preventing the chain falling off when shifting?

    • @cheungarrie123
      @cheungarrie123 6 років тому

      One more thing, it's quite rare but it did happen a few times that the chain fell off in between the rings when downshifting.

    • @BikeTeacher
      @BikeTeacher 6 років тому

      Sory for the late response, This would be considered "cross chaining". This will be at the extreme if you have three chainrings in the front. The chain line angle is too severe and in most cases noncomplimentary gearing. Your bike is saying it does not like it there. Very common for most bikes. This is one reason why today's bikes are now running two and one chainrings in the front and larger climbing gears in the rear.
      The limit screw is not the issue here, you may need to choose where you want the rub to occur, i.e. make your adjustment to where you spend the majority of the time. Some components are not going to run at 100% performance, Sometimes you will need to pick and choose and assist the drivetrain system. Thanks

    Hey! What's the minimum amount of thread I can leave on the barrel adjuster? I feel mines one screw away from completely coming away from the shifter...

    • @BikeTeacher
      @BikeTeacher 5 років тому

      That sounds about right. its good to be aware of that. Most people have no idea they are about to unthread completely. And rightly so, the threads are not visible. Some derailleurs call for a lot of tension, in that case, I would screw the barrel adjuster in all the way and reset the cable tension at the pinch bolt. Not necessarily in that order.

    Bike Teacher I ‘m having some issues with the front derailleur on my new bike. Tiagra 3x10. I’m having chain rub when i’m on 2x8, 2x9, 2x10, 3x8, 3x9, 3x10. Also when i’m shifting from middle to big chain ring, chain sometimes gets stuck beteeen inner cage and big ring before settlng in the big ring itself. Derailleur doesn’t move fully outboard where the H limit screw is, hence the chain rub. And i can’t adjust the barrel adjuster as it’s already tight even with just two full turns. I don’t know if the issue here is the fd itself, or the barrel adjuster needs to be reset coz it is already tight with just two turns counter clockwise.

    • @BikeTeacher
      @BikeTeacher 5 років тому

      A new bike may need some breaking in. The new housings and ferrule caps need to be seated with tension. You do this by shifting from one end to the other about 10 times, ignore the bad shifting your just braking it in for now. You may also tug or pull on the bare cable with a rag 10 times to seat the cable and housing. This will create slack in the cable, which is what you want. Then you may go back to the cable pinch bolt and loosen the cable. At this time reset the barrel adjuster to about the middle or more. Then pull tension on the cable with fingers only and retighten the cable pinch bolt. Try that

    • @leftyseel8658
      @leftyseel8658 5 років тому

      I checked the cable head, i pulled it out and back in again. Not sure if this is how it should be seated correctly, but that’s how it looks now with the cable pinch bolt tightened and on the smallest chain ring. Link to the photo below. Check if it is seated properly.

      If it won’t move, it could be stuck and you will need pliers to unstuck it. Or the adjuster has full exceeded its travel and is no longer able to engage and produce results. If that happen you would need to loosen the cable pinch bolt and re-engage ( screw in) the adjuster.

      The high limit screw may be to tight, not allowing the derailleur enough room to move freely. This is why the shifter feels stiff.Loosen the hight limit screw but only 1/16" to 1/8" at a time. Be patient and do a physical test ride test ride after each adjustment. Anticipate the derailleur throwing the chain off to the crank side if you over do the adjustment.

      It could be stuck from dirt or the housing leading in to the barrel adjuster is creating stress Roma bad or tight angle. Try to straighten the housing where it enters the barrel. Hold this straight while turning the barrel. Use pliers to Break the barrel free if need be.

    What if i dont have barrel adjuster for the fd?

    • @BikeTeacher

      You wounded to manipulate the cable tension T the pinch bolt. Pulling it tight(er) or leaving slight slack. Kinda hard but doable. Best thing to do is install a inline barrel adjuster. Minor surgery.

      Start from scratch, release cable tension and ensure the shifter is at #1.

    Wrong video? Very large barrel aduster or else just a very small person.

    Barrel adjuster fixed the rub on big chain. The problem with my vintage 2005 Shimano front derailleur (Mega 9) is that you can't pull on the cable with needle nose pliers and then tighten the allen key clamp because the cage blocks access. Terrible design!

      I avoid pliers at all cost. I find It’s not necessary unless in a inaccessible spot like yours. It may be time for a new longer cable.

    Bored and a waste of data
