  • This is it! The final film of the Scooby Renaissance!
    It's also the first video with my new equipment. While looking at early test footage shot by the new camera, my wife said I should buy makeup, too.
    This is why Midna is her avatar when I mention her in my videos, FYI.

    Cyber-Chase was part of this weird trend during the time that video games were becoming popular enough that studeos wanted stories about them, but no one actually writing, directing, or producing films or tv shows had any idea what they were, how they worked, or what programming on a computer even was. They had some wacky ideas of what VR was or how it worked.

    • @JoeGoesOver

      It reminds me of how annoying I always found one particular scene in the first 'Jurassic Park', a film I otherwise adore.
      Grant, Sattler and Malcolm are touring the lab and one of the scientists is wearing a sci-fi helmet and gloves and the narrator describes them as using VR to locate gaps in the gene sequencing. This always struck me as a nauseatingly obvious attempt to cram in a science trope that was popular at the time.
      A DNA sequence gap would be recognized as a missing letter in a molecule chain and not something a scientist would need to "move around in cyberspace".
      Thanks for watching, commenting, subscribing and triggering my irritation at a beloved movie!

    I think the craziest thing about the movie is how all the retro villains besides The Creeper were from the Scooby doo show?? Surely there’s no way those were the most iconic were they? I'd argue about something you said about the moon level; they may not have limited oxygen. Same with how NPCs can die by being shot in the leg as opposed to the torso or head, or how a character could glide normally but fly in challenge stages, the function has to be programmed in as so the action can happen. For all we know, the gang could've been in that level indefinitely

    • @BrandonSwinney-j2v
      @BrandonSwinney-j2v 10 днів тому +2

      yeah, it's not like air was something Eric would think he would have to code in, the moon level might've just had different textures and reduced gravity, like how the backyard level from the montage might just have everything in the level scaled up rather than having the gang actually be made smaller.

    • @JoeGoesOver
      @JoeGoesOver  4 дні тому +2

      That is true, but from the Gang's perspective, it should have felt like they were literally on the surface of the moon and Velma, at least, should have shown more concern because as far as she knew, oxygen was limited.
      So much of this video game was insanely lifelike, I wouldn't put it past Eric having programmed a ticking clock by way of losing your air supply after a given amount of time!

    The inconstancies regarding Phantom Virus's powers makes sense once you really think about it: Bill based his virus data-code on himself, that means the Virus has the same egocentric and baseball-loving personality as Bill. Spindly Johnny here is so full of himself that his overconfidence hinder his potential of being a actual threat. For example: He could very well use his powers to hijack and control Scooby's robot but decided not to for the sake of his own pride.

While Shaggy and Scooby Try to survive in the video game as the virus targets them.

      Actually, Ztyran, “Scooby-Doo: Night of 100 Frights” would probably be the first project to “bring back past villains”; not to mention, it isn’t the “first film” to do so, as “Scooby-Doo 2: Monsters Unleashed” became the first televised Scooby project to center around past villains; despite Scooby-Doo and the Cyber Chase doing that first, it was more of an afterthought.

      @robbiewalker2831 "Night of 100 frights" might be the first project, but I wouldn't count Scooby-Doo 2 for the same reason that I wouldn't count the monsters in this film, they constructs based on past villains. The one thing about Eric's video game that really bothers me (and an issue that also carries over to the real world movie tie-in game as well) is that it's based on Mystery Inc who are known for solving mysteries, and yet the game itself has literally nothing to do with mystery solving or even the paranormal. The game as shown in the movie is essentially just some sort of collect-a-thon platformer/sandbox game with level themes picked seemingly at random with no coherent theme; the final level is the only one that has anything even remotely related to the Scooby Gang and is also the only one that includes references to their past mysteries, which is insane to me since the game being based on their past mysteries was the premise that Eric gave when describing it originally. Even the last level is only slightly related to the gang and their mysteries since there still isn't a mystery to be solved! All of the monsters are real and are unable to be unmasked, so it's not really about solving a mystery and enemies like The Creeper in this level are essentially no different than the random and generic enemies seen in other levels. Eric seems like a really bad game dev and he essentially just made a clusterfuck of a game and slapped the names and faces of his friends onto it despite it actually having very little to do with them when viewed objectively, which is just so weird. Imagine if a friend said that they were going to make a game starring you but instead of the game being at all related to you or the things that you're known for or your interests, it's basically just a generic and basic platformer that's destined to be forgotten and dumped into the discount bin at the local game shop. I've always thought that it would have made more sense for the game Eric made to be more similar to the real life Scooby-Doo video games that came later during the PS2 era, like Night of 100 Frights for example, which were much more about solving mysteries and many of the levels even featuring iconic villains from the franchise.

    What I like the most about these renaissance Scooby Doo films. It’s how they aged up the gang. For they appear to be older in these movies, I’d guess more in their twenties.
    Which I like just because I think it was refreshing to see them as not just teenagers again. Like time had started to move on from being stuck in the Where Are You ? Time frame sort of thing. Plus these were cool films and well put together with more depth and realism than what had been done before. After this movie is where I believe it started to get goofy and more akin to what we were used to before these movies came out. As a kid these were my favourites and still are. Along with the og series. Cyber Chase is just a good movie, far fetched sure but still entertaining.

    • @JoeGoesOver
      @JoeGoesOver  14 днів тому +4

      Of course, the main danger of aging the Scooby Gang is the average life expectancy of a Great Dane.
      The Renaissance films were definitely a high water mark in the franchise. It's just a pity that the studio purportedly interfered a lot with this one (and the previous); otherwise would could have had a darker, more mature story here.
      Maybe then they might have had a discussion about the ethics of creating self-aware AI only to trap it inside a video game.

    34:33 If I recall correctly, the Professor says to boot up the game in demo mode to show the gang how the laser works. That's why he can retrieve the box of snacks immediately. However, needing to play through the whole game to get the gang out is still a massive design flaw on Eric's part.
    I think the idea of a sentient virus originating from a game that can manifest itself in the physical world was enough to carry the movie. The whole subplot of the laser beaming the gang into the game wasn't needed, especially considering most of it was just reduced to a montage.

    • @JoeGoesOver
      @JoeGoesOver  21 годину тому

      I'm not sure how "demo mode" could be any different from "regular" mode as they both involve firing the laser.

Though I guess the game didn't see a problem with there being 2 sets of player characters (the real and cyber gangs).

    Thanks for the shout-out, Joe! That’s Scooby-tastically nice of you!
    Oh, may I have an unusual question for you? How do you manage to keep making Scooby-Doo videos without UA-cam tagging them as "Content Made for Kids"? I ask because whenever I make a Jonny Quest review, I frequently run into this issue. I always appeal, but within minutes, my appeal gets rejected. Every single time! It’s incredibly frustrating, especially since my videos often include clips from R-rated horror movies, which are obviously not kid-friendly (also, what kid watches videos on obscure old cartoons in the first place?). The worst part is that once a video is tagged as "Made for Kids," the comment section is disabled, so there’s no room for discussion.
    I once made a video on innuendos in The Grim Adventures of Billy & Mandy, referencing things like f*tishes and gloryh*les, and UA-cam still flagged it as kid-oriented. I even re-uploaded it, only for it to be tagged again. I’m stuck in this weird middle ground. I don’t want to include n*dity or coarse language on purpose because "Adult Restricted Content" isn’t my goal either. But it really grinds my gears that UA-cam’s bots (or whoever) can’t distinguish between content meant for nostalgic adults and content for children.
    Anyway, thanks for being awesome! I’ve been watching you since you had just around 2,000 subscribers, and I really admire your work.

      Happy to do so! I appreciate your own shout out of my channel as well!
      I really wish I could help you with your UA-cam issue. Unfortunately, I have enough issues with my own stuff, particularly when it comes to content matching. Every upload is nerve-wracking for me as I await the dreaded red notification icon on my smartphone.
      I wouldn't mind the content match so much if they would list ALL sections of my upload that triggers it, rather than just the first one they find. This means I adjust my video to meet their demand, spend four hours encoding and another hour uploading and rendering, just to get another ding. Worse is when I get the green light, only to get hit with a match a few days later, after I already amassed views and comments which are deleted upon a re-upload.
      All I can suggest is if you use the "copy settings" from previous videos to make it easier to tag and label your new uploads, try not doing that and getting a fresh start. Perhaps there's a checkbox clicked somewhere that's triggering it?
      As unhelpful as they are, you might try sending a DM to UA-cam directly (presuming you haven't already).

    Thank you so much for another episode of this series! I never considered all the serious and grim implications of the various aspects of the story as a kid and it hits comepletely different now! Like nightmare fuel level of hitting different. I never realised how dangerous the laser and the digitalisation of the gang could be! Also, seeing how reckless and careless the proffessor was with the safety concerns in the lab makes me at least worried and at most furious. Like, I wonder how any of the people working here are still alive!
    Your ranking makes sense, even if the virus' desing scared me as a child and still makes me at least uneasy, I see why it isn't really scary.

    When you get to a pup named Scooby Doo, I think you should remember that the reason a lot of fans like is basically the reason you defended the be cool Scooby Doo but about two or three decades earlier the fact that it’s also one of the first shows to give Fred Daphne and Velma some real personality because that’s face it after watching the pre-scrappy shows I think you can see they didn’t have that much personality. In fact, even the original creators of Scooby Doo thought those three were boring and the last reason of a pup named Scooby Doo is liked one of the few Scooby media where the audience figuring out who the mastermind is actually written into the story. Heck, the theme song even says you can help us solve the crime. I know there’s a Scooby movie where Velma figures out who the mastermind is just because she’s a text writing font snob

      I know 'A Pup Named Scooby-Doo' has a LOT of fans, and this is going to sound hypocritical considering I made a video that basically said "Don't judge a series based on the animation", but I really, REALLY hate the animation for 'A Pup Named Scooby-Doo', almost to the point of it being an entire deal-breaker.
      You do make a good point and it's unfair of me to go into it with that mindset, but it's just sooooo harrrrrrrrd to dooooooo.
      Glen Kennedy is to animation what John Wayne Gacy is to home foundation work.

    Quick point:
    If Bill claimed that the baseball personality was derived from his game, he could claim that Eric’s game made the virus lethal, considering that many people had malicious intent when it comes to the gang.
    The lethality can come from the plans of Scooby villains, and the baseball personality can come from Bill’s with the diamond an attempt to frame Bill.

    I personally would love to see you cover the What’s New Scooby Doo era films as I like to call them. As much as I love Ghoul School and The Reluctant Werewolf, and as much as they fit the era you’re covering, I have been waiting so long for the What’s New Scooby Doo despite only being on this channel for just a few months since September at least (I think, I graduated from high school and I’m still waiting for that college application approval or the Publix job position I’ve been begging for so I’m currently living life like it’s summer vacation compared to my siblings. I lost track of time, I just remember that that it was several months before the news of Liam Payne’s death 😢). The movie I’m most excited to see you cover is Scooby Doo Where’s My Mummy?. I love that one-the song “Mummies Rags and Riches” is a personal favorite banger of mine. I also enjoy the film for the awesome twist (spoiler alert) that Velma was the monster all along. I also can’t wait to see you make a joke about the fact that the gang’s main ally, Amahl Ali Akbar or Triple A as he’s called, is voiced by Oded Fehr aka Ardith Bay from the Mummy trilogy featuring Brendan Fraser (one of my favorite movie trilogies ever). I think the biggest obstacle you’d have to face when covering Where’s My Mummy is the fact there’s not 1 but rather 3 villains all working separately and independently from each other (technically there’s 4 but Velma is one of the main characters and she’s working with one of them so she and Prince Omar are likely gonna be ranked together), which is a far cry from the usual two villains plotting. I took the time to think about everything I’ve learned from your videos to analyze each one of their plans, and I can confidently say that Omar and Velma’s scheme is not only the best of the three schemes, but technically they won. Not only was Omar the prince of Egypt (I have never seen the movie but it’s hard not to make a joke from that title) and thus likely to be exempt from legal consequence if caught, but he was also the person in charge and presumably the one who funded the expedition that uncovered Cleopatra’s tomb, which means he would most likely have a legal right to the treasure, especially since it was located in and had historical significance to his country and culture. Omar’s goal was to discourage greedy treasure hunters seeking the treasure of his country, which while not original since it’s the same plot as Penrod Stillwall from Haunted House Hang-Up is a very justifiable goal and thus would be the international country equivalent of defending your belongings from a would be robber. Not to mention that he had the help of Velma working with him instead of against him, which meant he had someone who was an expert in supernatural hauntings and thus knew the tricks of the trade in fooling people into believing the supernatural. Omar’s plan was also highly profitable, as we see that the treasure is vast, and while the scene of the tomb being destroyed would probably destroy some of it, the fact that the treasure is later washed up in the Nile river and easily recovered means the treasure would mostly survive and thus recoverable regardless of a tomb accident. The only two flaws I could see in his plan was 1) the Scooby gang’s surprise arrival, which considering they didn’t want to kill the gang meant they were stuck babysitting and preventing harm from happening to them while still doing their plan because they decided not to tell them about the plan, and 2) hiring Rock Rivers as the cameraman. It’s established earlier in the film that his show (which Fred is clearly a big fan of) was cancelled because he faked footage of supernatural events, so if the video of the mummy incident got out, they’d probably assume it was fake. Rivers is lucky this was before Twitter or current UA-cam, because the guy wouldn’t even last a day without faking backlash. Overall a not original but immensely rewarding and sorta justified scheme, had very few risks, and as Omar had the aid of a member of the Scooby gang’s working with him instead of against him, he had the advantage needed for his scheme to win, with the only obstacle being his poor choice in not involving the rest of the gang in his scheme not even for extra labor. As for the main villain herself Amelia Van Booch, she’s a unit all her own. Velma describes her as an archeologist and world class treasure hunter, while Omar emphasizes that she’s a treasure thief, which would imply that she resorts to questionable actions to get what she wants. She was willing to put everyone’s lives at risk for the treasure, even going so far as to steal, gas Fred and Daphne, and even trigger the tomb’s destruction, so props to her for her resolve to commit murder but also screw her for allowing greed to be her primary motivation. Then again, if she’s a world class thief, it may not even be greed that’s her primary motivation, because as anyone who’s seen Japan’s anime Lupin III (Lupin the third is the half-Japanese grandson of Arsene Lupin), and is likely already familiar with Selina Kyle aka Catwoman or even the Italian comic book villain Diabolik and his love interest Eva, can attest to, the world’s greatest thieves rarely stop at just greed as motivation for their crimes. Then we have the B villain of the movie Hotep (which I’m pretty sure is meant to be a reference to Imhotep from the Mummy trilogy) or as he’s actually known, Armand Granger. He basically just wants to run a cult, and like a hypocrite, he creates a robotic creature designed to resemble a giant scorpion and use Shaggy and Scooby in his scheme somehow (I will never get over how they both just conveniently appear to be the exact same as the legend the cult in question have about the reincarnation of a Scooby Doo themed Anubis and his human servant. Somehow I’m not convinced that Granger didn’t stalk them and secretly use their likeness to trick his cult) to run a cult while damming the Nile River. His scheme falls apart because not only does Triple A easily identify him (Triple A appears to be some sort of noble holistic police in this movie now that I think about it) which means he’s on the radar, but the cult quickly and smartly turn on him when he’s revealed as being the one damming the Nile River. Overall, if you choose not to cover the WNSD era movies, I understand, but I would greatly appreciate it..

    I think Scrappy heard how you feel about him and funny thing I actually like Scrappy's character. Also Fond of Misfortune Fred did it again but became what you called him this time around and maybe they were working under the assumption that they were human beings and a talking Great Dane that they had to play and beat the video game to get out unlock the Phantom Virus which is technically something that originally comes from cyber space and inanimate objects like let's say a real world box of Scooby Snacks and didn't want to risk pulling the gang out to soon just in case. Bill also could've given the Phantom Virus parts of both Eric and the Professor for good measure thus making it harder for it to be traced back to him. I think you should do the Red Shirt Shaggy movies next since this movie had a Shaggy in a red shirt in a way and it was mentioned that that was an outfit from the past with the exception of the shoes because Real Life Shaggy wore brown shoes with his red shirt outfit while Cyber wore the usual black shoes that Shaggy is known for either way I got off topic there but the Red Shirt Shaggy movies should be next because one appearing here in a way and it seems like a nice set up for it. By the way cool video.

    Scooby-Doo and the Cyber Chase was a hard DVD for me to get, in a reasonable price. For a long time, my nostalgia told me that it was a real good movie that I really liked from my childhood, and so I would frequently check online resale marketplaces for Scooby-Doo and the Cyber Chase. I could never find it for a good price, and it never came on any streaming service that I was subscribed to. Until one day I found it, I think it was at a Goodwill auction: in a bundle with some other Scooby media (Scooby-Doo and the Arabian Nights, and a couple books) After some vigorous bidding, I won it, and I soon got my Cyber Chase DVD I always wanted to add to my Scooby-collection.
    Then I rewatched it and it was quite disappointing. And the disc is also hard to rip into an mp4 format, so I can't store it as a digital copy as well. I'll always remember the Phantom Virus as what I thought as a real cool villain, and I'll always remember Cyber Chase as not being as good as I thought. At least now I can re-watch whenever I want. (Sort of, I just need to have the disc and a functioning disc reader)

      Back before streaming, I used to constantly rip DVDs into portable files with questionable success at times.
      Whatever protection 'Ice Age 2' had on it deserves to be used by the Pentagon to safeguard our nuclear codes, because I NEVER got that one to work properly!
      Anymore, if I need a digital copy of anything, I'll usually try a torrent site because it's more than likely going to be much better than what I could come up with ripping a Blu-ray or recording a streaming channel.

    Out of all the Mook films, this one is the one I know about the least. I always thought I was tolerant of sci-fi as a genre, mostly because I watched the entire Star Wars film saga, Star Trek Into Darkness, WALL-E, and The Fifth Element. Apparently though, that’s not the case, as I recently discovered that psychological horror is now one of my favorite genres. While a lot of factors like my own Tangled esque experiences and my nostalgia for Goosebumps got me to this point, I like to thank UA-camr Alex Bale for essentially contributing to my awakened love for horror. Who knew the guy responsible for arguably the most iconic SpongeBob theory channel on UA-cam could help turn someone into a horror fan? The choices of monsters for the final level is good ,but i feel kinda bad that Creeper is the only villain from the original series ,i would've swapped Jaguaro for someone more appropriate for the pier setting like the Ghost Clown or Charlie the robot ,even Space Kook would fit .

    About the radiation part, the most surprising part about all this is how Shaggy and Scooby are both still alive. Then again, this is the same duo that survived a full on wax shower back in Scooby Doo Where Are You, and somehow survived long enough to not burn into a crispy skinless chicken body like the Nazis back in Raiders Of The Lost Ark (I thought Donovan’s death in the Last Crusade was traumatizing, but the Lego Indiana Jones video game really undersold the horror of Raiders Of The Lost Ark) or even suffocate to death while in there like Ryan Reynolds in Buried (never saw the movie but the horror of being buried alive is not a pleasant experience, just ask everyone’s favorite unfortunate former Robin Jason Todd). Surviving radiation is the least impressive part of their overall power..

    Even though the Phantom Virus doesn't get any points in the scare factor, I still really like his design, he would fit perfectly as a boss in a 90's or early 2000 platformer. I wonder if that was the intention with his design, something more videogamey and less scary.

      It does look much like what a video game mid-boss might look like at the time, but let's not forget the bad guys in video games could still be terrifying.
      I saw the Cyber Demon from 'Doom' in my nightmares on more than one occasion!

      Hah! Thank you very much for saying so! I really appreciate the enthusiasm!
      I've always had a hell of a time through the years when it comes to praise, whether giving it or receiving it.
      When giving it, I'm always afraid I'll come across as insincere and when receiving it, I'm always afraid the person is just being nice.
      I think a part of growing up is just shutting up and accepting the nice sentiments!
      Thank you for them and for watching and subscribing!

    This was my least favourite of the four Mook films, but I applaud them for embracing technology and trying to remain relevant in a new era. They were great palate cleansers amid the older episodes. I’m conflicted as to whether I would love to see you continue this iteration of the Scooby gang when they head to Mexico and Australia or if it would be great to pivot to the red shirt Shaggy and maintain a supernatural element. Seems like you have a multitude of choices 😀. I look forward to seeing more videos and how you manage to write yourself out of that corner…lol
