I live in North Jersey and have traveled on this route between Basking Ridge, NJ and Port Chester, NY. Most of the time, I traveled on the original Tappan Zee Bridge to what used to be Marymount College in Tarrytown from 1989 to 1993. I miss the old bridge but think the new one is beautiful, too. This video brings back fond memories!
I get nostalgia going this route as I used to live in New Jersey with my family in around 1996 to 1998. Brings back a lot of good memories travelling down interstate 287
Yeah, who'd wanna travel down NJ/NY Route 440 using the Outerbridge Crossing or the Turnpike to Exit 13 to travel on Interstate 278 (Staten Island Expressway) and cross the Goethals & Verrazano Narrows Bridges to travel through the congestive expressways in Brooklyn and Queens anyway? The Port Authority charges too much.
In my opinion, they should reroute Interstate 87 over I-287 in New Jersey and have I-287 remain only in New York. The Major Deegan Expressway should then be resigned as Interstate 187. I-87 could then be consigned with I-95 over the New Jersey Turnpike then be signed by itself over the southern portion of the NJ Turnpike. Then co-sign it with I-95 again, then sign Delaware Highway 1 as I-87. Extend it southwards to the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel. Rebuild that then connect Northern I-87 to Southern I-87 and you have a continuous highway from Raleigh Durham NC to the Canadian border.
Just FYI, in case you didn't know, when you get to the US 9 exit you will see the exit signs with the control cities Tarrytown and Sleepy Hollow. Yes, that is the Sleepy Hollow of the Headless Horseman fame. For many years it was called North Tarrytown. They changed it in 1996. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sleepy_Hollow,_New_York
I've driven the northern half of this once, going to and from Wisconsin from Connecticut for my brother's graduation. My westbound experience was a slow, traffic-filled one until I made the southern turn, which was a suprise to me at 2 PM on a Thursday haha. I remember remarking that there was a mall on the southern side of the Interstate that was so damn big... I have never seen a shopping mall that large. The way back occurred at like 4 in the morning. It was astonishing the amount of light pollution NYC and its surrounding areas cause. Going over the Tappan zee you could juuuuuuuuuuust barely make out the skyline lights of Manhattan at the mouth of the Hudson. I was 20 hours into the drive and a very sleepy me was astonished by this. It's the closest I've ever been to New York City.
I remember to going to Boston Massachusetts for a while and whole planet, I think that you and hope was going on the field trip to New England. That's awesome. 😊
For all the truckers that don’t want to utilize the Goethals/Outerbridge/Verrazano Narrows crossings through Staten Island, Brooklyn, Queens and the Bronx towards Interstates 87 and 95 northbound, this is the highway alternative.
I *LOVE* this video, although I don't like the ads breaking into it every few minutes or so. I miss taking I-287 with my dad. 😢😢 Edit: It's too bad the truck was blocking my view of my favorite exit - 22B: Bedminster, Netcong. But, other than that, I stand by my original comment above.
the way to go when the GW bridge is red on google maps. i feel like i am riding along with you based on the number of decades i've driven on this road - mostly between the Garden State Parkway and I-80
40:33 - 40:39 This was the original I-287 terminus until around late 1993, when the last section between U.S. Route 202 and the NY State Thruway (I-87) finally opened.
Mike, glad to see you dodged that idiot (probably on the phone!) sliding into you lane! And that white Audi after the 87/287 spit was really zipping along.
The fact that you listed it as the Tappan Zee Bridge instantly earns you my respect.
I love the Autumn colors and mountains. NJ is a beautiful state.👍🏾
I remember going I 287 from my grandparents house on Staten Island to my grand Aunt and Uncle's place in Wharton NJ back in the 70s and early 80s..
THIS IS THE ROAD I USE EVERY DAY!!!!
what is best lunch restaurants close to route 287 in NJ
@@rehconcepts935the area by Morristown has a lot of restaurants, great traditional New Jersey town!
I use I-81 to bypass everything when I go to NJ from NC

I still think it’s better to bypass the whole area on much more beautiful I-81 on long distances trips.
I believe your the first youtuber to get a full length version of Interstate 287 in New Jersey, nice.
I love it. 440 South becomes 287 North, and it's actually heading West.

Looking forward to this video
Nice ride along interstate 287

It’s really the NYC “by-pass” since it’s a half circle that by-passes NYC proper.

My favorite segment of I-287 is between I-78 and the South Street/Madison Avenue interchange in Morristown, NJ.
Lots of nice scenery on that segment
@@MileageMikeTravels Can I-287 use to be in Connecticut for sure?

That southbound traffic jam in Jersey was brutal!
Brutal traffic jams are quite normal on I-287. I got stuck in plenty of them.
that was a nice ride, thnx for filming ✌
No problem 👍
Even though it does run concurrent with I-87 in NY for a bit, it begins and ends at I-95. I wonder why it was not numbered as I-x95.
That part bothered me as of recently 😂

Red from 6am unitl 2am M-F then 8:30am until 2am S and S

Thank you for saying Tappan Zee Br instead of the other name that literally nobody voted on 👍
What states does this route 287 go through?
New Jersey and New York
4:48 is that an old Circuit City store?
Mike, glad to see you dodged that idiot (probably on the phone!) sliding into you lane! And that white Audi after the 87/287 spit was really zipping along.
Ok,but why not use I-81 to bypass the whole I-95 mess? Use US 17 from Fredericksburg Va to Winchester Va than I 78,I-80 or I 84 to cut back east.
1:02:00 That was a close one.
@Toyota RAV4 Hybrid XSE Is I-287 in Connecticut?
@@kennypalermo9071 I-287 ends in Port Chester, NY, a couple of miles shy of the Connecticut border...
@@MartyGlenn72 We got it!
@@MartyGlenn72 Are we doing I-495 in NYC sometime?
@@kennypalermo9071 I guess you’ll have to ask Mileage Mike
I didn't know there was such beltway.
@Tim, the Ultimate Ash Ketchum Fan 1999: " if you didn't know, well now you know" - German in Venice (Mike H.)
@Jim Allen Okay.
It's not really a beltway, but a bypass around a segment of I-95.
Is there another route 287 any where else in the USA?
Not an interstate one.
40:54 Something happens.
And you get a wall of semis. 🤠
31:56 .... nasty rotted road right there ... what was the screechy noise under your car?
is this a TollWay at any point?
They charge you east bound to cross the Hudson over the new Tappen Zee Bridge.
Worst tons of bumps and potholes. Drive left lane its best in shape 3 of lanes.
Me too
It's not TAPPAN ZEE BRIDGE which was replaced with MARIO M CUOMO BRIDGE!!!
Hey Fredo, it's the Tappan Zee Bridge period
