LYRICS:
Lost in the sky
Clouds roll by and I roll with them
Arrows fly
Seas increase and then fall again
This world is spinning around me
This world is spinning without me
Every day sends future to past
Every breath leaves one less to my last
Watch the sparrow falling
Gives new meaning to it all
If not today nor yet tomorrow then some other day
I'll take seven lives for one
And then my only father's son
As sure as I ever did love him
I am not afraid
This world is spinning around me
The whole world keeps spinning around me
All life is future to past
Every breath leaves me one less to my last
Pull me under Pull me under
Pull me under I'm not afraid
All that I feel is honor and spite
All I can do is to set it right
Dust fills my eyes
Clouds roll by and I roll with them
Centuries cry
Orders fly and I fall again
This world is spinning inside me
The whole world is spinning inside of me
Every day sends future to past
Every step brings me closer to my last
Pull me under Pull me under
Pull me under I'm not afraid
Living my life too much in the sun
Only until your will is done
'Oh that this too solid flesh would melt.'

My 1st Dream Theater song. Been a fan since.
Dinè狼 Draven same here man! I bought Images and Words on cassette because I thought the cover was cool, not really knowing what to expect. By the time this song was over, my walnut-sized brain was blown and I had a new favorite band. 26 years or so later, that feeling still hits me every time I listen to this song.
I heard this song in December on the radio in 1992 I was injected with "The Theater" venom too.

one of the greatest metal songs ever
not even in dream theaters top 15 but okay
Prog-metal is an acquired taste. Most metal fans can't even name 5 Dream Theater songs let alone 15, but most know PMU. Why? Because it sounds much closer to the mainstream metal of that era than much of their catalog. This is also why most Dream Theater fans diss the song -- it sounds too mainstream. For those who listen to mainstream, they likely consider PMU their favorite even after sampling the rest of their music.
What can be their best song in your opinion?
Just to be clear, for me A change of season ad Octavarium are top, panic attack and count little lover but good too, through her eyes I like, for some reason, PMU is fine for me, nad fro soem others i find them good but i don`t see many "strong unforgettable songs".
Prog fans are whiny little bitches
Allen Newbauer it really is a masterpiece
One of the greatest metal songs ever written.
Listening to it after 20 years!
I opened for these guys solo acoustic at McGuffy's in Dayton Oh on the Images and Words Tour in 1992. To this day I can't believe I pulled that one off. Had a few drinks with Petrucci and Portnoy after the show and they were GREAT dudes!
I used to write for a music magazine in new York in '92 and met john pettruci in a club when he was a clean shaven kid..one of the nicest guys next to paul gilbert I've ever met..a real person..paul gilbert will have you in stitches.hes hysterical

I just learned about these guys last night. I'm 54 years old so maybe I've been living on another planet. I like all 5 songs I've listened to so far.
David S I’ve been a huge fan since day 1. They have a lot of material. I’m 54 also and I remember vividly how I became a huge fan. My brother gave me “Images & Words” CD to record on a cassette tape back in 93 for his buddy and I happen to be listening to Metropolis and was just completely blown away! I saw them like 6 or 7 times in concert and got to meet the band back stage in 07. Really down to earth guys. Really missing Portnoy. Mangini is a good drummer but I lost interest when he left the band. The albums that you need to listen to are octavarium, six degrees of inner turbulence, black clouds & silver linings, systematic chaos, and especially scenes from a memory. All I can say is WOW!
I don't care for sound of the drums, too flat not fat and deep like Ludwig's
Angra, edguy, etc.
@@m42037Mike Portnoy (the drummer) was never happy with the drum sound on this record especially the snare because a triggered sample was used instead of the actual dynamics of his real snare
@@chrissmith3668the whole kit sounds triggered on the entire album, a simple eq on the snare sample would be enough to make it sound better, but at the same time that's the sound we've heard so many years and it honestly fits quite nice the vibe

It's hard to believe it will be 28 years this year since I first heard this song. I was in our car about to enter a nice restaurant when I heard this. I was instantly enthralled. I waited until the end hoping they would tell who it was, they did and the next day bought the album. They have been my favorite band ever since. Love these guys.

This looks like when I saw them at a small club in Atlanta. They played as Liquid Tension, and there was only 200 people there. They played for almost 6 hours. 40 minute portnoy drum solo. I'll never forget it. The stage was 12 inches tall. I was only 2 people from the stage, and thr guy in front of me was the camera man. Greatest show of my entire life, and I'm 50. I've been listening to these guys for 8 whole months now (almost 9) and this was the first ever song I listened to. I was mainly a Rush fan and I was really into the Test for Echo album but I wanted to listen to something heavier so I looked up bands similar to Rush and found these guys. While I was listening to the start of it I thought "the singer's probably going to come out and start screaming like in a death metal song" but I was really surprised when I heard LaBrie's voice is actually high-pitched. I bought the Images & Words album and listened to it for like a week before moving on to "Awake." After hearing "Awake" I was really convinced that I loved this band. Awake is still my favorite album to this day (my second is Scenes from a Memory). A few days ago I went to my first Dream Theater concert and they rocked OUT! Just thought's I'd reminisce on how I got into Dream Theater :)
I think most of these guys in Dream Theater are Julliard grads.
Anthony C THEYRE A GREAT BAND FROM THE EARLY 90'S GOOD SHIT IN MY OPINION 😈💔💋
I think mike went to Berkley
Right on brother!
A few things.
One: Anthony, Awake and SFAM are my favorites too! Awake is a fantastic album.
Two: To the others, Mike and both of the Johns went to Berklee. That is where they met each other. However, they dropped out before going into their second year to focus on their band.
I feel like this song was ahead of it’s time and it still is a masterpiece to this day. It’s so good to have Mike Portnoy back🔥🤘🏻
No kidding, can you believe that shit! It was about time. I never saw them again after he left and I can't stand the singer. The last show I went to I saw the singer giving Mike a mean mad face. It was obvious they didn't like each other.
Way ahead of their time
The intro is really interesting to hear compared to the non-edited version of the song. They must have cut at least half of it?
Jonatan OTW the original version is more than 3' longer (not just because of the intro xD)
Yeah, they cut it a little, and it sounds better to me. The original intro is too long.
They have to shorten it for mainstream audiences who have short attention spans lol
More than for modern audiences, they shortened it for radio play. It's hard to get an 8 minute song on radio, you know?
totally disagree, they cut most of the part, totally castrated the song, ceasing the good build up
How come I never hear this song on classic rock radio? This song is a classic in my opinion and I never get tired of listening to it.
@@mr.echo24 yeah but they still play metallica and maiden on classic rock stations
@@dumbguy5157 true, I guess they can really play anything there except death and black metal then

True, while technique wise they are one of the best. When it comes to song writing it bores me.
@@youreokayboah2128I agree with this comment. A very technically skilled band, but song composition was their big weak point overall. I’ve never been a fan of that 80’s metal whiny style of vocals either similar to Iron Maiden on any band

It's both a biblical and Hamlet reference.
@stevenbrown7873 Thanks, yeah, I looked up the lyrics & the comments were saying "It's based on Hamlet." But I'm a major theology geek and I picked up on the Biblical themes right away. I think I want this played at my funeral.
This band will probably be one of my new favorites ...
So crazy to think this song was made before I was even born. For me it's a lifetime ago (I'm 24 now). So excited to see them for the first time this month with my husband.
1992 I was 20yrs old in college when this song hit MTV and got big. However by that time most rock/metal bands and music was phasing out of our culture and rap/hip hop was taking over. They never hit it quite as big as they would have had this song come in let's say mid/late 80s when rock ruled the world. I really really feel for you young folks, especially if you're white and into rock. It's a hip hop world nowadays. But at least you have the Internet to look back and see how good my genX had it.
Nice🎉
It's funny to see a guy that sings like him wearing a Napalm Death shirt. In the early to mid '90s there was a local radio show that came on Sunday nights. It was called Welcome to the Nineties and then Radio Prozac, because '90s. They mainly played stuff like Minor Threat, The Smiths, Curve, Ministry and the like. One night they played this song and it stuck with me ever since. I'm not really a Dream Theater fan but this is a pretty dope song and I'm glad I heard it all those years ago.
I remember that back then I saw photographs of Barney from Napalm Death wearing a Dream Theater shirt (maybe even in a music video?). So maybe they did a little trade.
Barney apparently used to review Prog Metal albums under a pseudonym, so appreciates the genre. I don’t think it’s as unusual as people might think for bands to be fans of music very different to what they themselves play
@@dannycheesums Not at all. Most great musicians are great because they’re not narrow-minded boneheads who listen to a single genre or sub-genre of music.
ikr. Grind and prog are like polar opposites
“Because 90s” ? “Pretty dope”? Lmao
For some weird reason, this band slipped under my radar. I used to be a big Queensryche fan, and this group seems to have some of that flavor.

There's a whole genre of it. Check out Conception.
0:13 - Though accidental, that bit with the candles, book, and watch gives me heavy Final Fantasy VI vibes, and I love it.
First heard this when I was 13 in fall of 1993, first day of middle school sharing Koss 'phones with a buddy's Walkman. I was so blown away that same day I went to Ameoba Records and picked up the Images and Words cassette, along with When Dream and Day Unite. That night I listened to the whole record, and loved Ytse Jam. Since then I've been a fan for life.
Last time I saw Dream Theatre live was in Zurich where I was working as a doctor because I couldn't afford to do that and be a single mother in Germany.
They were great live and will always be a part of my heart ❤️
