The story Nalacharitham is written by Unnai Warrier. It is the romantic story of unlimited love between Nala and Damayanthi. The story is such a big one that it is designed to be performed in four nights. The first day is till the marriage of Nala and Damayanthi. The second day is till Damayanthi reaches her father's palace. The third day is till Nala reaches Damayanthi's palace. The fourth and the final day is till Nala gets back to his kingdom.
The substance of the story of Nala and Damayanathi is depicted in Mahabharatha in Chapters 52 to 79 in Vanaparvam as told by sage Brihadaswan to Dharmaputhra to exemplify the unfortunate turn of events that might take place in the lives of great men and how such things bring them greater glory and prosperity. In 18th century, Unnai Warrier structured the contents of the story as Nalacharitham aattakkatha to suit the art-form Kathakali, making it more dramatic and full of action. This version he made is so long that it had to be divided into four parts I, II, III and IV day because each part needed a full night to enact the story. Nalacharitham is considered the most romantic work of art constructed on the classical basement of Kathakali.
