    good review, though I'd argue that the 'strom is not really designed to be a Versys competitor... The 'strom is, as he highlights towards the end, a 'go anywhere' bike. With the right rider and the right feet, she'll go off-road happily as a tourer. She's not a trail bike, but she IS an all-purpose tourer. Great for camping trips, particularly solo with a baggage load- 650 has enough power to carry the weight (unless you don't know how to pack!) yet small enough that if you do manage to drop her you're not struggling to pick her up again...
    Versys is DEFINITELY superior if you're a metro only rider. Get down in some of the shitty roads in Aus (especially if you wind up on dirt) though and you'll be glad to have the strom.
    Beak is silly though.

    Been riding for over 40 years on many bikes. I'm on my third 'Strom ('09, '12 and now the '15 XT). I only put 70 000 kms then trade them in, so I can't speak for their long term reliability. I can say for both everyday use and most road travel, they are tremendous bikes for the dollar. I rode my '12 from the tundra of Canada to El Salvador return, not one problem. I used to ride Beemers and yes, in some ways, the BMW is a better bike - but not in the ways that matter to me. My only advice is that you may not need a new one, there are many for sale with less than 50K all farkled up and ready to go - why waste money? 'Stroms are a good only bike, and nearly a perfect second bike. Oh yeah, and this review is right on the money too!

    65 mpg avg no problem, drops to 60mpg if ridden fairly hard, great do it all go anywhere bike, best value secondhand bike you can buy. ultra reliable too, just change the oil regularly.

    I like them BOTH, and may even get the new Versys to go with my DL650, but They Are not the same rider demographic, close in some respects true :) the versys is a street bike that period can go on a dirt road about like any standard bike, the DL650 is more able. Do not like the new bird beak, or Road Runner version of the V-Strom / DL, would take the older standard look any day, but it is growing on me ..? Ducks have rounder at least most of the bills, not pointed..lol Why does this post act so weird ??? BTW good job..yl

    Recently bought myself one and taking delivery of it when I pass my A2 license on the 6th of July. Fully kitted out in blue and I can't wait, considered the Versys and other so called rivals but no other manufacturer in my range (adv touring) was offering 0% apr.. Or even close!
    I will very much be taking this off-road, not toooo serious.. Depending on how confident I get but definitely local byways and greenlanes :)
    And you guys didn't test its off-road ability, yet compared it to a 110% road orientated bike like the Versys? Seems unfair, maybe you don't see the appeal of off-road riding but for those of us that aren't afraid of getting our bikes dirty it's one of the best feelings!
    I have done a few odd bits off-road here and there on private land and recently discovered some excellent local byways (Dorking) and I've got the bug - and I've done these on my Honda Varadero 125, with low ground clearance, road tyres, and 17" wheels, but I've still had some of the best riding doing it, so a bike with trail tyres, bigger front wheel and a better geometry will be even more confidence inspiring.
    And every single review you read of my Varadero says its "adventure styled" and that "no one will ever take it off-road" - which is only because the reviewer hasn't actually experienced it and bothered to try it out.
    Anyway, I've come to expect that reviews of bikes are always going to be biased, especially coming from a road tester who rides every type of bike and who will try and compare it to other bikes which aren't even in the same category.

      What is the 0%apr ?

    • @scotwilson4169
      @scotwilson4169 9 років тому +1

      Annual Percentage Rate is what it stands for.. I think, but basically it means I don't pay any interest on it. And the contract hasn't got any milage limitations or anything like that,
      I paid my deposit (£500)
      Then they take £500 off the value of the bike and divide that by the number of months of my contract.

    • @W3TFART
      @W3TFART 9 років тому

      +Scot Wilson thanks we dont have that option over here in aus currently about 10% intrest rate

    It’s a great bike, but can you tell me why the stock exhaust is so big, heavy & ugly. Its a very good adventure bike who is alone in a large price range; but Suzuki need to design a new front nose & a new head led lights as its so ugly & a new smaller stock exhaust would also be awesome. Common Suzuki: please do those changes, those improvements & i will highly consider an upgraded, improved, modified V-Strom 650 XT 2020 to upgrade my CB500X 2017. An aluminium bash plate would also be better then the actual plastic one.

    I love the v-stroms, but they should sack the designer of the bike and get someone who can make it look nice.

    Great review!
    So much better than the typical american style review i.e. read the press kit out loud

  • @brandywell44
    @brandywell44 8 років тому +3

    The real story here is that this great bike is £1,046 less in France which is just over the English Channel. Exact same bike with taxes included. The commercial decision, and thats all it is, to hike prices as soon as a bike hits the UK is rampant among UK bike importers.
    If you want to pay overprice then thats youre burden, but be warned depreciation will be heavy as the general second hand market is less controlled by importers. Make a stand and visit your dealer and ask them why? A google search for example Suzuki bikes France and using a currency converter like xe.com will back my statement.

      This bike is around $9500 CDN... which is under 5k GBP. I don't know why they're so much more expensive there (there being the UK... I'm in Canada).

    • @brandywell44
      @brandywell44 8 років тому

      Its market forces. In our UK ignorance we pay what is asked. Most UK people dont undrestand how UK prices are inflated, just because people stand for it.

    Good review style. Choosing a bike is always tricky when comparing price, capability, availability etc.
    I was going fir a versys right up to the moment that I saw a Strom for sale that was like Goldilocks. I.e. Just right.

    crap review. In a bike review I want to see the bike. not a guy chatting in a studio.
    He says the wee strom is ok for light off road.....check out the Australian videos of this bike and they smash this bike over some serious trails.
    so its a marmite bike. i for one love it.

    I owe one and thought it was a good summary of the bike. It does a lot and its not expensive. You can push it a bit, and still have fun, with the bonus of a bit of off road, depending on you skill level. good review

    I'm 6,1" and this bike feels too big even for me! If you want to ride it on open highways and do mostly long distance commuting or touring it is perfect, for everything else there are better bikes out there!
    In and around town Honda NC700x/750x is a better bike. For going on the twisty roads Versys 650 is better.
