    Really enjoy your videos on vcr repair and revival. Quick question, I have a Sony NICAM vcr which plays a tape for a good 5 mins but then just stops. I’ve check with the top open and can’t see any tape slack or nothing that suggests that the reels have stopped, the player just stops. Been scratching my head trying to diagnose so am wondering if you might have any ideas? Everything else works fine except that I have noticed that FF is quite slow, REW starts slow but then speeds up.

    I have one of these. Power comes on, loads tape but just black and white vertical lines while playing. Also interesting is this machine might be affected by Y2k that many were afraid of as the time and date cannot be set.

      Nothing was affected by y2k except my little casio vc1 or whatever the model was calculator with calendar. It still works but the day of the week and leap years are wrong.

    Hey have you ever worked on synthesizers before?
    Would be neat to see something like that!
    I am currently working on fixing up a roland d550 I was given not working and it is quite a different experience being able to get something like this working!
    The only thing with synths is it requires a lot of research and manual digging for diag codes, enitializing memory, function menues etc but it is a lot of fun.

      I don't really think it sounds any better or worse. for voice stereo sound doesn't really matter. i know one think i don't like is when people put something on youtube and it only comes out of one speaker. they are probably using a mono camcorder or vcr and should use a y adapter to combine the left & right audio channels when transferring to PC

      The mic on my older camera actually sounds better. Both my FDRAX33 and fdrax100 have more natural sound stereo microphones. The one I am using now (because it has a 20x lens and allows for good close up without having to get the camera right in close) is a Sony FDRAX53 and the stereo sound stage is much wider so as I move around the effect is greater. To my seasoned ears it gives greater depth and I can literally picture where I am in relation to the camera.

    I don't have a problem with the stereo mike, but what if you not mix down to mono, but select one of the stereo channels and make it a mono channel? This should avoid the phase cancelling issue. I don't know if there's an option for it in your editing software, but I guess you can set the balance to one extreme and select the output format to mono audio. But then the whole video would be mono. I usually don't like if people using the built-in camera mike for voice recording in a generic room with no acoustic treatment, but the way you do it, with the camera only a few inches above your head it doesn't sound too bad (one exception is the music recorded through the shop speakers, the acoustics really messes it up). Your voice would be better in mono (it is better when you do the occasional voiceovers, which is mono), but then all the noises would be mono too, I think it's better the way you do it now. 90% of the time I watch your videos (and everything) with headphones, and it's really good that the noises are in stereo.

      considering I have been in the archiving business since 1985 first doing telecine work for 8mn super 8 and 16mm for 3 retail shops and doing international video conversions i wore out both an ag1970 an ag1980 and 2 agw1 multi system. I have 2 broken ag1970 currently and agw1. All beyond repair because those ceramic modules that have surface mount caps on them have leaked and eaten away the traces. I can't tell you how many hours I put on then but I wore out 3 upper drums so yea they had tons of hours. I'm currently using an svo2000 which is the industrial version of the r1000 and it is flawless. I've probably done 1000 tapes on that one in the past 2 years. Right now i have 8mm tapes going to DVD. Yes many clients want DVD copies as well as digital files and my setup I can do both at the same time. I go though about 100 discs a month. Can handle any format, VHS, svhs, betamax, betacam SP, 8mm, hi8, digital 8, mini DV, hdv, full size DV, betacam SX, 3/4" umatic 8mm and super 8 film as well as pal and secam VHS svhs and pal 8mm / hi8 digital 8 and pal mini dv and hdv. I think I have all the formats covered. I found the AG series VCRs from pabaasonic to be overpriced junk and I bought all mine brand new. They didn't last.

    i can't believe what people are selling these for on ebay now 150 for a broken one 350 and up for working. i got this one off a guy on ebay for 50 bucks a few years back he sold it not working but when i got it worked fine. about the only real issue was the front right foot was missing and the odd time u put a tape in it wouldn't load.

      Super VHS. They go for big bucks because if you recorded your home videos in svhs you need a svhs deck to play the tapes. Standard VHS decks go for 20 to 30 but svhs much more and some go for ridiculous amounts. 8mm and hi8 gear also commands high dollars and betamax even higher.

      It's not except for those that have family tapes recorded on these obsolete formats they are wanting to archive. Formats such as high eight at super VHS are getting harder to find and betamax even harder. As working machines become fewer and farther between the price goes up, it's called supply and demand. If someone has just a couple tapes they might send them out and pay 20 bucks to get them digitized but if someone's got a couple hundred tapes well then it becomes more cost efficient to buy a machine and do it their self. I have sold a couple of old betamac machines for over 500.00. Now you might call me a crook, that's your opinion, I didn't force someone to spend that kind of money but I had a machine that I didn't need but didn't really particularly want to sell it because it's always good to have a spare but somebody wanted it more than me and they offered me what they thought it was worth and I let it go. I was happy to get rid of something that I didn't pay anything for and the person that bought it was happy because they got a working machine to transfer their old beta tapes and then I'm sure they sold it and got easiest much as they paid for it.

    I use isopropanol to clean contacts. The end result is not that shiny but the cost of Deoxit here is sky-high.

    • @12voltvids
      @12voltvids  3 роки тому +2

      Ipa won't protect the contacts as it evaporates and oxygen will start doing what oxygen does to metal contacts. Firming silver oxide or copper oxide. A cleaner like deoxit or nutrol leaves being an oil based film that lubricated the contacts and keeps that pesky oxygen away.
