The Problem with Farmed Salmon | Global 3000

- Aquaculture-grown fish and seafood is becoming increasingly common. Worldwide, more fish than cattle are farmed. But the booming fish industry is causing environmental problems. Medications, pesticides and parasites are escaping from open-water farms and contaminating the ecosystem.
Scientists and environmental activists are sounding the alarm for the unique, UNESCO-protected ecosystem of Vancouver Island, which contains one of the world largest concentrations of wild salmon.

Without these farmed salmon, the wild one will be gone soon.
I wish the super market would label the farmed fish!
I think we should start to label them clearly ourselves?
They do
Where do u live that they don't label it?🤔
They do, but there is no legal requirement for that in the US. Our restaurants are under no obligation to list fish sources either. They claim wild but do not have to prove it. I'm fine with that as long it is not an Asian import.
Here in Los Angeles they sometimes do.
I’m doing the best I could as an indigenous Fijian on my tropical forest (2,000 acres) , by banning all fishing (wild prawns etc etc) .
The “wild “ ones must be protected !
Thank you for sharing this video .
I have a lot of respect for this woman.flyfishing is my life, and I'm really worried.
PS :Sorry for my bad englisch.
A closed-loop aquaponic system built on land to completely separate the farm fish from any surrounding waterways can fix this.
Benefits:
• Stops any fish waste, chemical or disease from flowing into nature.
• Plants act as a filter and purify the water, greatly minimising any waste generated.
• Aquaponics is the science of creating a well-balanced ecosystem for fish and plants to thrive and stay healthy. Reducing the chance of a disease outbreak by bad water quality.
• Land-based indoor fish tanks are made much more solid than net pens. The risk of failure is low and even if the tank is breached, nothing can make their way into nature.
• Plants grown in the system provide another valuable food source for the community.
• Plants grown in aquaponics use up to 90% less water than conventional farms.
Price, price, price. You people forget that.
Aquatic agriculture?
At the time you posted this informed comment, US catfish farms were (and still are) thriving and offering US farmed fish for as little as $2.50/lb USD. I eat 40 pounds of US farmed catfish every year. They use vegetarian feeds with a little otherwise wasted amimal protein content. We have trout farms too. Also, the 30 year long ordeal to get the first GMO salmon was finally getting approval. In 2022 the first full scale AquaBounty salmon farm is in production and meeting a sustainable business model with expansion on the horizon. This is a totally land bound and sealed system of farming with low water usage requirements. It involves *none* of the negatives claimed in the video.
Well, that lady said it right "the consumer is the only one who can control this". That's food for people, and if people will finally stop eating food, then this will stop. We eat animals, that's what we do.
You missed the point
@@Mungobohne1 consumer still in control, we still eat that stuff. I don't see how this changed after 3 years :)
@@Brainiaccccc again you missed the point lmao we do agree It won’t stop but it’s the fact that there are better solutions to protect the natural environment from this. Such as they were explaining it’s the fact that the farm fish are giving and might cause eruption in the environment so what they were talking about it a better solution to that to help the environment. That’s all lmao
@@Brainiaccccc she’s saying as in only us the consumers can make the diffrence by giving rise to the situation and for example telling them “hey find a better solution instead of farming the fish that way”
And technically human race could survive without eating meat so your comment of if people will finally stop eating food, it will stop. Isn’t right cause well we’re omnivores 😂 but as long as people exist people will keep eating meat i do agree. But if people had to like were forced to we could
Thank you DW for informative videos such as this. Please continue to provide valuable content.
This 9 year old video is by DW, an outlet known for many biased stories. It falsely slams GMO crop science as well. This was posted at the peak of the controversy/war about farmed vs. fished salmon and it got nasty, expecially with the BC fishermen who pushed all kinds of nasty conspiracy theories. Since then, the industry has answered to the concerns about feeding farmed fish wth wild seafood sources and the ultimate most sustainable fish farm is going strong, the first GMO salmon, AquaBounty. Feed pellets are now being made with mostly grains and less or no fish meal content. Careful tending of fish farms has reduced their impacts on the sea floor. No legitimacy or weight is possible by counting the number of negative vs. positive videos about farmed fish. UA-cam has no enforced standards for honesty, it only responds to public outrage or pissed off politicians.

Moral of the video: Just leave the fish alone!

Consumer: Yeah I would like to have clean fish, but you know what I also like? AFFORDABLE fish.
1- These high tech farms need lots of capital and investment. Only the rich would be able to do it, cutting the competition and potential new farms in 80%
2- High investment and low competition means RAISE in prices.
I like fish, but I enjoy more giving as much affordable food to as many ppl in the planet as possible.

There is no evidence to support your arbitrary claim that only the 'rich' could do it.

Toxic Salmon.
After reading most comments here and on other fish farm videos, it reminds me of the story about the goose that layed the golden egg.
And we all know how that one ended.
but is it going in the right direction?
Not to mention "Frankenstein".
The gill slime is falling! The gill slime is falling! Oh my!
Salmon Farming should be Banned,
Anyway, the great issue is to better adjust our consomption! we are far too many and there is less and less ressource! so we must ADJUST our Consomption!
Open your eyes and Save Wild Salmon Save Biodiversity! Care for Future of the Planet! Care for the Future of Next Generations!
Yes!!! Double down on farmed salmon and stop beef consumption which is far and away the most damaging impact and most unhealthy of any food we farm.
@@popeyegordon Well nobody forces you to eat it, but fish needs to eat fish

I love salmon, high nutrition... Farming in the canal would be great perhaps, just using river fall to make them more in movements then contamination about deases could be decresed... I have many dream here... Wish those dreams could be come true... Ameen 🌐🇬🇧❤️
I am pretty sure even the indoor fish is not a happy one. This is far from nature and in the end, they all will be killed. Maybe we should be happy that today, we don´t need to kill any living-being anymore to survive. We would do our environment, the animals and our health the biggest favour by just switching to a whole food plant-based diet.
Plants are living organisms, just like animals.
Poor plants :(
Food fads never beat science facts. Fail! Humans are omnivores by evolutionary design.
Hey Alex. This was really good. just saying.
You have a really low bar. This is 5 years old and the concerns have been addressed by the industry.
NOT
The date above is not 2013? The University of Columbia is foisting a hoax when they explain in great detail, complete with footnotes and links, how aquaculture is fact becoming much more sustainable? blogs.ei.columbia.edu/2016/04/13/making-fish-farming-more-sustainable/
There are a number of Aqua Culture business that ARE successful. But , its not open net pen Salmon farming. Not in 30 years. If you want to grow Salmon, find or build a big lake; fill it with coho or another salmon that survives in freshwater. Give that a try. Oh, and maybe stop using antibiotics to make your fish grow faster. Joke!! What is the rush Children. Do we Not have enough People! how about we concentrate on bringing our human populations of the many regions of the world down to levels that allow a sustainable place for all of Nature.
Gee what a concept.
Absolutely the main problem is an obscene level of human over population. But at any level farming can be done well. Never perfect but well. All food industries have been concentrating on reducing or eliminating antibiotics. Open ocean salmon pens are producing. Vegetarian fish feed is making leaps and bounds and will soon be the standard. This video is abandoned and obsolete in tone.

consumer will always win. it will be farmed inside a warehouse. Best thing we can do is just be aware and try to support wild fish consumption. tastier and healthier YUM
There are 7 billion people on the planet and growing more unsustainable every year. Wild fish aren't an option. We have depleting fish stocks globally. We must control our population and place our home as a priceless commodity
^Exactly. There are better sources of protein, Omega-3 and 6 other than fish.
Better is irrelevant. Tastier is the deciding factor.
4 years later, you have been proven wrong. Huge ocean farms continue to be installed and stocked. Cobia farming is a huge success!
wild fishes are nearly gone because we release fishes from farms who compete with them
I want to open new farm in nepal until now no one farming there so because my country a lot tourist so how I can farm plz guide me
Wth???.
What kind of farm did you want to open, did you open one by now?
A better way is to rise vegetarian fish on and facilities. There are way more food (vegetal waste) for them, and water discards can be used as fertilizers and so on. But we must pay attention to water supply, not al countries can afford fresh water. And yes , human habits must change, not to be so exigent on taste. Sardines and anchovies are very nice with good omega's too, and there are plenty. There are so many option, but again the consumer has the last word. Overfishing must stop. Many frozen fish abandoned on supermarket freezers and not consumed. etc., etc. These Norwegian owners must return home and pollute their own waters, Canadians wake up, stand up!. To few employees for a rich foreign guy!. DFO not putting enough attention on these issues. Reports, advises and all those good papers written by scientists, that valuable knowledge will do nothing if it stays only on papers and on computer screens. Good practices already exist, let just put them to work.
vegetarian fish?? what are you talking about? Fish needs meat
@@metalgearsolidsnake6978 You are not informed on this subject and yet you post this false information repeatedly. Look up vegetarian fish pellets for farming.

@@popeyegordon what false information? Are you telling me that salmons needs to be 100% vegetarian? are you serious?
What is their natural food?
I doubt you think this way, because any biologist knows what is natural to salmons.
Harvesting sentient beings - it's sick. and sad.
Humans can thrive on plants, this is unnecessary and illogical.
Thanks for your work Alexandra Morton.
This human can not, will not, but would never buy farmed fish
farmed fish tastes good
Humans are meant to eat meat and need it. Besides, I didn't work my way to the top of the food chain just to eat plants.

Its just discusting people with no souls if nobody buy thier discusting farmed fish their bussnis will collapse

Boycott farmed salmon, if nobody buy them these business will collapse and maybe we could save the wild salmon before the wild salmon becomes extinct.
