  • Monday night football in the Championship as Coventry City took on West Bromwich Albion at the Coventry Building Society Arena.
Since narrowly missing out on Premier League football after losing in the play off final to Luton Town in May, Coventry have found wins hard to come by in the 2023-24 season with just 3 wins so far from the 13 games played. Despite the slightly poor run by the Sky Blues’ recent high standards, the fans remain firmly behind Mark Robins for the joy he has brought to the club. Taking the side from League 2 to the Championship and (as previously mentioned) almost Premier League football. And an EFL Trophy win on top of that in 2017.
For the Baggies, there’s a slight feeling that this could be the season they return to the Premier League. With things ticking together under Carlos Corberan, they will certainly have a good go at reaching promotion in such a competitive season.
Into the game and Coventry were slightly on the upper hand in the opening stages of the match, then West Brom started to creep into the match and on 16 minutes they took the lead. Nathaniel Chalobah taking a shot from the edge of the box which was straight at Ben Wilson. However the shot was too hot to handle and Grady Diangana nicked the ball off the Sky Blues’ keeper and notched it into the back of the net.
Coventry continued to attack and a ball in from the left from Jay Dasilva into Haji Wright and from a tight angle couldn’t squeeze it under Alex Palmer in the Baggies’ goal. Going into the break, Coventry would have felt slightly undone by for being a goal down after playing some decent football in the first half.
Into the second half and a huge chance for Haji Wright 1-on-1 with Palmer and the American slotted the ball just wide into the near post side netting. Perhaps had to much time to think about the opportunity but as a striker, he should have really troubled the keeper.
Some magnificent work in the just inside his own half by Matt Phillips to turn away from Josh Eccles, the Scottish international then hits a lovely ball with the outside of his right foot around the Coventry defence, through to Brandon Thomas-Asante who clinically slots into the far corner. A great goal from a West Brom point of view. The ball played through was potentially offside which would be tough to take from a Coventry perspective
The killer for Coventry on the night was the lack of clinical ness from an attacking front. West Brom could’ve made the shoreline more appealing as Thomas-Asante pounced on a defensive mistake and tried to do a similar trick by cutting back onto his right foot. However, he found Coventry players in his way and his eventual shot was fired over the bar.
Full time which left the Sky Blues in 17th place in the table and the Baggies climbed into the play off places.
