Those who appreciate balance, finesse, timing and aesthetics will never underrate or under mention such a phenomenal exhibition by one of the few athletes who has embodied all of the above. Have no fear. He will be remembered. Many will try and emulate him.
The fact is, that he had quite a lot to spare on the board! He's not a giant with over-muscled long legs - just pure talent, speed and balance. He had such spring and grace - almost managed to get hang time like a basketball player. I think that his lighter physique was a bonus. All variable came together at the same time - he got fitter, faster and stronger over the next few years, but just couldn't match this magic period. Blessed by God.
His technique was practically flawless. A lot of TJumpers nowadays are raw power and very little finesse. It's rare to see a man of Edwards' build competing nowadays.
@@harryscott5651It's only rewatching this video right now that I notice he left a good 10 cm on the board in the 18.29 jump! Had he got his toes right up to the plasticine he'd probably have nailed 18.40 legally right here in this jump, all else being equal 😮
thats proof that technique is more important than physique he just looks like a regular guy if you cross him outside you wouldnt even think that this guy is a world champion in triple jump
Edwards always said that he wouldn't jump on a Sunday because of his religious beliefs, soon changed his mind when he realised that at most major championships the final is held on a Sunday
How far behind the bird was he, anyone know? There are discussions afoot with a view to dispense with the board altogether and measure from the point of take-off. The only way JE's world record may be broken methinks.
the sport is defined to not allow cross certain bounds, particularly in the beginning, meaning that him leaving a bit earlier than necessary would be a loss. The line was there and the camera was capturing it where he can defend if it's a true start and it cannot be defended if it is a false start. Like other sports these are elements of risk that need to be balanced. You define the sport as you cannot cross this and if they start earlier that would be on them and a physical decision for their risk management and so on. It may seem unnatural that someone who essentially ties or even loses to this record marked from where they left off would then "take" the world record back. But you might think it's natural. Ultimately it isn't up to us to decide this matter and so if it came down to it I would guess they define it like the former strategy, putting it on the athlete to start at the right place. Then again, perhaps that isn't really a thing you care about and just want to look at it from the perspective of the moment of the first foot placement. So basically it's up to whether or not that the specified in advanced placement of where the foot cannot take off from legally any more is supposed to be a part of the sport or not. If it's just leave from anywhere then that's what it is, but I would imagine it's defined as "your foot cannot cross this line, and measurement starts at the line" so they don't have to measure where his foot left the original point, rather they just check that their foot were behind the line when they started and then just measure from the line. So the grading is simpler in that case. Perhaps the competition is just that a false start would be a forfeiture of the attempt. Then that could be devastating to his possibilities to win and so they decide "land 3-4 inches away from that boundary because we cannot at all risk forfeiting an attempt" - so it may just come down to how the competition punishes false starts. If you can retry a false start then you should absolutely try to get much closer since if you fail you can do the safe start. So yeah it definitely depends on the competition but yeah someone could probably perform worse and obtain a WR if you do it that way which seems wrong but it's probably fine overall it will give more attention to the sport and someone will write about how it's not a "real" WR and that's fine.. Anyway.
He could have went even farther if his last jump was just a touch better I know he knows he could have done that part better. Everything else IMPECCABLE.
It’s 720 inches or 0.0098 of a nautical mile. Perhaps more significantly it’s a hair over 60 feet. 18.28 would have been under so this jump was the first (and only) time a human as broken the 60 feet barrier. Nobody else has broken 59 feet.
A truly incredible performance by Jonathan Edwards. He jumped as though he had springs on his feet, and his speed down the runway was worthy of a sprinter.
Still standing. And the distance sacrificed at the board would have given him a legal 18.43 which he was denied earlier in the year by a slight following wind. A great comment I read about this jump some years ago was along these lines: "Bearing in mind that he renounced his Christianity in the couple of years before this, it is somewhat ironic that whenever I see this jump I say to myself - Jesus Christ!!!", If the person who wrote that is reading this now - thank you!! I have quoted it in my local pub too when discussing athletics!
This man mastered the triple jump. Not a genetic freak on speed or jump, but he got the maximum of his body with technique. Pedroso and Sotomayor were also amazing
I can't see it being beaten for some time. A few years ago i thought maybe Christian Taylor might break it but there's nobody currently who looks like jumping beyond 18m.
At west buckland, the school Jonathan and I both went to, they have his world record painted out in the quad in white paint. It's an astounding distance to look at in real life.
I never get tired of seeing this performance. This record will get broken at some point, but until then, this is the one to watch. Over and over again.

He is an engineer , he did all calculation by himself like Fosbury where to jump at which speed , that's why British mind is the best in the world
POV: you’re trying to look smart by using big, long, unnecessary words
Oh please! This event was created by white people who couldn’t cut it in a regular jump.
Haha the fact you think those words are impressive says a lot

Here in 2022 watching the worlds and still unbeaten. Amazing.
Will never ever tire of watching this. 29 years and counting!

Unbelievable athleticism when they show it in slow motion.
That second jump. He’s just gliding.
What I love about his series of jumps or his style is that it is so clean on the landing 😗

If his arse hadn't hit the floor it was 19 metres
He's like a gazelle. And gazelles arent built for weight/strength, but for speed.
People confuse talent with hardwork

I'm currently watching the triple jump final at Paris 2024 olympics.
I'm using this video as reference
I like this so much. I’ve worked out so hard at a sport and I wish I had one bit of talent like him.
Made it look so easy! Incredible.
Honestly don't get tired of watching this!
Absolutely amazing ❤
Nearly 30 years later and he still has this world record!
Absolutely inspirational & what a great guy
2024 Olympics, Paris: still hasn't been beaten.
Right? Jonathan Edwards is a phenom! x
And he looks like a tax attorney lmfao
In my opinion this was the greatest field performance ever. So smooth and technical perfection.
What an inspiration 💙
That jump still gives me goosebumps all these years later.
September 2023 - It still stands.
This guy was reportedly jumping 18.70 in training. So the record can be broken, maybe not soon, but it is definitely possible!
He jumped >18.40 earlier that season with a +.4 illegal wind…
He’s a skinny wee white guy from Newcastle.
He’s a legend of ALL sport.

Atheletes these days struggle to break the 18 barrier. They should try breaking before thinking about Edwards
Recently watched the 2023 world champs - triple jump was won with 17.64m, over 0.5m shorter than JE; 28 years and counting... 😅
Phenomenal
Yeah this may not be broken for a very long time
This is the greatest world record
The third jump is unbelieveable
This is basically the closest to perfect triple jump we've ever seen on video. And both jumps yielded world records.
29 años y sigue en pie

Nearly 30 years now since this record was set...some have come close but no one has beaten it...yet.
Still stands as well
Seen these live.
Mark still holds the school record for triple jump. And I for Discuss long jump, 100m 200m and our relay team under 17
Absolute beauty.
King Edwards!!❤🎉🎉🎉
thats proof that technique is more important than physique he just looks like a regular guy if you cross him outside you wouldnt even think that this guy is a world champion in triple jump
you still have to fit though like he is and looks, can't be overweight with a belly doing this
Another ordinary guy is High Jump Stefan Holm.
technique and the ability to run 100m in 10.48s, dude was fast.
If he'd got the foot placement a bit better, I'd probably be watching this same clip in 2049.
Hos smile when he saw the measurement is the best part.
The perfection
Another olympics has finished, this record still stands. 2028 maybe.
That guy had the best day of his life .for a world record
Be something special beat this world record almost 30 years no one got near it
Perfect one is Jonaton
