As a child I was in a focus group at a local mall in NE Philadelphia and we spent time watching these commercials and commenting on them. A couple of bucks and a few rolls of Life Savers was a pretty fair wage back then. I still remember the take on Bo Diddley -- still catchy.
I remember these!! Never thought I'd see them again!! Loved the jingle and the weird creatures!!
I was watching David Caridine in an episode of Kung Fu, and a woman referred to her horse named Zeke. I suddenly remembered Zeke the flavor freak. I hadn’t thought of that since I was in the sixth grade. God, I love UA-cam.
This is what I remember Saturday morning cartoons with.
OMG! I haven't seen these commercials in forever! I remember these when I was very little....like 40 years ago!
Yup, they used to come on during cartoon Saturday morning in the 70's when I was a kid back in the day!
Based on the 1958 hit single "Willie & The Hand Jive", which in turn was inspired by Bo Diddley's "Bo Diddley", and the old vaudeville tune "Hambone."
Man, the 70's were just so casually weird. No wonder I dug being a kid then.
🐞🍬🍭🍬🐞
I remember my sister havin’ the 1979 LifeSavers book of variety candy treats...& always fightin’ with her to share!!!
🐞🍭🍬🍭🐞
Totally wonderful memories. I absolutely love these commercials....& my selfish sister!!!
I always remember this commercial for the cartoon psychedelia of it plus the Bo Diddley beat to the song.
There were a lot of commercials from that period that were inspired by Yellow Submarine and the psychedlic art of people like Peter Max.
When I saw these commercials as a kid in the early 70's I was not yet familiar with the music of Bo Diddley & that that was where the catchy jingle came from.
I remember now after seeing theses old ads that no matter what I got for Christmas I also always got the special holiday eight roll pack of them or was is a ten roll pack?anyway I got them every year until I was 15 or 16 Thanks dad R.I.P.
I remember the Sweet Story book too.
I remember these neat commercials very well from my childhood during the 70's. :) I loved the music and funky animation. Thanx for bringing back my wonderful memories. :)
Life Savers, Life Savers, fun to eat! (And the jingle is fun to sing!)
It's like Yellow Submarine somehow collaborated with School House Rock and this is the end result. Not that that's a bad thing, of course.
these are the best commercials ever!!!
My Dad actually was the Art Director for these cartoon sequenced Life Saver Commercials (and came up with the animations, with some help of the creative genius of his son, Don). Dad (now passed away) worked for Dancer Fitzgerald and Sample, back in the day where these were developed.
Oh, and thanks for the kind words! He would have loved to hear that his work was appreciated.
These were the first Life Savers commercials I remember.
The candies are delicious...
😋
But the commercials...even my wildest dreams wouldn't beat those LiveSavers TV ads...
:v
As a young kid, the bit at 0'18 always bugged me because I knew it was impossible for me to fit a lifesavers around my tongue! Funny how our mind works as a kid.
It's a cartoon-- anything can happen. :)
I remembered a Life Savers lollipop ad consisting of a lyrical jingle deprived from a 1950's song called "Lollipop,Lollipop" from the Chordettes.I thought maybe it'll be on this commerical montage, but not so.
I remember that too.
I remember that one! At first I didn't know that it was a "real" song, because I heard the commercial first.
@@MomLAU Yes. I never knew that many jingles were derived from songs until later.
Talk about instant flashback to being a kid. I loved seeing these on Sat mornings in front of the tv. I loved the beat of these. Wintergreen was and still is my fav tho.
It's a GENERATION X era commercial. You weren't a kid eating Life Savers in the 1970's, WE WERE.
These are old commercials, WTF are you on about these being Gen X era. I was singing along to these when I was young, and I'm 58 now...Cheers you funny muppet!
Awesome! What great memories, thanks for posting!!!
Thanks for posting these Ira!!
Hey, LifeSavers!
This reminds me of Yellow Submarine and animations from Sesame Street
I love this jingle!! It's based on the 1966 hit by The Strangeloves called "I Want Candy", which was later redone in the 1980's by Bow Wow Wow. How fitting-Lifesavers, I Want Candy-I'm sure that's why that song was used for the jingle-because Lifesavers IS candy!! I also love the "Yellow Submarine"-esque creatures in the commercials!!
Jingle sounds like it inspired Michael Franti & Spearhead's "Say Hey (I Love You)."
It's possible "I Want Candy" did inspire this jingle. The beat is what is known as the "Bo Diddley" beat--you can hear it in a lot of rock songs, from "Bo Diddley" itself to "I Want Candy" to Buddy Holly's "Not Fade Away" to Bruce Springsteen's "She's the One." I remember these ads well from Saturday-morning cartoons. They often were the commercial on "Schoolhouse Rock" segments. So creative!
I should add--this beat is also the foundation of any "hand jive" song ("Willie and the Hand Jive," "Born to Hand Jive" from "Grease," etc.).
It's based on Bo Diddley by Bo Diddley a decade before I Want Candy.
When I was a little kid I thought I heard "Lifesavers Lifesavers candy bean" in this ad, which threw me a bit of a curve---"why are they calling them beans ??!"
most of these spots were animated by George Bakes.
Was going to say how the animation style is very reminiscent of Yellow Submarine and was wondering if there was any crossover. But I guess Yellow Submarine was done by Ron Campbell...
For a minute there i was 11 again thank you!
These are fantastic! Thanks for sharing them.
I think this is a remix of the original commercial that I remember. The song should last longer and I recall different singers on it, then these. I wish we could find a source for the credits on these old commercials. I don't recall the animated blob at all. I remember children playing and eating life savers.
Why was animation so weird in the 70's? Everyone says it was LSD but this was the accepted art style world wide, what is the REAL reason/inspiration behind the trend?
bo diddly beat
Is that "Willie and the Hand Jive?"
Does anyone know how long these commercials aired? I was born in 1974, yet seem to remember some of these commercials.
There were 23 lifesavers in a pack and now theres 22?
"Here comes Zeke the flavour freak!"
He's always looking for great flavor and his tongue will try anything to get it.
How many of these zany Lifesavers commercials were there?
I was hoping to see the one where a creature gives that green wrapper-string a quick jerk like a ripcord, so the whole roll unwravels in a flashy spiral pattern, and the candy tumbles out and down!
Remember that?
i never tried lifesavers gum and lillipop i bet i would love that
I arranged the second one for 15 recorders because I love it! And yes... I said recorders. The one I used for the melody is actually a flea market instrument that sounds incredible! So thank you for posting this so I could hear it and do my arrangement! Also would you say the jingle is called "Lifesavers" or "Hey Lifesavers" because I had no clue what to name my project. I called it "Lifesavers" because that's the subject of the jingle. Also what year is this series of commercials from?
I forgot about the lollypops.
awesome!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Does anyone know who did the animation for these? The style looks familiar.
IT'S SOUND LIKE LIFESAVERS GOT DISCONTINUED A LONG TIME AGO!
Animation was still being developed and the anti-war freedom movement of the sixties had allowed society to begin accepting new means of expression. The central bank cartels had not yet fully established the police state we live in today.
And you got all that from a candy cartoon commercial? Wow!
What's the music?
I like THAT SONG
izzat Bo Diddley?
Let you flavor freak flag fly!
Nice commercial.
Hey Bo Diddly...
yo im a time traveler hows 2017 btw 2020 sucks
Notice how it goes from "23 flavors, 23 holes" to "22 flavors, 22 holes." Shrinkflation is nothing new, it just didn't have a name.
Lyrics?
life savers almost killed me when iw as younger i was siting on my couch upside down i ate a lifesaver i swallowed it by accident then it just felt weird.
THEY DISCONTINUED LIME LIFESAVERS
I know... BUT HERE IN CANADA WE STILL GOT EM HAHAHAHAHA
why did people from the 60 do drugs comercials alone look like acid trips?!
Anyone know what the little jelly bean looking dudes are supposed to be?
I AM EATING THIS SHIT
As far as Lifesavers go I will NEVER buy until they bring back the ORIGINAL 4 FLAVORS, CHERRY, LIME, LEMON and ORANGE!!
I have a headache.
Better watched high as a kite... Similar to Pink Floyd Music
