Aussie here!! Listening to your restaurant experience is making me laugh because 1. chin chin is one of the fanciest places I would be anxious too if I accidentally stumbled in there 2. The reason you won’t be rushed in restaurants here is because we don’t rely on tips so staff don’t really care about cycling through customers 3. Melbourne (unlike sydney) has free water taps all through the city and if anyone charges you for tap water that’s actually illegal here 😂 Also just to note I can’t believe you guys were driving around the cities … that’s nightmare fuel

In Adelaide, in South Australia. Yeah st Patrick's day isn't really a big thing here. In Adelaide city, parking is EXPENSIVE! Best bet is public transport. You definitely came at the right time! A few days before alot of our states were 40 degree heatwave (Celsius) Did you notice how much more expensive it is to eat out here?
I’m from Melbourne mate 1000 times better than Sydney lol. That’s why we get voted one of the best city’s in the world every year lol. Hopefully next time spend more time here and be more relaxed you will ❤ it 😊😊

There is free parking in Sydney if you look on back streets but mostly it's for one or two hours. We would love to have you guys back in OZ

李慎之先生去世了。虽然知道他病重住院，但在电话上听到他女儿说不是非典是肺炎，就放了心。我这种放心，多半是因为他的音容笑貌在我脑子里所留下的深刻印象：所长从来都是神采奕奕、情绪高涨的；他说起话来底气十足，常常神色飞扬，时而咄咄逼人。
我叫他所长，是在他就任中国社会科学院美国所所长那段时期养成的习惯。一九八五年，我从社会科学院研究生院毕业后，作为美国所美国文学研究生留在美国所文化室工作。刚毕业的我，对在文化室的这份工作，简直有点战战兢兢：文化室的几张办公桌，一张是中国著名翻译家、美国社会与文化研究主将、我念书时担任研究生院美国系系主任的董乐山先生的，一张是我的导师、著名英美文学学者、莎士比亚全集的编撰人施咸荣先生的，另一张是当时中国少有的外国戏剧研究家、中国著名京剧演员梅兰芳先生的儿子梅绍武先生的，还有两张是两个小年青的，其中一个就是我。因为上学的关系，我跟室里的三位学者“大款”很熟，因为他们三个人在我研究生考试口语面试的时候就同时出山，“吓”过我一回了，后来上了三年学，经常往所里跑，从请教到聊天到开玩笑，就不太“怕”他们了。可是所里有一个人，一直让我“害怕”。这个人就是我们的所长李慎之先生。
我为什么“害怕”所长？原因有几个。一个是他名气太大：我那时就知道他是延安的红小鬼，后来成了新华社国际部的大拿，大参考消息都是经他编辑，由他过目后才送报中央的，还知道中共的很多外交文件都是他起草或者修改的。这样的人，每天抬头不见低头见的，你说怕人不怕人。我“害怕”所长的另一个原因是，他特别喜欢“考考”年轻人。在所里工作，我免不了有事去所长室找他请示，他也免不了到文化室来“坐坐”。他到文化室来，主要是跟我的“大款”同事们商议要事，同时也绝不忘记捎带着考考文化室里的年轻人。我记忆中，我跟所长的对话，大部份都是他在考我，搞得我一见到他，就马上进入“临考”状态。一次，所里跟美国共和党的智囊团Ｈｅｒｉｔａｇｅ Ｆｏｕｎｄａｔｉｏｎ的访华成员开座谈会，当时所长选择了刚从英国留学回来的张毅做翻译。张毅的翻译技巧真是炉火纯青，几乎一字不漏，并句子通顺、词义准确。我们几个没出过国的小年青看了很是佩服。好像是第二天，所长又来文化室了，劈头盖脸就问：“吴（他南方人口音，吴胡不分）亚非，你什么时候上阵啊？”问得我差点儿“汗滴禾下土”。可有一次，我写了一篇关于黑人文学的文章，发表在美国所主办的《美国研究》上，他看了后，说：“看来你读了不少书嘛。”他那一句话让我得意了好几天。至少在后来的几天中，我不那么“怕”他了。几年以后，他见到我，又“老调重弹”，说：“你说说美国的ＰＣ（ｐｏｌｉｔｉｃａｌ ｃｏｒｒｅｃｔｎｅｓｓ）是怎么回事吧？”那时我不但不“怕”他了，而且还敢抓住时机侃侃而谈了。完后，我看到他脸上满意的神色，又禁不住暗自得意了许久。
其实仔细想起来，我这样“害怕”所长，这样描述他“吓人”的样子，对他是不公平的，因为我的“害怕”多半缘于我的年轻和不自信。现在想起来，所长其实是很平易近人的。我知道，美国所其他的年轻人都喜欢所长，因为他们当时都不像我那么不自信。所长其实最喜欢跟年轻人打交道，他尤其喜欢有才华的年轻人。假如你跟他聊起来了，深入下去，甚至让他发现你可以在学术方面挑战他，他就会忘记你不过是个年轻人了，他就会忘记他是个资历深厚的高官和学者了。他是一个尊敬才华和思想的人。对他来说，所有人在才华和思想的面前都是平等的，无论你是年轻的还是年长的，无论你是做官还是不做官的。了解了这一点，所长这个人就不那么“吓人”了，他简直就是“可爱”极了。这个我是到了后来自己成熟了一些，才体会到的。美国所的年轻人跟李慎之所长的关系真的是好朋友的关系，互相之间绝没有拘谨，绝没有约束；他那么一个经历广泛、学识渊博、思想敏捷的人，所里的年轻人都喜欢跟他聊天，都喜欢“刺激”他，好让他“信口开河”，好听他“谆谆教诲”，好看他“指点江山”。我以前怕他躲他真是“亏”透了，我躲他躲过了多少激动人心的学习和探讨的机会啊。
几年后，我出国了。后来的一些年中，当时美国所李慎之所长任内的大部份年轻人都陆续出国了。出国以后，我们跟美国所的关系也就逐渐地断了，因为美国所换了新所长，美国所在很多方面都和从前不一样了。然而，这些“年轻人”（现在也都不再年轻了）跟李慎之所长的关系却从来也没有断过。我们常常还是在学术方面找所长探讨，甚至在个人生活方面也是及时跟所长通报的。所长每次来美国访问交流，也都不忘记通知在美国的原美国所成员，能聚会的时候，我们还一起聚会。
我在美国这许多年，一直在教书。我的先生寒哲（我给他起的中文名字）是个民间哲学家（我给他的名号）。多年来，他除了做电脑咨询以养家外，还时刻不忘自己的哲学与文学爱好，读书、写书、办哲学和文学俱乐部。我在教书之余，花了几个月的时间，把先生的书翻译成了中文。九三年起，我开始寻求我的老师们的帮助，请他们批评指点。我先把先生著作的中文译本寄给董乐山老师看，董老师看了很是赞赏，写了封热情洋溢的回信，并将著作的摘要文章推荐给《读书》杂志。后来，我又写信跟所长谈了这部译作，并把译作的打印本寄给了他，所长看了也马上回了信。下面是所长给我先生的复信的部份内容：
“寒哲先生：
听亚非给我介绍了你对西方面临的危机的忧虑以后一个星期，就收到了《读书》杂志，看到了你的《衰朽与复兴》的摘要（虽然它简略到几乎完全不能表达你的思想），又一个星期就接到了你寄来的全书（打印稿）。
我把你的著作从头至尾仔细读了两遍。我十分钦佩你的博学，也十分钦佩你的文笔，它确实达到了你所推崇的古典的风格──简洁明净。但是我更钦佩的是，你看到了在被世界上许多发展中国家所羡慕的所谓“发达国家”中存在着深刻的危机，这种危机长期被掩盖、被忽视，只有最肯深思、最有洞察力的真正的知识分子才敢于正视。
我所以说“真正的知识分子”，是因为你在你的著作中痛斥那些“假知识分子”，虽然你在别处并没有用过“真正的知识分子”这个名词。我很理解你是用何等严肃的态度来看待“知识分子”的。我们中国本来没有“知识分子”这个名词，它是从你们西方引进的，然而一经翻译，就具有了自己的含义。在今天一般中国人的心目中，一个大学生大概就可以算是一个“知识分子”了，这样的“知识分子”也许能扩展自己的知识而成为一个“大知识分子”，却很少着意考虑人类全体的命运。你所说的知识分子实际上相当于中国传统的士，孔子所谓“志于道”的士，“仁以为己任……死而后己”的士，孟子所谓“无恒产而有恒心”的士。
