- H-Street was founded circa 1986, by professional skateboarder Tony Mag and bro Mike Ternasky. The two teamed up with pro skateboarder Dave Andrecht to form the first skateboard company that was run by skateboarders.
T-Mags basic idea was that skateboard companies should be run by skateboarders and not guys in suits that didn't ride, and that skateboarding should be a source of free and individual expression. The fact most towns in America have an actual H-Street somewhere, made it into an every town idea. H-Street is inclusive, not exclusive.
Inspired by Powell’s success in making skateboard videos, but limited to the budget of a real skateboarder, T-Mag and Mike theorized that a skate video could be made with a cheap VHS camera and edited at their pad on a VCR. Since this was the basic home video equipment available early in the 80′s the two ventured into uncharted waters. Knowing that it was more important to have skateboarders that demonstrated innovation and style for the sport than have a big budget, they invested in skaters that would become some of the world's best, Danny Way, Matt Hensley, Mike Carrol, The Godoy brothers, Sal Barbier and Erick Koston just to name a few.
The team started with John Schultes from Del Mar and John Sonner from Vista. Soon Ron Allen was added, who was originally a friend of Mike's from Nor Cal. One summer later, the video Shackle Me Not was born and would change the way that skateboard videos were made from that point on. A year later, Louisiana swamp rat Sal Barbier was added to the team, along with Alphonzo Rawls and several other top skaters of that time, and Hokus Pokus was made. Together Hokus Pokus and Shackle Me Not would take the skateboard world by storm; the videos became some of the most watched skate videos of all time. H-Street would eventually produce five major videos, with such notable skaters as Eric Koston, Mike Carrol, Jason Rogers, Colby Carter, Chad Vogt, and many other top pros of that era.

I’m 47 now and still remember watching this when it came out! The tricks today are insane and something we thought no one could do! I wish we could go back to these days!
I skated past this era (started mid 80s to late 90s) the street tricks look basic now, but the heavier, larger decks with less concave, bigger wheels & trucks y'all youth watching this prob have no idea the strength/nuance it took to do this. This was before, decks, wheels & trucks got lighter to compliment this style. I could only flip/trick 40% what I could after skate tech got lighter/more refined.
I'm 47 as well and I remember when this video came out. My crew and I would sit around watching it and get extra stoked before hitting the streets.

Just turned 46, just started skating again. I would watch this, then go skate everyday, all day!!! Matt H is still rad!!!
I remember when this vid came and my buddy ordered it from Thrasher and we watched it at his house. We were so blown away! Up to that point the Powell and Santa Cruz videos were our bibles, then H-Street just took what we thought was possible to the next level. We hit the streets with a vengeance that day and tried to learn all the new tricks we saw. Hand rails? We were like “Whaaat?!” Man at that time skating was progressing so fast, new tricks were coming out all of the time. Innovation was happening with new pros and new companies popping up like every couple of months. Nobody really had a half-pipe around here in Jersey so street was the thing and this was way before skating was cool so only the punks and outcasts were skaters or freestyle bikers. I begged my parents to let me build a mini-ramp in our backyard but I settled for a small ramp and a rail slider. Nowadays I kick around on my long board and a 10 year old Alien Workshop board. I don’t skate but here and there, can’t do much more than a few tricks but I still look at curbs and handrails like I used to. This video brings me back in a big way, got me stoked to get an old school board, with a shape and some real concave, long and wide with loose trucks! These band-aid boards that have become the ubiquitous standardized skate equipment just never did it for me. They lack the variety and uniqueness that defined skatings earlier times. That’s what happens when something like an art form becomes a sport, it has to fit into a package for easier commercialization. Something was lost in that transition with skateboarding. And I think some of the soul went with it. But hey that’s progress I guess.

I can relate. No ramps really in NY in the 80s so we were street skaters by default. It baffles me still the way people in California talk about it like this was a choice vert or street. For them I guess it was, but no one's folks in 80s NY were going to let them build a half pipe in the backyard nor would a city build one. Thankfully that's changed because some of the places we went to find good spots the skate and the antics we got up to and I was hardly to worst offender, would make me as a parent today grateful that I know the kids are at the skate park with some degree of supervision. I personally like the double tailed boards, but I hear you that the uniformity of a sport takes away from the culture of skating. Shackle-Me-Not was the breakthrough video where skating was shown for the raw sport it is.

I seen the video and begged my mom to go to the skate shop and buy Matt Hensley's deck. I mowed the lawn every three days during the summer after. Then started mowing other lawns for money then bought a Danny Way deck by myself. I was addicted.

I remember like it was yesterday that my friend called me up and told me "GET TO MY HOUSE QUICK" I hurried and grabbed my board and out the door, I was 10 years old and started skating across town thinking that there was a emergency order something. I get there and he rushed me to the TV and said "WE GOTTA WATCH THIS VIDEO, IT'S INSANE". I remember that I was blown away by the skating. After the video, we couldn't stop talking about it and had to go shred. It's just one of those moments in my life I will never forget.

Thanks for uploading this. LOL I grew up in Vista and was a total skate gumbie. It's hilarious looking back at this. Back in the day I skated at all the spots in the video and have ridden with most of the guys in the video. It's pretty unreal looking back to realize that I grew up in the middle of that time in skateboarding. Just wish I had 1/2 the talent of those guys. Definitely an amazing time to be a skater.

There were a couple really great bands in there, other than that it was mostly this dude’s music. A lot of that was that weird electronic sound going on. I didn’t pick the song out for my part. To be honest, that first video, noone knew that it was gonna do what it did, you know what I mean? Maybe Mike knew, but we never thought that a year later we’d be in Europe watching it in movie theaters and doing these huge demos."

This video lead me to a life of saying who anytime someone says the name Matt.
Saying "Yeaah Matt" anytime someone landed something sick was common for my friends and I. None of us were of course named Matt.
My 1st board was a Hensley roached out. Used of course ripped it tell it turned into wood chips best felling in the world . no internet no local shops . it was hard to get a pro board and I had a Matt Hensley beautiful times
