Back in 1976 I bought a 353 in red. It was the first brand new car that I owned when I was 18yrs old. I liked it, and had if for many years. It was reliable too. I only sold it because spare parts became hard to get, but it went to a good home!
Geez, the scenery mixed with the music and my knowledge of cars made me want to cry. I know communist authority was deceptive and harsh in reality, but the scenery here looked so simple and beautiful, and knowing what was to come soon after this commercial feels almost like a sendoff.
This superb car killed off by Helmut Kohl... who also destroyed most of the DDR's industry, the Palast hotel, Palast der Republik etc. Sadly he was never brought to trial.....

They spent a lot of money re-engineering the Wartburg to take the Volkswagen 1272cc 4-stroke. Practically the whole front end had to be changed to support the increased weight and physical size of the new engjne. Although a decent car was the result, it came too late - overtaken by political events that led to the potential customers having much greater access to better Western cars. Thus every Wartburg 1.3 produced made a loss. There were a few other innovations, such as the LED fuel and temperature displays at a time when most other cars used traditional gauges. The instrument binnacle had switchgear arranged in exactly the same manner as the Audi B2 80/90/Coupé. The overall shape, however, did not change - it still looked like a smaller version of the late 1960s Simca 1301 - there was no money to design and build a more modern body.

ГДР это лучшее что было у человечества.Служил в армии там.После армии пришлось работать в компании из ГДР.Отличное отношение к людям труда было.

Absolutely 100 % correct ! The factory survived almost 100 years of German history - but 2 years " Kohl " were too much.
