Venables buyout would be $44 million. That alone I think guarantees another year. But next year is the make or break year for him. Without significant improvement next year, he will be gone.
I'm not and here's why. No one looks like a slam dunk head coach hire and even if you name someone elite, they'd still need to do a rebuild of the offense. I'd rather keep the guy who has rebuilt the defense because, if we fire BV a lot of defensive talent will be gone. I'd rather only need to improve and rebuild 1 side of the ball next year. Personally I've only seen BV make 1 glaring mistake this season as a head coach. The timeout into a punt and for what its worth, it completely made sense (JJF first time calling plays and a miscommunication on the call). The difficult schedule, bad OC, offensive injuries and young QB's all add up to the product we're getting. I really don't know if there's a head coach in America that would get a better result out of this team given the same situation.
@@zophix-5741 I feel like you're right for the most part but at the same time this is his 3rd year. He's had time to make improvements and get ready for the SEC and not only is it not improving it's worse than the first 2 years. I don't think he's HC material. Not an OU fan just my thoughts.
If you hire a good OC and QB coach, get some quality OL transfers, and get healthy the offense can be rebuilt over the offseason. BUT if you fire BV and have to start from scratch you’re looking multiple years to rebuild the entire team not just the offense.
In the last game, I counted 5 guys that were wide open and JA decided to tuck and run. Unbelievable! I agree, good QB alone would really turn this team around, but it does expose other problems as well.
I honestly don't know why OU fans always go straight to "It's all about QB play". QB is not the most important part of a football team. The trenches are where the game is won or lost. It's what makes the SEC so much harder than the other conferences. Stick Tom Brady behind OUs line and he's still getting sacked 9 times
When we lost our entire O line last season and Dillon Gabriel, this offense was in trouble. Losing the OC on top of that, made it insurmountable. Ball security is the chief responsibility of each player who touches it. The QB is especially responsible as well as the RB's and WR's. Our QB play has been dismal. We had only two passing plays over 15 yds. The fake punt, and the trick play. Our QB's are not up to the task. the speed of the game should have slowed down by now for them(him). It has not. So, I believe it will take a New OC, who finds his own QB and brings him in, and directs the "fixing" of this Offense. BV will have to give him autonomy to do that and NIL dollars to accomplish it. As to firing BV you're right. I've been saying that all along to my fellow fans. Its stupid.
I’m in agreement with you. BV being fired is the last thing OU fans should be asking for right now. Yes he’s not perfect but we’re not exactly healthy either. Injuries galore! If we fire BV, you’re right, it’s another repeat of what we just saw in year 2. I say grab a great OC and build on this defensive foundation BV has brought to OU. A well balanced team can win you some games in the SEC. It just means more? Well then we need to bring more! Get the best OC you can this offseason. And a freakin QB coach!!
Exactly. If you go grab a Leftwich, maybe an OL or two. And perhaps a qb... I think you can get to 8+ wins next year. 10 would not shock me. If you fire bv and burn it all down, that OL isn't gonna just magically be fixed. 😂 But if you let Fasusi and this next class, along with maybe a portal OL or two, and the improvement we are finally seeing from the OL gel... You could have a decent OL next year. If you burn it all down, good luck. Not to mention that defense is gonna be better next year. Worse up the center...but better overall. My thought is Mack Leftwich. But, any solid OC and an actual QB coach would probably do.
