- Abandoned Elm Road Level Crossing, March, Cambridgeshire on the Bramley (Wisbech) Line.
Location: 52.570735, 0.092991
Date Filmed: 18-07-2021
One of several abandoned crossings on the derelict March to Wisbech line, also known as the Bramley line, which closed in 1968 for passenger services and 2000 for freight services. This crossing was a half barrier type, with four halogen warning lights, two Mk1 half barriers and two bells, mounted on the barrier posts. Only three of the four warning lights remain, and only one of the barriers, along with a bell. Vegetation has overgrown the track either side of the crossing. There are plans to reopen the line from March to Wisbech for passenger services again, with completion expected in the late 2020s.
Thanks For Watching!
I love old crossings. You don’t see many these days
I love abandoned crossings! Keep it Up!
Same, I will 😊
Great video! Did you manage to visit any of the other level crossings on the abandoned line up to Wisbech? I never realised they planned to reopen the line to passenger traffic in the next few years, though I'm not sure any of the crossings will be kept (definitely not in this state of course, but I also mean any in a renewed state).
Thanks 😁 I only filmed one other, on Twenty Foot Bank. I drove over the Redmoor Lane crossing which was also still standing but didn’t film it due to time and finding no suitable place to park beside it. I have read that all the crossings will not be reinstated when the line intends to be rebuilt and reopened. A couple of bridges probably require constructing.
Nice! Its always interesting to see stuff like this for me personally.
Thanks 😁 I find abandoned things really interesting too.
I really hope that the line does get reopened in 2028. Considering they already have equipment here, it's probably going to get removed and replaced by a bridge which wouldn't make sense because the Crossings already there. If Elm Road somehow doesn't get replaced, I'm expected 4 SPX barriers and 4 LED Wigwags.
Splendid video!
Thanks! I did try and do a bit of research about the line reopening. It is likely that all the crossings will be removed and replaced with bridges when its rebuilt.
@@UKLevelCrossingsChannel dang that sucks. That's like 6 road crossings gone
Wonderful! Those wigwags would be better off bought, restored and kept as a souvenir by someone wouldn't they?
Yes, they would as they will only be scrapped when the time comes to rebuild and reopen this line in the future.
maybe if the march to wisbeach line reopens some day in the 2020s there might be new leds installed and there might be a chance where there might be no bells then replaced by yodalarms when the line reopens in the 2020s maybe also there might also be no pengiun barries after the reopening of the march to wisbeach line.
Nice video:D
Thank you 👍
@@UKLevelCrossingsChannel you re welcome

Thanks 😎
How did you found these crossing
I just knew about these crossings beforehand, as-well as the abandoned March to Wisbech line. I checked Google Maps to see where the crossings were.
I wonder if it would still work?
There’s a video on UA-cam somewhere of a 47 going over this crossing in 1997, think it’s the only living proof of this crossing in action
Great video! Impressed that they never bothered to remove the equipment when the line closed. I'm guessing that's the REB at 0:53? Looks pretty well overgrown and like someone may have already broken into it to strip-out the copper.
Yes,thats crossing but bell sadly:c alarms have been replaced and Abandoned:c
Very nice video! Thank you! Why was this crossing abandoned please? Was this freight or passenger train crossing please?
yes but if crossing closed turn into a grass you
if i went to drive crossing i found to into forest.Thank You!
Good video, but if gave us some narration as to where it is, what line it’s on and when it was last used it would be much better.
Thanks 😊 I’ve included all that information in the video description instead of adding captions or narration in the video
@@UKLevelCrossingsChannel OK. I just think videos are a bit boring without and speech. I know where this crossing is, it’s on the March - Wisbech line. Hard to believe I did it in 1999!
Verry Nice when was the crossing Actually a level crossing?
It’s been disused since around 2000, although there are now plans to open the line again for passenger trains
@@UKLevelCrossingsChannel sounds interesting
Fun fact: you can flick the bell to sound it
Yeah I did have a go at flicking the bell and tapping it with my car keys whilst I was here.
Will this crossing be used again?
I don’t think so. I believe it will be removed when this line is rebuilt and reopened in the next few years.
Can you imagine if the bell started ringing or the lights suddenly came on?⁰⁰
what’s sad about this that it has mechanical bells
Yeah, it has been kept as it is from the 1980s and never upgraded or changed. Instead, its just rotted and become abandoned :(
I believe closed by Doctor Bitching.
It was a freight line until 2000, but I do believe passenger services declined in the 1960s. There are now plans to reopen the line for passenger services however.
In fact the line had nothing to do with beeching at all,it was not on his list for closure ,other factors emerged for its closure to passengers ,and followed by freight use closure .
