‘Toxic masculinity’ in 80s/90s Gillette ads: • monogamy • loving your children • looking after your children • teaching your children • loving your family • striving to achieve your potential

@@ManicMindTrick Depends, the nostalgic sound is great! But I also like a lot of modern EDM/Electro pop music. I would say all of the eras of music had their gems. But yeah, I have to say that I wouldn't be complaining if we got 80's style music back lmao

This commercial should be in the Cleo Hall Of Fame. The Emmys Of Commercials. I remember seeing this Commercial and it was when I started reading GQ Magazine. I am Female but I found this Commercial so beautiful. A Father congratulating his Son on his New Marriage, Doing a Dance of either Greek or Jewish Heritage, getting Kudos at work, passing on a Family Heirloom to the "Next" Generation, A Son starting early rituals of manhood by wearing a suit, and coming his hair and even seeing Father Shave or even a Man showing his Emotions when he sees the Woman he loves greeting him from a Business Trip.
Being a child of the 80's, it brings back a lot of memories watching these old commercials from my childhood time. They sure don't make commercials like this anymore.
commercials/movies/music everything is down to chitter. The society now is not ascending to something great but descending into what I would think is retardation
For sure. I was 6 years old and I vividly remember this commercial as I do many others. This one was burned in memory because just like any other boy I aspired to be a man...and this commercial was about men succeeding. I didn’t even know anything about shaving and I wanted to go get a Gillette razor. Tv In the 80s early 90s was so awesome. Now that I am a man....I’d give anything to be a kid again lol.
what was so terrible about this? this was a positive portrayal of masculinity- being successful, a good father and husband, etc. this is golden compared to the new ad.
When I was a kid this actually programmed me to think these are a step a man makes... its more then an advert it put me on the right path at 5 ... god help the kids of today they probably watch a transgender shaving
@@VtreyusV3 You joke, but you know that's going to happen. - a clip of a successful black husband-white wife. - a Gay couple out with friends laughing - some hs kid in a wheelchair just before winning an award in school. - and finally a clip of some drag guy in a dressing room, shaving just before getting his/her big show.
They could've just re-released it instead of what they just justreleased... Furthermore, I believe it may be too late for them ... Equal to a magician calling their audience dummies at the beginning or during the show and walking off the stage telling them to F-off!
Not only is this superior from a cultural and spiritual perspective in its celebration of masculinity. But it actually functions better as an add as well. It actually describes and features the product its selling.
@Cheryl It wasn't Gilette but P&G wich owns the company since 2005, and that ad was approved by North America P&G director Carolyn Tastad. It was a different company, a major brand damaged by incompetent buffoons, this is what you get when you put a feminist in charge.
It is actually one of the most successful FMCG ads of all time. I remember writing to BBDO the agency in 1990 to ask for a copy of the music They sent me a cassette with the full version of it in stereo. Sadly I have no idea where it is which is a shame as it sounds amazing and is 2 plus minutes long.
I’m proud to be a man. I pass this pride onto my 8-year old son and teach him to be assertive, competitive and strong, yet respectful, honest and kind to others.
Love this add. I am spanish I played soccer in the bank where I work for, representing spain. The guy in the end of the add looks like me on the 80s. In red. As we were dressed. What memmories!!! I never feel so good hearing a commercial. The best commercial ever
I still remember this original ad from when I was a kid, and it's still awesome, great clips of men doing a variety of things, great inspiring song, just awesome and there's a reason why it's so memorable because it's so inspiring, uplifting and affirming unlike the trash new ad which is pure judgemental nonsense which will be remembered for all the wrong reasons, I already want to forget it.
How touching is it to see a Father and his Son interact like they do in this video... It's a shame that Feminism has convinced so many people that men are not like this. smh.
The 80's was such a magical time, music films cartoons and even there adverts were such deep quality, this is probably my favourite advert,so positive and true, be the best u can be!
We still have these values among the common people. It is the media, politicians, corporations, and universities that have decided to demote these values to our detriment. Truly a culture war.
At the moment when women became Judas not only against their men but also against their sons and daughters, when women imposed that female promiscuity is empowerment, when getting jobs by cheating due to quota laws is fair, when that they lost empathy, that they rejected marriage and family, that they turned their sons into betas who hate their father, that they turned their daughters into psychopaths who love money, at the time that women preferred the privileges that gives them the state and they did not defend their men, sons and daughters, at this moment they sold us for 30 silver coins to the degenerate and corrupt elite. Evil triumphs when people fall into their greed, narcissism, pride, gluttony, envy, anger and laziness. Modern women fall into all these sins. Modern women will continue to remain silent about the abuse suffered by their sons, daughters, husbands, parents, brothers, friends, uncles, grandparents, because modern women hate women and all the good things that it means to be a woman.
I agree completely. The new advert didn't say any of that though, it simply said don't be a horrible man - being a man, including a manly masculine man is not the thing Gillette are saying is bad, they are saying that being a bad person is bad, and we shouldn't just excuse actually bad men by acting like it's "just a man thing." The advert is saying that as men, no matter how masculine we are, we are better than this. You can be the most manly man in the world, and still be a decent person - men and masculinity is not what is being shown as a fault, disrespectful behavior is. Bullying is not masculine, it is bullying.

To me this is the greatest ad ever. It would never work today because it would be deemed sexist to only have men in a commercial and only sell products to men (Funny when only men grow beards...... 1980s: men using Gillette razors
2020s: men identifying as Gillette razors.
199-something vs 2019....
OooOOooof
Rgjrunner This was in 1989. 30 years before crash and burn.

Lovin' the patriarchy!
Amen
LUL
This commercial is alot better then the one they made recently.
No matter how I look at it, the 60s, 70s, 80s, 90s and early 2000-7. Are the best
As this ad says, "it's plain to see".
This was the song that me saddened because it bring back the memories the very day that year when my brother has schizophrenia. He's doing better on medication right now.
best commercial music for me
I wish I grew up in this era
Who's watching this after the new "woke" Gilette commercial?
Show this AD to the Dollar Shave Club & tell them to remake but have them promote their superior Dollar Shave Club Razor. Yeah that will be the Gratest kick to the balls Gillette will receive lol.
I love it
I will honor the company you once were, Gillette. Not this monster you’ve become.
Holy shit times have changed
