To create subfolders you need to use a backslash (\). ;-) "EAC options" - tab "Directories" - Use this directory D:\NewMP3 "EAC options" - tab "Filename" - Naming scheme %albumartist% - %albumtitle% (%year%)\%tracknr2%. %title% - Use various artist naming scheme %albumtitle% (%year%)\%tracknr2%. %artist% - %title% These are the naming schemes I use, but you can use whatever you like. As you can see you can use a different naming scheme for VA compilations. There is also a tab "Additional Filename" which you may need to fill in, too, if you use an external encoder.
As far as I concerned, the only thing that matters in 2022, is which software can connect to the most comprehensive CD database and thus not having to type this in manually.

This was a very helpful video. I ran into the file folder issue with EAC and for me, it's a showstopper. We have 12000+ tracks of music and our library is constantly growing. Ripping without folder/subfolder creation just isn't realistic. I see below that someone suggested musicbee so I will see what that app can do.
Probably an unpopular opinion but Windows Media Player has been the best program to use for me for at least 10 years now. I used to use other programs but there were always issues. Sure you may lose a bit of quality but the ease of use of WMP is unmatched.
Anti MS sentiment runs deep among a lot of folks, but I rarely run into a disc that is identified incorrectly or rip mp3 files with audio glitches using WMP. It's a pretty strong, mature product.
Easy, yes, but if you want quality you'll want EAC. I admit it needs some skill to set it up (there are tutorials out there), but once that's done EAC is a no-brainer, meaning very easy to use.
I use CDex to win9x and it became unuseble with Windows XP and never used CDex since , I assume it was version 1.3 or -the problem were the windows had a differnt way of reading cd in winXP (win nt )

I thought freedb service was dead since last year? Or did you reroute the server to gnudb? I have to disagree that Winblows Media Player is a good environment ripping and managing music data... Just won't touch this media player environment, ever... As for EAC, sorry but you'll have to manually assign a folder to store the ripped tracks; in other words, no automatic generation of folder with artist name whatsoever......

@@ThriftyAV M$ has not been doing well with the Media Player environment for years, which was why people turned to other third-party players for added video codec support. But I guess the same thing goes to managing audio as well, such that solutions other than M$ are often being considered. Regarding codec, do you know which mp3 codec Media Player uses? At least with the external LAME you know you'll be sticking to the latest v3.99 which should be just fine when you convert to CBR320 (with VBR you can only go up to 256kbps). Tagging however is another story. None of these ripping solutions would yield good results (read: detailed tagging), and that you're likely to manually re-manage them via Mp3Tag while browsing Discogs, or use MusicBrainz's solution via its proprietary tagging software. This is the most time-consuming oart, but if you are to manage FLAC files in archival quality then this is no escape...... As for privacy, I don't think it's an issue, as your email addy is only used when you submit any tagging corrections to the (gnudb) service. Lastly, may I suggest you redo this ripping test again, except to output FLAC files instead? You'll need the external FLAC Frontend codec but I'm interested to see how the Media Player handles the conversion (eg. fues it have its own internal codec? etc.)......
@@vampyrelycan99 Thank you for your comments and suggestions. I have encoded FLAC for some of my favorite CDs, but with 7000+ music titles in my collection, file size is a consideration. This is why I lean toward lossy, yet widely supported mp3 files.

Years ago I also ripped CDs into mp3s only, but as times passed I gradually transitioned to lossless rips; mp3 conversion is now only done on-demand (for transferring to and listening from smartphones) and only from the existing FLAC files. Yes, storage has always been an issue, but given these digital times/evolution you'll just have to deal with it. BTW, have you ever considered setting up audio CAS servers for home audio streaming? You're expected to invest on storage, and the FLAC workflow is again no escape.

yeah i've used EAC, Foobar, and WMP to rip FLAC files from cd's and every one of them results in different sounding files. and i know that EAC is suppose to be the most secure because it compares the rips to other peoples rips, but what got me started messing with other programs was an HDCD. didn't sound quite right to me on the EAC rip, so i tried using foobar and the HDCD plugin and it was ok. now i don't know why but today i decided to try using wmp and low and behold that did it. it sounded like when i play the cd. tried another album that was a regular cd and i actually preffered the wmp rip better on that one too. so really i decided to see if anyone else had compared the rip quality between different programs and what was their experiences were? now i have a pretty nice setup with JBL studio monitors and a 12" sub coming from a nice soundcard, so i can hear a lot more detail than someone with little desktop speakers or a bluetooth speaker or what not. but interested to hear other peoples thoughts or opinions. definately surprised me though. also not sure if you'd hear as big a difference ripping to mp3 either since that's lossy and on my setup i can tell the difference between mp3 and cd/flac and could pick it out blindfolded 10 out of 10 times
@@XX-121 Interesting. I have never seen HDCD's. Are they just like regular but 24 bit dynamic range? I have ripped a few SACDs with my PS3 and those sound great! 64x the bitrate of regular CDs. Some also come in 5.1 channel sound. Most receivers and DACS dont natively decode DSD format though, so it is usually converted back to high bitrate PCM.
@@phreak1118 yeah HDCD's are close to 20 bit dynamic range when decoded and sound great and actually still sound good when played on regular cd player. most of them came out closer to the turn of the century and shortly after except all the stuff that comes out from the Grateful Dead which is usually 4 releases of 3 cd's each then a box set with 4 or 5 shows it's all still on HDCD. SACD's while they sound great are not actually 64x resolution of cd because most of that info is dithering noise that has to be filtered out and plus you are getting 6 channels of audio info vs 2 so that's upping the bit rate too. what happened with HDCD is microsoft bought the company and never did anything with it and basically killed the format. It could have actually been the answer to the loudness war. because i know there was one Green Day album released on it that was all loud and clipped on regular player but if you had HDCD player it actually extended the peaks back to where it was no longer clipped. but back to DSD, not sure if you ever visit the "audio science review" channel or not, but he's got a couple videos up there doing analysis of a few DSD and Hi-Res stuff on there from different companies where prob most of the extra size of the files are just made up of noise to where at that point all you're really doing is taking up extra hard drive space. too much to type here but def worth taking a look at.
I think another great program for ripping might be dBpowerAMP at least it excells at converting. Why all the drama and panic with EAC when literally all modern era optical drives can do DAE with error handling, and if the CD is scratched the firmware for sure will give a message or at least stop reading at constant speed. For perfect copy it is a good (ideally brand new) compact disc that one needs rather than this charlatan software of EAC.
yes the soundrecorder (system32 folder ) in windows 95 were the first mp3 ripper -Installing comic chat 2.1 beta installed the mp3 codec into windows 95 - Winamp could play but not rip , First winamp I used was 1.5 - then realplayer 8 complete setup (year 2001 ) could rip in mp3 and the formats that were merged into mp4 + the minidisk format - which stil sounds good but r8 wont work with modern windows since its considered malware? - yes media monkey is rubbish now -so is realplayer , and jetaudio -dont install any of those , been bought and made spyware and will hardly work

This works only if you don't use a cue file. If you add a cue file the directory gets into it and you'll get an error.

Why doesn't anybody talk about ripping with fre:ac ? I've been very happy with it on my Win 7 laptop in 2024.
Prefer the ability to convert to whatever level of MP3, AAC, or OGG & Opus I wish from the exact copy files tbh.
AAC is 2nd to MP3 in compatibility.
The goal of this vid was to find the easiest, not necessarily the best. For the best transfers, I prefer EAC.

just go into the settings and make sure "retrieve additional information from the internet" and "update files" (or something like that) is checked.
I thought WMP was discontinued in Windows 7.
Windows 11 is where it's discontinued.

I did try dbpoweramp and I liked it... but it is only free for 21 days? Then it is $48 for personal use.
