Giant Hogweed control with a Scythe

  • Long ago in the Russian hills a Victorian explorer found the regal Hogweed by a marsh, he captured it and brought it home to London and made a present of the Hogweed to the Royal Gardens at Kew.
    Fashionable country gentlemen had some cultivated wild gardens in which they innocently planted the Giant Hogweed throughout the land. Soon they escaped, spreading their seed, preparing for an onslaught, threatening the human race. They seem invincible: immune to all our herbicidal battering.
    But, strike by SCYTHE, and they are defenceless: but wear PPE as they use the sun to photosensitize their venom!
    (text adapted from song lyrics “Return of the Giant Hogweed” by Genesis)

    "Scnicking"? Premature commentary- I thought a clever observation would help, so I began typing part way into your saga. If I had only waited to the end of this great video, I could have avoided the total embarrassment of exposing my ignorance of Lewis Carroll's brilliance. Thank-you, I think.

    • @wildseed01
      @wildseed01  4 роки тому +25

      * Scnick. I have added the letter c here to snicker-snack to create an onomatopoeic verb to scnick: to slice or sever with a scythe (as opposed to with a ‘snickersnee’ = a large sword-like knife, especially one used as a weapon). Pronounce as Schnitz (cut, slice - as in Schnitzel), and as the sound of a scythe blade slicing through vegetation.

    I respect Richard Brown. Most other youtubers would resort to some clickbait uploads to take advantage of a video going viral. Not Boomer Brown. He uploads when he has some good scythe action to show you, and keeps his mouth shut otherwise. And now I know how best to deal with a Hogwart outbreak if my garden ever becomes infested.

    Have you tried digging the young plants out? A vintage dock grubber or the more modern version sold as ragwort forks work well.
    Dig them up at seedling stage in the spring, easy enough to spot the distinctive leaves and stem colour even when very small.

    I recently watched a video on UA-cam about the spread of Giant Hogweed in Russia. At one time, in the old Soviet Union, it was cultivated for animal food until they found out about the problems it causes the animals to which it was being fed. But when the cultivation ended, no attempt has ever been made to eradicate or even control it resulting in a horrendous spread of the dangerous weed over vast swathes of the country -- grass verges on motorways are lined with the stuff.

In any case, we had one in our field that must have survived mowing and grew up past 10+ ft tall. I may be thinking of a different word than hogweed though. Let me look it up
