That is the case for any BEMANI game ever. Every game tries to equal or top its predecessor's difficulty in at least one song. It's always been like that. That's why they gave the difficulty ratings an overhaul and made it 1-20 feet, so it's much easier to tell difficulty apart now. Up until SuperNOVA2, some 10's were too easy and some were too hard (compare MAX 300 to Pluto Relinquish, for example.) Now they are 15 and 18 feet respectively. Pluto Relinquish was a 10 in Difficult, Expert AND Challenge! It was a mess. Extreme has two songs that count as 16's in the new rating system, MAXX UNLIMITED and PARANOiA survivor MAX. Just look at the hardest song from each game and their new foot rating and you'll see how it slowly increases. 1stMIX to 2ndMIX: 12 3rdMIX to 5thMIX: 13 MAX: 15 MAX2 to EXTREME: 16 SuperNOVA to X: 18 X2 to X3: 19 Plus the hard songs don't really make up most of the game, the vast majority of the songs lean around 9-12 feet or so. What will 20 look like? We'll only have to wait and see :)

Now it's 2017, and comparing MAXX Unlimited to the hard songs today, songs like Valkyrie Dimension, Egoism 440, and Over the "Period" make MAXX Unlimited look like a joke.

They had to keep raising the bar. In the very first Dance Dance Revolution (which I actually found a working copy of once) the hardest song was PARANOiA. Yes, the original 8-step one. When I first started playing (DDRMAX2), the hardest song was MAXX UNLIMITED. But the dedicated and obsessed players kept getting better and better and making even the hardest songs "easy" until they were doing PARANOiA survivor MAX 2 while facing away from the screen and 100% perfecting it, so Konami had to keep making harder and harder songs to keep the players interested. Even if only 0.0001% of people who'd play a DDR machine would ever get to the level where they could last more than 3 seconds after the song starts (at least on the hardest difficulty), the challenge had to be there. I personally _never_ got very good (the best I ever managed to do was beating MAX 300 on Heavy, which I only managed once) before I stopped playing and am now in far too poor physical shape, but with some players pushing the absolute limits of human physical ability in terms of endurance, reflexes and agility, the developers had to rise to meet them.
I wanted to mention Tohoku but decided on going with Pluto Relinquish instead. I related it to Tohoku in many ways (fast, heavy crossovers) so me including PR made me not include Tohoku. Same reason Antimatter isnt included even though it's harder than a few of these.
quite a few things are considered for determining the rank. I try to think about back in the day when each one of these would have been a struggle for me or players just making it to those levels. There are other harder 18s than NGO i could put but they were either too similar to others (Antimatter challenge/Elemental) but I included NGO since it offers a different flavor of difficulty than all others in this list.
Really? Horatio? Horatio is difficult, but a song with shock arrows at 440 BPM may be bit harder. It's a 18 and has sudden stops and high speeds. And that ending steam is may harder than Horatio's 16th's. Just what I think :P

Pluto Relinquish Challenge should have been number 3, and 888 should move down to off the list. 888 is fucking easy if you have enough stamina to pass a low ITG 12, although the two trills make scoring a bit tough. PRO's crossovers are too fast to do legitimately, and doublestepping is no easy task ever.
***** "Simple" crossovers? More like disgusting asinine crossovers. Seriously, no other 18 requires you to twist your legs that fast. And in DDR Stamina generally isn't too much of an issue when it comes to higher tier songs.
They're simple but they're still disgusting. Any crossover at 400BPM is fucking horrible. An LDRDLDRDL is bad enough, but PRO actually requires you to contort your body.

I think it'd be interesting to do a Top 10 of favorite or hardest charts limited to a certain difficulty, such as favorite/hardest 13's or 15's. Or, say, favorite charts with a difficulty 13 or below.
never been able to do any song on expert mode (only on difficult) and ive only played euro mix two, so i dont know many songs, but i was expecting max 300 or something like that.

The rigidity of the jumps in NGO certainly is unique to other files (Paranoia Hades is a bit similar), but it's the easiest 18 to pass out of the rest; I just think it would be a nice experiment to see what other players think of songs that are harder to pass than other songs.

Some top ten ideas: Top ten hardest doubles charts. Top ten fun charts to freestyle (minimum of 7 assuming DDR X scale). Top ten mods. Top ten best charts that are not playable on DDR 2013. Top ten best courses. Top ten home version games. I can come up with some more later.
I believe difficulty ratings are suposed to be ratings of skills... probably because NGO forces you to use a special technique, while Pluto Relinquish doesn't... I mean you would rate a 9, a 10 if it had too many crossovers too, right?
Ok is there a trick to getting better at ddr? I have a home ddr mat and I can only go to level 11. Can u only get to higher levels on the arcade machine?

Well, I think Tohoku should still be in the top 5. I mean, it is true that PR has many crossovers and is fast as well. But Tohoku, 'back in the day', had an even bittier taste because of the first grimmicks which are the main reasons of many people's failure to attempt it in the encore extra stage. I'm not even talking about the stop and the sudden fast 680BPM which last for 2-3 seconds and then goes back to 340 lol But overall, I agree with that pole.
I'm assuming the top 10 in this video involves mainly scoring difficulty, because putting NGO in honorable mentions for instance is something I totally disagree with. I've passed NGO challenge but can't pass Pluto Relinquish Heavy, yet the rating difference for those files is one apart. So I can pass an 18, but can't pass the 17s. It would be interesting to see a top 10 hardest-to-pass DDR charts from you. The top 2 is already correct, but Pluto Relinquish is a lot harder to pass than Hades.
In my opinion, IX challenge would go at #3. 888 is still extremely hard, yes, but for the most part, it's straightforward. IX is just unforgiving all around. I don't know if AETHER will get a challenge chart, but I can sense a top 10-worthy one coming out of it.

Well, if you're talking about DDR X2 for PS2, it came out at the same time as HP3, although HP3 didn't have the challenge chart (unlike X2) (btw, the arcade version of X2 came out in July 2010, almost 9 months after its PS2 counterpart).
Max period tends to get overhyped as a difficult song because (for the period between the release of EXTREME JP CS and SuperNOVA AC) it was the hardest song, it being one of the oldest (albeit unconfirmed as one, although widely considered to be one on Expert (with Challenge being a 15)) 16 (besides PARANOiA survivor MAX, which could be as argued as easier than MAX period). It also doesn't help that it has probably the longest prolonged BPM, which makes it seem harder than it actually is. Again, like a said earlier, it's only speculation, and not an actual confirmed X-rating.
I knew Paranoia Revolution, Pluto Relinquish, Paranoia Hades, and Valkirie Dimension were some of the hardest songs but not Possession, and some other songs which I object are anything difficult. At least for official songs

DDR is quite a physically draining game, but a lot of the songs in this list are easier than the few boss songs in the original two ITG games..holy hell, mines (What you call shock arrows), hands (Yes, you hit your hands on the panels, 3 and 4 note jumps), and crazy speedups faster than most of the songs in DDR itself. But still, the last three songs, I have issues trying to full combo them in Stepmania with my fingers let alone my feet, the 16ths in PARANOiA REVOLUTION are just plain unfair.

Seriously, no other 18 requires you to twist your legs that fast. And in DDR Stamina generally isn't too much of an issue when it comes to higher tier songs.
They're simple but they're still disgusting. Any crossover at 400BPM is fucking horrible. An LDRDLDRDL is bad enough, but PRO actually requires you to contort your body.

Correction, if 888 went 888 BPM, it would spam quarter notes. It tops out at 444 BPM.

I think it'd be interesting to do a Top 10 of favorite or hardest charts limited to a certain difficulty, such as favorite/hardest 13's or 15's. Or, say, favorite charts with a difficulty 13 or below.
never been able to do any song on expert mode (only on difficult) and ive only played euro mix two, so i dont know many songs, but i was expecting max 300 or something like that.

The rigidity of the jumps in NGO certainly is unique to other files (Paranoia Hades is a bit similar), but it's the easiest 18 to pass out of the rest; I just think it would be a nice experiment to see what other players think of songs that are harder to pass than other songs.
Could you do the same ranking with DP? I mean, there may be slight differences with SP... :D Otherwise, I love your video, I'm looking forward to your next ranking :D (top 10 of most annoying stops ? top 10 of most random charts ? haha)

Depends if you're doing every single footswitch and crossover. If you doublestep the very hard ones, then it's easier to pass.

You should do a Top 10 DDR Songs with most stops / most difficult stops (like Chaos, Pluto, SP Trip Machine special, etc.)
Some top ten ideas:
Top ten hardest doubles charts.
Top ten fun charts to freestyle (minimum of 7 assuming DDR X scale).
Top ten mods.
Top ten best charts that are not playable on DDR 2013.
Top ten best courses.
Top ten home version games.
I can come up with some more later.

I believe difficulty ratings are suposed to be ratings of skills... probably because NGO forces you to use a special technique, while Pluto Relinquish doesn't... I mean you would rate a 9, a 10 if it had too many crossovers too, right?

Animegirl 27 you should get a metal pad or just play at arcade otherwise it's hard to improve on a foam mat.

Well, I think Tohoku should still be in the top 5.
I mean, it is true that PR has many crossovers and is fast as well. But Tohoku, 'back in the day', had an even bittier taste because of the first grimmicks which are the main reasons of many people's failure to attempt it in the encore extra stage.
I'm not even talking about the stop and the sudden fast 680BPM which last for 2-3 seconds and then goes back to 340 lol

I'm assuming the top 10 in this video involves mainly scoring difficulty, because putting NGO in honorable mentions for instance is something I totally disagree with. I've passed NGO challenge but can't pass Pluto Relinquish Heavy, yet the rating difference for those files is one apart. So I can pass an 18, but can't pass the 17s.
It would be interesting to see a top 10 hardest-to-pass DDR charts from you. The top 2 is already correct, but Pluto Relinquish is a lot harder to pass than Hades.

In my opinion, IX challenge would go at #3. 888 is still extremely hard, yes, but for the most part, it's straightforward. IX is just unforgiving all around. I don't know if AETHER will get a challenge chart, but I can sense a top 10-worthy one coming out of it.

Well, if you're talking about DDR X2 for PS2, it came out at the same time as HP3, although HP3 didn't have the challenge chart (unlike X2) (btw, the arcade version of X2 came out in July 2010, almost 9 months after its PS2 counterpart).

Max period tends to get overhyped as a difficult song because (for the period between the release of EXTREME JP CS and SuperNOVA AC) it was the hardest song, it being one of the oldest (albeit unconfirmed as one, although widely considered to be one on Expert (with Challenge being a 15)) 16 (besides PARANOiA survivor MAX, which could be as argued as easier than MAX period). It also doesn't help that it has probably the longest prolonged BPM, which makes it seem harder than it actually is. Again, like a said earlier, it's only speculation, and not an actual confirmed X-rating.

I knew Paranoia Revolution, Pluto Relinquish, Paranoia Hades, and Valkirie Dimension were some of the hardest songs but not Possession, and some other songs which I object are anything difficult. At least for official songs

I got good news for you Dr.D. Iamchris4life has PFCed New Decade on Oni and Valkyrie Dimension on Expert just yesterday. You should see his videos. He did a great job.
DDR is quite a physically draining game, but a lot of the songs in this list are easier than the few boss songs in the original two ITG games..holy hell, mines (What you call shock arrows), hands (Yes, you hit your hands on the panels, 3 and 4 note jumps), and crazy speedups faster than most of the songs in DDR itself. But still, the last three songs, I have issues trying to full combo them in Stepmania with my fingers let alone my feet, the 16ths in PARANOiA REVOLUTION are just plain unfair.
Pluto The First is first seen in DDR Hottest Party 1 for Wii, not DDR X2 for PS2.
