I try to film this small, rare and very cute mammal in a cemetery in Vienna.

- Vienna in Austria is renowned as the place to see and photograph the very rare European hamster. I have several days to find and get pictures and the first day was a little daunting. It is a huge cemetery and I had no idea where to start looking or what to look for.
However, it is a well known spot for wildlife photographers and by 1600 hours men with big lenses started to arrive in numbers. Hamsters are nocturnal or crepuscular creatures and not seen in the middle of the day.
The next day we spoke to a waiter who gave us a better spot to photograph the delightfully cute European hamster.

A wonderful heart warming video and after a week of listening to politicians lying their socks off a welcome relief - thanks Mike.
Thanks
Agreed 👍
"I'm not going to tell you where this cemetery is" with Beethoven's memorial in the background. 😆😆
Brilliant video Mike. I always look forward to 8.00am on a Saturday to watch your videos. You are the best nature UA-camr , with a shadow of doubt.
Thanks
Thanks Mike. Lovely story telling, wonderful pictures and dry humour soaked in subtlety for easy consumption.

Great video Mike.
I had no idea that hamster lived in such close proximity to humans.
You got some great images and footage. Amazing you could get that close with the 7-14mm. I really enjoyed that.
Glad you enjoyed it

One of your best! With a great outro!! Never knew these little critters existed - had a couple of syrian hamsters when I was a kid though!
Thanks.
Very entertaining Mike.
Thanks.
The ending was great hahaha :D
Very interesting video and a great use of remote photography. I found your use of Uber rides and Google translation apps worth remembering as well.
Thank you.
Wow. Didn't know there were hamsters indigenous to Austria.
Greatvideo Mike, bit different to your usual, but just as enjoyable
Glad you enjoyed it
Nice video as always Mike! I like your humor!😂
Glad you like them!
Amazing Mike.
Thanks.
Great stuff
Thank you.
Mike, thank you very much for this video. I almost forgot this species. I only knew it from a drawing in one of my biology school books, but have never seen a live one. In German it is called Feldhamster, which means field hamster.
You're very welcome!
Was there over Easter a great place for wildlife, loved the cemetery but didn’t see the hamsters. We did find the restaurants to have an English menu or a QR code to scan for a menu. Next time I go will know what to look for thank you 08:25
Thanks.
loved this video!
Thank you!!
Brilliant video, as always! I live some 100km from Vienna and on Wednesday I´m picking up my family from the airport...might be worth giving the graveyeard a look. If I can figure out the clue that is...:)))😂
Please do!
One of your best. Thank you.
Thank you too!
Absolutely adorable. Wonderful photos. Thank you!
Thanks
I just can hope now that others will respect our hamsters ( and leave them alone )
Thanks.
Fabulous Mike, a real treat to watch, thank you for making this 👍
Glad you enjoyed it
Very cute little critters. Thanks
They are!
What a fun, informative and entertaining video... especially the final scene! My wife wondered what I was laughing so hard about! Well done, Mike. :)
Glad to hear it!
Oh Mike, you lucky lucky thing. I've kept hamsters since I was a little girl, I still do. I've always wanted to see a European Hamster. Love the photo of the one with the apple. Thanks for sharing ❤
Maybe one day!
all I can say is wow , I had no idea these wonderful Hamsters existed, cuteness overload I think I’m in love , thanks for posting
Our pleasure!
That was a good one, Mike. I really enjoyed it. Thank you.
Glad you enjoyed it
Thanks for the video. Besides enjoying it and learning about a species I didn’t know existed, it shows the work you have to go to, to produce these videos for us. I really appreciate it Mike.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Very enjoyable viewing. thank you, Mike.
Thanks
was obsessed with Hamsters as a child
They are absolutely adorable 🥰. Nice to see the Hooded Crow too. I definitely agree with you recommending Uber taxis instead of hire cars, for all the reasons you mentioned.
Thank you! 🤗
Lot wildlife there. Nice to see
Thanks
Super cute Mike great video as always .My wife needs a robot grasscutter priceless 😂
Thanks 👍
Delightful, I bet you enjoyed this day.
I did!
Great video Mike thanks for sharing, lovey to see a hamster in the wild.
My pleasure!
What a great film Mike. That must have been great fun making it.
Yes it was
Another good video and story Mike.
Glad you enjoyed it
right when I am looking at a lens to present story of small world, inspired your beautifuk story
Amazing video Mike! We are going to visit Vienna soon and will definitely try to see the hamsters! What is the name of the cafe you visited?😊
I have no idea, but it is the only posh looking large cafe/restaurant in the central cemetery. Make sure you are in the same cemetery as Beethoven’s grave. There are many. Also hamsters hibanate.
Not sure how true it is but when I shared some pictures of Hooded Crows taken in Vienna I was told the Vienna population is now mainly hybridised with Carrion Crows, any birds with dark black pinion in the pale feathers are hybrids
I think they interbreed across their range. Scotland too.
Bonjour
Belle vidéo, merci pour le partage de l'astuce de traduction des menus!
Very Cute my children both had Guinea Pigs not Hamsters and we had two litters which we were very relieved to off load. Awesome video Mike
Thank you
😂 We will never know😂
Nice to see you in my home town 🙂Do you stay longer?
No. Only stayed for the hamster
As an Austrian living in Switzerland I always soak up videos of my home country. THX Mike, as always a great vlog. I hope you enjoyed staying in Vienna. Will you visit Switzerland once?
Only been once. Lake Geneva was good for photography
Wow! I never know what you are going to come up with! I once resprayed my 1968, F Reg, Vauxhall Viva, "Pampas Green" in my parent's garage, only to find my sister's Hamster dead the next morning. Cellulose fumes.
You would have been popular
That`s a very nice video
Thank you very much!
I had a magpie do the same as the hooded crow, it picked up a very hard piece of crust flew to the bird bath dunked it turned it till it was soft enough to eat. If a monkey done that they would say how intelligent mokey's are.
Crow species are smart
Oh yeah, can't imagine anyone knows where Beethoven is buried, lol. Thanks.
Hi Mike, how long are you in Vienna for?
I’ll be back there tomorrow night if you wanna meet up.
I live nearby that place and can give you some inside knowledge. Cheers Michael
Thank you for the offer. My YT films are made weeks or months in advance of when they go live. That was back in May.
@@MikeLaneFRPS Ok I see...
I kind of remember a friend of mine mentioning an English speaking gent at the hamsters back then.
If you come back here say hello :)
Cheers
Michael
How large is this animal compared to a mouse?
4-5 times larger than a Wood mouse
