I agree, calling an artist a genius puts unnecessary strain on them. But I think this wasnt even a song, it was a work of art.

I feel like you have to have the video and the song as one. I can't get the same reaction/feeling just with the song itself. "This Is America" truly is art in it's best form. Makes the viewer engage, question, precieve, and feel all kinds of different emotions simultaneously.

Love the reference back to Hiro & Gambino’s previous videos! I think Gambino is moving toward his peak, but as you said, he’s been making these artistic choices from the get-go. He’s always been a performance artist.

For all those of you wondering, the end clip is the final scene from Killing Them Softly. And with no hyperbole included, it's arguably the decade's most underrated movie. One of the best crime tragicomedies in years that has a lot to say about the grimy nature of anyone and anything being up for sale in a land that prioritizes profit over human life. SEE IT. Two viewings at minimum.

That was a good analysis, however, every video I've seen that has analyze this miss something in the beginning and I want to know what it may symbolize. The symbol in question is that face he makes on the time stamp of 0:40. I personally think it's the Uncle Ruckus face but I'd like to hear from others what that face might symbolize. I think people are paying way more attention to the video than the lyrics *WITH* the video.
I interpret the song and video as the black & hip hop community being more preoccupied with and glorifying looking fly, partying, toting guns, dealing & selling drugs--
("look what I'm whippin up"/"I'm so cold"/"I'm so dope"/"Look how I'm geekin out"/"I'm so fly"/"I'm so Gucci"/'I'm so pretty"/"Watch me move"/"Hunnid bands, hunnid bands, hunnid bands"/"Contraband, contraband, contraband")
--than they are with the issues that are plaguing the communities
(the various things going on in the background and throughout the video).

Bruh, If you're about to start doing music video reviews, I am 100% on board for this! -- In conversation with this video; I loved your perspective on it. When I first saw the video, my initial response was that the video was a representation (specifically) of the life black people in America have to live. Then they are slammed with blame and get in trouble because of the life they're expected to live. The collective mind set that we must look the other way when fellow Americans are being treated a specific way. That no matter what path is chosen, there's always criticism and blame in America. There's always an excuse.
But, I find myself agreeing with multiple view points and the more I watch the video, the more I see. I agree with how you saw the symbolism as well.
It's interesting because my wife saw it as a commentary on the military. (way out of left field, I know.) She said, there was a lot of stuff in the video that she just couldn't reference or explain. In her words, "I feel like I'm just sheltered from what's really going on in the world."
All of the view points have one thing in common, America, has a "tunnel vision;" we only seem to care and be captivated by what effects us directly. How can we not see more? How do we miss the details of everything happening around us?
Donald Glover may not be a Genius, or perhaps he is. But this project struck a chord with people. Only time will tell if it makes a difference or if it will just sit there and become an art peace on the wall. Another music video with money, guns and women. Violence and dancing to distract from the overall message.
Can we focus long enough to see it all and then be effected by it?
I'm sure I could go on about this for a while, but I think I've made my point. Now, I feel like Kanye, "What will you do about it?"

    • @jskrabac
      @jskrabac 6 років тому +4

I think a huge thing missing with this sort of message is context--the availability of information today and how rapidly it spreads. It has essentially shrunk the world. Before the internet, being an outstanding citizen, passing on good values to your kids, and contributing to your community was enough. Instead today we shoulder a more global burden. We see tragedy from all around the globe almost instantaneously. What CAN we do about it? I mean, we virtue signal and make our support known across social media with whatever daily hashtag is trending about it. But at the end of the day, we have to support ourselves first, and get up tomorrow at 7am to earn that pay check to survive. I don't think our vision has become more tunneled. If anything, it's the opposite. We see so much more and by human nature feel guilty for not doing more about it. We are forced to return to our lives accepting that we can't do anything about so much of it...and grow desensitized to it overtime. We also have to face how limited we are in our capacity to really make a difference.
That being said, what we can do about it is make ripples in the small world around us. Maybe that time you spent reading the news on your phone with your headphones in, you could've been making the bus driver or sales clerk smile. Or instead of leaving school to march in protest for stricter gun laws, you could've stood up for one of the kids being ruthlessly bullied at your school and actually changing their lives.

I think the chickens are a reference to the movie "City of God" which is a Brazilian movie that I saw Donald saying in an interview that was a huge influence to him when creating Atlanta. The movie starts with a chicken right in the middle of a gun fight between two gangs and this same chicken shows up later in the movie again.

The whole thing is about the role of a Black man in Black America
"Get your money Black man" chanted like 50 times
All of the lyrics of his character... pretty much just buzz words and phrases. Interchangeable. All he's doing with his character's lyrics is establishing his character... which is to say, "Product of his environment".
People mistake this to be about police brutality... it's not... his character was the one being brutal.
He's got an amalgamation of pop culture references and dances mixed in with the tragedies mixed in with the history, and the message is... it's ALL stuff to distract you from the plot while the community devalues YOUR life and tells you to "Get your money Black man". Doesn't matter how you do it. Doesn't matter if anyone's hurt. Doesn't matter who you are inside. Doesn't matter if you are hurting, if you want something different for yourself... YOU'RE A BLACK MAN!!!! MAKE MONEY!!!!
Then... when the dancing stops... and he tries to leave... make a new life for himself, what happens? The mob comes after him.
One could say that the black man is a monetary slave to his own community. He doesn't have any kind of agency. He's raised by the community for one sole purpose... Make money.

    My interpretation.
TAKE NOTE: Everything takes place in a factory setting, it’s all been manufactured.
0:05 - “There’s a seat to be filled” in the music industry (Guitar). The person who walks up to the chair is already an established artist just not as well known, “you only see one side of him.”
0:38 - Dancing for “white slave masters”
0:51 - The artist has been kidnapped (bag over head and hands bound) and has had his guitar taken (Plagiarised, stolen ideas), by Gambino who proceeds to “back stab” him (blow his brains out). The song twists your senses from good to bad, brainwashing.
0:54 - He gives the gun to one of his followers and they wrap it in a red cloth, this may be a symbol of the Republican Party, black people are killing themselves (throughout video) yet it is the republicans fault because guns are available. They are saying black people are killing each other, but they’re able too because of republican voters defending the second amendment, and those voters care more for their guns than black people (hence the cloth), but you’re blaming them when you’re killing each other. Confused? Keep watching.
0:59 - His followers (flying monkeys) hide/deny the evidence.
1:09 - You don’t wear school uniforms in America, yet theirs are very similar to Africans and I think it’s saying children of Africa are being taught to imitate the “immature gangster”. And that’s the pyramid, he does what his masters want and you copy him. (Same Dance)
1:24 - Now they’ve been brainwashed to ignore their surroundings, they will dance on their own, “to the beat of his drum”, but he keeps checking on them to make sure that they’re still dancing.
1:38 - It is the youth that’s being targeted, feeding them an ignorant mind-set that they carry up to adulthood. (Manchester bombing, everyone starts dancing)
1:42 - The most interesting part, these people are so happy because of what they are about to take part in. They are religious, but not to any god we worship. If they were Christians they would more likely be wearing purple, but what’s critical is that it’s blood red and so are the walls. It’s saying the cover up is already in place and their all in on it. Because they are all members of the order, including Gambino. Remember, still in a factory.
1:57 - Short blast with blood splatters overlapping the cover up (still obvious-9/11-911-state of emergency). False Flag attacks to push their agenda forward. Furthermore, everybody fell down, but he didn’t shoot that many bullets and it reminds me of the Sandy Hook kids and their doppelgangers at the Super Bowl, maybe they play dead so as the victim count looks worse, maybe nobody dies, just looks like it.
1:58 - Again hands it off to a follower who wraps it in a red cloth, making it look like the republicans are to blame and everyone who voted for them, majority of white people, trump has outcaste a whole side of the debate.
2:15 - White man “takes the fall” for the problems that are going on, Trump is the huge red flag that divided people into for or against, he’s purposely doing bad to make things worse and those who voted for him will be attacked. Plans made decades ago, it’s all manufactured. Trump, everything.
2:22 - Society is falling and your still being taught to follow and listen to them, this is what the song is about, it says barley anything, the lyrics are vague and repetitive (hypnotic technique)with some subtle messages, but when you watch their actions it tells you everything.
2:29 - The kids looking down filming is a metaphor, we look down at the things we film and watch on our phones yet do nothing about it. You never see these people who voice their opinions online, masked keyboard warriors, “they’ve taken the high ground”.
2:36 - The apocalypse and the horseman, notice there are fewer people however they’re all black. Aftermath of a race war? All whites are divided, those for immigration and those for a politically correct invasion gone into hiding.
2:46 - Here he comes out of his fantasy -the apocalypse- only to light a doobie and go into another, smoking weed to escape into a dream world, cannabis legalisation is another distraction. This music video is them telling on themselves, showing you everything, who they are etc, and this typically happens at the beginning of the end. A slow decline into fabricated madness, the music video is showing you the cycle of their actions. (Doing as commanded, Killing the competition, Becomes a STAR, Part of the cover up, a distraction…)
3:09 - The same guy (in African clothes) but without the bullet hole, it’s a twist, you can’t remember the face but “his music lives on”.
3:21 - This artist is “waiting her turn” (the female agenda, creating a society run more by emotions rather than reason or logic, makes you easier to emotionally manipulate).
3:32 - All these cars seem to be used by the youth earlier in the video however the only people left are childish, his music and the girl. They’ve removed the threat (one which they caused) and are ready for their next agenda, “who runs the world…”.
3:35 - This is maybe a reference to a laptop screen or a prison door, you’re looking into the system, you’re literally watching them throw it in your face and then you thank them for being so clever (UA-cam comments). They manipulate your thoughts and opinions by controlling what you watch; you only see their side of the story and then deny the reality that they are responsible for.
3:46 - He’s running into the light (the truth) however it doesn’t last long before it goes dark. (just as you think your winning)
    3:56 - Mask off.
3:58 - White people at the front chasing him, they know the truth.
4:01 - You chase them into the darkness, don’t do that. (Flipping the script)
    It’s all manufactured.
It’s not what it looks like.
    They are telling on themselves.
    “You motherfu*kers owe me”.

From the beginning of Lucifer’s creation, he was equipped and gifted with musical abilities.God’s purpose and plan was for Lucifer to use his music to praise and magnify the holy Name of the LORD. However, since Lucifer rebelled and apostatized from God, he has used his music to steal the hearts of mankind away from God and to turn their hearts after himself and his wayGod intended for foot-realm music be used to praise His Name in the dance. “Let them praise his name in the dance: let them sing praises unto him with the timbrel and harp” (Psalm 149:3).God purposed that heart-realm music be used to express melodious gratitude and thanksgiving to God the Father in the Name of the LORD Jesus Christ for everything that occurs in our lives as weacknowledge that all things are part of His Master Plan.Speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody inyour heart to the Lord; Giving thanks always for all things unto God and the Father in the nameof our Lord Jesus Christ; (Ephesians 5:19,20).
God designed head-realm music to cause His Name and His mercy to be known among His creation.Awake, psaltery and harp: I myself will awake early. I will praise thee, O LORD, among thepeople: and I will sing praise unto thee among the nations. For thy mercy is great above theheavens: and thy truth reacheth unto the clouds (Psalm 108:2-4).
Therefore, since music plays such an important part in our worship of the sounds that are made by the sloping edge of a cut jewel. Lucifer was like a jewel that had been chiseled out and cut so that his pipes were fashioned and formed inside. At first his jeweled pipes in his heart and head made melodious music of praise and thanksgiving unto God. This is why fallen Lucifer, now known as Satan, Devil, Serpent, and Dragon, can produce such fine music in our world today. Lucifer stole God’s fine gifts, talents, and workmanship and utilized them for his own exaltation in order to lead the hearts of mankind astray from God’s purpose and plan in music. Therefore, in spite of the lovely, pleasing, agreeable sounds of worldly music, let us remember that it is corrupted music. It does not awaken the emotions and feelings of the heart to praise and worship of God. Instead, the effects of it lead the heart astray from God and bring the soul into the bondage of Lucifer’s power and authority. It awakens and stirs the lusts of the flesh. Many homes have been broken because of relationships that have begun at dances. Music has awakening and drawing power, and Satan knows how to utilize this power to fill the capacity of man’s heart with worldly delight and satisfaction, which draws men away from God.Since music is such a powerful tool, both for God and for Lucifer, we need to understand more about God’s intended use for it.The knowledge of these truths should instill the fear of God within each of us. If we are wise, we will take heed to the example Lucifer has given us, and we will guard our ways lest we, too, fall and lose that which we now have in God.
Lucifer’s full state of corruption is unveiled in Revelation 12:9: “And the great dragon was cast out, that old serpent, called the Devil, and Satan, which deceiveth the whole world: he was cast out into the earth and his angels were cast out with him.” These names, which were given to Lucifer after his fall, eveal the multiple natures through which his sin manifested itself. Through the natures of Satan, Devil, erpent, and Dragon, Lucifer continues his warfare against God and those who choose God’s Truth

The video is cool, I see it as a theatrical performance piece, but If you just read the lyrics without listening to the music or watching the video the lyrics are really weak. If you listen to early NWA, Tupac, Ice Cube, Public Enemy these guys painted such a graphic image with their lyrics it's like comparing a novel to a nursery rhyme. Think about it, if NWA,Tupac, Ice Cube, or Public Enemy would have had a video that was this graphic to go with their hardcore lyrics back in the 90's the whole world would have been terrified. It's hard for me to be impressed by "This is America" because the lyrics are so soft, and although there are several messages in the video I think it's kinda funny how everybody is over analyzing it and imagining all of these obscure hidden messages. It reminds me of all the religious kooks back in the 70's that were playing Led Zeppelin albums backwards to hear the so called "hidden satanic messages". The topic of gun violence in America and in American schools has been covered by many rap artists back in the day - even Pearl Jam covered this with the song "Jeremy" back in 1991.

Like the video and understand the concept. That said, I have a brother killed by cop violence and am a bronze star CIB (look it up) Purple Heart veteran. I see bodies every time I sleep. You’re (Gambino) a millionaire via the “buisiness” whereas thousands of us are damaged Veterans who almost (and some who did) die so you you could make you’re music. I’m from Kenya. Colored people need help. Guarantee you can effect more lives action inf on that objective. I feel like 5 yrs from know I’ll see the same complaints. I’m a thousandaire. Just trying to support my family. You can change the world. Your music is great but shit or get off the pot. It’s not about you, but you are a tool to effect change. Let’s see what happens....
