The Loctite dispenser I used in the video has little squeeze tabs on the sides so you can just squeeze out a tiny drop onto the thing you want to glue. And since it is a gel it doesn’t run all over the place.
Nice idea, was thinking about the same 'campfire' and 'house on fire'. Also some old Märklin Delta decoders laying around. But the decoder needs to get a new high or low number to be operational and not interfere with the other Märklin decoders or DCC loc (number)s. Will be a kind of search party :-)
Super idea and video Larry!!! I may use a small ATTiny 85 Arduino instead of old decoder for flickering action ... don't have any old decoders ... but your campfire looks great!!
Or you can go to your dollar store and get a flickering tea light for a DOLLAR and add a 2 cent resistor and you have a campfire. You can get the tea lights in red or orange.
But I already had the old decoder just gathering dust. No need to leave is sitting another 10-20 years and I really doubt they would be as bright as my installation is.
Nice video. I could see using this in a Blacksmith hearth. I have my On30 steam engines equipped with a Soundtraxx Tsunami 2200 steam decoder. Headlight function works fine at Brake and in the Forward position. It turns off in reverse. There is no rear light at the moment. The resistor is back in the tender with the decoder. I would like to get a firebox flicker LED installed. I am considering putting it across the track pickup wires in the loco itself to cut down on wires between the loco and tender. The loco and the tender both have track pickup leads wired to the decoder. I do have the flickering fire LEDs with the resistor installed. Good idea or bad idea? Any chance you will do a firebox LED install video for us?
I don't understand why you need to use a decoder. Why not simply use a flickering LED ? Seems like overkill to use a decoder to create the flickering effect when you can get orange or yellow "candle flicker" LED's for a song on eBay: 100 x 5 mm, or 50 x 3 mm for under $10 (shipping included).

Neat Video! I just used a flame less candle LED from a Dollar Store, didn't want to waste a fully functional decoder. 😁

I decant some superglue on a piece of plastic then use a cocktail stick!

A simple flashing led will do all that 1 led 1 resister and power
Not the same effect as the random flicker programmed into most decoders. However the small battery powered candles may produce a nice effect.

I do have one planned as I have a loco that came with firebox flicker but it is so weak you can only see it if the room lights are turned off!
@@TheDCCGuy Which LEDs do you recommend for a firebox project? The smaller the better I would think, but bright enough to be seen.
When working with small items try holding them with Blue Tack
If you ran a few bits of the red plastic between the logs, would it carry the flames to the outside of the logs? Might look realistic.
You can also get “flickering” LEDs quite cheaply on eBay (and presumably AliExpress etc) for not much money. Just search “flickering led”.
I have several on order but for a fire you want a random flicker and I think the flickering LEDs are regular.
@@TheDCCGuy No. Flickering LEDs are random, flashing LEDs are regular. I've used a flickering LED for an oil lamp on a guards wagon [caboose].
