  • This video is a complete pronunciation guide on all the English pronunciation problems that Spanish speakers (mostly from mainland Spain) have and the pronunciation mistakes that Spanish speakers make in English. I also mention pronunciation mistakes and problems that Catalan speakers commonly have as well, simply because I used to live near Barcelona and I'm familiar with the Catalan language. :)
I've put a lot of time, energy, and effort into this video. So I really hope you enjoy it!

I teach using just one of many accents in the world. Please only learn it if you like it and if you are interested in learning it. I do not believe there is one “correct” accent or manner of pronunciation and I fully encourage EFL/ESL learners to expose themselves to as many varieties of English around the world to become accustomed to the beautiful variations of this world language. I focus mostly on teaching “Modern RP” (I may just say “RP” in my older videos, but to clarify, I do specifically mean “Modern RP”), however, you will hear a lovely little Yorkshire twang to my accent from time to time too. Please LOVE and BE PROUD of your accent. After all, it is part of your identity and makes you unique. 💚

      @Pronunciationwithemma  2 роки тому +12

Yes, I mention the "y" and "sh" (or sometimes "j") problem in the video. It's a VERY common one :) As for accents, I would say that you "suffer" just as much as people from Spain, sadly! :) haha

I'm in currently studying linguistics and I'm particularly interested in phonology research. I was wondering if there could be any seminal studies you might be familiarised with to investigate further into pronunciation problems of people from Spain learning English as an L2. I would be grateful if you could point me in the right direction.

Hi Emma, Spanish speakers are making mistakes when they speak English pronunciation and mostly they use their Spanish accent on English. They have to follow British English pronunciation

Wow. The part about "cat" and "cut" is just impossible to distinguish. I hear the same sound.
Is the "a" vowel of "cat" exactly the same one as in the word "gato" in Spanish? Or is it a different one?
The vowel in "cut" seems more a reserved vowel. Maybe more similar than the vowel in "rod"? Or maybe "oso" in Spanish?
I hope I'm not getting confused. Excellent video, Emma!

I suggest you don't compare vowels in Spanish to those in English. You just can't do that. Spanish has 5 vowels so equivalents can't always be found.

Thanks for your great video, @Pronunciation with Emma
Just to correct a minor mistake: /ð/ is actually present in Spanish phonetics -at least the version from Spain- in words like dedo /'deðo/ (finger); dado /'daðo/ (dice); todo /'toðo/ (all); nada /'naða/ (nothing); etc.

Very true but it's not quite like in English. A "th" in "dedo" and a "th" in "this" are quite different 😄

@Pronunciation with Emma - Thanks for replying, Emma.
I agree. Both are dental fricatives, instead of alveolar plosive like /d/.
Nonetheless, it seems to me that the English allophone is formed more to the front, i.e. the tongue sticks out further, and the fricative moment is more defined.
On the other hand, the Spanish sound is more subdued: the tip of the tongue aligns with the front teeth, and it is a softer fricative.
Anyway, phonetics is a bit like aesthetics... open to differing views, don't you think? Thanks.

what's the difference in pronunciation between cup and cop, please? Thanks!

      Cop - round like a Spanish O
Cup - the jaw drops, like shown in the video. The mouth isn't round

Hi, Emma. What about an "estuary" comprehension lesson? I find Ricky Gervais quite hilarious and I think he speaks estuary, is that right? But more often than not he is unintelligible. Thx

Ma'am thank you so much for all your efforts that you have done so far. Ma'am there is question that has been troubling me for so long. Could you please help me understand this. The sentence is given below:-
Strict actions will be taken against the suppliers who found non-compliant on this going forward.
Ma'am in this sentence I want to ask you that is this grammatically correct to say who found non-compliant or should we say who are found to be non-compliant or should we say who are found non-compliant.
I'm really confused ma'am. Please help me with this regard and tell me which grammar topic is used here.
Love you ma'am❤️❤️❤️ Thanks in advance.
