- Ever wonder what was involved in checking/adjusting the Desmo valves in a Ducati? This video compresses hours of labor to some key moments in the process.
Thanks to the Motor Cycle Center (teammcc.com) and the duc_doc, we got to see the work involved in tearing down a club member's Panigale 1199S for the valve service. See more pictures of motorcycle surgery by following the duc_doc on Instagram.

Hilarious comments folks, keep em coming! For the record, the group of idiots are the friends of the owner of the bike who is also in that group of idiots lol. Good times! Hats off the dealer and the tech for putting up with us, they are the real heroes! 😂
No wonder desmo services are so expensive - they're charging labor rates for five people 😂
Congrats to the mechanic for being able to concentrate with the racket going on. Interesting vid.
SportbikerNZ Haha, true. Check out his Instagram @duc_doc
Which one is the mechanic?
Yes, most obvious and noticeable....just concerntrate
hats off for the bloke doing all the work.
too much horse-play going on in that shop.
Filler_Erodo qZqq
Personally I think it's better that way.. everyone relaxed having fun..
valve cover gaskets and valve check on my '05 999 took 1.5 hours. THIS is nuts look at all that bodywork that has to come off!
I'll stick with the older mid 2000's bikes
Sweet video, looks like the front valves were not in spec. I also was surprised to see the evaporation canister still on the bike and the stock air filter. When I got my Termignoni exhaust it also came with a high flow filter, and the evaporation canister is the first thing I took off because that is the biggest thing that causes difficult starts on the Panigale.
Chris MHD Films first thing i did with my 1299 to lol i was thinken same thing you said lol
A ducati that actually gets ridded and isn't a garage queen. That's rare. Awesome no doubt but rare
Haha probably true in general, but not that rare in the DRILL Ducati club. We ride! Last year I put around 5000 miles on my Ducati’s (terrible weather all season), the year before that around 6000. And we only get to ride about 6 months a year since Chicagoland area weather is generally shit. 😊✌️
There is no way, as a technician myself, would I ever do any major work like that with all those people in the shop. Absolutely ridiculous. The complexity of this service and all the people horsing around. This shop is a joke.
LOL, get off your high horse. This was a tech demo for the club and the bike belonged to one of the club members there. The job wasn’t finished with everyone around, only the process was shown off. I’m also sure our technician is far better than you cause he wouldn’t post such an absurd comment 😆
You think checking the valves is a complex service? What are you the oil change “technician”? If you cant do this job while 1/2 asleep i wouldn’t say you’re a “technician” at all.
What a bunch of dumba**es.
Says the guy who cant do a valve service....
A chain turning a single idle gear, then gear driving the two cams is actually super clever on ducatis part.
It’s good you’re getting that old green coolant out. The new stuff is pink lol
Seems like everyone hit the pipe before starting. Some of the shit they were laughing at wasn't remotely funny.
LOL 😂
Excellent video , very informative, Unfortunately the bunch of Hyenas are annoying
I expected a little more information, it’s good for people to see what needs to be removed but I was hoping to get a look into how the valves actually operate and how you change shims for the valve lash adjustment. Looks like in the video we were only one or two steps away from learning that.
.....No other repair/maintenance work in that shop . So , let us do all together this Ducati.....???....😂😂
"Oh the spark plug is in there". No shit . Wouldn't want that guy anywhere around my bike. Bikes 101 is in the next building.
LOL, that was the owner 😂
whats so funny? let the guy work or at least ask something reasonable instead of being middle age Beavis and Butthead!
Im mechanic myself and sometimes folks like to hang around...its' pretty normal. But they respect what they see its like watching somebody making an art piece for them. Here its a freaking zoo.
James Wright-Roberts He was doing this for the group folks, it was a learning “event”.
They seem so happy,thats a good sign😁
Thank you. But this video will pretty great if u post more detail. 1ys ago. But still great. Thank guys.
8.21 I hear a collective of minions😂😂
thank you for sharing your knowledge
Great Job!!! We need more videos like this!!!
Ah no we don't .. Honestly after seeing this ..hearing some jerk say: "...lets take another spark plug and jam it in there" would you this dealership near a scooter much less a $45K Ducati ??
Damn didn’t know you had to take off the radiator just to get to the cylinder head I think I’ll just stick with my aprilia lol
Yeah cause Work like this happens so often LOL.
i can't imagine the V4
more fun
Vraiment de la très belle mécanique
Alhamdulillah, nice information :)
what's so funny? i watched the whole video and didn't laugh a single bit! damn annoying more than educational!
This video is not a comedy, wasn’t meant to be funny at all. It also didn’t promise to teach anyone how to do a valve job, but just be able to see one and generally what’s involved. Doing valves correctly requires more than watching any UA-cam video, so anyone who wants to learn to do that shouldn’t be going to UA-cam.
IL MOSTRO I just realized it’s been 4 months without any response from me! If this video wasn’t intended to be educational! Then why did you upload it on UA-cam? Btw I work at Ducati dealership and don’t need to watch videos to learn how to do shit on my bike.howver, what’s the purpose of this shit video anyway?
@@Iraqitammar just curious, does one need to remove the clutch Pak to do a valve clearance adjustment on these motors?
Mystral Magic no you don’t.
From where I sit and while viewing this when you guys checked the valves on that horizontal cylinder, the opener lobes need to be in the rest position pointing straight up for proper clearance measurement don't they? Not sure about this bike design but all later Testrastretta engines need to be done that way for precise measuring.
Jay Marucci This was being done by a certified trained Ducati technician, I have no idea about the details here.
That doesn't mean it was done correctly my man. Im telling you that those opening cam lobes for intake and exhaust need to be sticking straight up 90 degrees in their "rest" position to get the proper measurement and cylinder at TDC. Your 1199 is no different. There are plenty resources that document that. Look here www.ducatitoolrental.com/Testastretta.html#Testastretta_Instruction I'm not a "certified ducati tech" but pretty damn good mechanic. I'm doing the DESMO service now on my Diavel. Beautiful bike BTW. Good luck with it.
Jay Marucci Not my bike actually, but thanks! Ride safe!
@@ilmostro16 REALLY which douchebag was that...I owned a 999, BCM over bore kit, FBF prep engine.. valves check are simply as it gets,,..Honestly IF I owned this dealership, I'd be having a meltdown over these assholes wondering around a customers $50,000 motorcycle horsing around like 5 year olds...A shame because GOOD Ducati service techs are few and far between...IF your thinking of buying a Duc, do not buy it here..If you own one and it needs servicing DO NOT get it serviced here...
I agree with you on this, but as long as the cam lobe is not acting on the rocker he should be ok. I measure my 996 in the top position and a few degrees either side. Cheers.
How many billable hours of labor for this 15K/mile service?
Not sure but I think it ends up around $1200 for the labor on average.
Why didn't you remove the engine and put it on a stand to work on it?
Too many chefs!
good atmosphere!)
Thanks for th video!
And that's why I don't do my own Desmo service...
The worst part is removing just about everything attached to the bike to do a service then remember where it all goes back together.
Shit my old Triumph and XR1200 Harley is so much quicker to do a service I can see the S/Plugs, Man this is like living with a Super Model, 2 days to get ready to go out for 10 minutes show.
Remind me not to go to this shop.
Lol bet you have fun doing the desmo valve clearances with all them shims that need checking and changing
Chill video
Not a question of if, just when
Woooooowwwww Number Oneeeee
Damn a whole team of Motogp techs to get the service done 😂
How many Miles had it done?
and it never ran right again
why I perceive they were sexualsing the gauge feelers when inserted, I heard a lot of ha ha has....idk man that was fuckin funny to watch, maybe good sativa on site whatever very educational thanks
ma sono ubriachi ?
Why they look not pro mecha?
That's why I like my old 750 CB Honda!!
I really hope it was the owner and not one of the techs that snaped that screw tab off those $1,200 side fairings
what motorcycle is the minute 0.46?
If I am correct it is a MOTUS V4 USA made.
Seen one at the Barber Motorcycle museum in Birmingham Alabama in 2013 when I was over there.
So, not all Ducatis have timing belt s?
The racing engine models (Panigale) have timing chains
In 25 years I had 8 Hondas, 1 Yamaha, 1KTM, 2 Kawasakis and zero Ducatis... But thanks for the info
7:12 Έλληνας ! Να η κεφαλή ! :P
It's not a service!!!
That's complete disassembly and rebuild of the bike!!!
Is that cam wear normal?
You can’t see cam wear from the video, that’s just surface finish after thousands of miles. You’d have to take the cams to a CMM and measure their profile down to microns to see any wear lol. The cams will have far less wear in a Desmo engine than a standard one with valve springs because the cams aren’t under valve spring pressure all the time like standard engines. In a standard engine that uses strong valve springs, the cams have to apply enough pressure to push open the valves against the springs. There is none of that in a Ducati engine since there are no valve springs to force open. In fact, the cams aren’t under any pressure in a desmodromic valve system.
One bike with many people ....
"people".. many DOUCHEBAGS who are not funny standing around w/ their thumbs up their collective asses ..maybe that one guy should stick with working at a Dunkin Donuts, selling coffee, shitty 4 day old doughnuts and other vile crap that makes you sick !
Can you guys make another video but please don't invite the on lookers.
7:08 ακούγεται ο Έλληνας
ma a 15k devono smontare mezza moto ????
My 1199 have 60 000 km ,never touch desmo. Run like new
Talk talk talk
Come tutte le moto moderne sono fatte sempre meglio per la guida ma sempre peggio per la manutenzione, che invece dovrebbe essere comoda.
Poi loro vabbè con sto desmo complicano ancor di più la vita
Do the dealers actually do this work or do most just charge for it and only do plugs filters
e ridono..pare na scuola di cabaret,maa
These stupid comments by the bystanders are annoying.
Hammer = special italian tool? Do you even wrench bro?
Everyone was wasted 🍹🥂🍻🥃🍺
5:00 This is not chocolate😇😇
Kue bengkele nang nddi boscuu
Thats some hillbilly work right there...
SuperOMARKO LMAO
too many CLOWNS in the background
It shouldn't be this complicated to do a service. Shit design, intentional or not, on Ducatis part.
People like some of the guys in the shop area are why most bike shops limit who can have access to the shop area. Too many wise asses that know nothing chattering with the mechanics. They should get charged more for disturbing the mechanic.
I'd hate to guess the final cost for this service, not counting the smart arse's annoying the mechanic.
This is why I like hydraulic valves.
Why? To have even more complexity? And what mass production street bike has hydraulic valves anyway?
You like hydraulic valves? Do you also like valve springs weakening , causing valve float at high end speeds?
Steve Griffith High end speeds on my bike I 3k rpms, no worries.
Dam phone, I meant 3 k rpms
IL MOSTRO Most cruisers have them, no HP bikes do.
what's so funny? Let work in pace the mechanics
So basically after 15k miles you have to take the bike apart piece by piece to do *ordinary* maintenance... Nice... And cheapas well, I guess! What a bargain!
Adjusting valves is not "ordinary maintenance.
Ahhh a Ducati in its natural habbitat
LOL.... I’ve owned 3 Ducati’s and have never had any single service required problem. Valve adjustment is 18,000 miles so I didn’t make it yet on any of them (Monster was traded in at 10K).
Too many "cooks" .... too many cooks spoil the broth
He's excused then.
LMFAO... How many people does it take to fix a DUCATI??
According to this about 10
Pretty sure there’s one mechanic here, and 9 noisy spectators 😆
not an easy maintenence bike. so much plastic
fucckin hate ducaties bikes its so hard to work on and sounds like shit
💸
watch this on mute...much better
better 2 stroke 1 cylinder very easy to work 😂
Or just no engine at all, pedal bike is the easiest LOL.
I hate working when there is people around me like that !!!!! So annoying
What a bunch of fools
Wtf is going on in this video? 20 different guys yucking it up and touching everything. What a weird video
What, you never saw a Ducati gang bang?
To much talk...just talk less do more....
What a noisy bunch.
